Shamble Into A New World Of Ghoulish Adventure!Gamer girl Kotone is thrilled when she receives a copy of Free Life Fantasy Online, a.k.a. FLFO from her younger sister. In the world of FLFO, Kotone decides to become a zombie, one of the game's inhuman races that's difficult to master--even for experienced players. But that's not a deterrent to Kotone. In fact, when she embarks on her first quest, she finds a world of wonders that are about to become a huge part of her IRL life!
Personally, I enjoyed the story about a teenage girl joining a full immersion fantasy RPG MMO and playing as a zombie. It felt like an actual game, which does include discussions on the rules, character building, skills, crafting and grinding although actual character sheets were not shown that often. The story details her first explorations of character and world and it is very much a slice-of-life kind of story of cute girls doing cute things (sort of). The characters and conversations are simple though (at least for the moment), it is very much a game with little real tension, and I can imagine the attention to game details can be grating to readers with less interest in games. Also, for a story where the blurb talks about the difficulties of playing a zombie, those are (not entirely unexpected) reasonably quickly solved. The biggest eye rolls were the few fan service moments such as the MC describing her own breasts as mountains and gamers being occasionally distracted by them and being vocal about it. So not the best within the genre but entertaining enough for me to finish it in one go.
I gave 5 stars because it is a great light novel, but it is still a "light" novel. Very interesting and fun, but there are no real stakes so far.
I do like that they kept it realistic even with full dive VR. MC dives into the game for a few hours, but still has to log out to eat dinner and stuff. And the players often role-play, but they still know it's a game and keep it casual.
I really enjoyed this. I think a few of the game explanations were a little more than the reader needed and some of the boob comments were eye rolling (but accurate to real life, I've read online game chats and forums... so you know points for accuracy I guess lol) but overall this was fun and cozy. I'm excited to see where the Cthulhu aspects come in. Honehone found the Necronomicon....
