Holodomor : What's the Matter with Green Kansas?

Rate this book
Holodomor (Ukrainian for 'to kill by starvation'), the name given to the political famine engineered by Joseph Stalin in the Ukraine during the winter of 1932-33, has come to Kansas with a vengeance. As Ukraine was the breadbasket of Europe for its wheat production, so Kansas was the breadbasket of Azuleland, formerly the United States of America, and much of the world.

Lucy Ling-Romero, child of survivors of China's Cultural Revolution, is disheartened, angry and defiant when she sees the conditions that her parents had fled happening before her very eyes in her adopted home of Wichita, Kansas. She came to Wichita when her husband was hired as an aeronautical engineer by Cessna Aircraft Company. Along with most other industry, the city's aerospace producers had fled the city for the boom countries, Mexico and Nigeria, two of the leaders of the Free World.

When Wichita is taken over by woke radicals and her home is seized, Lucy retreats to her family ranch in northwest Kansas. There she hopes to ride out the uprising by being self-sufficient thanks to her farm produce. Her dream becomes a nightmare when the Azuleland government moves to collectivize agriculture. The stories her parents told her about enduring the Cultural Revolution in China and seemed so distant to her then, were now becoming disturbingly real.

Lucy's Asian Tiger Mom had instilled in her an unusually strong resolve. Would that be enough for her to survive the greatest crisis the country had yet suffered?
