Alyric is a Paladin of Justice, who lost his life defeating a fallen angel. A young librarian, who calls himself Book, died to protect a dangerous secret. Many years after their deaths, both are brought back into the world and offered an ominous deal; if they release a powerful and ancient creature, wrongfully imprisoned, they will be granted a second chance at life. The two new friends embark on a perilous mission where things aren't always what they seem. Not everyone who claims to be a friend can be trusted. This includes the beautiful Winter Queen, a snarky shapeshifter with a deadly grudge, and a lonely elven necromancer who would like to be more than just friends. Alyric and Book must find a way to break a vampire's curse, and steal a priceless artifact from an evil king, all while uncovering the mysteries of their forgotten pasts. But can Book, a demon's child, and Alyric, a divine warrior, overcome their differences and learn to trust in each other?
I was so fortunate enough to be the editor for this book and get to read it before the public (but is now available! ) Kirsha Fox is my favorite author of the entire year! Top three of my all times favorites. Wonderful story telling in this novel with characters you will absolutely love! One of the best stories I've had the pleasure of reading. Book and Alyric wake up with no memory in the Cinquefoil Tower. All they have to do is help to free an Eldar named Traveller and they get a second chance at their lives. Adult fantasy so there are adult themes in it but masterful world building and so much to adore in Son of Deception! Be sure to check it out!
Once upon a time, if someone had asked me what genre of book I read I would have said fantasy. Then, over time, I fell away from fantasy. I wanted to like fantasy and be a fantasy reader, but they were too dense, too confusing, too complex In a way that made me feel tired instead of engaged.
Then this book came to my rescue. I opened it, expecting to read the first few chapters and then put it away, “For later,” but never pick it up again because it made me tired to think about... that’s obviously not what happened here.
By chapter 3, I was entirely invested. It’s world building was vast, but never felt like a slog. The characters were rich and flawed and relatable. Most of the time, it felt cozy, good overcame evil time and again, two friends were on a journey to save themselves and better the world, the antics were oftentimes funny enough to make me laugh aloud… it only made the dark twists that much more surprising and upsetting when they happened!
What a ride!
This book made me love fantasy again. I’m excited for The Whiteleaf Child this spring!
I really liked this adventure story. It was bright, and fun, without being childish.
In general, there were two stories going on. You had the main adventure, the getting of the blood to release the Traveler. Then you had the story of the two men from different eras growing up different than their peers and the challenges that they had to overcome. Both stories were well fleshed out and seemed to come alive on the page.
This was definitely a worthwhile read. I can't wait to see what Kirsha Fox writes next!
If you enjoy fantasy, high fantasy, legends and myths, colorful characters and sweeping tales of adventure, then this book is written just for you. I could not put this book down. From the mysterious circumstances surrounding Alyric and Book's awakening, to the monstrous combat, to the collection of relics and beginning of a quest, complete with creating a band of travelers and all that entails, Ms. Fox had me on the edge of my seat. Drop by drop, the author added new elements of intrigue as the story and plot progressed. The characters are fully developed, relatable and lovable. The pacing is spot on; the plot is intriguing, and the writing is artisan-level. Beautifully rendered settings, evocative emotional scenes and engrossing action all combine to make an extremely satisfying read. Can't wait for the next books in the series!
Really can't say enough about it; I'm an extremely picky reader. If a book needs editing or is poorly written, if the plot isn't consistent or compelling, if the characters are TSTL or flat, I DNF or quietly move along without reviewing. This book was flawless; furthermore, it was one of those books that once you're reading, you forget you're reading. I love when that happens! It's the reason I read to begin with: pure escapism and enjoyment. You'll find that here. Highly recommend.
Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of D&D. I haven't played it in a long time, so I was kind of looking for a story that took me back to those days. This book has a D&D feel to it that I really enjoyed. It has a young adult vibe that is shown as one reads the book.
In fantasy, I look for wonderous and large settings that I can get lost in. Kirsha does a good job with the world in spades. The characters are also those that I can root for.
It is a bit of a slow start as the author describes the world. Be patient with it and you will be rewarded with a great and easy-to-follow story.
I enjoyed it. Thanks Krisha for the great read! It took me a bit since it's a pretty large book but well worth the effort.
4.75 ⭐️'s I was hesitant to give this book a try because of how thick I found the paperback, but I should've picked it up sooner because I actually enjoyed this book! This was my book club's read for January, and I even met the author. She was very nice and attentive to us. I was quite surprised by how much I was invested in the story, and I can't wait to read the next book, which I have already 🤗
DNF. The beginning too cringy to go on. There's strong talk about trust issues in the synopsis, but I didn't see any contention between these cliche DnD knock-off characters. In fact, they become immediate friends and instantly without any explanation why. Yet, we're supposed to believe they have differences? A story without conflict is DOA. Just like this book.
I read Son of Deception and loved so much about it! The characters were interesting and I found myself frequently surprised by the plot twists and turns. I am very busy but it was easy and worth it to make time for this book.
Do you love adventure? Do you hate rolling dice? This book is for you. I got lost on an adventure for hours following two cool characters.. It’s a nail biter! Give it a try. You won’t regret it!
If you like fun, fantasy and friendship this book it for you! Beautifully written, fast paced and jam packed with adventure this boon transports you to a world where mystery awaits. Such an amazing read! Kirsha Fox is sure to be the Queen of Book Tok soon!
I found that this book took some time to get into, and my one hang-up was that the pacing was somewhat inconsistent. That said, the world is thoroughly developed, and I generally find that most high fantasy has a bit of a slower start as the unique rules of the magic system are established. Once I got into it and the rules of the world were laid out, I finished it in two sittings and now I want more.
I’m someone who likes stories to be character-driven, and I enjoyed the way the back and forth between timelines allowed the character development to unfold. Book is my favorite, and the way he navigates the world as a social outcast reveals a lot about each society our heroes visit. The world is very lived-in and fleshed out (yes, that’s a necromancy pun) so although the story is left quite open-ended in this volume, I suspect that a lot of my unanswered questions will be resolved in the next installment as the situation unfolds.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, but now I’ll be snagging Book 2 for myself to see what happens next. 😉
If you enjoy Cozy High fantasy, secrets and friendship then Son of Deception might just be your next read. It's a very character driven story and when I tell you it felt Just like playing a tabletop game you never know where the quest was going to lead you next. It was such an entertaining journey with lots of side quests and bits of humor woven in.
watching Alyric and book’s unlikely friendship come together was so interesting to watch. At times they both frustrated me with their preconceived thoughts, but watching them come to the realization that they could trust each other and form a strong friendship bond was everything.
I loved getting the glimpses of Alyric and Book's past and am eager to see what book two continues to uncover about their past because the way that this book ended was so unexpected to me I was thinking the complete opposite thing was happening.
I was immediately drawn to this book for its unique concept and originality. Fox executes with great world-building, a multitude of creatures, consistent lore, and a dual pov/timeline! Right off the bat - no spoilers - you learn the somewhat vague details of the death of both main characters, from there you are given an insight to how they are "back", what their mission is, and that they will obviously face several obstacles! There is a good deal of charm and intrigue, suspense, some romance (no explicit spice - but not really fade to black either) and a bit of action.
Ideally, I would have loved more action scenes (esp ones that were more difficult and not as easy to overcome), but I love the strong personalities and character dynamics she develops between the characters. I'm excited for book 2 and to see what more Fox has in store for Book and Alyric!
I am IN LOVE with this book! You follow a grand adventure of a half demon Wizard name Book and a Dragon Kin Palidian name Alyric, as they try to uncover their memories and free the prison Elder that has granted them a second life! Every twist and turn that happened had me at the edge of my seat. It felt like reading a very well planned DND campaign. This book is well written, inclusive, and overall addicting to read. I struggled to put it down after I started it. You fall in love with all the characters so easily as they grow and develop. I am so excited to start the second book! This is EASILY one of my favorite books for the year. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy. It's fantastic!
I read Son of Deception over the past weekend and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Fox is a strong writer, descriptive but light and the story flowed... making it easy to turn the pages and keep going. The concept too was unique (no spoilers here) but the characters were easy to identify with, the plot enticing and an overall fun read.
Highly recommend for fans of the genre and Alyric became a quick favorite. Enjoy!!
Absolutely loved the book! I haven't read a good quest oriented book in a while so this was definitely a change for me but a change I loved! I found the tension between Book and Alyric to help pull the plot forward and be interesting. Overall I loved the book and can't wait to read the next one!
📚 This book reminded me of another author I read. It is slow to start because the author builds the world so beautifully for you so when you get to the story, you know exactly where you are. Please take your time and enjoy this beautiful world Kirsha creates. The story is one that will live in your heart! 👦 The characters learn how to trust each other as they embark on their journey. Kirsha has written a very intelligent book. The way she weaved the aspects of the story had me turning the pages so fast. The plot was exceptional. i would tell her not to change one part of this book. ⭐️ I definitely recommend this book. This author has written one of my top reads of 2024!
Kirsha Fox’s Son of Deception is a captivating fantasy full of rich world-building, unexpected twists, and compelling characters. Alyric, a divine warrior, and Book, a librarian with a dangerous secret, are brought back to life and thrust into a perilous mission that tests their trust and challenges their morals.
I loved the evolving friendship between Alyric and Book, as well as the intriguing supporting cast, including a snarky shapeshifter and a lonely elven necromancer. The world Fox created is vivid and immersive, and the balance of action, mystery, and heartfelt moments kept me hooked.
This is a story about trust, redemption, and the blurred lines between good and evil. Perfect for fans of epic fantasy with heart and humor—I can’t wait to continue reading the series!
