Claire's Candles #6

Toffee Apple Torment

Rate this book
Candle shop owner, Claire Harris, loves everything about Halloween, from the crisp autumn nights to the movies, music, and costumes. Her latest toffee apple candle captures the spooky season’s magic in one jar, and according to her best friend and co-worker, Damon, the candle is a ‘one sniff sensation.’ If only the shop had more customers to test that theory...

But the lack of shoppers in Northash’s chilly square becomes the least of Claire’s worries. Her elderly neighbour, Mrs Beaton, has always been an enigma, no more so than when she’s found wandering around in her nightie delivering a simple message. There’s a woman in the garden. And it doesn’t take long for Claire to find that woman, Valerie Skelton, in a freshly dug grave amongst Mrs Beaton’s weeds.

The answers to who buried the woman take Claire down a secret tunnel hidden under the village, all the way back to a 1977 wedding day tragedy where Valerie’s sister, Melanie, died under similarly confusing circumstances. And the woman in the garden isn’t the only mystery Claire finds herself unravelling. Where have Northash’s shoppers gone, what happened at that wedding in 1977 to result in the murder of two women decades apart, and just who is Mrs Beaton?

This was a good mystery. Claire's elderly neighbor says she has found a body in her garden. They think she is crazy at first. However, they soon find out she is not lying. Now Claire tries to figure out who is behind it all. Things are messy but in the end the truth is discovered and all is well for now.

Wow, how fun was this! Loved every aspect of this well crafted story. Claire and her mom find themselves helping a woman who might have been a classical opera singer with a dead body buried in her leaves and weeds. The plot thickens as this body is linked to a previous dead woman who went missing from a wedding in 1977. I love how Frost weaved this story making us see every aspect so we could follow along with the whodunit.

The characters were so well crafted I felt like i was reading a real life 48 hours type of mystery. I have been a big fan of the Claire's Candles mysteries from book one and this one didn't disappoint. Definitely recommend this one!

I received this as an ARC from the author.

Claire Harris has a failing candle shop owner that she is running with her best friend, Damon, and runs her shop in a quaint British village. She is also daughter of a retired detective inspector. Claire, in her mid-thirties, can't help sleuthing when strange things happen on her doorstep. Her elderly neighbour, Mrs Beaton, has always been an an odd person, but she’s found wandering around in her nightie with a simple message. There’s a woman in the garden. Claire and her father in up finding a woman, in a freshly dug grave in Mrs Beaton’s garden. Claire along with her parents, help out ailing Mrs. Beaton and discover a mystery with in a mystery.
My favorite part of this book is that there is a mystery within a mystery that explains two stories of life that were troubled. The story was very detailed and thoroughly written, and had great explanation on the different parts of the plot, and storyline. Another reason why I enjoyed this book is that the story was so developed and the characters were so detailed that I wouldn’t change anything about the story there’s nothing that is lacking, or that wasn’t explained. I read it in one sitting it was so good. I would give it 6 stars if I could, recommend this book to enjoy that loves a good clean mystery.

It has been a long and greatly anticipated wait for this next instalment in the Claire’s Candles series and it does not disappoint!
Claire is a relatable and warm lead character with her trusty best friend Damon always there for her.
It was nice to see Janet, Claire’s mum, have a bigger role to play in this as she can always be relied on for some laugh out loud moments.
Agatha Frost has again come up with a plot that twists and turns and keeps you guessing right until the end.
A real page turner and brilliant that you don’t have to have read the others to enjoy this one.
Well done Agatha!.

This is the long awaited sixth book in the series and it is by far, my favourite so far.
Full stop-I could not put it down!
Claire is a protagonist that really captures my attention and her contemporary life is written realistically.
This latest offering really shows the growth and development of the core characters.
The village and its inhabitants are engaging and I cannot wait to read more about them.
As always, Agatha Frost has delivered a top notch whodunit that kept me guessing until the very end.
I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Claire is back at following her passion for candle making and crime solving. The story is exciting and takes us back in time to an old crime that is strikingly similar to a recent one. Add to that Claire's cute coupling with Ryan is coming along nicely. Love is in the air as Damon and Sally are also trying to figure out their relationship. Claire seems to be growing in every aspect of her life-business, friendships, family, and relationships! Throw in a mysterious neighbor that the Harris family takes under their care and you have a sensational story. I highly recommend this book as it is a great read.

This is my favorite cozy series, and this newest installment is the best in the series so far for me! The mystery itself is really engaging, the characters are fun and lovable, and the British small town setting cozy as ever. This one had the added bonus of all the fall and Halloween vibes - it’s the perfect time to read this!
If you want a cozy mystery series that reads like a mix between Gavin & Stacey, Bridget Jones and Gilmore Girls, Claire’s Candles is the series for you! I personally can’t wait for the next one around Christmas.

Twists and Turns through Tormented Lives

How absolutely delightful to spend time in Northash, again, trying to solve new and an old murders with Claire and her family and friends. I correctly determined the murderer well before the discovery, but, like Claire, I was constantly distracted by other possibilities. I totally love the resolutions and look forward to visiting with Claire again soon.

Edge of Your Seat Mystery

“Toffee Apple Torment”, the latest book in Agatha Frost’s “Claire’s Candles” cozy mystery series, kept me on the edge of my seat. It was great to back in Northash with Claire, her parents and friends again. I don’t want to give any “spoilers” but this book kept me up late at night as there were so many layers to the plot I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended! Already pre-ordered the upcoming book in the series!

How well do you know your neighbors?

Claire has essentially lived a couple doors from a very private woman, who could be summed up as a "crazy cat lady". Then there are two sisters who once lived in town. Claire, her mom, two best friends, and love interest are all at their own cross roads. This book in the series was a long time coming, and I read it in hours. The good news is the next book is just a few weeks away. Always an enjoyable read.

Excellent!

Claire is getting more and more into her investigations and I like that she doesn’t leave her shop unattended and even in the middle of a dangerous situation is still thinking of new ideas. I want her to be happy with Ryan I hope he will be back in the next book, and with an answer. Can’t wait.

This story involves a lost singer, a decades old murder, secrets, and an influencer. The storyline involving the neighbor was the most interesting. I thought that should have been a bigger part of the story. I liked the murder mystery too. I had it half figured out. I would have preferred to have no romance. That was the part I liked least.

It's been hot in the UK for a week now and I'm already sick of it, so I thought I'd read a cosy mystery set in my favourite time of year, Autumn, to cheer me up.

A body is found in Mrs Beaton's garden and Claire is on the case to solve it and help the elderly woman. The mystery deepens when the body is identified as that of a former resident of Northash whose sister was found dead back in 1977. How did these two women end up dead over forty years apart?

I already love this series and I have to say I think this one is my favourite yet!

As usual, the mystery is well written and I always have fun putting the clues together myself and playing detective. What I liked was there was a bit of a puzzle surrounding Mrs Beaton and her past, which she was unwilling to share, which added an extra layer to the mystery.

Claire is such a likeable character, and it's always a joy to watch her sleuthing. What I liked even more about this novel is the fact her mother Janet, who used to come across as prickly and judgemental, seems to have softened even more since the last novel and is even trying to help solve the mystery.

Some more secondary characters get more of a leading role in this book, but I didn't mind too much as we get to see another side to them, making them a little more realistic instead of just a sounding board for Claire and her theories.

I cannot recommend this series enough if you love a well-written cosy mystery!

Halloween in a British village!🎃

This book has everything you need at this time of year - crisp autumnal air, a cozy British village, lovely candles with the smell of toffee apples, halloween party, past secrets and of course murder.🎃

This is book number 6 in this series and Agatha Frost does not disappoint. Claire Harris is a wonderful amateur sleuth who strives to get her candle making business going. The candles are superb but how to get the customers to find this out for themselves? Claire and her best friend Damon has to put their thinking caps on.

While Claire struggles with her shop her parents old neightbour, Mrs. Beaton is found wondering around outside in her nightgown - she has seen a woman in her garden but is there an easy explanation for this? Of course not - further investigation leads to a dead woman, another dead woman 40 years ago, several suspects, property damage, a secret tunnel and love drama. Can Claire, with the help from her friends and parents - her mother really steps up to the plate in this one - figure everything out before there are more deaths? Enjoy!🎃

I received this book as an ARC reader from the author and I give this honest review voluntarily.

It's October in Northash and Claire is seeing a dip in candle sales and once again sleuthing. When her parent's neighbor Mrs. Beaton is found wandering around the cul-de-sac claiming there is a woman in her backyard her parents put it down to Mrs. Beaton imaging things until they Claire and her dad find a body buried in her backyard! Turns out to be the body of Valerie Skelton with the discovery of a tunnel that leads from the abandoned graveyard in the cul-de-sac to the church things only get more and more puzzling. Can Claire along with her Mom and Dad solve this murder how does a 40+ plus year old murder connect with this present day murder?

I really enjoyed this mystery and I am a sucker for a murder from the past being linked to a present day murder plus there is the mystery of who is Mrs. Beaton really! This was a fun read and I enjoyed the secondary plot of Damon & Sally's romance and issues with her soon to be rotten ex.

I will say I figured out who the killer of the cold case murder was but was unprepared for the who the killer of the present day murder was I was sure it was the same person. I also loved glimpses into Mrs. Beaton and hats off to the author for the growth of her Claire's mother I actually am starting to like Janet!

Who Killed Valerie Skelton ? . . .

Claire Harris, daughter of a retired detective inspector, owns a candle shop yet still can’t stay away from sleuthing if something odd presents itself. This Halloween season she has a new toffee apple candle that is a big hit, even though it would be nice to have more customers to enjoy it.

Then a neighbor, Mrs. Beaton, wandering outside in her nightgown and possibly suffering from dementia, claims that there is a woman in the garden. Claire quickly finds Valerie Skelton’s body buried in a new grave in Mrs. Beaton’s yard! Strangely enough, Valerie’s sister Melanie had been murdered many years earlier in 1977. Coincidence? Or is something strange going on? Can Claire find the murderer with the help of her friends?

I enjoyed reading this cozy mystery which held my interest throughout. I had no idea who the murderer was, so the ending was a surprise. The town is unique and has some quirky characters who are fun to meet. Grab your copy and see if Claire can perhaps solve both murders as she searched for whoever killed Valerie.

Claire Harris loves Halloween and her latest candle creation showcased in her shop is called, “Toffee-Apple.” It’s perfect for autumn.

One evening, while visiting her parents, Claire finds herself assisting her elderly neighbor, Mrs. Beaton who appears to be suffering from Alzheimer’s. When Mrs. Beaton is found wandering the neighborhood in her nightie, she tells Claire there’s a woman in her garden. After a careful search of the garden, Claire stumbles upon a freshly dug grave containing the body of a previous resident of the town, Valerie Skelton. Dark secrets are revealed and the small town of Northash will never be the same.

This was a fabulous mystery! Mrs. Beaton has a story to share as well. Her character also shows growth through the series, and figures into future books. This is one thing that sticks with me about the series. The characters aren’t stagnant. They come across as real people. Bravo to this author!

I have enjoyed every book I've read by Agatha Frost and Toffee Apple Torment is no exception. In this installment of Claire's Candles mysteries, Claire has a couple of murders to solve in Northash. Two sisters-Melanie and Valerie Skelton, died decades apart in the same village with the same group of people close by. The Harris family continues to help their elderly neighbor, Mrs. Beaton, and a couple of romances are going well. I enjoy reading books that have a murder mystery to solve as well as updates about the lives of the main characters. This series has a lot of interesting quirky characters besides Claire-- her parents Alan and Janet, her friends Sally Halliwell, Damon Gilbert, and Ryan Tyler, and Detective Inspector Harry Ramsbottom. The author makes it so easy to imagine them and once you finish a book, you can't wait to read the next one.

This is a such a wonderful series! I skipped a few because this was a fall related book but it was fine!

Claire is a feisty young woman who is living her dream making her own candles for her candle shop! This series is set in a small village in England and I love everything about it!

In this book a body is discovered next door to Claire’s parents house in the garden of their elderly neighbor. It just so happens that 40 years earlier the victims sister had a fatal accident and Claire finds that coincidence too hard to swallow. Claire and her retired Police Chief Dad try and piece together what is happening in their quaint little village!

This is book 6 and book 7 a Christmas themed book is soon to be released. Highly recommend this series

This is a really good mystery. Everyone thinks Claire's elderly neighbor is crazy when she says she saw a body in her garden, but soon they find out she is not mistaken. Claire works to find out who killed the woman and there is a twist as the deceased is the sister of a woman who died many years ago. In the end, Claire discovers the truth. The story is very well written and the characters are quite detailed. I was surprised to find out who was involved in the murders.
