Root: Talon Hill Quickstart

Rate this book
War has returned to the Woodland.

The Marquise de Cat let her armies to victory over many of the clearings, but the Eyrie Dynasties rise again to oppose her. And the mice, rabbits, and foxes of the Woodland do not sit idly by – the Woodland Alliance emerges, a homegrown rebellion to free the Woodland from any oppressors.

In the midst of this war, you and your friends – vagabonds all – travel between the clearings. You take on the jobs that no one else will or can do. You choose whom you serve, if anyone…and you may tip the balance of the war.

Root: The Roleplaying Game is based on the award-winning Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right board game by Leder Games. In Root: The RPG, you play vagabonds, going on adventures and changing the Woodland with your actions.

This booklet is a sampling of the core rules of Root: The RPG, complete with six pregenerated characters and an entire prewritten clearing to give you a strong starting situation for a few sessions of play. Open the book, give it a read, pick some characters, and get playing! All you need is some paper, pencils, and pairs of six-sided dice!

This looks like a very fun little RPG where you play as cute woodland creatures at war (a la Nimh or Watership Down). It's quite complicated for a quickstart, with a rules system that is clearly Powered By The Apocalypse but includes elements from other RPGs like multi-harm tracks. It's definitely something that requires a bit of close reading rather than being pick-up-and-play, and given the complex political situation, I'd definitely suggest doing it over several sessions instead of treating it as a oneshot! The characters entirely have hooks for getting involved in the trouble here, but some are stronger than others, so make sure you as GM are giving compelling reasons if your players pick the less involved pregens. But it looks great. The document is put together well and extremely cute, and everything's well organized. I wish the pdf version were posted (given that it's months later now) since the pregens need to be printed, though!
