A hidden murder. A forced engagement. And a doppelgänger. She can’t run—not anymore.

Ellie should’ve died in the accident, and she knows it. Yet she wakes downstream with a head wound.

Instead of her small hometown, she finds herself trapped in land run era Oklahoma—complete with bonnets, corsets, floor-length dresses, and covered wagons.

Realizing this isn’t some cruel joke, she’s scooped up by a man who’s convinced she’s his missing sister. Despite her plans to get back to her real time, Ellie takes the place of this missing doppelgänger to survive.

But her newfound family has other plans.

To settle a land dispute, there’s to be a wedding with the malicious neighbor.

And she’s the bride.

Ellie is determined to escape before they make her say “I do.” But when she meets Sam—the only man who truly believes she’s from the future—she questions if running is the only option.

A fast-paced time travel novel set in 1894, Twins in Time is brimming with rousing stakes, endearing romance, family tragedy, and stirring imagery of the Old West.

Natalie Griffin is a historical fiction author, mom of two, and pianist.

As a toddler, she’d scribble illegible words on paper, then recite her fanciful stories to her mother.

Born and raised in Oklahoma, she can’t stand the triple-digit heat, but she does enjoy the excitement that comes from tornado season. If you talk about the storms, you’re guaranteed to have a long, animated conversation ahead of you.

She mainly writes stories set in the 19th century, believing she always belonged there, with corsets and log cabins. She’s a sucker for anything involving fairies. Anything.
She stays busy with her hunter husband, two daughters, three dogs, and two cats.

In a Nutshell: Decent story, flat characters, okayish portrayal of the historical time. Expected a lot more from the promising premise and that appealing cover.

Story Synopsis:
Ellie, an Oklahoma resident in her mid-twenties, is in the car one evening with her friend when they meet with a serious accident. Ellie knows that she has no way of escaping death. However, she somehow ends up awakening more than a century prior, into land-run-era Oklahoma, and with a stranger claiming her as his sister. Completely befuddled, she accompanies the man until she figures out what happened. However, she soon realises that the girl she is supposed to be, Elizabeth Hersley (also her namesake), is soon to be married to the repugnant neighbour. Will Ellie be able to escape into her own time before the impending “I Do”?
The story is written in the first person perspective of Ellie.

Most of the book generated mixed feelings in me.

😕 The contemporary to historical transition was impactful at the start. The locals’ response to Ellie’s garb, their reaction to Ellie’s tendency to curse, and a few more scenes were fun to read. However, after a point, there is no mention about Ellie’s adjustment process, except for when Ellie has to complain. Her character development is quite shallow.

😕 That brings me to the second point. If I were in Ellie’s place and suddenly transported to the mid-1890s, I would have had many reactions – confusion, anger, fear, frustration,… maybe even curiosity. But Ellie’s emotional reactions are almost uni-dimensional and minimal. Her complaints seem mostly restricted to the lack of air-conditioning, her tangled hair, and a couple of complaints about the outhouse and the corset. Surely she should have been more worried about the lifestyle adjustment than with trivial issues! There are no feelings explored at all, all the more odd as it is written in first person. This is where the book had the maximum potential but minimal development.

😕 Some of the secondary characters are interesting. Elliot (Ellie’s “brother”), Sam, Johnathan (a Cherokee Indian) and Mable are memorable. Unfortunately, most of these characters have very limited roles to play, and don’t budge from their predefined roles. There are no surprises coming our way in terms of character development.

😕 One of the main things that MAKES historical fiction is the language, especially the dialogues. I can understand why Ellie spoke in her modern lingo throughout the story. But the other characters also, without a single exception, sounded the same! There was nothing in their speech to make us feel like they were from another era. Merely eliminating cuss words doesn’t make for historical English.

😕 Another important aspect in historical fiction is the recreation of that era to modern readers. However, we learn hardly anything about those times. Sure, there are a couple of paras on the outhouse, more content on the clothes, and a couple of chores such as a scene with the washing of clothes. But the FEEL of the era doesn’t come out well. I can’t help but compare this with Leslie Mannings’ Upside Down in a Laura Ingalls Town, which also explored the idea of a modern girl in a historical world. Manning’s book recreated the old town era so well, while this current book made me feel like I was just reading a contemporary story, just with characters wearing corsets and riding horses.

😕 There are many continuity errors. For instance, Sam once asks her (just a few days after her arrival) why she wasn't in church on Sunday and she replies that she didn't realise she was supposed to be there. But surely, her new “dad” and ‘brother” would have gone to church and definitely ensured that she came along with them, especially if it was the ‘Bible Belt’ as she calls it. Another scene has her father waking her up at 4am by pouring a bucket of water on her on the bed. After breakfast, she goes back to bed to sleep. How's the bed dry so soon? There are also many things left unexplained, but this goes into spoiler territory, so I won’t expound on them.

Because of all these issues, I struggled to concentrate on the book and it took me a whopping eight days to finally complete it. Other reviewers have called it fast-paced, so there might not be an issue with pacing, just with my reaction to the plot.

All in all, I did expect a lot more from this indie book as it seemed to focus on an interesting premise. However, the lacklustre writing and flat character development didn’t appeal to me and this ends up as a disappointment.

2 stars.

My thanks to author Natalie Griffin and BookSirens for the DRC of “Twins in Time”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. I am very sorry this didn’t work out better.

This was a cute, interesting story and I really liked the historical aspect. The writing was also nicely flowing and engaging.

I think what it lacked was depth and nuance in the characters - they were very cookie cutter. The main character Elizabeth was neutral, the love interest Sam didn’t have any character traits that I can think of aside from being good-looking, and the antagonist was 100% irredeemably evil (complete with villain monologue). Elizabeth didn’t have much personality to her and was very passive throughout most of what happened, she didn’t have any strong hopes or dreams or relationships, she had no hobbies or idiosyncrasies that would have made her a bit more interesting. It would have been cool to see her bring her modern sensibilities and skills back to that time and really make an impact on the plot, but aside from cursing she seemed to act almost identically to the doppelgänger she replaced, going along with whatever someone else told her to do whether it was her father, brother or love interest.

1894 Oklahoma, Elizabeth, a bride to be tries to tell her future husband that she doesn’t want to marry him. She ends up beaten and thrown in the river.

2022 Oklahoma, a student, Ellie, is a passenger in a car that skids on ice, and is thrown into the same river. She finds herself on a river bank, cut and bruised, but alive and living in 1894. She is the living image of the bride to be, whose family has been searching for her, and who embrace her as their own, despite her protests.

Ellie has to adapt to her new life, whilst trying to find her way back to her own time. She is helped by Sam, a friend of Elizabeth’s, who accepts her insistence that she is from the future.

Things gets complicated for a modern girl living a Pioneer life, with violence, and primitive living conditions, but as she adapts to her new surroundings she continues to be as fiercely independent as any modern day woman would be.

Can she return to her own time? Will she want to return to her own time?
This story gripped me to the end, with lots of plot twists and drama. The research that went into the time it’s set in is meticulous, and I make no apologies for awarding it 5 stars.

“.. a single person shouldn’t be your deciding factor in anything. You are the decision.”
⌚🐯

I've committed a sin & I've a confession to make. I skim read! 😭 Hear me out!! I never, and I mean NEVER brush up the paragraphs but here, the repetitions were unbearable to go through & I had to commit the unintended crime.

"Twins in Time" by Natalie Griffin follows our 21st century Ellie travelling back in time to 19th century Oklahoma, just to come face to a fated marriage & a murder mystery.

Ellie's 19th century Doppelganger is nowhere to be found & our Ellie is mistaken for their Elizabeth & it's up to our Ellie now to search for a way to escape the fate bestowed upon her & find out what happened to their Elizabeth.

The premise sounds quite promising right? And the oh so gorgeous cover has caught your eyes too, I guess!

But..only if the story lived up to its beauty of premise & cover. 😮‍💨

The story started off well & it was interesting reading Ellie's disconcerting thoughts, the beauty of 19th century Oklahoma & Ellie's whining of absence of technological advancements & the wretched tight corsets but after a point these internal dialogues became repetitive with no actual conversations happening between the characters.

I found the characters to be bland & even though the story was from Eliie's perspective, I wasn't attached to her nor rooting for her & I simply wished the story to end asap.

I like reading descriptions of the surroundings but if you consume 70% of my time without any developments to story or characters per se but rush the last 30% of it, asking me to believe that everything turned out well without any justifying the claims, I can't buy it.

The murder plot & Ellie's adjustment to new life is underdeveloped & for a 21st century girl she doesn't act like one, except for spewing profanities.

There's absolutely no substance as to what led to time travel & why. It made me think that having an amnesiac protagonist would've led to the same outcome.

The romance felt forced & unnecessary and the other side characters were flat as well. Nobody seemed to be adding anything to the story.

The book suffered from classic case of abundance of plotholes but absence of plots.

If you're simply looking for a happy ending read & you're fine with suspending your beliefs then maybe you can give it a go but sadly this wasn't for me (even though I really wanted to love it.)

I received an ARC in exchange of honest reviews.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My main criteria for a 5 star read is “was it captivating enough to make me not want to put it down?”

I stayed up late, I dreamt about it, I finished it the next day. My love for historical fiction grew this year when I got to read to my grandma. This story drew me back into the setting of the old west with dirt roads, horses, covered wagons, a life without the stress of social media and Ellie was thrown into this time as a doppelgänger for an ancestor who was murdered. Interesting, fun and sprinkled with a little romance, this story held me captivated and wanting everything to work out in the end.

A well written time travel story from modern day and the old west when times were very different for women .

A tangle of family feuds and an unwanted wedding awaits Ellie to a brutal man and a father and brother who insists she does .

I don’t want to say too much as it would spoil it for the readers .

An enjoyable read with good characters a bit unbelievable at times but then what is time travel if not fantasy .

A worthwhile read I would definitely read more from this author

First off - this book is physically beautiful. The cover and interior designers did an amazing job. This is one hardcover I will love displaying on my bookcase.
This is the first published novel by this author, but by the time you finish the book you'll think she's an old pro. With the variety of the cast of characters you will be guessing until the end exactly who's riding up on their horse to sweep the heroine off her feet - whether or not she is willing. There's a little of everything in here...history, drama, spicy romance, a dangerous villain, a murder mystery, and midnight rendezvous under the meeting tree...
If you like any of those things give this first time author a try! I'm excited to see what she writes next...I hope there's a sequel to this one!

Twins in Time is a compelling historical romance novel centered on Ellie who is flung into a river during a car accident, wakes up in 1894, and is forced to resume the life of her doppelgänger. To her surprise, her family in 1894 has agreed to settle a land dispute with their feuding neighbors by marrying her off to their son, but Ellie has other plans.

This book was so fun to read! This story had time travel, tasteful romance (just bit of spice), and even a bit of mystery. I read the book in two days and enjoyed every bit of it. I read another review that mentioned how this book was not truly a historical fiction novel because Ellie never truly adapted to the time period, but I strongly disagree. I feel like the author was aware of the anachronism and purposefully used it to her advantage. You will even see that topic addressed towards the end of the book.

I do want to mention that this book contains scenes of abuse and death, which may be very triggering.

Overall, this book was such a joy to read! I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed reading this, it was what I was hoping for in a time-traveling mystery novel. I was invested in what was happening to the characters and the world they were in. It did everything that I was hoping for from the description and left me wanting more.

I met Natalie at a book signing, and she was very sweet, but unfortunately I believe she needs a new editor. There were many continuity errors/poor editing.
P 50 someone says “Elliot, will you say grace?” And then it says “Sam’s prayer was short and sweet”
P 103 Someone is “depraved of a proper burial”
At one point it says she has bangs, and then later it says she was considering getting bangs
P 147 a character is named Mabel, but from p152 her name is spelled “Mable”
The brother and sister are in their mid twenties and act like they are 7 or 8
P 162 mentions a depressing breakfast and then again on p 163 there is depressing mingling
P 187 mentions “a phrase he’d likely heard from his mother since birth” when earlier in the book Sam says his mother died in childbirth.
I also was frustrated by a lack of character development. I didn’t like anyone in the story. Not one person. I also don’t understand how the father character could spank his 24 year old “daughter” (she is the one who has traveled back in time) and yet she still loves him? I don’t find that believable.
All the cussing just wasn’t for me, either.
This is Natalie’s first book, and I hope she hires a new editor! I will say, the cover art is gorgeous.

Time Travel and romance
An interesting and creative plot. The heroine is thrust back in time and is left to figure out how to get back home. I thought the main character was a bit shallow, she wanted to go back home so badly, it was just about all she talked about, but then she was very easily distracted by a guy she felt a connection with and continuously wanted to jump into bed with him. Also during the same time she is supposed to marry another guy, but she just does not like him. I though she should have had a better idea of life in her new time period and how she needed to act to fit in better, until she could figure out how to get back home. Overall it was an interesting story and flowed well, there is a HEA and is worth the read. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.

Twins in Time is a time-travelling romance novel with a bit of mystery set in Oklahoma 1894.

Ellie was in an accident and wakes up to realize she is in the past. Not only does she find herself in 1894, she is mistaken for someone who looks exactly like her. Her doppelgänger has a father and brother and is set to marry in order to settle a land dispute between the two families. Unfortunately, while she tries to get back to her time, she takes the place of her doppelgänger.

Do I recommend it? Yes. The storytelling was great that it kept me interested throughout. The only thing missing would be to have the characters be a little more fleshed out in their personality or character traits.

I'm not typically one to read romance books but this believable, time-portal-ish romantic journey that took me back in time along with the MC. it delighted me at every chapter and I hated putting this book down for real-life interruptions! This story had me yearning for the outcome all the way to the last page of this wonderfully paced slow burn. Its spice level was absolutely perfect and left me gushing and saying "Awwwww" rather than cringing (thank you, Griffin!) And now I hear Griffin has another book coming? Yes, please! If you want a pleasant romantic getway with a mix of supernatural travel through time to the olden days, Twins in Time is a real treat.

I may have been reading too much fantasy lately, but I was frustrated by the lack of explanation. First of all, how did this thing come to happen? Secondly, why can't it work the other way? Finally, SPOILERS, why oh why did we never learn how she is her own great, great grandmother? The hope that this final answer would be there eventually is a large part of why I even finished the book. It's not bad, I just get a little too drawn in and cannot stand the frustration of imagining my modern self in those restrictive times.

Time

I’m a sucker for a time travel story, and this one was pretty good. It was also a fish out of water story, a person out of place, which I feel in my own life at times. There were a couple of editorial issues early on (I.e., a scene where Elliot prays over the food and the narrator said she liked Sam’s prayer even though Sam wasn’t even in the scene), but those were confined to that beginning (either that, or I was too wound up in the story to notice).

This book was just okay, and I would give it 2.5 stars if I could. My bad that I did not read the whole summary because I don't like spoilers, but the title does imply 2 people time traveling. Also, the author had too many bad word choices and bad editing which distracted from the story. "I dropped the almanac page into the depths with a sickening plop." how exactly would a single page even make a noise? "My hair was tangle badly, meaning I had to brush it slowly." What else would it mean?

I picked this up because of a very promising time-travel premise, historical fiction plot and a very appealing cover!

But, after reading a few chapters, the whole concept of time-travel started feeling flat and I was left with zero plot development, shallow characters and an even shallower character Ellie -a twentieth century woman transported back in time at eighteenth century, who did nothing in the entire story except cursing and complaining about the lack of air conditioner, tight corsets.

Even the side characters felt so stupid and forced into the story. There was absolutely no mention of what led to the time-travel and how it happened. The author didn’t even bother to explain.

Everything was rushed towards the end, just to finish off the whole story, leaving everything unexplained.

This had a potential to be a gripping time-travel historical fiction, but it failed miserably. Was quite a disappointment to me.

Thanks to the author and Booksirens for the arc, I am leaving this review voluntarily!

“Twins In Time” takes place in present day Oklahoma, before a tragic accident sends protagonist Elizabeth to the past. She’s taken the place of a young woman who’s recently died, and was part of an arranged marriage thanks to her father. The only person to (somewhat) believe that Elizabeth is from the future is Sam, who befriends her as she gets used to her new lifestyle as she helps him grieve the girl he’d lost. During this time, Elizabeth learns the twisted truth of what happened to the other version of herself that she’s replaced. She finally tells her found-family the truth, after taking matters into her own hand. But she quickly learns that even in this existence, you can’t always trust those you think you should.

I wanted this book to be a bit more fast paced for a time travel novel. I also felt like I was reading the same scene over and over with Ellie - she just kept saying the same things over & over about how she had no one back home & she might as well stay with Sam, Elliot & Newton. Overall it just wasn’t captivating until the last few chapters & even then it was still a bit boring.
