Ahren and his companions journey on to Evergreen, finding new courage after the traumas of the Green Sea. Setting off, then, to traverse the continent in search of the missing Paladin Yollock, it isn’t long before they find themselves sucked into a maelstrom of adventures involving a woman who has been robbed, a desperate Cape Verstaad grandee, not to mention a cutthroat city which proves itself a veritable nest of ne’er-do-wells. Controlled by the brilliant assassin Reik Silvermantle, this hub of lawlessness and immorality presents Ahren and his friends with one of their greatest challenges…
I was born in Krefeld, Germany in 1976 and still live there under the caring eyes of my wife and two Norwegian Forest cats. Originally a publishing salesman, I couldn't resist the lure of writing, and after over a dozen years of playing the gamemaster in pen-and-paper groups, not to mention reading hundreds of fantasy novels, I decided to finally try to write a story myself that I thought might be worth telling. And so my novel Ahren was published in Germany, the first in the best-selling series The 13th Paladin.
When I am not creating new worlds and stories, I like to relax by playing pen-and-paper and story rich video games, reading or binging on TV series. I also practise Jiu Jitsu and the art of handling ancient Japanese weapons like the Katana or the Bo Staff.
Penultimate volume in this long series, and I enjoyed the characters, even though I didn't understand the premise. It didn't make sense to me that they stopped and spent so much time trying to rescue this woman. In any case, I look forward to the final volume.
Weiterhin super Unterhaltung.
Guten Tag, Herr Weitze! Oh Boy! Do you have a winner?! I started with book 1 and have just finished number 11. I didn't want to stop and write a review for any of the in between stories because I wanted to find out what happened next! It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a story so much that I couldn't put it down. There were quite a few nights that I stayed up way to late because I had to read what happened and how they all got out of trouble! Thank you for this really great story! The hard part now, is I have to wait until book 12 comes out! I really liked how you developed the characters. I could 'see' myself in the story Especially from 'Falk's' point of view. You made Ahren quite believable from his time as a young apprentice to the Paladin he is today. I'm not sure I like how smart mouthed Culhen is now. I liked him better in book 6 or 7 than I do in the current one. I am not going to stop reading the story because of that. I'm just making a comment. I really like Kamaluq. Please don't make him too much like Culhen! :) After I finish the 'last' book, I hope you have another story waiting and that it is as good as this one!! Thank You, Torsten! Keep up the good work!
I've grown very attached to these characters. I'm looking forward to future volumes! I like that Torsten Weitze uses traditional storytelling tropes and that even though the protagonist(s) suffer trauma and loss, they grow and they become better because of it rather than letting it consume them. It's nice that Ahren has not lost his drive to save as many people as possible and his true goodness, that of a traditional hero, brings out the best in others.
There are some spots where the proofreading leaves something to be desired, but to be honest I'd rather read the next volume sooner and deal with the typos. Haha
This book would have been 5 stars but it made me think of how badly and depraved the human soul can be. It also shows how hope, loyalty and bravery make people in general better because it just the right thing to do! This book specifically shows how dark the human soul can be and also how a complete stranger can give everything because it is morally right. I would recommend this book to teens and adults alike who want to believe in goodness and right and for hope itself. It a ride of ups and downs with many surprises.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the first 10 novels not not giving anyone lower than five stars but I cannot even fathom why you changed narrators for the 11th novel! It’s very hard to listen to because after 10 books over 4000 pages an individual gets used to a certain narrator. Gildart was awesome. changing to Stuart was an abysmal failure; I must point out that this is not an indictment of Stewart. I was going to stop reading this book or listening to it. That is until I noticed that the next book went back to Gildart. Thank goodness because I would’ve left them with a battle unfinished.
The editing has suffered, declining in the last few books in this series. Multiple spelling and grammar errors in addition to “spell check” inserting the wrong word due to a typographical error on the first letter. I think the author should be less concerned with release dates and more so with a polished product. It’s a good series that continues to develop characters. Still definitely worth the read.
I’ve really enjoyed this series, which I stumbled upon accidentally. I love the characters and the world the author has built. There’s a few small but annoying phrases that are repeated throughout these books that I wish the author would retreat from using anymore tho, such as “erstwhile master/apprentice” and one other that’s not coming to mind at the moment. Absent that, it’s been a lot of fun devouring the series so far.
An amazing gripping tale unlike previous in the series
The author continues to amaze and entertain with a storyline so fresh and different from previous books in the series. He challenges our heroes in one of the worst environments possible, with lies and treachery around every corner. They rise to the challenge, but just barely. Kudos to Mr. Weitze!
The 11th installment of the epic fantasy continues to keep you guessing. The Adversary is gathering strength, the Paladins are engaged at the front, and Ahren and his crew are off to find the last 2 Paladins. This episode is full of battles large and small as well as new characters coming into the story. It’s another wonderful read!
While I liked the book and love the series, the decision to change narrators for this installment of the series was beyond disappointing. You grow to love the characters and the narrator’s portrayal of them goes a long way in shaping how you view them. The change in narrator was so distracting it almost ruined the book. Thankfully, they corrected this in “The Call of the Ice Fields”.
This book started off quick and got really slow about half way through. It was a little bit of a slow march in the middle but it was definitely worth the read. Every one of the other books in this series is a 5/5. This one was a 3.5/5. It was still really good but a little bit slower than the other ones
This is one of the best series of novels that I have read since The Dune and The Lord of the Rings. Really wonderful to read along with a great story, without all the smutty lines and gore. A big Thanks Torsten.
All the previous books in the series have small translation mistakes; unfortunately, with this book the quality of the translation has deteriorated. This is the only reason for not rating it 5 stars
And so, onwards we go into the ice fields. This has been one fan-dam-tastic ride so far. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next book. If you are looking for a great adventure read this series.
Another wait till the next adventure! As always it had twists and turns that made it hard to put down! The city was rough can’t wait to see what the ice has in store for the group!
Torsten has crafted an absorbing saga. The characters are engaging, the plots well planned with twists and turns to keep us guessing. I eagerly await the next volume.
I also recommend the Nebula Convicto series, although at present I can only find the first book in English translation.
I have spent so many happy hours reading this series and am always waiting for the next book. The characters have substance and are created in a way that that has depth and caring about them is relatable.
This story is great. I love the characters. They come across as real people. I just thought this was the last volume and I have been waiting for the end.
The great adventures of Ahren and the other paladins continue, and this book does not disappoint. I was so glued to it that I would read on my phone while stuck in traffic. I can't wait for book 12!
I have really enjoyed reading this series. I cannot wait for the next. I don't want them to ever end. Maybe some day we will get to read about the original paladins.
Really appreciate the flow of the story. The action is believable and the descriptions are fine enough to be able to visualise what is going on and what is around our heroes'. Anxiously awaiting the continuation in volume XII.
Every book, every story, big or small, is told with high adventures, funny antics, incredible companion animals or boundless love. Truly one of the best series I've ever read.
