Nothing Serious

Rate this book
A blisteringly sharp novel of self-acceptance, friendship and making connections in the most unexpected of places . . .

Nicki - 30ish, care worker, living in Brighton - is scrolling for her next hook-up. A difficult home life, a job that's going nowhere, she seeks solace in random encounters.

Amber - 17, college student, lost - desperately needs someone to notice her.

She creates 'Kevin', a fake dating profile for a man in his thirties.

Neither Nicki nor 'Kevin' has any idea what they're about to get into.

They quickly match, and an unlikely friendship develops, giving each other the validation they both sorely need.

But can you ever truly connect when one of you is a liar?

Wow. This book blew me away. I’m still reeling from it. I had to process it before writing this review. Grab a cuppa and the chocolate as it’s a long one!

I wrote this review in 2023. It’s now May 2025 and I’m halfway through Emma Medrano’s soon to be published new novel Venus Fly Trap which is also bloody brilliant and I recalled I’d love this also!

Please note there are Trigger Topics in this book and are lightly touched on in this review.

Nicki is in her 30’s, Amber is 17, turning 18. At first it seems they have nothing in common but they really do.

Loneliness
Pain
Self-Hatred
Shame
Wounds

The desperate need to be loved, accepted, heard and special to someone. To hope.

I was looking at the low rated reviews for this book on NetGalley and Goodreads and I have to say that some readers are not getting this book. Perhaps going into it with the wrong expectations. It’s not a light romance or fluffy fun, it’s not funny and it deals with very realistic and raw topics. It is brilliantly executed. I am incredibly impressed with this Author.

The sheer emotion that pours out of this book is phenomenal. I read this in one go and was absolutely fixated.

So, yes there are difficult themes in this book, unpleasant things and the Author does not hold back in the portrayal of the suffering of these two incredible characters. Nicki works as a care worker and is locked into an abusive codependent relationship. Like the cycle of violence she forgives and hopes her boyfriend will change. She’s filled with shame from childhood and further abuse as an adult. Her escape is into Tinder. She feels utterly worthless and acts out to reinforce her hatred for herself. She is a brilliant character. I was desperate to see her world turn around.

Amber lives with a Mother (doesn’t deserve that title) who is emotionally and verbally abusive. I despised her Mother deeply. Just heartbreaking how Amber is treated. As a teenager Amber doesn’t feel pretty or skinny like the other girls. She is desperate for kind words from her messed up critical Mother. She is on the outside looking in on her peers and is full of pain and loneliness. She slides into dangerous territory that impacts her body and mind. I wanted to hug her and tell her she was special and beautiful over and over.

Her friends decide to create a fake profile on Tinder to catfish women, enter stage left “Kevin”. She’s desperately trying to get approval from other girls but when their interest in catfishing fades she carries on. This is where it gets exceptionally good. This is such a great plot. It shines a light on how online relationships and the desperation to be special to someone, anyone can be played out from your phone, iPad, computer. A place where lonely people seek solace especially when they can’t face being “seen”. But what if your connection is built on lies?

Just wow. I can’t even really get my impressions across here. It’s so exceptionally done. I can honestly say it’s one of the best books I’ve read this year. I really feel that other reviewers who have put low rating reviews on NetGalley didn’t get this at all.

It is a sad read with themes like abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders and domestic violence BUT not all books are light and fluffy and this isn’t trying to be. I thought it may be too much but I was fine reading it despite some themes being all too familiar. I just “got” this book.

We hear from both women, each voice alternating and distinct. “Kevin” has weaved a huge web of lies but what to do when you realise you really care for the person you are lying to? This book barrels to a conclusion you’d not see coming from a mile away. I loved the ending and felt it did both characters justice.

This is a powerful novel that will bring out a world of emotions in you. Every single thing in here is realistic and every hard topic covered is raw and powerful. If you want fluffy then this isn’t for you. If you want something different that digs deep I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you cheer for the underdog in books you will love this.

The dialogue of both characters is very realistic and the Author has skilfully pulled off the difference in ages in both speech and behaviour. That’s not easy to do. When we are in Amber’s world of teenage struggles, school drama, peer pressure, sexuality and feeling she doesn’t belong it’s extremely realistic. When we switch to Nicki’s world it’s completely different. Yet also they are the same in a different way (I know that doesn’t make sense).

My heart broke over and over for both women. So many complex and painful issues impact both women. This is a book about real life and real loneliness. How the desperate need for connection and acceptance can drive people to do things they’d never thought they would do.

The peripheral characters are well written also. Trust me, you will really hate some characters. There are also some characters I loved. It’s really a very unique read. I don’t think I can do it justice in this review. As I’ve said it seems other reviewers have gone into reading this expecting something light and I nearly didn’t get this book based on other reviews but I am so glad I ignored them. It’s such a powerful book.

The Author mentions in her acknowledgments at the end of the book those that got her through dark times in her life and whilst I don’t know what I am pretty sure she has experienced deep pain. To write like this, to put so much emotion in you’ve definitely had some difficult life experiences yourself (in my opinion).

Both lives crash together on an App and both lives will never be the same again. There certainly are very difficult scenes and themes and all of it is occurs (sadly) in the real world outside of this book. I didn’t balk at all with any of it.

I am so glad I decided to read this ARC and hope my review may help others understand why some low rated reviews have been written. Once you know it tackles with difficult, themes then you’ll know if it’s right for you. A book I won’t ever forget reading.

5 solid stars from me. Emma Medrano is an Author to watch and I’d read anything she writes in a heartbeat. I literally could not put this book down. Just brilliant. That ending! She has been writing since a child and this is one heck of a debut novel!

A huge thanks to Michael Joseph Random House, Penguin for my ARC via NetGalley (one of my favourite publishers, so many great books).

This is a very well written book and I enjoyed it, finding myself eager to learn the fates of Nicki and Amber. The disordered eating and body dysmorphia storyline I found to be very accurate and emotive. Amber's mother is pure evil and her treatment of Amber is awful. Ultimately, this is a book about loneliness and finding meaningful connections, which can resonate with everyone. Nicki and Amber were very similar and it would have been nice to have greater differentiation between the characters. At times it felt like they were the same person. I thought the book read like a YA although from what I've seen it's not being marketed as such. I think it's an honest and raw exploration of issues that unfortunately affect a lot of young adults. I really, really disliked the ending. I didn't enjoy how wide open it was left. I think the reader deserved more resolution. It closed with a lot of unanswered questions. But, all in all, a good, enjoyable book.

I did like this book. It felt very traumatic and sad, but the ending was just the beginning for these two amazing characters - hopefully!

This was extreme, but perhaps a reminder for us all to get rid of terrible people who just bring you down. If someone in your life does not lift you up; make you feel better; make you smile - then they are not worth it; you deserve better.

I understand the concept and it is an easy read. It’s very sad yet inspiring. However it left me lost at times the little ‘Kevin’ and nickie spoke isn’t as much as I thought which made me question there connection. The end is also rubbish!!! But the messages in this book are gorgeous.

Plot/compellingness 3/5 - I didn't feel desperate to pick the book up but once I did it rumbled along nicely
Themes 3/5 - interesting themes but somehow it didn't quite go deep enough
Characters 3/5
Emotional resonance 3/5
Writing style 4/5

One thing I really liked about the book was that Nicki and her partner were a carer and a removal man respectively. It was really refreshing to read a book where the characters weren't all working in corporate/media office jobs!

There were a few things that didn't quite make sense and which I was surprised weren't picked up in the editing process (minor spoilers follow)
- a 90s-esque answering machine is referred to as a "voicemail", even by it's elderly owner. This could be a regional thing but I've never heard people refer to an old school machine in this way
- there is reference to someone needing a "scholarship" to attend a particular university. This isn't something I've ever heard of in the UK
- likewise one of the characters is taking "Advanced English" in a 6th form in England. This isn't a thing I've ever heard of - I thought people just did A Levels in 3 or 4 subjects?
- Nicki talks about how she could never afford a detached 3 bedroom house in Hove because it's £200k. Did the author do no research at all on this?! That's what you'd pay to live in a house like that in my small Scottish town, in Hove you'd be looking at something nearer a million! Nicki and her partner are apparently often on Zoopla, but it doesn't seem like the author was
(I know these are very minor points but they made the novel feel less believable for me)

This is my last read of 2023 and let me tell you, this is a book that everyone needs to read in 2024.

What a story.

Filled with many hard-hitting topics including mental and physical abuse, eating disorders and bullying.

Emma does a fantastic job of covering such emotional subjects.

Told from two points of view, we meet both Amber, a teenager, who is in the midst of deciding what to do after school and Nicki, a 30 something year old woman, who is in desperate need of a change in life direction.

Both are lonely, both are emotionally confused.

Could an chance 'meeting' be just what they need to truly break free of the current lives and finally make some choices that are purely for them?

I really loved the exploration from the author on how connections are made with other people, the reasons behind those connections and just how far we as humans are willing to go to keep those connections whether they are a healthy choice or not.

My heart broke for both characters.

Flawed but deserving of love and so much more.

I wanted to tell them that better days were waiting for them.

It's hard to believe that this is a debut novel because the words are written with such poise, it's honest and fearless.

A novel that I won't be forgetting for quite some time.

Firstly, a massive thank you to @michaeljbooks for reaching out to me last year & offering to send me a proof copy of this sensational book! I'm very grateful 🤭

My first read of 2024 & its set the bar pretty damn high! This book is dark, deep and so thought-provoking!

I was hooked from the very first line and I struggled to put it down the majority of the time after (damn you sleep)!
This book felt so real and raw and tense.
The characters within these pages felt so real, and I got so passionate during certain situations! Ambers mom especially omg I've never despised a character so much, I was yelling at the book some nights🤭😂😂

Nothing Serious is a heartbreaking and complicated story that makes you realise how truly ugly some people can be. It also shows us how the most unlikely connections can help us in ways we dont always understand. I dont remember the last time I felt so many strong emotions while reading a book.

This is also a debut novel which I really struggle to believe because the writing is just outstanding!

This story will stick with me for a long, long time. If you're a fan of Holly Bourne then you will love this! Absolutely breathtaking 👏🏻

Let me try to do this novel justice; I expect I won't quite manage it. To start, I can't recommend it enough.

The most impressive, skillful, and powerful part of Nothing Serious is the piercing clarity and accuracy with which emotions and sensations are depicted and described. As you read it, you come to understand loneliness, desperation, and isolation on a whole new level; alternatively, if you've had similar experiences, you see them illustrated with unbelievable, loving, painful attention to detail. If there's one thing the author does masterfully, it's this: She leaves you no doubt that she understands every character she's created, through and through.

Besides that, Nothing Serious also inserts and builds tension with surgical precision. This book contains abuse. A lot of it. Even so, as a reader, you're never quite sure when and how to expect it. There's an awful, horrible quiet that settles over the pages as you anticipate something happening; that turns into rising dread when you realize that an abusive character has been building up to something the whole scene, under the surface, and you're forced to watch the inevitable ensue. The novel captures and delivers for readers the horrible anxiety of living with an abusive loved one, and it does so tactfully and seriously.

On top of that, the plot does not drag at any point. Every scene offers something exciting or captivating. I won't spoil anything about the ending, but just...be prepared. Even though you can't be.

To offer a balanced perspective:

You may find yourself frustrated very often with the protagonists; they make frustrating decisions, as many people in bad situations do. While that's not a flaw of the work itself, it can affect the reader's experience for some.

I do also take issue with some of the side characters, who lack the incredible nuance of the major characters. Specifically, some of the side characters in Amber's story feel like means to an end as opposed to full individuals. They're only fleshed out insofar as it relates to Amber, which makes sense for a first person POV, but still makes them seem less real than their major counterparts.

TL;DR: Nothing Serious hits like a nuke in terms of depicting emotion and building tension throughout its riveting plot, even if it doesn't flesh out every single character or spare you the frustration of watching people destroy themselves. I can't recommend it enough.

The story of two women, living totally different lives but faced with the reality of being lonely and pressures of daily life in a modern world. They connect online but not how you would think! Heartbreaking as an outsider to read. The end had me so on edge! I hope there is more to come for Nikki and Amber. But superb read 👌🏻 So glad I picked this up randomly from my local library.

3.5*

“I should be lucky that he wants me, that anyone does. God knows he wouldn’t once he got to know me.”

Nicki, who has never recovered from childhood abuse, is now in an abusive relationship with Tom.

Amber, on the ascent of womanhood, is struggling with her body image, helped not one bit by a mother who’s determined that her daughter won’t face the same overweight adulthood that she did.

Two people, each traumatised in their own way by their parental influences, come together in the most unexpected way, and show both the power and the danger of human connection via online relationships.

The book addresses serious and devastating topics with candour and sensitivity. It doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of living with mental illness, trauma or violence. It’s not a fun read, nor an easy one, but I found it impossible not to become invested in Nicki and Amber and their fates.

That said, I felt it could have been a little shorter, and the writing and tone was more suited to a New Adult audience. If I’d read it at 18, I think I’d be giving it 5*

The way I got hooked on this book, despite it being a bit of a tough read with all the heavy stuff going on in these women's lives, really says something. I wasn’t expecting to dive into such a deep pool of trauma m, but there I was, totally absorbed and left with my mind buzzing with questions about Nicki and Amber.

It makes you think about the messy, complicated stuff people go through and how the online world can twist things up even more. It's not just a page-turner; it's the kind of book that sticks with you, makes you look at things a bit differently.

Where do I start with this book? I adored this book. It dealt with some really complicated issues that were so heart wrenching but it was done in the right way.

This story had me hooked from the beginning and left me needing to know what happened next. It took me a bit longer to read as it was very emotional at times but I made it through.

I would urge anyone who can to read this as it is so interesting and definitely serious.

This was a lot darker than I was expecting it to be. The acknowledgements mention that this is a book about loneliness and it goes deep into that throughout the course of the story. I found it quite hard to read at times. It deals with some topics that made me consider putting it down. That said, I'm glad I finished it. The conversations between Nicki and Amber is what kept me interested here. Despite the lies and differing experiences, they really lean on each other. The book deals with its subject matter well but it's taking on a lot of heartache. I did come out of it feeling every bit of what these women went through. The end is quite the interesting choice - I'll look forward to talking about that with people. One that will stick with me for a while.

This one hit me hard.

Nothing Serious alternates between two points of view - Nicki, a thirty-something year old woman, and Amber - who is just on the brink of adulthood as she approaches her eighteenth birthday. These courageous, brave, phenomenal women, although fictional, will stay with me for a very long time. I fell in love with them both. Both of them also completely broke my heart.

Nicki lives with her boyfriend Tom - it is an abusive relationship. Nicki is also addicted to sleeping with men she meets on Tinder. She has a lot of mental health issues mostly stemming for her traumatic childhood and past experiences. Her self worth is practically non existent and her views of herself absolutely broke me.

Amber lives with her Mum. Her Mum is the most awful person in the world and I felt like screaming at the pages. Amber believes herself to be fat and her Mum massively feeds into this belief, and practically starves her. The two things that these women have in common is that they are both lonely. So when Amber makes a fake Tinder profile for a man called ‘Kevin’, matching with Nicki changes both of their lives in a massive way.

I was blown away by this book. It is a raw and honest look at human behaviour and just how far people will go to escape the feeling of loneliness. Fantastically written, incredibly powerful, emotionally intelligent, just outstanding…I will never forget Nicki and Amber.

Thank you, Micheal Joseph Publishing and NetGalley, for a gifted copy of this book, which is available now!

The book titled 'Nothing Serious' is a powerful and moving story that delves into the themes of loneliness and the need for companionship. The title is ironic, as the story is anything but shallow or superficial. The plot is multifaceted, making it an ideal read for book clubs. However, readers should be aware that the book deals with sensitive subjects, such as mental health issues, abuse, and domestic violence. Therefore, it is advisable to research these topics fully before reading the book.

The book's two main characters, Nikki and Amber, are complex and multilayered, making them intriguing, realistic and relatable to many readers.

The story is told through multiple points of view, which provides a deeper understanding of the characters' thoughts, feelings, and motivations. The author does an excellent job of creating a rich, immersive world that draws the reader in and keeps them engaged throughout the book.

Overall, I found 'Nothing Serious' to be a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant read. While the content can sometimes be heavy, the author handles it with sensitivity and compassion. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys character-driven stories that explore complex themes and issues.

This book was certainly not what I expected. It was so much darker than I realised, and it definitely hit me quite deeply. I felt completely and utterly hopeless at times because it just felt like the characters needed so much support, and their lives were so bleak.

I really wanted to give Amber's mum a good shake, and I wanted to make her talk to her friend more. I also wanted to tell Nicki that she didn't "deserve" what happened and get her to seek more support once she had taken her first steps.
This felt very frustrating as I could tell that these issues wouldn't be resolved to my satisfaction.

There is a "journey" of sort for both characters, but I felt that the older character, Nicki, made more progress than Amber, our 17/18 year old. I don't even know how I feel about the ending...
I kind of feel like I want more from these characters - it feels like the beginning of a long journey for both.

I've seen some reviews suggesting it could be YA, but there is some explicit sexual content and some mature themes (e.g. abuse) that are handled in a less than "clean" way, so it's definitely more adult.

The author has done a great job of bringing these characters to life, and their problems feel so very real. I'm intrigued to see what else this author offers in the future.

This is a dark exploration of loneliness, featuring thirty-something Nicki and 17-yr-old Amber.

Nicki is in an abusive relationship, with an abusive past, seeking relief of a sort in one-night stands found on Tinder.

Amber is a lone teen who is struggling with her mum's bodyshaming and her friendship groups. She sets up a profile of a man designed to catfish on Tinder - 'Kevin'. And eventually Nicki and Kevin start talking...

This is an interesting book, in part because I can't quite tell who it's marketed at. I think it will be a challenging read for a lot of people as it doesn't sit in an easy box.

When I first start reading this, I had a moment of regret over picking it up - it's just so dark and depressing. But I'm glad I stuck with it. Yes, it covers some difficult topics, but they're well-handled and you do really feel for the characters.

The ending is open-ended in a way that I think will frustrate many people. But it also shows growth from Nicki and Amanda, so it satisfied me (mostly).

Thank you NetGalley & Penguin Publishing for this ARC.

Please check TW as this book does deal with DV.

The ending of this book actually had me saying 'what' & 'no way is that the ending'!

The story focuses on Nicki a mid 30-woman who works as a care assistant but has such a horrible past from early childhood right through until now all at the hands of people who were supposed love and help her, and Amber a 17-year-old student who feels completely lost with an unsupportive home life.

Their paths cross online when Amber creates a profile on a dating app pretending to be her teacher in order to try and impress her 'friends' however once the novelty in the group ends, Amber keeps speaking with Nicki and they end up forming a friendship.

This book dealt with so many emotions and at times i wanted to either scream at these 2 or give them a big hug.

A heavy book, around complex situations and emotions such as eating disorders, toxic relationships, sexuality and abuse. It was written really well and the author seemed to have done her research. Even though the subjects were heavy, it was a page turner that couldn’t put down. I was very disheartened at the beginning due to one of main protagonist’s Amber’s cruel behaviour, but was hoping that the two protagonists (Nikki and Amber) would come together to help each other in some way, which they did. I only didn’t give it 5 stars as I found the ending disappointing as it wasn’t really conclusive and just left you hanging with not really a closing chapter for Nikki and Amber

Picked this up on impulse and finished it within three days. Considering the cover, the title and how it's described as "achingly hopeful" on the front, I expected a light read and it was anything but. The writing is brilliant and I couldn't wait to see how things would develop, but it's heavy, bleak and dark.

It doesn't shy away from the rawest consequences of trauma and abuse, the cycles it creates. Many people slip through the cracks and go unseen. Not everyone can "be saved", not every "conclusion" is a happy one, some stories don't have a saviour but they still need to be told.

I enjoyed the premise of this book and it was an enjoyable read but I did feel like it was maybe better suited to a young adult audience as the writing style was a little too basic for me at times. I also felt like some quite sensitive issues were a kind of skirted around without being fully dealt with or resolved.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

Despite the title, the themes explored in this novel were certainly serious and made for difficult reading at times.

Whilst the premise of the story sounded intriguing, Nicki and Amber’s individual stories were so heavy and I found it wasn’t an enjoyable read like I had anticipated.

Although I can appreciate the writers approach to these difficult topics, I unfortunately didn’t enjoy this novel.

i loved it and was hooked from the beginning
it was incredibly sad and comforting to read about such deep topics and how lonely life can be
thoughts that you have when you are very insecure but also things that are so relatable to have thought about

very easy read

the end had me shocked and stressed but its beautiful in a way thinking of new beginnings for both women in different age groups

just very comforting

I got hooked on this story since chapter one. The writing is almost hypnotic, the characters are intense and whole-hearted, and the ending hit me like a slap, in the best of senses. The narration is often suffocating and it's hard to put the book down. Overall, I highly recommend it, but with caution: please avoid it if you struggle with negative perceptions of yourself. These characters are constantly enrolling in negative self-talking, to the point of self-hatred and it can be overwhelming.
