I think I’m falling for my bodyguard co-worker. Now I need protection… from myself.

As a former SEAL intelligence officer, I’m supposed to be smart. Unfortunately, those smarts don't apply to love. I did a nice thing and took my heartbroken fellow bodyguard out for a Valentine’s dinner. Just us bros. But my plan worked a little too well, and a night that ended with a scorching kiss has turned into the most awkward morning at the office ever. Now we’re working together as bodyguards on a remote mountain movie shoot. And we’re roommates.

I’ve never been attracted to a guy before, but something about Avery calls to every protective instinct I have. We’re not dating, but every night alone together, I fall a little deeper. It's also Avery’s first time with a guy too, and while we’re both enjoying all sorts of new things together, I worry my heart will be broken when we return to civilization.

No matter how badly this may end, I can’t seem to stop wanting Avery. All of him. I want to see who he'll become if he ever manages to get out of his own way. I want to be his biggest cheerleader, best friend, and the guy he comes home to. But going from secret hookup to forever after is a big ask. Are we both brave enough to take the leap?

This is my second favorite book in the A-List Security series. Ambrose and Harley (book 3) remain number one.

But I loved Malik and tolerated Avery who honestly drove me batshit until the end.

Malik is a dream: open and accepting, loves his mama (damn straight), and super chill when he discovers his bi side.

Avery, on the other hand, is not chill or open ... or close to his mother (not that I blame him).

Avery wants to date beautiful women so his dad and older brother, bro dudes through and through, give him a wink and a slap on the back. But Avery is most definitely not straight nor masculine. He loves soft, silky things, thrives when he gives up control, and would shimmer all day long if he just stopped with the internalized homophobia.

Malik is incredibly patient with Avery, perhaps more than Avery deserves. But they fit together like puzzle pieces, so I was rooting for them as a couple.

The MCs and secondary characters are fully fleshed out, but I expect nothing less from Annabeth Albert.

Sexy, complex, with a bit of angst (relationship and otherwise), Rocky Start is an awesome addition to this series.

ANNABETH WRITES WONDERFUL MILITARY MEN AND HERE’S NO EXCEPTION

I love the way Annabeth writes military men and here it’s a double bisexual/gay awakening coupled with a dawning realisation that liking pretty things isn’t a sign of weakness.

An act of kindness from one A List staff member to another when they both find themselves dumped just before Valentine’s Day turns into a truly compelling exploration of what makes someone tick.

There’s trigger warnings for mild internalised homophobic ideas about masculinity and a few examples of toxic thinking, but otherwise, this has only a small amount of relationship angsting.

I fell in love with the exceptionally kind and thoughtful Malik straight away, Avery was sweet as candy but took a bit more warming up to.

Not because he’s not worthy of affection, but more because he blew hot and cold and had a lot of work to do on his own personal hang-ups.

But once he realised his feelings for Malik were genuine, well then he was an utter delight and seeing him opening up like a flower in bloom was gorgeous.

There’s very mild kink, some spanking, dirty talk and a love of lace underwear which helps Avery come to terms with himself that I adored seeing play out.

Best thing though, the guest appearance of two of my favourite characters from Annabeth’s Out of Uniform series. Who, I leave it for you to discover 😁

I believe this is the last book in this series for now and I’ve loved each one of them for many different reasons.

I think Ambrose and Harley’s remains my favourite one though.

It's no secret that Annabeth Albert knows how to write (ex-)military men. Her Out of Uniform series is still one of my favorites for that trope and she didn't disappoint with her newest release either.

Avery and Malik drew me in right from the start. There was no slow beginning, no reluctant reading of the first few chapters, no needing time to get invested in the story. No, before I even realized it I was halfway through the book and eagerly turning the next page.

I liked the progression of their relationship from friendship, to casual, to boyfriends. It had ups and downs, struggles, jealousy, denial, freak outs, tenderness, humor, fun discoveries, shopping trips, but most of all it had communication. This might be the best couple at talking about their issues, feelings and thoughts. It was so refreshing to read a story where there were no secrets between the MCs, no misunderstandings. They both communicated to the other what they were feeling, were honest and weren't afraid to be vulnerable and open up.

And I think it's because of that Avery was able to set free things he had suppressed in the past. He went on a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance with the unwavering support and encouragement of Malik. It was heartwarming to see him finally embracing his true self and accepting who he was.

The characters take their time to progress their relationship from one stage to the next, they leave time for their feelings to grow and they pace themselves. I loved that the story takes place over several months.

And you know what else I loved? No unnecessary split at 80%. This book didn't need tricks to produce a plot, the story moved along effortlessly and the characters always had something to say.

One more thing before I end this review, there's a very special surprise appearance in the last chapter. My favorite couple from this author made a cameo and, when I realized it was them, I may have gone back and reread their scene one or three times. Awesone ending to an awesome story!

Equal parts cringey and cute. I’ve previously loved this authors work but sadly this series hasn’t had quite the same magic for me. I was really hoping this would be a winner though because the characters sounded right up my alley - both war vets, one with PTSD, the other an amputee with a prosthetic arm. Unfortunately the arm wasn’t written as well as I’d hoped for. It was never mentioned if this was a below or above elbow amputation, there was no stump care and just generally every time it was mentioned the writing felt awkward.

Malik’s character was great but Avery didn’t feel believable to me as an ex-SEAL. Maybe that was the point, I guess the storyline is that it wasn’t really his calling in life and he had better talents elsewhere but I find it hard to believe he could have gotten to where he did with the skill set he seemed to possess. There was some lovely sexual discovery scenes here but also possibly the worst gay awakening/gay for you first kiss scene I’ve ever read I almost dnf’d at 12% but my faith in this author kept me going. It did get better and the romance was rather beautiful but overall the cringe moments were much too frequent and the writing just felt far weaker than what I’ve previously associated with this author.

Avery and Malik don’t quite understand what’s happening between them. They started out as friends just experimenting, but it seems like it’s turning into so much more. When circumstances have them sharing a hotel room while on a job at remote location things get awkward and then things get hot! I loved how these two guys explored new things with each other. Both of them always dated women and Avery, especially, believed himself to be straight. Any other desires he’d ever had he kept to himself. His father was a former pro-football player and Avery was always expected to do the masculine thing...guy things. When he and Malik begin exploring each other he slowly began to let his more feminine side come out. Until Avery, Malik had never wanted to explore anything else but after a little experimenting he really wanted and welcomed more... but only with Malik. Malik enjoyed helping Avery explore his desires and learn about what he likes...like silky, lacey stuff. There were tense moments for Avery throughout the story. He had a difficult time coming to terms with his newly recognized desires. Malik helps to show him that none of his feelings are wrong, no matter what they may be. A pivotal moment finally makes Avery realize that he needs to be true to himself and not let anyone tell him how he should feel or who he should or shouldn't love. The final chapter in the book goes forward a year and lets us see what these two are doing after the main story ends. I hope there is going to be book 5 in this series.

4.5 stars rounded to 5 for Goodreads

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Rocky Start
is the last stand alone in the A-List Security series by Annabeth Albert.

Malik and Avery are co-workers at A-List Security. Malik's engagement has recently ended, when Avery gets dumped on Valentines day he offers to have dinner with him as friends so they don't spend the night alone. After a few drinks, Avery loosens up enough to ask Malik to experiment with him. Neither have been with a man before but both fully embrace the encounter. That is, until afterwards and the guilt and shame set in for Avery. Malik doesn't regret anything and leaves the offer open for Avery to explore more. When they get put on assignment together in Colorado, sharing a room, they take advantage of their time alone. It doesn't take Malik long to know what he wants but Avery has a hard time wrapping his head around all the changes he's going through. Will Avery be able to let himself hold on to what really makes him happy, or let his fears keep control.

"I don't know what I'm doing here. You twist me all up, Malik."

Like the book's title, Malik and Avery's relationship has a bit of a rocky start and so did my relationship with Avery's character. His hot and cold was not fun to read. But it didn't take him long , once they were on assignment and sharing a room, for him to steal my heart. Avery has a suitcase full of insecurities, some of them having to do with being an amputee, some with his height, and simply not being good enough. Malik suffers from PTSD nightmares but he doesn't let them hold him back. He's focused and confident. I loved the way he easily accepted that he might be pan and that people's sexuality can always evolve no matter the age. I loved his caretaker personality and just everything about him.

I wasn't sure what that word was, but it had to be something good, something I wanted to be for Malik. Pretty. Beautiful. His baby. I wanted it all, every endearment.

Damn, together they were pretty great, when Avery wasn't letting his fears completely overtake him. I loved the Dom/Sub relationship they naturally slipped into. Malik was a caretaker Dom who got pleasure from Avery enjoying himself. Avery blossomed under Malik's direction and praise. I loved how Malik helped Avery see how beautiful he was inside and out and that there was nothing wrong with his feminine side or wanting to be dominated and wear lingerie. I loved that Malik gave Avery what he needed in the bedroom but in a safe way by doing research and making sure they discussed and had a safe word just in case. I loved the heat, the tenderness, and the banter whenever Avery's bratty side came out. As you can tell, I loved everything about their physical and emotional intimacy.

"Mine. You're mine."
And I was his, fully owned by is every movement, each moan and touch. I found his mouth for another kiss, deep and true.

I think Rocky Start is my favorite and ends the A-List series on a high note. An MM bodyguard romance with first times, sexual explorations, being true to one's self, family, ghost towns, great food, documentaries, PTSD, compatibility, praise kink, spanking, lingerie, presents and a very satisfying ending for Avery and Malik.

In the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, our two SEALS are on assignment for A-List Security.
Military, prosthesis, both with M/M first times, sexy undies, and it's a Stand Alone story.

We see our men on the job, add two breakups, and our two disappointed guys go to dinner with each other for Valentines Day. They learn more about each other, have great conversation, and then later, after some fierce gaming, the two men challenged each other for an experimental kiss!
* Avery, 25, tall, blonde, stubble, lean,

a prosthetic arm and tattoos, had his girl, Venus break up with him. He seems insecure and unsure in his personal dealings.
* Malik, 31, Muslim descent, short beard,

taller, dark and handsome, an LT. in Intelligence, had his girl Lacey breakup with him awhile ago. He is strong, solid and open to exploring.

Their next assignment will be together again, on a Colorado mountain movie set filming. It's fun, different and fascinating. Our guys end up learning new things, as Malik helps with the horses, and Avery helps with the wardrobe costumes, and finds something special.

Behind the scenes our two lovers are spreading their wings into light kink. There's spanking, lace and satin undies, and a sexiness at a whole new level that neither has ever felt. It's first times for both men in M/M sexy times.

This story shows us how our guys step into new territory, how someone finds a new niche he belongs in, and the other steps up from his current job, to one above what he's been doing.
We get a tragedy and rescue, and more.

This is well written by the talented Annabeth Albert, who knows her characters, even flawed guys, and shows us all of the feelings along with deep thoughts, and delivers a wonderful tale.
ENJOY !

Holy spanking overlords! I loved this book! It was sweet, kinky, swoony, funny. Both MCs are SEAL vets. One MC has an arm prosthesis, the other PTSD. Both are figuring who they truly are and they just randomly start doing that with a very hot making out session. What follows is a journey of self-doubt, self-discovery, fear of what other think, safe spaces, very steamy nights, taking care and taking charge, kink discovery with sexy lingerie, and just two guys just falling and falling and falling and making a two bed situation into the one bed we all love.

I really loved how vulnerable they were, in particular Avery. He has hidden so much about himself due to his upbringing that he doesn't even know who he is and what he truly likes. And when faced with things he might enjoy, say pretty things or being with a man, he completely freaks out and can't keep him from thinking about what other people might think about him.

After both confessed they weren't against trying things with a man, Avery and Malik start opening up to what they like and they find out there's a lot to discover. Their relationship is a bit kinky and they explore what's in Avery's fantasies. Malik loves giving Avery everything he wants and treating him well. And Avery loves the care and attention Malik showers him with. They are truly perfect together.

Another detail I loved was how, when they both wanted to go further into the sexual exploration, they sat together, Google it, took notes and made plans. It was so cute! No rushing. A to-do list!

While this was probably the angstiest of them all, it was still pretty low angst and low drama. My heart did go through emotional journeys. A good one!!

I liked it. While it isn't my favorite of the series (book three still holds that prize), it is still a good book. It is interesting to see both Avery and Malik discover themselves while falling for each other. And the kinds of discoveries they made too

Two ex-seals find themselves a little curious to explore. It’s always been women, but the first kiss leads down a path they never expected.

They are great guys, with a lovely connection and some great banter. There’s a lot to explore, and as they find themselves exploring and opening up, that exploration changes their worlds.

The theme of this book is very much, self-acceptance. Accepting their pasts, especially their past (perceived) mistakes. Accepting what makes them happy, and that they deserve to live their lives their own way.

They fit so beautifully together, and they bring out the best in each other. And through their mutual acceptance, they both shine and find a peace they never knew before.

There are beautiful discussions on disabilities, mental health, and some light kink. And I love the exploration of lace.

This author has an incredible talent for creating the sexiest military/bodyguard MC’s that never fail to heat you up...🔥

Malik is instantly loveable – he’s sweet, kind and infinitely patient.

Avery has to go through a nice character arc for you to love him just as much but that is what this story is about – learning who you are so that you can be the best version of yourself.

I love how relevant Avery’s concerns and misconceptions were and how Malik was ever so ready to help him figure things out – it made it all seem all the more real…💙💙

Ummm… ok 🤔
2.5 rounded to 3

I love this author, but… I’m a little disappointed.

I know she can write military characters brilliantly so I guess I expected more than what I got, which was military character lite… ish?? It also felt to me like Annabeth was trying to touch on too many things in one story and as a result the core message(s) gets diluted and/or convoluted. The best authors recognize that less is usually more.

This story would have worked a lot better for me if they had been a different version of former military. To be fair this feeling may be a symptom of my being too close to the subject matter. My husband is former military, a veteran, and current LEO. I know and spend/have spent a LOT of time around former military and know the operator type well. While I quite liked both characters and found them to be very well suited I simply did not get “operator”, or even former operator from either of them unfortunately. Those men have a very specific mentality. They are utterly single minded in their execution of a mission and are mind-over-matter almost to a fault. It’s a major part of what makes family and civilian life such a difficult thing for them. Even after retirement/discharge this remains a core part of their being and makeup and I just didn’t see that in either Avery or Malik.

The security job scenario they found themselves also just felt odd to me. Again, I probably know too much about how this all actually might/should work, so it didn’t feel believable. Logistically and tactically it made no sense.

The way Avery’s arm injury//adaptation was handled was also strange. By the end of the story I STILL didn’t know if this was an above- or below-elbow amputation. We didn’t get much detail at all about how he’s adapted to using a prosthesis, what the prosthesis was like, how he took care of it and his stump. Phantom pain was barely touched on and the body image was only shallowly explored imo. Again - I know too much, not only from my adjacency to vets with these kinds of injuries and the way they handle them in every day life, but also because I’m an RN and know what this kind of thing involves. Even Malik’s sleep issues were only kinda-sorta addressed.

The sex was fire and the tenderness and acceptance between them as a couple was really beautiful. Avery’s manties/prettiness kink was great and Malik was able to give him exactly what he needed in the bedroom in many ways which was fabulous… even if there was an awful quick capitulation on Avery’s part to fully engaging in sexual activities with a dude.

Ok it’s midnight and I’m rambling about a 3star read which I said I wouldn’t do this year.
TLDR: Somehow there was simultaneously too much going on, and yet also, not enough detail where it was important to have it. Chemistry and sexy times were off the charts with some fun kinks.
Overall a nice story best enjoyed OFF the subject matter high horse lol. Suspension of disbelief required.

Beautiful Romance 🥰

I've read all of the A-List series and loved them. These books are so beautifully written, with great plots and characters, lots of fun, with just a twinge of angst. Annabeth Albert hits passion and emotion right on the head in this latest addition,it's a hot and steamy romance, with both loveable and addictive characters. I adored Malik's savoir faire, and the surety of his feelings for Avery, he's just what the poor guy needs. Avery is truly a mess, he finds the pull he feels towards Malik scary and confusing. His story is such a rollercoaster journey, I could feel the intensity of his emotions throughout. I loved Malik's protectiveness towards him, and his desire to keep Avery safe. Malik is such a sweet guy, and sets about showing Avery what life would be like if he both accepts his true self and Malik's love. The characters are so well drawn, and the development of the romance and the problems they have to face kept me fully involved til the very end. Avery's character development and his eventual acceptance of who he is was a delight to read. I also liked all the additional characters, and loved, once again, meeting up with characters from previous books.

A-List Security is another one of Annabeth Albert's Military Men Series, which I absolutely LOVE, only these men are out of the service now and are adjusting to their new norm and for some that means discovering somethings about themselves that they may not have realized before which is the case for both Malik and Avery. Malik and Avery are both former SEALs and now they work for A-List Security as bodyguards for celebrity clients, these two are so different yet so much alike it's easy to see why they get along so well.

I loved the sexual awakening between both men and what I loved even more was Avery's love for all things lace. I haven't read many books with that kind of kink but I really enjoy it and would love to see more of it.

The author has a content/trigger discussion for mild internalized homophobia, this is something that one of the men has to work through as he realizes he is indeed happy about spending time with a man...it's more along the lines of toxic thinking then homophobia in my eyes, but you may see it differently.

This was another great addition to the series which have all be light on angst and high one heat, this one even gives us a surprise visit from a couple from the OUT OF UNIFORM SERIES and it was great revisiting old friends again.

I would recommend this book to those that enjoy STEAMY MM Romances, Friends to Lovers Romances, Workplace Romances, Roommate Romances, Forced Proximity Romances, or Military Romances.

Happy Reading!!!

I absolutely loved this book… is anyone surprised? This whole series has been lovely. I had such a good time with these characters!!
I adored watching Avery find freedom in kink and accepting that there’s no age limit to discovering yourself. Malik and Avery make the perfect pair, balancing each other.
I love hearing from the guys, Cash, Duncan and Harvey, and seeing what they’re up to after their books. There’s also a brief cameo from Wes and Dustin from WHEELS UP!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.75 stars

This is the fourth book in Albert’s A-List Security series, and the books stand on their own pretty well. This book even more so, in my opinion, as we saw barely more than a passing mention of these two characters in past books. But it encompasses the themes we’ve seen before: former military men working for A-List Security, and filled with revelations and exploration as the MCs find out what makes them tick.

As with the rest of the series, this book is told in alternating first-person POV, and I think it worked especially well here. What really struck me is the chemistry between the MCs. Right from the start, it sizzled and sparked, practically leaping off the page. Their first sexual encounter could have been strange because of the speed with which they jumped in, and yet it felt completely natural for these two. Overall, this one is my favorite book out of the series.

Fourth in series (A-List Security), but can be read as a standalone. POC representation. Dual POV. Malik and Avery work well together as security and bodyguards, and when they hang out on Valentine’s Day and share a steamy kiss it begins a relationship that neither one of them expected or is prepared for. Both Avery and Malik are likable characters that have overcome plenty of obstacles when their friendship grows into more. I really appreciated that Malik was so accepting of his attraction to Avery, so supportive and thoughtful towards Avery and genuinely caring towards him. Avery’s fears and self discovery are certainly relatable and he has his own inner bravery when learning new things about himself and taking care of Malik’s needs as well. Really a romantic story with Avery and Malik building something together, learning each other's desires and growing as a couple that fit together so well. A relationship that strengthens your partner and allows you to bloom is just all the swoon and this story delivers with Avery and Malik. The lingerie and dirty talk brings the steam while the constant support and caring brings the romance, just overall worked for me in every way. This author and this series does not disappoint, HEA for sure.

My favorite of the series!! I just absolutely adored Avery and Malik. It just is a wonderful double bi/gay-awakening story with more realizations that just make the characters so whole, real, and interesting. Avery might be hard to like in the beginning, but he ended up being my favorite. He has a lot of internalized issues, and runs very hot and cold in the beginning, but his growth is just phenomenal to see. And Malik was the perfect partner for him as he was steadfast and so encouraging. Just from start to finish this book made me smile and was the perfect end to an amazing series.

Avery and Malik are coworkers, former SEALs and identify as straight until one kiss has them rethinking everything. Of course there are ups and downs along the way and my heart went out to Avery as he struggled with becoming the person he always wanted to be. Fortunately he has Malik who is compassion personified and is always uplifting Avery in every way and accepts everything about him unconditionally.

There is a touch of angst as these two wonderful characters find their way to a well deserved HEA. There’s also plenty of steam, lots of sweet, silky lace and a little bit of kink as they explore the boundaries of their newfound sexuality.

The author has portrayed the struggles Avery and Malik have due to their military service in a compassionate and sensitive manner. Combined with a very interesting and engaging plot and a terrific cast of characters I read this in one sitting and was left with a full and happy heart at the end.

Received from the author’s PR person, thanks!

*SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!*

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. There was a lot that I liked, but some things that didn’t quite feel right to me.

So, it’s basically a dual pan/gay awakening story and I did like that and I liked the characters, Avery and Malik. What I didn’t like was that part of the gay awakening seemed to involve the realization that that character likes pretty things, which seems to equate to him being gay. And I think I can see what the author was trying to do, but I don’t think it quite worked. There also didn’t seem to be much else that lead that particular character to realizing he’s gay (as opposed to bi or pan); no re-examining why relationships with women didn’t work out, no realizing he had crushes on guys before. I’m not saying there is a particular right or wrong way to realize your orientation, but this felt off. I guess as a reader I just wasn’t given enough internal thoughts to understand how the character got there.

Another thing I didn’t like was that one of the side characters seemed to be on a really restrictive diet, but oh well, she’s an actress and that’s just how things are! It kind of felt like it was saying that if you want to be a successful actress you have to starve yourself. And her food/diet thing really had no bearing on the overall story. It could have been taken out and it wouldn’t have made a difference.

Those were my two big things that kept my rating at 3 stars. If those had been done slightly differently, this would have been a strong 4 stars for me. I really liked the MCs, I thought they were great together, I liked the forced proximity (hello one of my fav tropes!), I liked that the third act conflict was external, as I’m becoming increasingly bored (sort of?) of getting to the third act conflict and it’s a break up, just so that they can turn around and get back together again 10 pages later.

Anyway, I did like this book, just those two things really didn’t sit quite right with me.
