Full Metal Alchemist meets Vampire Diaries in this fun and clever dark academia series…
High school is supposed to be about studying, socializing, and marching-band practice. Not fighting vampires. Then one night flipped my world inside out—now, my life sucks. But it isn’t all bad. I’m at a slayer academy, learning things like the real origin of vamps and how to make serious weapons out of thin air.
Every last one of them will pay for what they did. I’m doing great.
Until I come face-to-face with the actual vampire prince…and I’m not sure of anything anymore. Vampires are supposed to be soul-sucking demons. But Khamari is…something else. He’s intelligent and reasonable—and he seems to know things about me that could change everything.
He’s also hiding something big, even from his own kind. And when a threat from an ancient evil is so extreme that a vampire will team up with a slayer to take it down, it isn’t just my need for revenge that’s at stake anymore.

Eighteen year old Raven's world gets turned upside down after her marching band friends are killed by vampires and she discovers she's a vampire slayer. She's immediately pulled into the world of the Slayer Society and while she's ready to seek vengeance she has a lot to learn. As Raven learns more about this world and becomes an agent in the field she's tasked with working with Prince Khamari to get intel on some disruptive vampires.
I liked that this actually felt like a fantasy written for teens. There were some modern pop culture references in here alongside vernacular that actually felt relevant. And though the main characters is 18 and her love interest is a little older it never felt like it was toeing the line between YA and Adult.
Raven is witty and snarky and had personality! I find personality is something lacking in a lot of recent YA fantasy heroines. She's badass without being overly boastful.
I also found myself engaged with the different parts of the magic system of the two very different societies introduced here. The classic tropes and staples of urban fantasy are present here and there's plenty of action.
It was a little lengthy and does take a little time to get into. I'm not sure how well all the Buffy mentions will land with today's teens but this was a fun read.

Welp, obviously the book is done and we are still on for the August 29th release - just a little under 70 days! I'm going to give myself a pat on the back and 5-stars - LOL!
I hope you enjoy my little book and I appreciate you taking the time to read!

I'm the author of Sign of the Slayer (new title as of today) This book will be published at Entangled Teen on August 29th 2023 (new release date of of today) and y'all... with Interview with a Vampire and Vampire Academy shows I feel like vampires are coming back and I'm so excited to add my little book to this wonderful genre.
Anyway about my book...It's Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Full Metal Alchemist.
Here's the tagline: She’s born to fight monsters—but what about the one inside of her?
Right now I am wrapping up the latest edits for this book and I am so excited for you to meet Raven and Khamari! They are powerful, funny but also a bit of a hot mess. I'll be sure to post more exciting updates for my review.
"I cannot read your mind. No, I cannot see your memories, but I see your soul. One foot in the human world, and the other in the vampire."

Band geeks, Vampires, Vampire slayers, enemies to lovers romance, sexy princes, badass characters, action packed, dual points of view (Raven and Khamari) and Paranormal vampire Romance.
This story follows Raven who is in a member of her high school band. Raven's band bus is attacked by Vampires after coming home from a football game. This night Raven realizes that she has strength and power that she never knew she had. Also this is the night her world as she thought she knew it changes forever. She is thrusted into the world of training to be a vampire slayer. Raven is hot-headed, impatient, and roiling with anger at the deaths of her loved ones. She's trying to adjust to her new life in the American slayer society. I love the banter between Raven and Kharami. I wished their relationship progressed more. I really enjoyed the world building.
Sign of the Slayer is a fun YA read. It gives a show on The CW vibes...in a good way. It wasn't perfect obviously. The romance was for me the worst part. I just didn't connect with them but other than that I liked the characters and the world building.
If you like YA Fantasy or want to try Fantasy than I think you'll enjoy this one.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this one. I love Full Metal Alchemist so I was a tad skeptical when I started Sign of the Slayer. Turns out, I didn't need to be...
While this may start off a tad slow, it sets the pace for Raven's chaotic journey ahead. Once this takes off though...hold on. It is one hailstorm after another and I was here for it.
I love all the movie references, the sarcasm and the geeky humor throughout. This actually gave me mild Underworld vibes which made this all the more enjoyable for me. Highly recommend this one for dark academia, vampire and supernatural fans.
You don't have to wait too long to snag this gem as it releases on August 29, 2023. It's fun, quick and worth the read. I sincerely appreciate Entangled Teen and NetGalley for the review copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
One night when tragedy strikes, Raven discovers two things. 1. Vampires exist. And 2. She is a vampire slayer. And now, she wants revenge against vampires for causing that tragedy. However, she gets whisked away from the life she knows to join a slayer training academy. But nothing will stop her from her revenge, not even a vampire prince who she feels an uncontrollable pull too. But, when the threat of an ancient evil comes to light, Raven must stop focusing on revenge (and the distractions trying to keep her from her revenge) and save the world!
This was AMAZING! It was funny with plenty of action and lovable characters! Raven was such a great main character. I loved her! Her inner monologue was so hilarious and her emotions and motivations were very relatable (on a non-vampire revenge scale lol). I loved the way the slayers used alchemical magic to slay vampires! The pacing was great! I stayed engrossed throughout the whole novel. There were multiple twists in the plot! It was just an incredibly engaging story. I didn’t want to read anything else once I started it! I will say that this book does not come off as young adult at all, it’s definitely more new adult. And I thought it was perfect as a new adult book, I just want it to be labeled correctly!
Though I loved this book and gave it 5/5 stars, I did have a few complaints. For one, there were several confusing aspects of this novel. I think it could benefit from a glossary, because there are several different types of slayers as well as vampires, and I found it hard to keep up with the terms for each, so a glossary would be helpful. Also, I was left with questions at the end. Hopefully my questions will be answered in the sequel, but it would’ve been better if they were answered in this story so it didn’t feel incomplete. And there’s one part of the plot that’s about an ill vampire and I’m so confused about why he’s ill and what’s going on with that whole situation. I never understood. And there was one little moment in the book that bothered me. In the beginning, we meet Raven’s best friend Deidre, who is white, and they both go to a predominately Black high school. And there’s one moment where Raven basically applauds Deidre for wanting to attend an HBCU for college. It rubbed me the wrong way because I don’t think she deserves praise for wanting to infiltrate our spaces. That was just a little thing that didn’t sit right with me. No other scenes in the book gave off that vibe, so those side-eye type of feelings didn’t persist for me, but that one part did bother me.
Overall I loved this book so much! Even though I had some critiques, my enjoyment of the book was so high that I didn’t deduct any stars in my rating! It was such a great experience reading this! And the way that the sequel was set up excites me so much! I cannot wait!
Thank you to Entangled Teen Publishing and Sharina Harris for this arc! All opinions are my own.
TW: Self harm induced magic, sexual content, foster care & child abuse mentioned
Conceptually, I love this: inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and numerous other bits of pop culture, Sign of the Slayer envisions something more modern (and frankly a hell of a lot more diverse). Raven's life in Texas is nothing out of the ordinary—until that all gets blown to hell, and she's hauled off to a sort of slayer academy to learn to slay and survive.
But in practice, I found this a bit of a struggle. The author clearly had so many ideas here—I imagine fingers flying on keyboard, stopping to gulp some cold coffee and jot down notes for later in the book, and then back to it—but I ended up wishing that the book would slow down and give things time to develop. At school, for example, Raven promptly learns that she's extra special (not just slayer powers, but weirdly powerful and useful slayer powers), so instead of starting to learn how much she doesn't know, she mouths off a lot, disobeys directions, uses a sledgehammer whenever a scalpel would be most useful, and is rewarded for it in the form of immediate induction to the inner circle. (And then the book kind of moves on from the whole "slayer school" concept.) Maybe if this had been broken into two books, with the first one spending more time with Raven learning things and having to get her power under control...? I'm not sure, but I could have used a bit less of a romance focus and a bit less chaos.
I loved this book! I must say that this book is one of the most enjoyable books that I have read this year. This book had me in a chokehold from the very beginning. Literally after just reading the first two chapters I could not put the book down. We are following a character named Raven where she has a rough past and lost both her mother and father. So now she is raised by her grandmother who taught her how to fight and try to control her anger because due to her anger she was put into a detention center. So as the story is set in Texas Raven is in a marching band that is known for their success and so they are at a football that is 2 hours away from their town. Now mind you their football team isn't know for being good so there is that. So once half time is about to begin the marching band does their thing and after Raven and her best friend see something in their darkness. They had no idea what it was so they paid no mind then out f no where a fight breaks out on the football and the marching band decides to board the bus and leave. After this put it becomes interesting where Raven and the marching band on the bus end up being attacked on the bus by.... A VAMPIRE! This was such a great book and definitely recommend that you read it because firstly its a page turner and secondly its the perfect spooky read.
This was a good read, it’s ya but I think it’s more upper ya. I know i would have been obsessed with this when I was in high school. What’s not to love about a paranormal story with black vampires and vampire slayers. I love the diversity in characters and world lore and seeing black romance in books. It’s also a forbidden romance between a vampire king and a vampire slayer who is out for revenge on vampires after they kill her friend. It has familiar vampire lore and also new history and world building. The world building was along sometimes and the book in general felt long but I enjoyed it. After the way the book ended I’m ready for the next one.
Tropes/themes: - Black romance - Diverse characters and world - Vampire/Vampire slayer - Forbidden romance - Upper YA - Chosen one - Action and intrigue - Dark academia vibes
I love it when books call to me. It’s a sign that I’m going to be invested in the story and really like it, if not love it beyond words. Sharina Harris’s Sign of the Slayer was truly everything.
Eighteen-year-old small-town Texas girl, Raven is simply trying to survive high school and overcome her past. The bright side is she’s currently the section leader of her high school band’s saxophone section. The downside, her life as she knows it will be changed forever when the band bus gets into an accident and she gets thrust into a world she didn’t know existed. Good thing her Grandma Lou taught her how to fight.
The bus accident was no simple accident, thanks to the vampires who attacked it. When Raven sees a man fighting off the vampires, she’s compelled to help him. When she survives the attack, he tells her that she’s now a slayer and takes her to a rundown motel. Leaving her there, he says someone will come to help her. That someone turns out to be Charlotte, co-leader of the Slayer Society, and her boyfriend Richmond who happens to be the Maximus, the strongest of vampire slayers. Raven is then taken to Atlanta, Georgia, and the Tria Prima Academy where she will live and be trained. Unfortunately, this means that she isn’t able to have any sort of communication with anyone from her past. That includes her Grandma Lou.
At slayer academy, Raven excels and quickly becomes an unofficial trusted leader. So much so that she gets welcomed into the inner sanctum. She soon learns that her mystery stranger is none other than Khamari St. John who isn’t just a vampire, but a prince and the future king of the Ankh clan. While Khamari is an ally of the slayers, there are others in the clan who frown upon this. Especially when there is something big in the works.
Sign of the Slayer is an enemies-to-lovers, forbidden romance. I thought I was going to get a Buffy/Angel type story. Nope. This story was so much better than I ever could have imagined. Raven is smart, determined, fierce, and snarky. There’s so much more to her and her story than she even knows. Khamari hides a lot of secrets, but his feelings for Raven aren’t one of them. Their banter is oftentimes fun. Sharina had me glued to the pages of this upper young adult fantasy that’s full of betrayal and mystery. There are so many twists, turns, and surprises in this story. Intense is a very good word to describe this book. You will be left with so many questions and theories. I can not wait for the next book. Because “The war has yet to come.”
It should be noted that this story contains death and violence. Check the publisher’s website for more warnings.

Sign of the Slayer is the newest book by Sharina Harris. This book will be a dark academia in which vampires will play a role. Dark academia for me is a genre which you either nail flawlessly or ruin completly. What will Sharina Harris bring with this book? Can she nail this genre?
Buffy the vampire slayer meets Vampire Diaries in this adventerous fantasy. Team vampire or team slayer? You get to choose. Either way, both teams are amazing! This book is a dark academia I would recommend for sure!
I just finished this absolutely thrilling read, and I couldn't resist sharing my thoughts with you all! So, our girl Raven finds out that vampires are real - yep, you heard it right. And here's the kicker, she's a vampire slayer. 😱 Her life takes a wild turn when she's whisked off to a slayer training academy. But all she has on her mind is revenge against the bloodsuckers. Things get complicated when an ancient evil rears its head and she needs to focus on saving the world instead of her vendetta.
This book was a rollercoaster ride! 🎢 Funny, action-packed and filled with lovable characters. Raven is such a relatable protagonist (well, minus the whole vampire slaying thing 😂). The story was so engrossing that I couldn't put it down! And let me tell you, the plot twists were mind-blowing!
But hey, no book is perfect right? There were bits that left me slightly confused - like different types of slayers and vampires? A glossary would've been super helpful! Also, there were some loose ends which I hope get tied up in the sequel.
One particular scene did bother me though. Early on in the book, Raven's best friend Deidre (who's white) expresses her desire to attend an HBCU and Raven applauds her for it. It felt a bit off to me but thankfully no other scenes gave off that vibe.
All in all, this was an amazing read and I'd give it 4/5 stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 If you're looking for your next adventure packed with magic and vampires - this could be it! Just remember: don't judge a book by its genre - it might surprise you! 😉
I received a free copy of this book via Hear Our Voices Tours and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed this book. It took me a little extra time to read it because I’m typically an audio book reader. I live in houston TX so I really enjoyed the mention Texas landmarks / schools. I love how the book opens up in a high school with a band. I’ve never been in a band. Lol. But the details made me feel like I was back in the stands watching the band & game. This book is very well written. & I’m here for all the black Girl Vampire a magic. Lol
All opinions are my own. Thank you Sharina Harris & Hear Our Voices Tour for my ARC !
Sign of the Slayer is a decently written YA novel. It very much reminded me of my days of youth spent watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The FMC Raven is the sole survivor after an attack on her high school marching bands bus. During this attack Raven discovers she has some very unique powers and meets a mystery “Pretty Boy” that helps her survive and find safety afterwards. She then has to say goodbye to life as she knew it, to enter an academy for vampire slayers. Here she learns the true nature of her powers and how to control and hone them. She is introduced to the upper echelon of slayers AND vampires, soon discovering that they can work together towards a common goal.
This is a dual POV story with good dialogue and banter between the characters. It has a fantastical plot IDEA with some nods to Egyptian mythology. There were some decent twists, plenty of action and even some flirting with a love interest. I feel like the pace started strong but then petered out. I was a tad disappointed and feel that the synopsis made this book sound more interesting than it actually ended up being.
I received an advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to review Sign of the Slayer. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Sign of the Slayer is perfect for Buffy the Vampire fans. When Raven's marching band is attacked after a football game, her life is changed forever. Not only has she lost her friends, but she also learns that she is a slayer. Her job is now to protect humankind from Vampires and other monsters that go bump in the night. When she is moved to the American Society of Slayers (AKA: ASS) she must navigate her new world and the rage that resides in herself. When a scientist and previous alchemist is murdered, the investigation sets of a chain of events that may change the history of humankind and slayers forever. Can Raven figure out who is behind this before it is too late? Can she survive partnering up with the future vampire king?
I enjoyed this book. The beginning was a little slow but once it picked up, I was hooked. I enjoyed finding out about Raven's powers and learning more about the American Society of Slayers. This book definitely had comedic moments that had me laughing and some references that Buffy the Vampire fans will enjoy. The chemistry between Raven and Khamari had me invested in their relationship even though they were fighting on opposite sides. I hope to see more of their interactions in the sequel. The ending left me with so many questions and was surprised to see that this will be a series (not exactly sure why I thought this would be a standalone). I am excited to see what will happen next and will be keeping an eye out for the sequel.
I received an advanced copy of this book, but my thoughts shared below are entirely my own.
This was a book I didn't know I needed and at times the main character seemed a lot like myself! Black saxophone playing marching band girl from the south, check check check. However, I have never seen or slayed a vampire, but after this book I would definitely sign up to join the Society!
The plot was action packed and the writing and language had me cracking up with laughter. I also appreciated the nods to Southern and Black culture and the historic elements woven throughout.
There was also a bit of romance, which I loved, but I truly loved the growth we saw in the main character. Raven goes from this unsure marching band girl to a strong and determined slayer and the transformation is something that any reader can embody and learn from.
I'm not usually a YA lover, but this action packed paranormal vampire romance was a great read. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
Thank you EntangledTeen for my complimentary arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Well that was a wild ride for sure. Rounding up to 4 stars. The beginning and ending of the book was a bit much (for me personally) I enjoyed the middle the most.
I liked all the pop culture references, but since I have not watched Buffy, I am sure a lot went over my head.
Great story and action, a bit of mystery and a lot of information to process. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book, because that ending!!
Quick Summary: A slayer adventure with attitude and spunk
My Review: Sign of the Slayer by Sharina Harris is an insanely thrilling paranormal novel. It features a fierce new slayer warrior by the name of Raven.
About the Book: A teenager with a history of “anger issues,” a love for high school band, and an atypical upbringing is blown away by her upgraded status in her new world experience. Vampires, monsters, and slayers, oh my! And did I forget to mention an unlikely tag team fated, mate situation?
My Final Say: Why is this not a Netflix series right now?! This book hit so hard, out of the gate. I loved the premise, the excitement, the plot twists, the characters, the word play…it was all good.
Other: I loved the shout outs and hidden praise, related to HBCUs. (You know!) I also jived with the band life vibe. (Much respect “til the day I die.” Don’t worry about it; my fellow band geeks get that reference. 🙌)
Sincere appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (Entangled Publishing, LLC, Entangled: Teen), and to NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to review this brilliant title. I look forward to reading more from this writer.
15 Thoughts…….. 1. High school/HBCU band vibes from the beginning! 2. Love all the pop-culture references! Blerd Content in full affect!!! 3. This reminds me of a cross between Vampire Huntress Legend Series by LA Banks and Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Very nostalgic! 4. Family/Friend ties are very important to the main character. 5. Things escalate quickly from the start. 6. Raven is literally a magical young black women with secret powers that are even more advanced than her peers. 7. Raven, you in trouble girl, with this vampire?!!! 8. This story veers very close to new adult paranormal. 9. Raven is a funny and relatable character. 10. There is an emphasis on mental health and self care that is apparent throughout the book. 11. The chapter development and magical system is nuance and complex but easy to follow once you get the handle of the plot. 12. There is disability representation in here that is pretty awesome. 13. The action/paranormal scene are very vivid and action-packed. You will be cheering for Raven throughout this book. 14. Raven has an amazing support system at school and also with her love interest, showing the importance of community and friendship. 15. This will be an AWESOME miniseries! There are a few actors/actresses that can really bring this story to life? U can’t seem to narrow down the choices. Put suggestions in comments? Amazing book and highly recommended. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ Thank you @hearourvoices your for letting me be apart of the cover reveal and book tour!!! #HearOurVoices #HOV #signoftheslayer
Thank you to Entangled Teen for an eARC to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was an interesting read. I enjoyed it, but it took me a while to get into it. I also found it felt really long. Some of the plot points seemed to be introduced only to be forgotten about for a large chunk of the book. I was expecting more of the Slayer Academy aspect, and I found it to be very minimal. I was also expecting more of Raven and Khamari being partnered to uncover secrets, and that also felt like it was only a minimal part of the story. Instead what happened was a bunch of different plots that seemed kind of crazy and intense all happening one after another. I think that the book could have benefited from having some of this cut out, and introduced later. The parts about Raven and Khamari’s history felt like they were thrown in just to create a past and tragedy. I liked their relationship and how it was developing until that was dropped. I also felt like both Raven and Khamari ran hot and cold and were back and forth a lot on their feelings and actions. Khamari’s POV was interesting, and I liked seeing more of the vampire powers and politics. I did like the way that the author wrote the action and fight scenes. I thought they were intense and exciting, and the book really picked up around the 70% mark for me and I couldn’t put it down. I also liked the way that the author explored the character dynamics and relationships. I thought Charlotte was intriguing, and I liked seeing Rose challenge Raven’s views. I wish that more had been explored with some of those characters, but I did like the secondary characters. Overall I liked this one and I’ll probably be reading the sequel to find out what happens with the Alexander plot and discover more secrets about slayers.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story follows 18 year old Raven, the saxophone section lead in the band. Following a football game the band’s bus is attacked by Vampires. After this happens Raven learns she is a slayer. She has to attend the American Slayer Society to train and learn how to protect humans against the vampires. Raven is out for revenge after that nights events. She learns how to conjure weapons through alchemy. She meets Prince Khamari , a vampire who works with the society. Raven wants to hate Khamari but she has an attraction to him that thwarts her plan of revenge on all vampires. This story was action packed after the slow start and I enjoyed the authors writing style. After reading this I need book 2 very very soon.
Thank you Hear Our Voices Tours, Entangled Publishing, LLC, Entangled: Teen and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Let’s talk about this #African-American Vampire Diaries but on the #BlackGirlMagic level!
Raven is the section leader for her high school band’s woodwind instrument section and there is a lot of jealousy (usual high school stuff) to go around. Based in Texas, highlighting Prairie View A&M (an HBCU) was paramount in the first few pages of the book. The perfect teen novel until a freak accident occurs that results in her band mates demise and she is the only one standing to defend herself (and the honor of her friends), which will she choose?
The character growth was PHENOMENAL and the soundtrack for this story wrote itself. The author continually referenced music and songs for the ultimate playlist through to the final page!
The writing itself was nothing short of a chef’s kiss. Harris uses the multi-point of view to gain balanced perspectives from her characters and to keep the story moving at a fantastic pace. Just when you think it’s over…it’s not! Love interests, family secrets, friendships, and enemies…all in a tale for the ages! This was truly amazing to read about a #Black slayer...and I can't wait to see what's next!
Thank you to Entangled Teen Publishing and Sharina Harris for this arc! All opinions are my own.
Sign of the Slayer was a fun and intriguing Modern day Buffy story. Our Main Character Raven (Texas) seems to have one tragic experience after another leading her up to accessing and realizing her powers as a Vampire slayer. Throughout the book we get to follow along as she struggles through personal issues and coping with her losses along with trying to adjust to her new life in the American Slayer Society and the dangers and complications that go along with it. She is hot headed and opinionated and while she annoyed me severely she also grasped my attention and I became quite attached to her growth throughout the book. Her relationships in the book were complicated and messy which I enjoyed but I felt like the book rushed through a few of the acceptance phases which made it a little hard to believe that she just accepts this world she knew nothing about without taking the time to be in denial. All in all I had a blast with this book and was hooked to the story and the characters we got to meet throughout it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley, Sharina Harris and Entangled Publishing for this ARC.
Sign of the Slayer will be book 1 in this series.
Raven and her group of marching band mates are on their way home from a game when they are attacked by vampires. This is when she finds out that she is a slayer and it is her job to protect humans and the rest of the world from vampires; but for that she needs to go study at the American Slayer Society (ASS) where she learns to conjure weapons using alchemy. On her journey for revenge, she meets a handsome stranger but also needs to lookout for an evil being looking to return.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book, I truly enjoyed it and was way better than I had expected. I loved the story and the concept of alchemy to use against vampires. There were moments where the little bit of story would get a little confusing or it was difficult trying to remember different sects of vampires and slayers.
Overall, this book made me really excited and at the end of each chapter I wanted more, which made it harder to put down!
For fans of: The Vampire Diaries, Buffy thr Vampire Slayer, Vampire Academy, Fullmetal Alchemist and Night World series'.

An excerpt of chapter 1 was included at the end of Cherish by Tracy Wolff and I was IMMEDIATELY hooked and BEGGED the author for an arc which she had mercy on me and gifted one to me (I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)
I LOVED THIS BOOK. I got Legendborn and Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes from this book and I mean that as the highest form of compliment. There were many points of reading this book where I was devastated that I didn't have other people to discuss this book with yet (and I'm already recruiting my book friends to read it in August so that I can geek out with them when they hit those points). I laughed, I swooned, I cried, I said, "I KNEW IT" and also "WHAT?!?! NO WAY!" Many of my questions were answered and I'm so excited to have even more questions answered as this series continues! I will absolutely keep reading this series and be bullying.... I mean encouraging.... my book friends to read it also.
sign of the slayer is a YA novel about vampires, being a teenager, and which are the hardest to deal with at the moment. when raven’s friends are attacked by a vampire, her slayer powers activate. she becomes a vampire-killing machine. she is then taken to the american slayer society’s school (hahaha ASS is their acronym).
i think this book was really interesting, but at the same time kind of hard to follow. the mythology and the lore behind the origins of vampires, the alchemists, all that stuff was incredible! but there was SO much of it that i got lost. the dialogue was absolutely hilarious, though. a couple of my favorite quotes: “of course the chosen one is a mediocre white man”, and my personal favorite, “you’re not sticking your dream peen inside of me.”
while this book wasn’t my favorite, i think the concept and writing were enough to make it a book i would recommend to anyone who loves YA fantasy with a bit of love and a lot of vampires sprinkled in.
Described as Fullmetal Alchemist meets Vampire Diaries, Sign Of The Slayer is the story of an 18 year old girl who loses her friends in a gruesome vampire attack and comes into her Slayer powers all in the same night. She is whisked away to an academy to train and develop her powers. There she will learn how to create weapons out of thin air, take down the big bad, and discover secrets about the academy itself.
Fans of vampire stories are sure to enjoy this. Humor is sprinkled throughout and the TV show Buffy is mentioned. There is also romance. The characters are interesting and distinct.
This is quite a long book as we spend most of our time at the academy learning along with the students. Some of the details about vampires and magic is confusing. I enjoyed the action scenes though.
