She’s off-limits. She’s my brother’s widow. And I’ve gone and fallen in love with her.
I thought a holiday vacation would be good for the entire family. A change of scenery after my brother’s sudden death. Especially for his widow and twin daughters. I rented a cabin for the holidays. Invited the entire family. My intentions were pure. Until I’m sharing a bathroom with the woman I’ve spent years swooning over. Until she’s kissing me. Until I’m confessing I want to marry her. Then the week blows up. The word marriage fills her with fear. Still, we can’t seem to keep our hands off each other. Sneaking around in the middle of the night. But I want more. I’m not the cheating prick my brother was. And I’ll spend this whole week proving to her marriage isn’t scary if it’s with the right guy.

A very interesting read, I was happy in the end but it took me a while to decide. Clara and Lark were awesome also Barker and Lauren wasn't fond at all of Alison or Savi till the end.
It's six months after they found Lauren’s husband lifeless in his mistress’s bed. Both he and his brother were rodeo stars riding the circuit for years. The difference, even while married, Gunner took advantage of every buckle bunny that passed his way. While Barker spent his free time trying to get home to help his parents. So, when their list includes things to do for Lauren and the twins, Clara and Lark, around the ranch he did it. No questions asked.
Gunnar was supposed, to change the cracked toilet seat, for months. She had been pinched, on her a$$ by it. One day, she broke into tears sitting, on the toilet. The girls are finishing the terrible twos. She’d finished cleaning, peanut butter off every surface in, their bedroom. Changed sheets from their beds. Took them a bath. Once again, the seat pinched her skin. And she lost it, sobbing hard, so hard she hadn’t heard, Barker shouting for her. Until he broke down, the door. Panties at her ankles. Peanut butter in her hair, and her ugly crying face. The next day, when he fixes the toilet seat, she realizes she had her babies with the wrong brother.
Now, six months since their father's passing and it is the girl's first Christmas without him. Barker has rented a six-bedroom log cabin. His parents, and his sister the one that has been hostile toward her since Gunner's death.
It's been hard on everyone knowing about Gunner’s cheating ways and her having to listen to the talk around town. Barker knew about the other women. His family knew. The town knew. Yet she ignored all the whispers, and the pity looks for the girls. So, they could grow up with everything she didn’t. Parents, grandparents, and a house, they could call home.
But when Savi surprises her for Christmas. The gloves come off. She wants more with, Barker. His mom gives her, the green light. But, Savi’s stunt could possibly send her, to the point of selling the ranch, and moving away from them all, Taking the girls, with her. Savi’s not so smug, now. The tension is high. Barker and Lauren try, to keep things, as normal as, possible for the girls. Lark is having anger issues they are handling.
I overall enjoyed this book. It is just that I felt like the ending was rushed. To the point where the author wanted to force a happy ending. That's great. But, show us the progression even if it needs to go into an epilogue. I don't know a woman that would do that about turn, that quick. Why didn't she send, Savi, instead? Just saying.
I loved Lauren and Barker. Their chemistry was off the charts--kind of slow burn to scorching hot. Lauren was originally married to Gunner, Barker’s brother, after an unexpected pregnancy. Gunner was a cheater and apparently everyone in the family and in town knew about his wandering eye, but Lauren remained with him to keep their family intact. Barker always had feelings for Lauren but she was married to his brother. After she was widowed, Barker still didn’t act on his feelings initially. Instead, he became her knight in shining armor–being handyman, taking care of his twin nieces–transporting them to and from riding and singing lessons, mowing the lawn, etc. However, when Barker plans a Christmas holiday getaway for his entire family, he hopes to convince Lauren that he is the man for her forever. His sister puts up some resistance on that front. Savi, the sister of Barker and Gunner grated my nerves really until the very end. This quick read had lots of family drama mixed with holiday vacation. Gunner's mistress made an appearance and delivered some plot twists. Clara and Lark were the most adorable twins. Even though this is a novella, it delivered the same story development of a full novel. Highly recommend!
Nope. This much focus on the cheating husband and pregnant bestie mistress is only ok if they get written off forever. The cheaters family sucked. Everyone knew he was cheating and looked the other way. Her bestie/mistress was 3 months pregnant before she found out and only because the husband died in the mistresses bed. The brother in law H knew everything for years. The husband had cheated over and over with numerous women and H never said a word. The h being cool with the mistress at the end is just not for me. She didn’t have to hate her, but being her support person in the delivery room was too much. I hated everything about this except for the twins.
I was hoping for a more wholesome, happy story but unfortunately the book summary left out some key points so I was unprepared for this. A therapist would have a field day with this family. Between the snarky sister, the dead husband’s pregnant mistress/ex best friend horning in on the family vacation (thanks snarky sister), and everyone in denial in various stages over the dead husband, it just strung me out. I enjoyed some parts but overall I would have passed if I had known. Poor Lauren can’t catch her breath with all the new information and can’t even vent/rant. Not a reread for me.
Barker and Lauren's story has her having a relationship with his brother, Gunman but he passes away but not before his family seen how he treated her and was helping her and Barker fell in love while doing the FBI vs his brother should have done. But when her ex best friend, Gunnars mistress, shows up ready to have his baby what else can go wrong this Christmas.
This on pulls on the heartstrings! You have Lauren who is a mom to twins and a widow. Then you have Barker the brother in law who sets up a family Christmas vacation. He is also secretly in love with Lauren. What he thought would be a great time starts to turn into a not so fun tune with tension, anger, and unexpected guests.
3.5 stars it took me almost an entire year to finish this book.. and while I’m glad I did the lull and anger at the mistress and Savi’s attitude put me off. Ultimately I’m glad I came back to it and reread it because about 10 pages after my previous stopping point the story took off!
Love the twins!! They have different personalities and, like sisters, are not always kind to each other. And the ending was wonderful! The sneaky romance between Barker and Lauren was cute too. Still needs better proofreading … 💚❤️
Just finished reading this book. Not sure about it at the beginning but slowly got into it. Thought it a bit much at times keep going on about her late husband.
