This last year has been a total disaster, but my failed six-month marriage takes the cake. While my ex is out having the time of his life, my coping mechanisms consist of an unhealthy obsession with true-crime podcasts and trying to revive my floundering social media account.
So, when I get an offer from one of social media’s darlings—Nikki Aker—to make gingerbread centerpieces for her Christmas wedding, I can’t refuse. Not only because the job pays well (my maxed-out credit card will attest to how much I need this money), but it’s a last-ditch effort to increase my following before I’m forced to get “a real job.”
There’s only one small problem I didn’t account for: Nikki’s a self-proclaimed matchmaker, and apparently, I’m her next target. My only hope to escape unscathed is to conspire with Nikki’s grumpy—albeit gorgeous—brother, Landon, who seems equally determined to get through this wedding with his single status fully intact.
All we need to do is convince Nikki we're developing feelings for each other. What can possibly go wrong?

It’s a divorcee romance where both characters had previous failed marriages.
The characters were good. I really liked Landon and Quinn was good most of the time. She struggled a lot with insecurity but that allowed Landon’s care for her to shine even more.
The writing was so witty at the beginning and it hooked me! I loved the initial interactions between Landon and Quinn.
The Christmas vibes were low. The wedding was set just before Christmas and Quinn was working on gingerbread houses but that’s all the Christmas cheer there was for me.
It didn’t stand out five star level but I really enjoyed it and would recommend!
No language and only kissing. No innuendoes.
Tropes & Triggers: forced proximity, fake flirting, wedding setting, divorce
This is a fantastic book about knowing one’s worth, creating healthy boundaries, dealing with difficult parents and an ex, and learning to live with anxiety.
It’s set at Christmas, but it’s not overly Christmas-y. Both main characters are divorcees and the tropes are grumpy-sunshine and forced proximity. This is the author’s contemporary debut (she regularly writes historical fiction) and she’s hit this one out of the park!
There’s quite a bit of Quinn Cook in me…well, except for her kitchen skills. Therefore, it was so good reading about someone with anxiety simply to confirm for myself that I’m not weird. Well, ok, that’s still TBD. LOL! Landon was so wonderful in dealing with her and providing a safe place for her to grow. I instantly liked these two characters.
This unexpected 5-star read has me adding this new-to-me author to my autoread list.
4.5⭐When two divorcees with a lot in common are thrown together for the Christmas holiday. This Book covers all the emotional bases with a great balance of depth, character discovery, humor, and all that beautiful growth. I loved they could both see their own faults and insecurities as well as each other, and that they could talk about everything.
I enjoyed this holiday storyline it is well throughout and worth reading. The characters are engaging and entertaining throughout the pages. A Lovely book about two people whose lives were bent, but who refused to let themselves be broken. I found this story to be a nice-paced contemporary Christmas story with just enough angst and conflict to keep me interested until the end.
Funny Meet-Cute Forced Proximity Fake dating Witty dialogue Christmas town setting Gingerbread Houses Swoony Kisses I loved the family dynamics. the built-up of their romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Oh wow—I love! For me, this story ties for first place (alongside Faking Christmas & Cotswolds Holiday) in the Christmas Escape series.
The meet cute is absolutely priceless—as a fellow murder mystery/crime buff I’m sympathetic with Quinn, and a frying pan is my weapon of choice every time. 😂
Landon and Quinn have great chemistry, despite their efforts to thwart Nikki’s matchmaking, as they fumble through fake dating.
Despite Landon’s broodiness, he really is a sweetheart and a gentleman. And Quinn! Don’t get me started on this girl who has clearly been through the wringer! (They both have, really.)
There was just so much to love about the story: •the Jekyll and Hyde references 😂 •Landon and Nikki’s sibling dynamic •New England Christmas vibes •gingerbread houses •and more!
But more than just being a sweet story, the themes hit hard. Both Landon and Quinn had their hearts broken and are afraid to risk again. Add to that Quinn’s fear of being an inconvenience & fear of saying “no” and Landon’s trying to prove he’s more than someone’s misguided words and opinions. Man, was this ever relatable and surprisingly deep for a rom-com!
I loved it!
Content: mild innuendo/suggestive remarks; a couple guys get drunk at a bachelor party; semi-detailed kissing
_______
Audiobook: I adore Ellen Quay & Eric Fox as an audiobook duo - they brought this Christmas story alive with perfection! So grateful for this companion during a migraine.
Two divorcees, a matchmaking scheme, and a lot of gingerbread—I loved this heartwarming story of finding someone to love all of you, even the messy parts.
Hired to design gingerbread house centerpieces for a wedding in Newport, Rhode Island, Quinn unexpectedly discovers the brother of the bride, whose house and kitchen she is borrowing, is in fact NOT out of town.
Quinn is an absolute lovable mess. A fanatic of true crime podcasts, she is overly paranoid and a bit chaotic, making for the greatest meet-cute involving a frying pan. And the laughs only continue!
I instantly felt the chemistry between these two. Landon and Quinn declaring boundaries only to purposely test the limits ... whew! I've never been more excited for two characters to merely touch hands. You can just imagine the kisses!
Both having experienced divorce, there was a unique connection and understanding between them that I loved seeing included. Landon was incredibly patient, allowing Quinn to open her heart at her own pace. It was perfect. And the final chapter left me with the biggest smile!
A Christmess indeed, this was 😅 I've loved a lot of the books in the Christmas Escape series, but this one just fell so flat for me. This brings us to the plot, of which there's just....not much there. I felt like this book was bouncing all over the place. All the characters were so erratic and contradictory of themselves, so I never knew who I was rooting for or what kind of arc I should be expecting. I know this is supposed to be a fluffy Christmas novel, but there still needs to be characters that have goals and desires, and I just never got that with any of these characters. This book also mishandles a lot of the tropes it purports to use—Landon's grumpy, but not really, they're both divorced but it's never quite explained in a satisfying way, and they're fake dating, but no one really buys it...you see where I'm going with this?
Quinn's anxiety/insecurity felt like her only defining personality trait. Every time she made a decision, she'd spiral for pages until someone pulled her out, and I feel like she never really grew to the point where she was really thinking and acting for herself. Her relationship with her mom was also weird and controlling, but never got addressed as a bad thing?? If your grown mother is controlling your grown adult decisions, that's something I don't want to see normalized as "lol my mom's just so invested in my life!"
The chemistry between her and Landon was also kind of all over the place. It was dual POV, but they were both so in their heads about their previous relationships that it was hard to feel invested in what was happening in the present moment.
Overall, this was a real miss for me, and I'd recommend checking out Faking Christmas or Not So Holiday Paradise in this series if you're looking for a holiday novel with a bit more substance.
I am loving these Christmas Escape novels! A bunch of my favorite authors got together and all wrote one of these. I’ve only read 2 so far, but they were both so good. I love that they stand alone, so they can be read in any order.
This one is Quinn’s story. Quinn is a social media influencer. She’s been badly hurt by her ex-husband. I had to laugh at how she didn’t trust anyone. Quinn is just a little bit paranoid about a lot of things. And that made her feel real. Quinn was asked by her good friend, Nikki, to make gingerbread houses as center pieces for her wedding. And these were not just any gingerbread houses. They were works of art.
Little did Quinn know that she was going to fly clear across the country to make the gingerbread houses. Or that Nikki was going to throw her and Nikki’s brother, Landon together.
I loved Landon. He’s just the right type of nice guy. I love the way he took all of the craziness of life in stride. And how he helped Quinn to be a bit more that was as well. These two really complemented each other. But it did take them quite a while to figure things out.
I loved everything about this one. It’s time to read a few more of these!
I was sent an e-copy of A Newport Christmess as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.
This story was really cute! I wasn’t sure about the whole plot line of two divorcees finding love again but, while it wasn’t my favorite, I did love the message of healing and learning to trust again. Of loving someone who is a hot mess and probably always will be (honestly, I related to Quinn on a very deep level in that regard) was such a sweet message and I loved Landon and Quinn. • Four out of five
I’m just the biggest Jess Heileman fan. She’s so extraordinary at taking characters who are usually the secondary characters or the villains…the misfits or unlikeables and really makes them shine on center stage.
A Newport Christmess is a little heavier than your usual holiday read. It navigates two adults who are now divorced and caught in a matchmaking scheme that neither had anticipated. This is Jess’ first contemporary and she’s created a fun voice for herself in this genre.
Quinn is a true crime junkie who really doesn’t quite have it together to say the least..is she truly really for a relationship or is more time needed to heal all wounds.
Landon is annoyed he’s been taking off site for work and he wants nothing to do with his sisters matchmaking schemes… but Quinn’s quirky charm and mannerisms just might make him do a double take.
I liked the second chance divorce dynamic. Both of the characters understood what a messy separation implied and gave the other some good support to heal. A fun setting, meddling family dynamics and some beautiful gingerbread decorating made this a unique Christmas story that complimented the rest of the Christmas Escape series nicely!
Can’t wait to see what Jess does next! If you haven’t read her Nabob historical I TRULY think that one is a work of art.
Everything you've loved about Jess' regency writing...can now also be experienced in her debut into the contemporary Rom Com genre!
This book starts off right from the beginning sucking you into to Quinn's insecurities and also her strengths that make her individual and unique. Landon will be making you deep sigh every paragraph, and these two together will have you laughing out loud one paragraph and swooning the next!
This book is a fast paced, page turning, sleep stealing wonder! I can't recommend it enough! This is the holiday read you've been waiting your entire life for and here are a few reasons why:
-True Crime Obsession -Panic Induced Over-Thinker -Frying Pans -Baking -Great Banter-especially when the words wont stop lol -Forced Proximity/Fake Dating/Friends to More -Two Divorcees with a lot in common -Loveable Side Characters
This book comes out November 9 and I'm adding it to my review so you can calendar appropriately. **cereal for dinner is completely acceptable this day, just incase you needed someone to validate that ;)**
Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
This was my first time reading a Jess Heilman book and from what I have heard she writes amazing historicals that I am excited to read! Well let me say she also writes amazing contemporary romances too because I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent reading A Newport Christmess!
A Newport Christmess is part of the Christmas Escape series, a series of 7 sweet Christmas romances by different authors. This book tells the story of Quinn and Landon. Quinn travels to Newport to make gingerbread centerpieces for Nikki's wedding. There she meets Landon, Nikki’s grumpy brother. Landon and Quinn are both getting over divorices and have been deeply hurt by their past relationships. Neither one of them is looking for love.
Quinn was such a quirky and fun character! I loved her obsession with true crime podcasts and how she would listen to them and then freak herself out. She had me smiling so many times! Quinn is also insecure from her failed marriage. She is a social media influencer and sees perfection all around her. She doesn’t feel enough anymore and tries to hide behind the beautiful creations she bakes on social media and finds her following going down. Little does she know that what people want is to see her even if she isn’t perfect and has flaws. It is something Landon helps her see through his care and attention. I loved the message that we don’t have to be perfect to be loved. People will love us by seeing the real us. It was a very real message that stood out to me. Quinn was so bright and kind throughout the book. She really came to life for me and her personality was shining through the entire story!
Other things I loved:
-Dual POV so we know what Landon is thinking too -Landon and Quinn’s snow walk -Quinn’s allergic reaction and Landon’s care for her -Amazing gingerbread houses -Scene with Landon’s grandma -Landon and Quinn snowed in with the power out -That swoony first kiss
I won’t be forgetting about this one anytime soon and it will be going on my reread list. This was such a well written romance that had well developed characters I fell in love with! There were so many funny moments that had me laughing and smiling. Add this one to your holiday reading list!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Okay Jess, I see you! You may not have ever planned on writing a contemporary but I am thanking all the Christmas stars that you did! I loved this adorably delightful Christmas romance so much that I cannot stop smiling and my heart feels like it is going to explode with happiness!
Quinn travels to Newport to make gingerbread centerpieces for Nikki's wedding and meets Nikki's slightly grumpy brother Landon.
Both Quinn and Landon are divorced and neither is looking for love but all they needed was a little nudge from a formidable matchmaker and a little Christmas magic and the sparks are flying. (Who knew power outages could be so romantic?)
I love that the main characters were so quirky and lovable, and I cannot get over all the adorable moments and all the ways that Landon took care of Quinn. His attentiveness and reassurances were just what her insecurities needed. And can we just talk for a minute about the first kiss scene?
This book is pure heartwarming Christmas magic and I love the beautiful theme that life is always going to be chaotic and messy but having someone to go through it all with you? That's the real gift.
Want to give yourself a gift this Christmas? Go read this book. Jess has a way of bringing characters to life and these are ones you definitely want to meet!
I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.
°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ Cute romance between a baker/influencer and lawyer who pretend to be dating to avoid being set up with other people! Quinn Cook and Landon Aker come from two different worlds but when they end up living in the same house because of their matchmaker, Quinn’s friend and Landon’s sister, they realize they have a lot more in common with each other than they thought. They’re both divorced and know what it feels like to doubt yourself afterwards in relationships. Together, they learn to grow more confident in who they are and discover that their doomed past relationships don’t define their self-worth.
°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ I liked the Christmas vibes in this book! Their scenes together were very sweet in the first half. I liked the scenes where Landon took care of Quinn when she had an allergic reaction, when the power went out and they kept each other company, and when they bonded while Quinn created the gingerbread centrepieces. I did like that Landon was very sweet in comforting Quinn and reassuring her that he would love her regardless of the imperfections that she hates about herself. It was pretty wholesome and I liked that they were able to work things out on their own despite what others were thinking about it.
I do feel like their relationship kind of became a little rushed and it wasn’t slowed down a bit more to show how deep their emotional bond really went, but maybe it was just me. Their scenes together were cute but something was just missing in their chemistry and I’m not sure what it is. I didn’t feel as connected to them as the other couples in the earlier books of this series.
°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ Overall, it was a cute read and I got through this one fairly quick!
What to expect: - Holiday romance 🎄 - Baker/social media influencer FMC x lawyer MMC 🧁💼 - Forced proximity - Fake dating - Closed-door romance 🚪 - Dual POV written in past tense
When I heard this takes place in Newport, RI I had to read it! I lived in Newport for a few years and it's one of my favorite places. It was so fun revisiting this charming town, which brought back a lot of nice memories for me. The story was also enjoyable, and I loved the characters of Landon and Quinn. I thought it was well written, had a nice flow and it was easy to lose track of time as I read. I thought Ms. Heileman did a fantastic job writing this charming Christmas romance.
Content Rated G Clean romance- kissing, no language or violence
I just want to say that I am 100% on board with all of the fake dating troupes! And forced proximity! And Christmas! And CHEMISTRY! And heartfelt conversations. And all of the oversharing!
Landon was (as every rom-com hero is) DELICIOUS! He was such a sweetheart under the initial brooding! *chefs kiss* He was such a steady character and he really was a great character to ground Quinn!
Quinn was a bit of a disaster! 😅 (I say that with all the love in my heart) She was an actual mess, and while I loved the contrast to Landon’s character I did find her to be a little immature. Her constant back & forth, while understandable, got a bit tedious at times. She was a fun quirky character though, and was great for Landon!
While I love a good fast-paced romance, Quinn really didn’t seem quite ready for it. She couldn’t make up her mind, and that was making my head spin a bit.
But the last chapter & epilogue?!? *insert ALL of the heart eyes* It really was ADORABLE!! It was a cute read, and I did love the shared trauma of being “newly” divorced and helping each other! They really were a great match for each other!
A Newport Christmess is my favorite Christmas read this year! The setting is Christmas perfect from the snow to the beautiful seaside town of Newport, Rhode Island. I felt like I was there with the characters. Quinn is so real, genuine, and authentic, you couldn’t help but love her. From her tiny stature to her stubbornness about being stronger than she looks, I loved everything about her character. I think we all feel a little bit like Quinn at some point. Unsure of ourselves and if we have any good qualities at all. I was rooting her on the entire book! Landon was a dream, who wouldn’t fall for such a handsome and kind man? Together they had such electricity and I could feel the sparks flying off of the page! The supporting characters were every bit as enthralling as the main characters. I felt like I knew each and every one of them by the end of the story. I need more of this world that Heileman has created. It is magical and full of people who feel like my friends.
This book will give you a book hangover! I couldn’t put it down, I stayed up way too late to finish it, I had to know how it ended! A new author to me, Heileman is now on my auto purchase list. I loved this Christmas RomCom and am still thinking about it the day after. Find yourself a cozy chair and get comfy because once you start reading you will not be able to stop! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
What happens when your Rhode Island house is given to a chaotic, insecure, social media influencer baker who wields frying pans for the Christmas holiday season? Swoony sparks, lots of laughter, and amazing gingerbread houses.
Both Landon and Quinn are divorced, although he's further along the healing path, and the way they could relate to one another was endearing. Quinn is struggling to move on with her life and Landon is just what she needs. I love how easy she is to connect with and how charming and sweet Landon is with her--they are the perfect blend. The situations that resulted from this forced proximity situation made me laugh and swoon, and even cringe at times, but this whole book was as delightfully melty and satisfying as a mug of rich, thick chocolate.
Heileman has the perfect RomCom voice that allowed me to escape into the pages of a charming, sweet, and unputdownable book.
Content: mild romance
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
Updated audiobook review: It's been 2 years since I read this Christmas romance and it was fun to be relive all the funny and swoony scenes. I love when audiobooks have dual narrators and I really liked the ones chosen for this one. The female narrator made Quinn come alive for me.
Original review: I love Jess Heileman's regency romances, so when I heard she had written a contemporary romance I knew I had to read it. I was not disappointed!! This was one of my favorite November reads and definitely one of my favorite Christmas romances.
I loved Quinn and Landon!! They've both had bad divorces so they definitely aren't looking for love, but little do they know someone is playing matchmaker. Quinn is simply adorable. She loves true-crime podcasts but they make her more cautious and paranoid than she already is (thanks to an overprotective mother), but that leads to the best meet-cute I've read in awhile!! I'm smiling just thinking about it. Oh and Quinn's habit of saying "curse words" instead of cursing is too cute for words!! Landon's a slightly grumpy hunk but he's all soft inside. I loved how he took care of Quinn when she had the allergic reaction to the Christmas tree--see he's a softie. These two had so much chemistry between them and were so cute together!
What I loved about this book: dual point of view, forced proximity, fake dating, and the amazing gingerbread houses!! I almost forgot about the heart-warming scene with Landon's grandma! If you're a crier you might need to have the tissues nearby.
This is part of the Christmas Escape series by a group of authors but each one is definitely a standalone. I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
This is my first book by this author, and I initially picked it up because the cover was so cute! Thought it would give off the perfect Christmas vibes.
While it did, I’m not too sure how I feel about it overall. The premise sounded cute and interesting, but the FMC wasn’t my favorite… I felt like the storyline just kept going back and forth and was a bit chaotic, and nothing really ended up happening except more indecisiveness from our FMC. I also had no desire to pick this book up halfway through and had to switch to the audiobook for a bit 😅
Overall, it was a cute closed door romance, so there was that. Not sure if I’ll continue with the other books right now, but maybe possibly in the future if I ever run across them again?
The kissing got a bit much at times. A little too passionate for my tastes. I truly appreciated the vulnerability shown by Quinn and Landon to risk being honest instead of allowing misunderstandings to remain.
This book just heightened my Christmas cheer up a notch, ok, many notches. Seriously, Jess Heileman, you nailed it with this contemporary Christmas romance, and I am here for all of it.
Quinn and Landon are both divorced, hesitant to even think of the idea of a relationship, scarred, beautiful and thrown together for the weeks leading up to Landon's sister's wedding. What could go wrong? And...what could go right?
You guys, these characters will instantly have you hooked. With all the feels, insecurities, dreams and quirky traits that make Quinn and Landon rich with chemistry, it is bound to be a beautiful and messy ride to love. And let me tell you IT IS. Between fake dating, forced proximity, baking, crime podcasts, power outages, gingerbread houses and more, you'll find yourself laughing, your heart breaking, melting and swooning all in one read.
Great characters, wonderful writing, witty banter and Christmas cheer are found in this newest book from Jess Heilman, as part of the Christmas Escape series. I 100% recommend this book to anyone wanting romance, Christmas and a great read!
*I received a complimentary copy from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors. A review was not required, and all opinions are my own.
These Christmas Escape books are so fun. They are standalone books. Each one I have read just brings a smile and a much needed Christmas vibe. It also helps that I’m a huge Jess Heileman fan. Quinn has been recently hurt by a fresh divorce and has trust issues. I appreciated how that made her relatable and genuine. I really liked Landon. He’s just a good guy. The slow burn with these two characters is worth the wait. This book is funny and sweet, mixed with the chaos of Christmas (and matchmaking). It’s a great holiday read.
I liked this one y’all! Unfortunately not as much as I hoped but we’ll get into that.
All of the Christmas/holiday vibes were here. Adored the setting and plot set-up. The gingerbread houses were a fun touch and I wish I could see those in person!!
Landon was a dreamboat. I absolutely couldn’t get enough of him. He was clearly smitten from the get-go and really pulled out all of the stops in genuine ways to show Quinn that love after divorce is still possible. I loved a lot of the conversations and sentiments expressed between them and it pulled at my heartstrings at the tough things both main characters had to work through.
I did struggle with Quinn’s character. For most of the book I was cool with the mindset and difficulties. It worked with the plot and made sense for everything else. BUT, the character growth hardly showed up and that wasn’t until 90% through the book. I wanted to see a bit more of it overall and watch Quinn learn for herself how much she’s worth and how much she deserves.
There’s a lot of great moments here and I truly did have a good time reading it. Even with my one main issue I’d still recommend because a lot of people I know loved this one!
Overall audience notes: - Contemporary Holiday Romance - Language: none - Romance: kisses - Trigger/Content Warnings: both main characters are divorced, emotionally manipulative parents
This book started out promising, with a unique premise involving two divorced main characters and gingerbread wedding centerpieces, but it went downhill. Quinn’s paranoia was initially endearing and relatable, but it quickly became annoying and over the top. Landon was sweet, but he needed a little more depth.
It seemed to me that nothing really happened in the story except for the relationship going in endless cycles. This made things somewhat dull and repetitive.
Also, a brief rant. There’s a scene where Quinn has an allergic reaction to pine trees, and I can’t help but feel that allergic reactions in romcoms are overdone. Having experienced one myself, especially when it led to anaphylaxis, I can assure you it’s far from sexy or charming. Hitch managed to pull it off once, but other romcoms should stop trying to replicate it.
Another fantastic book by author Jess Heileman who showed her fans she has a strong voice for contemporary and once again delivers a wonderful romantic story. What I liked most about this book was that we got to see both Landon and Quinn's POVs. It really anchored me to the characters and gave me a deeper appreciation for who they were and what they were feeling. I think everyone feels a little bit like Quinn at some point in their life and I found her "messy" relatable. The emotions and self-doubt, not only with her own view of herself, but way she worried about how others saw her, was very realistic especially in a social media age and when there is pressure to be a people pleaser. I loved Landon! What a total sweetheart. He was so patient and I loved that there was such vulnerable honesty between the two of them. Both main characters are divorced and I thought the author did a great job showing that not all divorces are equal and the different ways this type of situation can have effects on people both mentally, emotionally, and physically. This is a clean romance with some excellent romantic tension and swoony kisses that will make you smile. I definitely recommend it! I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Newport Christmess is everything. I am obsessed. The writing, the MCs, the romance, the gingerbread houses, the conflict, the side characters—gosh, *french kiss* 🤌🏼
And can we talk about the communication throughout this book? Bless you, @authorjessheileman for creating adult characters that communicate like adults. Every time I thought miscommunication was going to become an issue, I was pleasantly surprised when the book pulled in a different (and much better) direction.
Quinn and Landon. Their relationship and their attraction is swoony and sweet and just perfect. And on top of all that, this book gave me ALL the Christmas feels.
Excuse me while I go bake myself a gingerbread house 🎄
