BODIE AND BROCK THOENE (pronounced Tay-nee) have written over 45 works of historical fiction. These best sellers have sold more than 10 million copies and won eight ECPA Gold Medallion Awards.
Bodie began her writing career as a teen journalist for her local newspaper. Eventually her byline appeared in prestigious periodicals such as U.S. News and World Report, The American West, and The Saturday Evening Post. She also worked for John Wayne’s Batjac Productions (she’s best known as author of The Fall Guy) and ABC Circle Films as a writer and researcher. John Wayne described her as “a writer with talent that captures the people and the times!” She has degrees in journalism and communications.
Bodie and Brock have four grown children—Rachel, Jake, Luke, and Ellie—and five grandchildren. Their sons, Jake and Luke, are carrying on the Thoene family talent as the next generation of writers, and Luke produces the Thoene audiobooks.
Bodie and Brock divide their time between London and Nevada.
I really enjoyed this book. Sequoia Scout and the Man from Shadow Ridge were definitely my two favorite books in the series, although I did not enjoy the series as a whole. Although there were ruthless characters in this story, there were not as many murders described in the book, although the one description of a grizzly attack made me wince. There was more variety in the dangers (bad guys, natives, nature itself, and a combination of these), and I appreciated the air of mystery. There were a few people about which you never learned the outcome, but that is more true to real life. Of course the hero is always in the right place at the right time down to the split second and always has the intuition to know when danger is near.
The author plunges readers into a whirlwind of clashing cultures, greed, and stark natural beauty as strivers, miners, schemers, soldiers, ranchers, and others are caught between the forces of good and evil. While this book felt a bit like a rush job and somewhat thinly plotted compared to other titles in the series, it didn't prevent me from enjoying the story.
I have not read a book by Brock Thoene alone. I’m more familiar with the titles co-written with his wife where Brock provides the historical research. This unknown title came into my hands and I had to read it.
The Thoenes are among my favorite authors, so I couldn't help but pick up a Western omnibus authored by them when I saw it for sale at my local library. Sure, the three novels that make up the tome were all published fifteen-plus years ago, but I'm a bit new to the works of Bodie and Brock, so I'd never read or even heard of these stories before. Sequoia Scout is the first of the three novels contained within said omnibus, and, if the premiere installment is any indication, the entire series will be really good. Plenty of action and adventure, with likable heroes and even a little romance are all found within the pages of this book. I did feel that some of the Thoenes' other works were a touch better than this one; however, I don't think Bodie and Brock fans will be disappointed, and I should know, since I am one myself.
I went to the library and they didn't have the book I wanted so I grabbed this book by the same author. I didn't think I would like it but it turned out to be a fun quick read. An american scout goes to the west and has experiences with Indians and the Mexican Missions.
