After Allie is brutally assaulted by her coworker, she doesn't know what to do. After all, her assailant was also a police officer, and it could be his word against hers. Who would believe her? No one, she thinks at first. She turns to the person she feels closest to, Nia. As Nia helps Allie get through these difficult hours and days, their feelings toward each other begin to go much deeper than friendship.
The inciting incident in this book, a violent sexual assault, is handled with such tact and delicacy by the author that it was not only bearable for me to read, but I also wanted to know what was coming next. I never expected this book to be such a page-turner while, at the same time, filled with tender and heart-warming dialog. The term "love conquers all" is certainly a cliche, but in this novel, we see how love really does win over evil.
Parts of this novel might have been whittled down a bit, but I still give it a strong five stars for bringing me out of my comfort zone, but at the same time, keeping my faith in humanity.
This was a great debut novel, and I am looking forward to more from this author.
