Rate this book
1928. John Adams sailed away from England and the war to come, searching for a better life in Canada. However, all he found was the bottom of an empty bottle. Ashamed, he kept his past a secret, even from his wife and children.
1982. While on his deathbed, his daughter Finlay finds letters that reveal clues to his mysterious past and a family she has never met. She sails to England to search for them, but would they even want to meet her?

This book is inspired by true events and shines a vulnerable light on generational pain passed down between father and daughter. They are estranged. And while he lies on his deathbed, she discovers he led a completely different life than the one she knew. His shadowy past unravels with each letter she reads. Was her entire world a lie? After he takes his last breath, she decides to find out. She accepts that some questions may never be answered but knows deep in her heart that being brave enough to ask them at all is worth it.

It is a fantastic debut novel by a talented author. You can feel the heart of the author as she unravels her own history and that of her father. The prose is beautiful and a pleasure to read. I have so many questions I want to learn the answer to. This is what makes a great book — when it leaves you wanting more!!!
