Le gay du train

Rate this book

Reread September 2021:
Ok, in my original review, I asked if I could reread it straight away. I waited a couple of months. Honestly, I could still reread this for a third time straight after reading it for the second time. It's just that good! Everything I said in my first review is true this second time around. It's still one of the cutest, funniest books I've ever read. Once again I couldn't stop myself from smiling like a fool while I read it. Once again I'm all warm inside from the feelings of this book. Gay on a Train is by far my favorite read of 2021. It might even be one of my top 10 books ever. I can see myself reading this many, many times.

Original review:
I loved this book so very much. So much that there was no way to stop myself from finishing it in one go. Even though I didn't want it to end. That's how good this book was.

K.C. Wells managed to write a GFY/Bisexual awakening book that I loved to pieces. Even though this trope is a trope that's usually is not working for me. The way Lee and Daniel's relationship developed was just so easy and sweet. No angst. No drama from Lee's side about "suddenly" having feelings for another man.

This is an utterly sweet and so very romantic book. The epilogue had me in happy tears. Can I reread it now?

KC Wells does intense so well, and I’m a huge fan of her dramatic novels, but I’m thrilled to discover how beautifully she does humor! Ms. Wells carries a wonderful lightness throughout Gay on a Train. There are highly emotional moments here, and the characters face some intense, life changing events, but Wells maintains the upbeat momentum through the whole novel.

A large chunk of credit also goes to the narrator, Seb Yarrick. The smile in his voice reinforces the charm and humor Ms. Wells has written into the story, and kept me chuckling the whole way through.

I love it when Kc Wells goes steamy but I think I love it even more when she pulls out a romance like this which just makes me feel happy.

It's a lovely exploration of sexual awareness and awakening when that spark of attraction comes from a source you might not have thought of before.

The secondary characters were all fab too, I loved the bunch of housemates Lee lived with and I really liked Daniels friends.

The reaction of Lee's family also felt honest and nothing out of the ordinary, to me their reactions to meeting Daniel and Lee's bisexuality announcement flowed naturally in the narrative.

It's low angst, medium steam and very funny at times too. A definite favourite.

I put off rating and reviewing this one for a while, because I just couldn't decide what to do with it.

The premise was fun. I enjoyed myself during the first bit, but that didn't last long. It got boring. I had to skip several scenes because it simply couldn't hold my interest. I couldn't connect with the two MCs. They felt flat to me.

Their jokes weren't funny to me either. I also got extremely irritated by the - in my opinion - overuse of parenthesis for side comments. I know that's a tiny thing to get upset about, but it happened constantly and it interrupted the flow of the story.

I can theoretically see how many people would enjoy this story, but I didn't. Probably a case of: It's me, not the book....yada yada yada...

This was cute and sweet, especially the first half or so. I loved the initial meeting, Lee’s freak out, the first date. Although I didn’t get the humour. There are two pages about things going in holes making Lee think about sex and I’m like “is this supposed to be funny?” And a bi uncle is a buncle? What? I’m supposed to laugh?

And then about half way through it turned to be pretty much just sex. I ended up skimming over sex scenes. I liked the coming out scenes, and the epilogue. But overall not much happened in the book.

So overall I thought it was cute but a bit boring and disappointing. Considering all the 5 star reviews, maybe it was just not for me.

I loved everything about this book! I didn't want it to end. It starts off with an adorable meet cute on a train ride that is only 19 minutes long. Daniel asks Lee out on a date. Lee, who identifies to this point as straight, says yes...he is just drawn to Daniel. What follows is just such a wonderfully romantic, heartwarming courtship between Daniel and Lee. There was no angst or drama, just the development of a relationship between the 2 MCs. There were honest and real conversations as Lee struggled to come to terms with his sexuality...between Lee and Daniel, between Lee and his friends, between Lee and his sister...they were so real and refreshing. Daniel was a fabulous character...he was so loving and patient and kind. The way their relationship evolved was so perfect, their connection was so real, their intimacy so genuine. There was some very steamy scenes, but they were balanced so well with the story they made my heart flutter! There was also a lightness about the book that just made everything flow perfectly!
This is such a well written book. It just left me feeling happy, smiley and so good! I enjoyed every bit of it!

Seb Yarrick did a great job bringing this story to life!

Every now and again, I read books that I know will be bad, for the lols. It heals the soul. You have a laugh, write a funny review about how wacky the plot and the dialogue is, and maybe write a banging acoustic song about it that everyone wishes you would stop singing under your breath five years after the fact (impossible. It's too catchy).

Other times, I read a book that I know will be bad, for the lols, but which is actually so incredibly boring that the heights of its atrocities are anchored down by the sheer effort it takes to keep your eyelids open while reading. Take a guess which one this is? Funny review? Impossible. Catchy song? Not gonna happen (you can put the gun down).

-

I promised previously that I would explain why I was reading this book in particular, and though I don't need to explain every little thing I do, mom, (despite what my interior monologue, always conscious of the ways I may or may not be shaming myself in public, says) it is vital that I confess the sins that led me down this path, somewhere, to someone, if only so that I can sleep at night.

At the public library where I work, members are able to request books onto the catalogue for the price of £1 (thats less than half a black coffee, bro!) rather than having to buy the book for themselves. This can be used for bad (local TERF groups have been requesting gender critical stock en masse, filling our shelves with hate speech and incitement to violence against a minority group), for good (myself and other staff have been counter-requesting trans positive stock en masse to combat the gender critical stock, resulting in an incredible catalogue of queer graphic novels and queer academic texts both), and for, uh, neutral (just requesting the damn book you want because for some reason we don't already have it and there's no bigger picture or agenda you just want it). Enter: the gender non-conforming fourteen year old who made a stock request with me a year ago, thinking they were doing the latter (neutral), when actually they were doing a fourth, new thing (requesting distressingly bad, self-published gay erotica, extremely explicit though regretfully lacking kink). I sent off the request to the bibliographic department. Now, you're probably thinking, didn't you check that the book was age-appropriate before ordering it for a minor? Well, no, I didn't think to. I didnt want to make the little queer (wholesome) uncomfortable by over-analysing their impulsive gay decisions (I genuinely just thought it was a romantic drama). Learning afterwards its reputation online for being porn, I surged with anxiety for days, waiting to be found out, waiting to be FIRED for doing GAY AGENDA to CHILD.

I didnt get fired. The bibliographic department, it turns out, doesn't monitor the content of member requests. They'll buy whatever the hell you want. Bullet dodged, for me. The fuel for many difficult meetings with management re: why are TERFs able to request so many hugely harmful books without it ever getting flagged, for the counter-TERF power rangers that I belong to (more on that another day. Look, this is my story. I can tell it out of order if I want to.)

Anyway. The (usually extremely chatty) queer teenager in question borrowed the book when it came in and then returned it a week later without a word. I was worried this whole time since that they had read these obscene sex scenarios and been brain damaged by them, or that their mother, who would later be out to get me (dont ask) might taser me in the scrote. Such concern was unwarrented. This teenager, addicted to YouTube and bearing the attention span of that puppy from your favourite tiktok video, likely did not make it beyond the first few chapters.

Gay on a Train is one of the most amateur and terribly boring pieces of fiction I've ever had the misfortune of reading, and though I try to celebrate every completed work by a writer of any quality, as each is a display of blood, sweat, tears, and cum, this just feels like somebody is pointing and laughing at me. From its inconsistent and out of focus paragraph breaks in flowery font (#LoveWinsLoveIsLove) to the repetitive dialogue about train times and journeys (not in a fun trainspotting way just in a writer's first serious fanfic way) to the boring dates (watching How to Train Your Dragon on the sofa, followed by plans to watch How to Train Your Dragon 2 for the next date, which gets interrupted by an attempt at chemistry in which the chronically sparkling-eyed dancer Daniel paints our meanspirited and dull narrator's toenails) to the protagonist's yaoi-esque 'I'm not gay but I just like this one man and have never been interested in cock before' - which, sure, can absolutely happen, but also is often so blatantly a way for straight women (not a comment on Wells as I know nothing about them) to write otherwise straight men into having anal sex, allowing the character to keep their straight man credentials while still fucking the man of the author's fantasies, with zero genuine interrogation of their sexuality - there really is little to latch onto here. It doesn't feel earnest, worked for, wrangled, edited, artful (heaven forbid), or like a labour of love. It just feels like someone took a reddit story as a prompt and after three pages realised they didn't know how to write. The whole world is your oyster, baby! You know? For example, in my version of the second date, Daniel is in full cosplay as Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon throughout (as they both appear to be in love with the character), and when he leaves to collect nail Polish stuff to do Lee's feet, he returns with plastic sheets and begins papering the living room in them, top to bottom, creating a Dexter-style kill-room while our uncomfortable protagonist battles against his intrigued 'am I gay' hard-on to escape his own ass-crevice in the couch before the knives can come out (of course it's probably all a misunderstanding-Daniel is very bad at painting nails and gets polish everywhere, spraying geysers of blue and pink all over his living room like blood from the neck of a severed head in Kill Bill, so this plastic is simply a daily part of his practice). I don't know. I'm just spitballing, here.

The sex... Well, I flicked through much of it, and at first it wasn't too bad, if a little heavy-handed (look, I enjoy the whole spectrum, from fade to black to dirty multi-cumming marathon fucks - where the characters are so sheened with sweat and semen that they can't tell the difference between perspiration and sperm, they're just salty from top to bottom - written either by pros or amateurs, so if I don't like your sex scenes, there's a serious problem) but during the back half of the book the narrative descends into this surreal montage of every sex position imagined by a porn director on coke, just to fully initiate our Maybe-Gay protagonist into the gay sex scene. It's not primal need but intellectual curiosity that drives them against each other again and again at all angles, or perhaps ego. That's probably the difference between good and bad sex. If it feels primal on the page, it pretty much doesn't matter what bland or disgusting stuff your characters are doing to each other, but if it feels intellectual, you can't expect anyone to hump the bed as they read, can you, or to dress up as Hiccup and scream, 'Eat me, toothless! Eat! Me!'

-

But you know, you have to write a hundred bad manuscripts before you can write a good one. Its ok, dog. For a writer this inexperienced, or untrained, though, I would recommend taking up a couple of courses, joining a group, taking out a writing textbook from the library, experimenting with style, watching gay arthouse flicks like Knife+Heart, and finally, reading romance that isn't fifty shades of grey or fanfiction. They have their place in the romance ecosystem, but from one amateur to another, emulating them is only ever going to hamstring you. You are what you eat, writer, and you deserve to be better than junk food somebody buys on a bender because they think a reheated kebab will heal their alcohol poisoning. I will congratulate you on one thing, though. At least you had the courage to publish a novel. (Edit: very sorry for condescending the author. I thought they were a first time author, not a Brand who should know better by now. Will be more careful next time.)

...

Shit! This DNF hate-read review for my sins has gone on all morning! I wrote this while waiting for my HPV jab. Had to go to the walk-in clinic because I couldn't get an appointment; the sex clinic wouldn't answer their phone no matter how many times I tried to get their attention. Just like this guy I hooked up with once. Men, am I right, girls? Anyway. This brat is off to go get a haircut. This was a sweet, no angst story that left me with a smile. It was a great way to spend the day forgetting about everything else and just enjoying Lee's unexpected bi-awakening. After a bit of concern at first, Lee embraces the fact that he's attracted to Daniel and just goes with it. Dating, exploring his attraction, meeting the friends and realizing that everything he felt was real.

Daniel was wonderful, and although we don't get his POV, we know exactly what his feelings are. He's not willing to be an experiment, but he also doesn't want to deny what he feels for Lee. The MCs have a great connection and the cast of supporting characters added to the story, helping Lee work through his concerns.

Sweet, sexy and fun, just the thing if you're looking for a no-angst romance to take you away from real life for a bit.

The title of Gay on a Train by K.C. Wells had intrigued me for a long time. For some reason I'd never gotten around to reading it until today.

Actually it was an even better read than I had expected. A wonderful cast of characters, low angst, and, in a word, cute.

Ok let me first say that every Kc book I've read I've loved...And this one is no different...Lee meets Daniel on a train and connects with him and says yes to a date even though he's though of himself as straight...Lee doesn't start stressing over his new found status and Daniel guides him along at a slow pace to get him used to being with a man..This is just a perfect easy read...You will love Daniel and Lee and you will definitely love the ending..That is the best ending to a book i've read this year...A book you won't want to put down until you've finished with two great MC's and great secondary characters too..AMAZING x

A light, funny bisexual-discovery story. There are no real moments of drama, no angst or big obstacles. Just a low-key ride along with Lee as he discovers his sexuality and emotional connections are more flexible than he thought, when a moment of attraction turns his life around. Daniel is a sweetheart. Lee's narrative voice was a lot of fun, and there's just enough plot to move the relationship forward. Some secondary characters add interest. A good choice when you want a low-angst story to make you chuckle and smile with two engaging main characters.

A super-cute, super-sweet feel good story that is fully focused on the couple, and one MC's orientation realisation. Loved the easy listening nature of this book; its not fraught with angst and soul-searching - rather a celebration of acceptance.

Loved the ending.

Narrated by Seb Yarrick - excellent.

That was so lovely. I can’t remember smiling so much throughout a book in a long while. What a beautiful and sweet love story, but never too sweet. I just wanted to squeeze those two boys for how genuine, open, and loving they were. I hope everyone’s love story is like this.

Two men on a train enjoying their budding friendship. One is gay and the other is straight or he always thought he was. Lee and Daniel’s story is a fun and sexy story about finding your true self. I truly enjoyed their adventure. Lee learns that there is more for him to learn about himself than he ever thought and with Daniel by his side Lee is in for a wonderful ride. I loved watching their romance take shape. Both men are great characters and together they make a beautiful read. This story moves along at a good pace and pulled me in right from the start. The two men have a connection that cannot be denied, and both are ready to explore it. The author weaves a beautiful story that is filled with emotions and trust.

This is a book about two guy's meeting on the train to work .

There are very few books that I will give them a five star and this book is one of them . At first a thought that this would be your typical story were a gay guy meets a straight guy on the train one morning your average first gay to love ago . But to my utter surprise this book turned out to be an amazing love story I truly fell in love with these characters Led and Daniel where one of the most adorable couples that I have read about in a while . This book was pure romance with some serious issue that the gay community has to deal with daily I loved watching these boy's fall madly in love with each other . Plus there were so many great moments in this book the character development from Lee was awesome . I'm looking forward to reading more from this Author .

If you want a sweet, romantic story that to can't out down, this is it. It's a beautiful story of a man who is struggling to find out who he is. And it's because of a beautiful man that sits beside him on the train and is looking like life is getting him beyond down. He starts a conversation and it ends up leading to a date, where he's really questioning if he ever was straight. And the truth was, he never was. And this beautiful man, is giving him time to figure it out. But he know what he wants. The beautiful man, Daniel. Lee struggled daily trying to get past the labels of what he is, but is learning with the help of family and friends, it doesn't matter. All that matters is how you feel about the person. And Lee is falling hard. He's everything Lee wants in a person and that's just after a week. But he's learning to trust Daniel and trust his heart and it's steering him into the unknown, but it's a place he's loving being. He gets a lot of firsts with this man and it's changed his life. Someone sees him. And he sees Daniel. All of him. And he's happy. It doesn't mean there's not some stumbles along the way, but they talk and they work through it and are patient with each other. And it's made the difference.
It's a beautiful sweet story and I loved it so much.

Low-angst story with a bit more humor than I'm used to from this author. What a great surprise. Lee with his bi awakening and Daniel patiently moving along without being a pushover. Lovely secondary cast of characters, lots of smexy times and loads of sweetness overall. Fun read.

This book was based on a story in Reddit, and that's why It caught my attention. 🧐🤓

Apparently a heterosexual man wrote on that page that he had met a guy in a train who asked him out on a date, and he said yes to the date so he was kind of confused because he thought himself straight. And then the author takes over, trying to develope the story.

It was a cute read, the beginning was promising actually, but when they started to date I felt like the interactions lost some spark, there were weird moments and the relationship developed super fast.

It was cute, but it could have been more. Somebody knows what really happened? Would love to know. 🥰🤩

This was so cute and sweet, as well as funny and, let’s face it, pretty steamy, too!
I absolutely adored Lee and Daniel. I loved how Lee takes his newly-discovered bisexuality in stride, and with a great dose of bravery, without ever hiding it, instead owning it with pride. And I loved how Daniel never pressures him to go further than he’s comfortable with, but without babying him, but always checking for Lee’s well-being.
I love K.C. Well’s writing, I always read more “intense” and a bit angsty books, but this lighter one is incredibly well-written and keeps you hooked and leaves you smiling.

DNF @ 66%

I got a little bored with this one. This was a story about a straight guy who gets asked out by a guy he meets on train and says yes. And they date. That about sums it up. It was a sweet story, but every one of the characters were completely (overly) accommodating, sensitive and considerate. It was like a bunch of twenty year old dudes stuck in their grandmothers’ bodies, all perfectly polite and attentive. And using language that no twenty-year-old would use.

There were some sexy scenes for sure, but the MCs were a tad too bland and there was no conflict.

DNF. Made it to 50% and just had to bail. Not holding my interest in any way. Slow, dull, and lumbering, not believing the bi-awakening, and not feeling any chemistry between the MCs. What's worse was the narrator's inability to differentiate the MCs from one another as well as dialogue from narrative. I was constantly confused trying to figure out who was talking and if any talking was actually taking place or if we were hearing the characters’ thoughts. Not worth any more of my time.

I couldn't put it down!

This book – swoon! I'm a sucker for out-for-you, gay-for-you, bi-awakening – whatever you want to call them – stories. When K.C. Wells announced in her Facebook group that she was going to write this story, and gave us little teasers, I knew I had to read it asap! I'm part of her review team so I knew that I could get an early copy. The problem was that I had a really heavy reading schedule and I wasn't sure I'd be able to read and review it by its July 6th release date. Well, I made time and I'm so glad I did (I've also pre-ordered a copy).

The story is told in first person by Lee and I loved the way it read. The dialogue was so natural, it was like listening to a conversation. I don't know if that makes sense or not but a lot of the time I don't care too much for first person POV stories; they seem harder to read. But reading Gay on a Train was like listening to an old friend catch me up on things since we last saw each other.

The story has a bit of a rom-com feel and a lot of that is due to Lee and his quips about his co-workers and the self-deprecating way his internal dialogue goes. He's fascinated by Daniel when they get to talking at the station waiting for their train and they continue talking after boarding. He's a bit stunned when Daniel asks him out but he says yes and then the fun starts.

Lee has 4 roommates and they add a lot of richness to the story. A couple of them help Lee work out how he feels about going out with a gay man and he's relieved to know that they are so accepting of this new side of him. Daniel has a couple of friends that we meet, too, and they also add depth to the story.

I don't really know what else to say. Telling you I couldn't put it down doesn't seem like enough but it's the truth and I can't recommend this story enough. It's going on my list of favorite books for 2020.

A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

If someone should ask me which is my favorite thing about romance books, the answer would be the first touches, like the barely there brush of fingers. And the wonderful thing about Gay On A Train is that K.C. Wells made it a beautifully written story about firsts for so, so many experiences.

It was awesome to live everything through Lee. Since the initial lock of eyes with Daniel on the train, Lee's life took a complete, surprising turn. He tried for a bit to find a new label for himself, until the moment he realized he couldn't fight the fuzzies of excitement and warmth he felt every time he tought about Daniel. I adored seeing Lee learn that sexuality is fluid, and he described it in a humorous manner and also brilliantly sensorial. For him each new encounter with Daniel was filled with the greatest intensity, every moment highly sensual and electrifying.

I absolutely loved this book, every breathtaking second of Lee and Daniel discovering each other. They were cute, sweet and incredibly steamy together. I devoured this delicious treat in one sitting and I found myself smiling all through reading it. Perfection!

For me, this is such a sweet read and so easy to enjoy. Love how the idea for this story came from K.C. Wells seeing a post on Reddit with the same premise and she took that and gave readers Lee and Daniel.
I found myself smiling through a lot of the book as Lee finds himself on a date, with a man. Something that had never crossed his mind but he can't deny the immediate "something" that he feels towards Daniel that feels just right. Daniel is his perfect match and is so patient in going at Lee's pace once he makes the decision to follow through with seeing where can things go between them. You can really feel the connection between them that develops into so much more than either man was expecting. Everything that happens feels natural and fits well into the flow of the story. Whilst I'm a fan of some angst in my stories, I really loved how Lee takes everything in stride is fully a part of the moments that he shares with Daniel.
There is a great cast of characters along with the MC's, especially Lee's housemates who are fun and easy to talk to.
Definitely a recommended read for me! I fell into the story from the first moment and loved it all the way through.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

So hot!!

A friend recommended this book to me because she thought I’d love it. She was right! I loved Daniel and Lee’s story. One of my favorite themes is bi-awakening and first times and this totally fit that bill. I loved how Lee went with his gut, and didn’t get lost in his head, when it came to his feelings about Daniel. I loved Daniel’s patience with Lee as he caught up with his new feelings. Also holy hotness *still fanning myself* the sexy times were off the chart hot! I loved how their relationship unfolded and their HEA was absolutely swoon worthy.
