Trauma therapist Kaley Colbert needs a vacation from her job, and a ski trip with her church singles' group seems like the perfect way to unplug. But while in the mountains, she learns that her last client was murdered hours after their meeting, and she wonders if the notes she's receiving from a possible stalker hold a more sinister warning.
On the trip, ex-boyfriend and entrepreneur Reef Mitchell wants to give their relationship another chance, but Kaley questions if his past and priorities could ever mesh with her life. When her client's underworld connections catch up with her, she has no choice but trust Reef to help her stay alive, solve her client's mystery, and bring the killers to justice.

Getting to write this story was so special, because the setting of Beech Mountain, North Carolina is part of my own story. While my husband James and I were dating, our church group planned a ski trip to Beech Mountain, much like the one Reef and Kaley embark on. Born and raised in Florida, I had never seen fresh snow fall, let alone attempt to ski in it. Writing Kaley’s frustration with the learning curve is something I came by honestly.
James taught the other new skiers and me the basics, and I felt so special to be his girlfriend and have such a thoughtful date. Later, when my writing imagination kicked in, I began to wonder, “What if James and I hadn’t been dating but had broken up? How awkward would that experience have been?” Awkward on steroids. Then the suspense lover in me began to spin the story of Kaley and Reef as well as a celebrity villain that no one would suspect. And so, this story was born.
A gripping suspense story with snowy mountains, second-chance romance, and the Florida mob underworld—this one is a page-turner! When Trauma therapist Kaley Colbert takes a much-needed ski-ing vacation with her church singles’ group, she discovers the last client she saw before leaving, has been murdered. Her ex-boyfriend, Reef Mitchell, is also on the trip and desperately wants to give their relationship another attempt. As Kaley's safety is compromised and her late client's mob connections come looking for answers, she needs to trust that God—and Reef—will find a way to rescue her in time. With engaging characters, beautiful settings, and a strong thread of hope woven throughout, this is a wonderful debut novel in this particular genre for Kristen. Bravo! I received a complimentary copy from Mountain Brook Ink through Interviews & Reviews. All opinions expressed are my own.
Kaley, a trauma counselor goes to Beech Mountain on a trip with a group from her church. Unknown to her, Reef, her ex-boyfriend is among them. Feeling guilt from the breakup, she wasn't looking forward to seeing him again.
The storyline takes a twist when she fills in at the trauma center for her boss. The client, with accusations of fear from the mob, has Kaley wondering about his sanity. The story encompasses murder, kidnapping and human trafficking but each is handled well. There is plenty of tense moments and some that seem hopeless, but the author makes trust in the Lord shine through.
This is one of the best woven Christian suspense tales I've read in a long time. Great characters that show faith, courage, and determination. Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from the author and voluntarily choose to review it.
This book has it all! Mystery, murder, suspense, love and trust in God. Kaley, the main character, is a strong woman whose trust in God and man is put to the test. A relaxing ski trip turns into more than Kaley could ever imagine. Kaley decides to relax and go on a ski trip with a church group. It turns out her ex boyfriend Reef is also going. Reef wants to give their relationship another chance but Kaley is hesitant. Meanwhile everywhere she goes she feels as if she's being watched. She finds out from her boss that her client has been murdered and she soon starts receiving threatening notes. Kaley must trust Reef in order to stay alive and bring the killers to justice. She must also trust in God and believe: "...God knew and saw her, His child. Her identity as his daughter was secure and He would always be her faithful Father."
This compelling winter novel started out more like a romance or rom com, but the suspense soon kicked in during the church singles’ ski trip. I’ve never been on a ski trip, but it seemed quite authentic to me. Is Kaley Colbert being stalked or could she possibly be in danger because of her deceased former client? And her former boyfriend, Reef Mitchell, wants to rekindle their relationship, which adds to the intriguing mix. The pace kicks up and the tension rises as events unfold and the excitement increases. The plot becomes intense and keeps readers engaged as they hasten through the pages to learn how it will all turn out. The varied characters each come across as realistic with their own personality quirks and their individual issues. We see how they work to get along or get by and see the consequences of their choices. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Take My Hand by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell is the first book in what I hope becomes a new series. Kaley Colbert is about to go on vacation with her singles group at church. She needs this break from work as a trauma counselor/therapist. One week away with her only worry being that she will be with Reef Mitchell her ex. Talk about awkward! At the last minute, she sees a patient as a courtesy to her co-worker/boss as he has already left for the day. This starts off a roller coaster that Kaley can only pray she survives and maybe tell Reef how she truly feels about him.
The story starts off with Kaley only have to worry about being around her ex, but it builds into a suspense that keeps you up at night until you are finished. I liked the setting. I love mountains and snow. It was such a delight reading about how Kaley was enjoying sledding and just letting go and having fun. Then it shifts and she ends up kidnapped and fighting for her life. During Kaley’s kidnapping and Reef’s frantic fight to find her, they both trust the Lord and it really showed how they could trust, love him, and praise him despite all the problems they faced. I love Christian suspense and this one is no exception. It picked up at the end & I couldn’t put it down. I had to see how it would all pan out. Plus we get an epilogue sort of. I am hopeful that we can find out how Kaley and Reef’s story ends. If you like clean Christian romantic suspense then I think you’ll enjoy Take My Hand. I was given a copy, but all opinions are my very own!
I have been wanting to read this book since it's release and finally had the chance to while on vacation. A church's singles group heads to the mountains for a ski trip and fellowship together, but danger lurks around the corner for one of their group members. Kaley and Reef's relationship story goes from exes to the possibility of something more. Before they can explore that path, Kaley's theapy connection to a patient gets her kidnapped by the mob. Reef sets out to find her, and bring her back.
I really enjoyed this book as it had humor, suspense, and hope. I can already see doors opening for other members of the group to get their own stories and look forward to reading more in this series.
I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. Parnell knows how to keep a reader turning pages. The suspense amped up in the second part of the book and didn’t let go. I found the characters to be frustratingly believable and I look forward to reading more of their adventures and love stories!
You can’t control what happens to you, but you can choose how you respond to it - Victor Frankl
She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. As a crisis counselor Kaley was used to clients looking at her questioning her responses, but this feeling was different. Out on the ski hill, who could possibly be watching her - other than that she had never done this before and had a huge learning curve before her. Getting away for the weekend had sounded like such a good idea…..
What follows is plenty of danger, kidnapping and even murder. Expect to read this in one sitting as you will not be able to set it aside until you know if she will come out of this alive. The consequences from choices made by other people are now affecting her life. How will she respond? Can she leave the outcome to God and trust those who are helping her?
An early copy of Crossroads Suspense Book One was received through Mountain Brook Ink. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
Trauma therapist, Kaley Colbert, doubts the mob’s existence until she becomes their target after one of her clients is murdered. “Take My Hand” offers suspense with every page as Kaley and her ex-boyfriend, Reef try to solve the mystery of Casale’s death and avoid becoming another casualty. The twists and turns in the plot kept me reading to the end. If you’re looking for a clean romantic suspense, this is the book for you.
From the first sentence, Kristen had me on the edge of my seat. It was packed with mystery and suspense that made for many late nights. The characters were very believable and I love how the author weaved their faith into the story.
I received a copy of this book as part of the launch team in return for a review.
I really liked this story. The characters are real and all have their own problems. The arc of Kaley and Reef, their relationship and her trouble with the mafia, makes for a great story. As the book went on the story just got better.
This has been a fun book to read with a mixture of suspense, faith and a little romance. Finally Kaley is taking a well deserved vacation. She is joining her church group to go skiing. It sounds like a lot of fun except for one tiny problem. Her ex-boyfriend will be on the trip as well. Little does she know that Reef will not be the problem on this trip.
Reef is excited to go skiing and hopes at some time to maybe be able to clear the air with Kaley. You can sense that he still has feelings for her so he needs to try his best to make amends so they can both enjoy the trip. I like how Reef doesn’t pressure Kaley at all and is a real gentleman around her.
Someone thinks Kaley is hiding information and is willing to do anything to get it. What was suppose to be a nice time with friends turn into danger as Kaley turns up missing. Reef is sure that something strange is going on and gets the others involved to help find her. I loved the suspense and how the group stepped up to find Kaley.
Kaley’s job may have put her in danger when she meets someone else’s client right before she leaves for vacation. What did this person tell Kaley that has put her on the radar with the mob? Why does a famous person who just won an Oscar kidnap Kaley her and fly her back to Florida? The author had me on the edge of my seat as the twists and surprises kept me guessing as what was to come next.
The story has a great message of faith and trusting Him when you are in trouble. The ending is adrenaline charged and full of surprises. I am hoping that the author is planning another book to follow up on these characters.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Take My Hand is suspense story that is written by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell. This is the first book that I’ve read by this author and it will not be the last. The book will draw you in within the first few pages and you will not want to put it down.
Trauma therapist Kaley Colbert needs a vacation from her job. So she goes on a singles trip with her church. Skiing and unplugging from reality sounds like a great way to unwind. When she gets there she runs into her ex boyfriend Reef Mitchell. She has guilt from the break up and he wants to give their relationship a chance.
Kaley finds out that one of her clients were murdered hours after they had met. She’s wondering if notes she’s been receiving mean something darker awakes her.
This book has a little bit of everything. Action. Suspense. Mystery. Romance. The characters are well written and the story flows nicely.
This book does touch on the mob and human trafficking. However the author makes sure the love of Christ shines through
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Travel from Tampa, Florida’s coast to the snow laden hills of Beech Mountain, North Carolina in this brand new romantic suspense novel from Kristen Hogrefe Parnell, book 1 in her Crossroads Suspense series. When Kaley goes missing, can Reef find her in time?!
HIGHLIGHTS: Second Chance At Love · Two Exciting Locations · Faith-Based Suspense · The Underground Mafia · Pirates and Boat Parades · Explosion, Murder and Abduction
MY THOUGHTS: This is the first novel I’ve read by author Kristen Hogrefe Parnell. The first two thirds of the book was a struggle for me to get through, but the plot sounded interesting so I wanted to see it through, plus I was really enjoying the setting. Parnell begins her story in the warm coastal weather of Tampa, FL then immerses readers in the snowy hills of Beech Mountain, NC. Being personally familiar with both locations, I felt the excitement of the group getting to ski for the first time and entertained some of my own FL girl nostalgia of visiting the resort area on Beech Mtn.
I did not find the main character, Kaley, to be reliable or relatable as a 30-something career professional. I found myself questioning her decisions and reasoning a handful of times. Likewise, a handful of the secondary characters fell flat to me and read more as teenagers versus single professionals. When I wanted to give up on the story, Reef, however, captured my attention and he ultimately won me over, spurring me to continue. I really enjoyed his perseverance and heroism near the end of the story.
I love a good second chance at love story and this novel fell into that trope, but in my opinion, it lacked chemistry. I was hoping for more flirting and maybe a great kissing scene at the end. The tension was there, which I enjoyed, but the reason for the tension was surface level and didn’t have a mature foundation.
The suspense portion of Take My Hand didn’t grab my attention in the beginning. I did, however, really enjoy the exciting climax near the end as it took place during an annual event in the Tampa area, the Gasparilla Pirate Invasion, a boat parade. This proved to be the perfect place to stage some thrilling scenes that grabbed my interest and spiked the level of intensity and suspense in this story.
This novel is listed as faith-based and a good portion of the plot centers around a church group’s ski trip, however, the elements of faith in this story felt shallow at best. I would have loved to see a deeper, more personal relationship with God grow in the characters or see them seek His guidance and wisdom in their situations.
SUMMARY: Definite points to Take My Hand for Reef’s strong, heroic character, the Eastern U.S. settings and the thrilling excitement at the end of the novel! If you’re a reader who enjoys mild suspense, a light mystery and hint of romance, you may love this story. This novel may also appeal to YA readers who are looking for clean fiction.
Content or Trigger Warnings: None

I have really come to enjoy Romantic Suspense novels in the past couple of years. Take My Hand by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell is the latest book in this genre that I have read and enjoyed!
Kaley Colbert has a very tough and demanding job and has decided to take a vacation. Her Church has a Singles Group and she is currently on a Ski Trip with the Group. She is devasted, while on the trip when she receives news that her client was murdered just a few hours after their last appointment together. Kaley has been receiving some upsetting letters from a stalker and now she wonders if the murder and her stalker are connected. Reef Mitchell, Kaley's Ex-Boyfriend, is also on the trip and he mentions to Kaley that he would like to rekindle their relationship. Kaley is unsure if she wants to rekindle the relationship because their lives are on 2 different paths. Kaley soon realizes that she really does need Reef to help her navigate the letters she is receiving, solve her friend's murder and hopefully capture the criminals. Will Kaley and Reef solve the mysterious things that are happening around them? Will there be a Second Chance at Romance between the pair?
I was captivated by the storyline from the very beginning. Kaley seems to be a woman who has a lot on her plate for both her personal and work life. I LOVE how she knows her limits and decides to take a Vacation with her Church Singles Group. Reef seems like an outstanding man who really cares for Kaley and tries to make the trip as less awkward as possible. I LOVE how he approaches the fact that he would like a Second Chance at Romance. Kaley does let her guard down and trusts Reef when she is put in danger. The book is packed full of Action, Romance, Mystery, and Faith. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Romantic Suspense Novels! GREAT BOOK!
Wow! Kristen Hogrefe Parnell certainly delivers on both the Romantic and the Suspense in Take My Hand. This is a second chance story between Kaley and Reef (interesting backstory on his name!) during their Christian group's ski trip. She works as a therapist, and her last client before she goes on her much-needed vacation ends up having much deeper, serious ties to the mafia than anyone thought. Of course, this snowballs into a whole chase that had me holding my breath and making time to keep listening and to know how it'd continue. There are so many plot twists that kept me hooked to the story and that I know fellow lovers of the Suspense genre will appreciate. The clues, the suspense, and the action were all done extremely well and I really enjoyed this ride! But as I said, the author also delivers on the romance, and Reef is the ultimate hero with how sweet, patient, and caring he is. However, the fact that they both had things to work on (from their pasts or presents, or even trusting the Lord with the future) added a deeper layer to the story and made the characters feel real. The side characters were also great, and some friendships were even #goals and I wish I could hang out with them. Now I'm wanting for some of them to have their own story (like Olivia, Sam, Avery, etc.)
The narrator was great and I loved that she gave each character a different voice, bringing the story to life. She nailed pretty much all of the nuances (from panic and anger to worry and tenderness, to name a few.) I'm glad I got to experience this story in audio format since it added another dimension to the story.
Overall, a great Christian Romantic Suspense that features both the snowy mountains and the beach, and that will have you flipping the pages as fast as you can. Can't wait for Liam's story! ~ 5 stars
This is an enjoyable inspirational romantic suspense. The romance is interesting as it is a tension filled reuniting of two people who had previously been a couple. That allowed for the reigniting of feelings during danger. I felt the characters were developed pretty well. Kaley is too nice, not suspecting a devious woman and that gets her into trouble. Reef is a nice guy and I felt as frustrated as he did when his rescue efforts were hampered by law enforcement. It might be a little unrealistic that Reef had more success than professionals but it made for a good story.
I liked the settings of Florida and then a snow skiing area. As a PNW person, it was fun to read of Floridians experiencing snow and learning to ski. It was also interesting to read about the boating event in Tampa, something I had not heard about. Parnell's writing style is good making this novel an easy read.
This is a good romantic suspense with a strong faith message for young career age readers. It seems like this might just be the beginning of adventures for Kaley so I will be looking for more from Parnell.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
A ski trip with a church singles group sets the stage for Take My Hand by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell. This work of Christian suspense centers around trauma therapist Kaley Colbert and her ex-boyfriend, entrepreneur Reef Mitchell. She broke things off with him, but he sees this trip as a chance to get back together.
While on the trip, she learns that her last client was murdered hours after meeting with her. When danger begins to surround her, she finds herself forced to rely on Reef to help her and keep her safe. With an undercover cop, an apparently jealous woman, a star with secrets of her own, and more, this book kept me interested.
I loved how the author developed the plot and the characters. The book includes the right amount of suspense to keep things interesting. The back drop of Beech Mountain in North Carolina also provides the perfect setting for Kaley and Reef to rebuild their relationship. Add in Tampa, Florida as an additional setting and those who love the beach will find their perfect setting as well.
So if you enjoy Christian suspense novels, check out this book for yourself. I definitely recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
This is book one in a series. I love reading series in order so I was glad to get to start with this one! As a nurse, I loved the idea of a trauma therapist. Add in some mystery when a client dies right after a session. Oh and to that add some suspense and threats. It just kept getting better and better. I could not stop reading.
Oh and this is a Christian novel and you’ll know that throughout.
There are some issues in the book that you might want to be aware of like kidnapping and murder and human trafficking but also they’re handled really well and are woven seamlessly into the storyline. Oh and the mob too.
I’ve never been skiing though so that bit of the novel was foreign to me. I can’t wait for the next book in the series! And the next, and the next, etc.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
"Take My Hand" by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat kind of story. This Christian Romantic Suspense did not disappoint. Trauma Therapist Kaley Colbert finds herself in the middle of a mess when she fills in for her boss and holds an emergency counseling session with someone who ends up dead. As the last one to speak with this murdered client, Kaley is in neck-deep trouble. But she doesn’t know it until it’s too late.
Thankfully, her ex-boyfriend Reef Mitchell isn’t ready to give up on Kaley and he holds out hope they can mend their relationship. But he may have to save her life first.
There are plenty of twists and turns in "Take My Hand," which would make a great movie (in my humble opinion). From snow-covered mountains to gulf seas, you’ll find danger, mystery, and/or romance on every page. You won’t want to put this book down. Also, the spiritual lessons of faith and trust in this story are deep, meaningful, and worth learning for our own personal adventures.
I highly recommend, "Take My Hand," and encourage you to follow this author and let her books take you from one adventure to another.
Therapist Kaley Colbert is about to leave for a much needed ski vacation with her church singles group. Shortly before, she takes a last minute emergency session for her coworker and boss as he is tied up. She doesn’t know yet that this innocent favor sets off a chain of events that puts her in immediate danger. Reef Mitchell is part of the singles group, and Kaley’s secret ex. They never told anyone they dated, and now it’s awkward. Reef still has feelings for her, though, and as they spend a bit of time together on the trip, he’s praying she might reciprocate. In-control Kaley starts to let loose and have some fun at the mountain, but then the danger begins. Can Kaley and Reef put all their trust in the Lord, for her to survive and for Reef to find her? While this book is a clean, Christian suspense, author Kristen Hogrefe Parnell does not leave you left wanting! Buckle up for some twists, turns, and tense moments! I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.
Take My Hand is installment #1 in the Crossroads Suspense series by author Kristen Hogrefe Parnell.
Kaley needed a vacation from work at Trauma Counseling Solutions (TCS). Her last client needed help. But could Kaley go on vacation and leave her work behind?
Valentina was a Hollywood star, but what was she hiding? Was Reef Mitchell really going to teach the newbies how to snow ski? Did this include Kaley who had dumped him?
Wow, Take My Hand is full of suspense. So, if you are looking for a novel full of suspense you need look no further. A kidnapping, a murder, and a Gasparilla Pirate Parade all make Take My Hand a great read. I give Take My Hand 5*/5*.
Disclaimer: I receive complimentary books from various sources, including, publishers, publicists, authors, and/or NetGalley. Seeking to support her boss at Trauma Counseling Solutions, Kaley has no idea that by meeting with his client, Anthony Casales, she would be taking on the mob.
This is a tense tale from start to finish, keeping us wondering if the heroes will catch on to what is happening before organized crime takes out all the key players. Kaley is working on her master’s thesis, analyzing Viktor Frankl’s writings about the role of suffering in life and how his conclusions compared to what God declared in Scripture. Taking a short vacation with the young people of her church to go skiing seems like a refreshing break, until it isn’t.
As her journey through danger reaches its climax, Kaley determines that “The best way to define her life was not by what she’d done but by Who she belonged to.” While this might sound trite to some who don’t really want to listen to what God has to say, it is profoundly true!
Whether you enjoy a journey through faith or simply like a thrilling suspense novel, this book is for you.
Kaley is ready for a long overdue vacation with her singles group from church to the mountains. She is excited to see snow and to embrace all the cold temperatures. It all adds up to perfection except the fact that her ex-boyfriend will be there as well. She has all intentions of avoiding him at all costs until he volunteers to help her learn how to ski. When her trip isn’t going as she had planned, she starts noticing very strange things going on. Is it her imagination?
The story had some suspense, romance, and faith mixed together to keep the reader trying to get to the end to find out how it will turn out. The characters were well written and developed. I had never read any books by the author, but I was grateful to read this one. I look forward to more books in this series to see how things will turn out.
I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.
Take My Hand has all the expected twists and surprises of a good (and clean) romantic suspense novel, plus great friend group dynamics, sweet romance, and more that kept me turning pages. The suspense thread in the story was unique to me (maybe because of how I look at the world) but also realistic when you consider it from a wider perspective: we never know what’s happening in other people’s lives and, yes, evil is all around us, even in people and places that seem innocent. It was fun to see Reef and Kaley’s relationship begin to bud again, and I thought there was a nice balance between the romance and suspense throughout the book.
I read this author’s YA dystopian series several years ago and enjoyed it. Now I’m hooked on her romantic suspense! I read the second book in this series (Hold Your Breath) right after Take My Hand – and I’m looking forward to the third book (Watch Your Back) when it’s available.
Oh my goodness, this was such a good book! It is such a great mix of mystery, suspense, romance...all woven together masterfully to take you on a wild adventure. Kaley needs to get away from stress, but that doesn't exactly happen the way she wanted it to.
She is set to go on a trip with her church group and her ex is there. There are several twists and turns and I truly enjoyed each one of them. I wondered a few times if what I was thinking was going to happen was truly going to or if it was something else. I love books that keep me wondering.
5/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
I just love second-chance romance stories! And, being from south-Georgia, how fun to live vicariously through a great story set in snowy Beech Mountain, North Carolina. Suspense kept me turning the pages way into the night until I got to the end, and the characters have me longing for another book. I’m sure hoping this is the beginning of a series! Great seasonal read for winter time, but even better – order it now and enjoy it during the warm days of spring and summer and live vicariously through the characters like I did! You’ll be glad you did.

I love the cover on this book! And yes, I do judge a book by its cover, as well as its reviews, author and the synopsis… Which is why I am happy I took a chance on this new-to-me author. The beginning had me reminiscing about my own young adult/single days participating in fun outings with other Christian young people. I didn’t experience any of the danger surrounding this story, of course, but it is what drew me to the book in the first place. The action, suspense, characters, and pacing are what kept my interest and what will definitely entice me to read the next book in the series. This is a clean Christian evangelical, suspense story so if that’s not your cup of tea, you might want to skip this one, but I loved it so I highly recommend it.
Audiobook: This was my first experience with Kristen Hogrefe Parnell's work, and it was entertaining. Kaley Colbert went on a ski trip with the singles' club from her church. The author's description of the setting was lovely. The issue I had with the story was the main character named Kaley Colbert. She was an educated person, but some of her actions and thought processes didn't make a lot of sense. I appreciated the intense action scenes, but wondered about the resulting trauma, none of which was addressed. Sarah Rogers' narration was fine, and she kept my attention with her performance. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
