Henny Wiley has a problem...she's a bit of a collector. Well, collector might be an understatement. She's a full-blown hoarder!
Henny doesn't see it that way though. She considers herself a finder of lost treasures and the only thing Henny loves more than a great deal at a yard sale is to head to the parking lot of her favorite hobby store and search through their dumpster for bright new shiny things.
During one such dumpster dive, Henny makes a horrific discovery...the dead body of a young woman she had a soft spot for. Determined to find out who murdered her friend Henny drags along her recently deceased husband Walter (who obviously has problems of his own!) and her long-suffering sister Ida Mae as back-up.
But the murderer is paying attention and if Henny's not careful, the next body dying in a dumpster will be her own! Birdie is on a hunt that may claim the ultimate price—her own life.
Great start to what I hope will be a new series. Henny and her sister, Ida Mae, were a perfect representation of what sisters are like: they may bicker but you know they love each other and just want to see the other one happy. I loved the early morning yard sale shopping but really felt for Henny as her issue with hoarding becomes more of an issue and hope subsequent books will focus on how she comes to terms with this and her various losses. The mystery was interesting and while the guilty party was revealed somewhat earlier than I expected, it made the chase to prove it more fascinating. Looking forward to more from this author.
I received a copy from the author for an honest review.
Dumpster Dying is the first book in the Hazardous Hoarder Mystery series by Michelle Bennington and the first book I have read by this author. Michelle tackles some deep issues in this endearing tale such as the loss of a spouse, loneliness, and hoarding which she has done well.
This original and fun cozy mystery sees senior citizen Birdie as an amateur sleuth. This quirky character is a hoot and Michelle has written her so well. I often found myself laughing and sympathising at the mayhem going on with her.
With several murders, crimes to solve and finding a good treasure and her hoarder tendencies out of control and let’s not forget the ghost of her dead husband and her just as quirky older sister Oda Dean it’s a wonder Birdie has any time for anything. Birdie is all over the place, but she has a heart of gold and some issues, but she is a smart cookie and a clever sleuth.
The story has twists and turns on the trail to whodunnit along with tears and fears, sadness, heartache and loneliness. There are items to be found and treasured, secrets to be uncovered, and those who are not always as they seem.
I was a little disappointed with the ending. Even though the story revealed the perpetrators, and the murders were solved it felt as though there should have been more, but it felt like it just ended.
I really did enjoy the story though and I look forward to reading more of Birdie and Oda Dean.
If you like a good cozy mystery with quirky characters, then you will enjoy this one.
Dumpster Dying is the first book in the Hazardous Hoarder Mystery series by Michelle Bennington. It has an amateur sleuth, along with several murders and crimes committed. The two main characters—Birdie and her older sister Oda Dean—are senior citizens, adding another dimension to the story.
Birdie not only dumpster dives and goes to yard sales but is also a hoarder who sees, hears, and smells the ghost of her husband, who has been dead for five years at their home.
There are plenty of clues sprinkled throughout and a trail to solve the murders and more dastardly crimes committed in their small town in Kentucky.
As the story unfolds, we get to know the good guys and the bad guys, too. And Birdie seems to piece things together quicker than the sheriff and the others on the police force. She definitely pays attention to details as well as her surroundings but isn’t always the best judge of others. She and her sister have affection for each other but also call each other out on ways to show their love.
The story has twists and turns as we try to figure out whodunnit in this cozy mystery. There are tears, fear, heartache, sadness, treasures, secrets, lots of food, and people who are not as they seem. The story tied up loose ends to solve the murders and get the bad guys but ended abruptly. I was definitely expecting a little bit more. There are a lot of pertinent details on the cover, and it fits the story.
This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Bennington, and I look forward to reading more of her books.
If you like cozy mysteries with a ghost to boot, Dumpster Dying could be the start of a new series you may enjoy. I definitely can’t wait to be back to see what Birdie and Oda Dean are up to next.
I just want to have pie and coffee with my favorite sweet senior citizen Birdie from book one of the new cozy murder mystery series Dumpster Dying by my new auto buy mystery author Michelle Bennington.
Birdie retired early still dealing with the grief of losing her beloved husband Walter five years ago. She finds solace in finding unwanted treasures at yard sales, convenience stores and the occasional dumpster. Her sister Oda Dean thinks she has a serious hoarding problem. Birdie thinks she is giving a home to treasures. She can control when they leave and will not let them be taken from her like Walter and precious others she has lost.
When her favorite convenience store clerk, Jenna, goes missing Birdie takes it upon herself to investigate since the police are understaffed and think Jenna probably ran off with a man.
As Birdie juggles Oda Dean trying to clean her house, sneaking out at night to dumpster dive, dealing with some feelings for new church member Neville, discovering Jenna may not have been so innocent and scary suspects in her disappearance, she also has to deal with Walter's ghost hanging around the house.
The mystery of Jenna gets quite intense but it's Birdie who is the star of this often tender story. The writer has created a strong, stubborn, sturdy woman who is trying to do the right thing while dealing with profound grief and loneliness.
Now it's not all tension and sadness. There are moments that had me snorting with laughter like Walter trying to disrupt Birdie going out with Neville and Birdie beating up a bad guy with her pocketbook on the side of the road once the cops have cuffs on him. The image lives rent free in my head.
If you are a fan of Murder She Wrote, Hoarders, and unique stories this book is worth the dumpster dive.
I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
DUMPSTER DYING by Michelle Bennington The First Hazardous Hoarding Mystery
Birdie Harper lives alone with her treasures. And the ghost of her dead husband. Collecting all manner of things from garage sales and dumpster dives, Birdie finds it painful to throw anything out, though she will gift some things she finds, like the ceramic angel that was a perfect present for Jenna, the young cashier at the local convenience store. When Jenna goes missing Birdie knows something is terribly wrong. With an older sister trying to boss her around and a possible suitor from church, Birdie is determined to uncover the truth behind Jenna's disappearance-no matter the cost.
I really enjoyed my first trip into Birdie Harper's world. I love the realness that is Birdie. She's gone through a lot and is coping the best way she knows how. She's determined, funny, feisty, and kind. Only one thing bothered me a bit. Continually described as an old lady, I was stunned when I discovered she's just a year older than me! In any case, the mystery is intriguing and I love Birdie's determination to help. Excellent character dynamics and a distinct sense of place really drew me in.
One of the things I appreciate most about DUMPSTER DYING is the way in which the hoarding aspect is portrayed. Approached with care and understanding, it is also very realistic from the tingling and obsessive thoughts to the condition of Birdie's home as well her emotions in regard to it all. Birdie is a hoarder, but she is not a caricature.
DUMPSTER DYING is a unique mystery that incorporates timely real life issues making it an outstanding first entry in a new series.
Dumpster Dying is the first book in the Hazardous Hoarding Mystery series by Michelle Bennington. It is a fun, madcap, cozy mystery woven around some very interesting, quirky characters. With a whodunnit feel, crime and investigation, humour, drama, emotion, paranormal elements, and more- made this book a very entertaining read. This is the first book that I have read by this author, so I really wasn’t sure of what to expect from her work- but after reading this I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of her books going forward. Birdie, Walter, and Oda Dean really brought this story to life- and it certainly wouldn’t have been the same without their quirky personalities. Interwoven through the story are also some deeper subject matter- things such as mental health issues, hoarding, grief, loneliness, acceptance, loss of a loved one, and the afterlife. There was a lot more to Birdie than first meets the eye, and that comes down to Ms. Bennington’s ability to cleverly craft complex characters. I felt for Birdie, laughed at the antics- while connecting and investing in her and the outcome of the story. Even though the threads of the story were tied up and the ‘mystery’ solved- I was left feeling like everything ended too abruptly- leaving me a little ‘deflated’. But, I did enjoy the mystery, overall, and am intrigued by what Book #2 might hold. Happy reading…
Birdie Harper is a woman on a mission, she is on a mission to increase her collection of objects, so she goes to yard sales regularly with her finding treasures, or at least treasures to her, but her favourite thing is to go dumpster diving, she has her favourite stores and will go out in the middle of the night and find things she can use in projects, or to decorate her home. Unfortunately for Birdie, her sister Oda Dean doesn't see her treasures the same way, she sees them as trash, rubbish which is becoming a possible health hazard and is always calling Birdie a hoarder, and this annoys Birdie to no end.
One night while she is diving, she finds something more than she bargained for, a dead body and it is someone Birdie was rather fond of, a young woman in the prime of her life. As Birdie relays all the information she can to the police, but also to her unfortunate husband, who just so happens to be a ghost, so he cannot offer any comfort, but can lend an ear and maybe even some help?
This discovery leads Birdie into an investigation of her own as she tries to find out what happened to her friend, she is also determined that Oda Dean and Walter are going to help her, but will she be able to find out who the culprit is before her dumpster diving days are over? This is a cozy mystery with ghostly aid which will keep you guessing as Birdie uncovers clues, information and danger while keeping up with her unusual hobbies.
Birdie Harper and her older sister Oda Dean Spurlock have a Saturday tradition of enjoying garage and yard sales. Birdie also has another tradition of dumpster diving. For many, it is unwanted junk or simply trash. However, for Birdie, the retrieved items become gifts after a little TLC, with most becoming part of her treasures.
I loved Birdie and Oda Dean. Oda Dean is married. Birdie is a widow with her husband Walter, a ghost still checking in after five years to ensure the love of his life is okay, offering his commentary and sometimes advice Birdie would prefer Walter keep to himself.
The author weaves the subjects of grief, hoarding, and human trafficking in the cozy mystery with sensitivity and thoughtful writing.
Copy edit errors were distracting, as all are, but the characters and twists of the mystery kept me reading. The curiosity to ponder was a connection to the opening story of another series written by the author. As I read "Devil’s Kiss" (A Small Batch Mystery, Book 1) a few weeks ago, I enjoyed that Oda Dean shared news of friends from that story with her sister. It is perplexing, though, in "Dumpster Dying," that mention of the main character is said to have a new job at a distillery with a different distillery name than in "Devil’s Kiss." I could understand the name being different if "Devil’s Kiss" was published after "Dumpster Dying." However, the opposite is true. "Dumpster Dying" was published after "Devil’s Kiss," and both were published last year.
I’ll continue reading both series as I enjoyed both sleuths at different stages of their lives in the beautiful setting of small-town life in Kentucky.
"Dumpster Dying" by Michelle Bennington is a quirky and fun mystery novel that follows the misadventures of Birdie Harper, a self-proclaimed treasure hunter and hoarder. The story takes an unexpected turn when Birdie stumbles upon the dead body of a young woman she had grown fond of.
The character of Birdie is well-developed and instantly likable. Her obsession with collecting forgotten items adds depth to her personality and adds an interesting layer to the plot. Additionally, the inclusion of her deceased husband, Walter, as a spirit who accompanies her on her investigation adds a unique and humorous twist.
The author does a commendable job of creating a suspenseful and compelling mystery. The pacing is appropriate, with enough twists and turns to keep readers engaged throughout. As Birdie dives deeper into her investigation, her determination to find the murderer is portrayed convincingly, and the suspense builds up effectively.
However, there are some aspects of the book that could use improvement. The resolution of the mystery feels a bit rushed, and certain plot points are not fully explored or developed. While it may have its flaws, the book is still worth picking up for fans of cozy mysteries and those looking for a light-hearted and fun read.
What a fun and enjoyable cozy mystery and I love that the characters trying to solve the mystery. Dumpster Dying is Book 1 in the Hazardous Hoarding Mystery and the author is also new to me. I was intrigued by the snyposis and cover of the book so I decided to dive right in.
Birdie and her sister Oda Jean have a love for a good bargain when yard sales call their names....especially knowing that Birdie also has a fascination of dumpster diving and a little bit of hoarding. When Birdie befriends a young lady name Jenna, Birdie loves to visit the convenient store that Jenna works at. Jenna ends up going missing one day with no clues to what happened, Birdie will stop at nothing to try and find her friend. With Birdie's late husband haunting her a bit and her sister Oda Jean trying to clear out her house room by room that is a little overrun by bargain treasures...will Birdie find a out any truths the Jenna's disappearance?
This is a really great read and I enjoyed the characters especially Birdie, she has my heartstrings. I am already looking forward to more in this series and from the author!
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
This is such a fun start to a new cozy mystery series! We meet Birdie an older lady who is a little bit of a hoarder who loves to dumpster dive and search yard sales for hidden treasures that others would throw out. While maintaining her hoard in a small Kentucky town the ghost of her husband lives with her providing company in her widowed years even if others cannot see or hear him. This sets things up for quite the story I must say and adding the disappearance of a woman she considers to be the daughter she never had just ramps things up. Determined to find out what happened she starts asking questions which ultimately lead her to danger. Can she figure out what happened before it is too late? You will have to read it to find out. A great start to a new series that is sure to delight cozy fans as well as those looking for an older protagonist. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Dumpster Dying (A Hazardous Hoarding Mystery Book 1) by Michelle Bennington. This is such a good cozy mystery and I can't wait to read the next book. Its the story of Senior Citizens Sisters Birdie & Oda Dean and their crazy adventures. Birdie is somewhat of a collector, well in reality she is a hoarder. She loves to go to garage sales and look in dumpsters for treasures. While dumpster diving one day she finds the body of a young lady she is friends with. Devastated she decides she will solve the murder faster than the authorities. While trying to solve this murder she ends up with more bodies on her hand. Between keeping her sister in line, finding treasures and even showing some interest in the new man at church does Birdie have time to solve these murders before more occur? Such a fun mystery that will keep you flipping the pages until the end.
This is such a fun cozy mystery that I really enjoyed. It is such a fast paced book and it was easy for me to read it in one sitting. This is book 1 in the new Hazardous Hoarding Mystery series and I really cannot wait to read more. These characters were so much fun and I really truly loved the quirks that they had. Birdie was such a unique character who definitely collects things and surprisingly loves to dumpster dive. However, this story takes a turn when she discovers the body of someone she was fond of. While she begins the investigation she is accompanied by the spirit of her husband who has since passed on. This fit right in to the quirky story and honestly really made me love Birdie even more. I cannot wait for the next book because I loved Birdie so very much and I want to see what other adventures she and Walter get into.
This was shall a fun read I know weird to say about a cozy mystery book. The main characters are older characters with some corky characteristics. Birdie Harper is the main character which is a hoarder and sees her late husband, Walter. Walter pops up when Birdie is getting out of hand. Then there Birdie’s sister Oda Dean that’s a busybody in Birdie life. Jenna goes missing from the local store. Birdie has grown fawn of Jenna so she set out to find out what happened to her. Follow Birdie on her journey to find the truth. Can’t wait for Birdie next adventure and see what Walter and Oda Dean have up their sleeve for Birdie.
(Due to uncontrollable circumstances there are name changes in next book. Birdie is Henny and Oda Dean is Ida Mae)
I really enjoyed this book. When I first started reading this, my first thought was "this would be a very good episode for Hallmarks Garage Sale Mystery"
Birdie is a hot mess that doesn't hold anything back. She is ornery and sometimes mean to her sister and Walter. I won't spoil anything about Walter. He's awesome.
Birdie really does care about others and she takes a liking to Jenna at the Blue Mart. Jenna ends up missing and the story takes off as Birdie and and her sister head out to find what happened to her and all the others girls that come up dead or missing.
There is a lot of action and trying to figure who done it.
Dumpster Dying is a mystery that drew me in originally by it’s cover art. It did not take long before I was pulled into the storyline by the author’s style of writing and enjoyable main character. I really enjoyed the wit and quirky nature of Birdie and the dynamics of her relationships. This book was fun and easy to read with rich imagery, I could imagine being in Birdie’s collection filled home and her fear of losing what comes with it. There was a good balance of action and light hearted humor throughout the book and it made for a great weekend read. I look forward to hopefully reading more from this author in the near future.
Dumpster Dying ended up being far different than what I expected. I chose to read it based on the cover art, and it exceeded my expectations. It follows 2 elderly ladies, Birdie and her sister Oda Dean through a series of excitement. Birdie is a hoarder and goes dumpster diving for treasures. The search for a missing girl they knew, uncovered a whole slew of things I didn't expect. Birdie is a spunky old lady and reminds me of my grandmother. I am glad to see the book is the start of a series because there was a lot left unsaid. I want to know why Walter can't move on, and the mystery surrounding his death. I also want to see if Birdie can change her ways and let go of her treasures.
Loved this book! I’ve read quite a few cozy mysteries and I have to say this is my new favorite! While many books in the genre follow a simpler template and don’t go very deep with the main character, this one did. Michelle Bennington handled very real issues with sensitivity, grace, and humor. I absolutely adored Birdie—connected with, sympathized, and rooted for—and enjoyed everyone else in this wonderful cast. The writing was beautiful, mystery was engaging, and the setting was perfectly cozy. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series! Highly recommend.
I enjoyed this read! I have a weird fascination with the show Hoarders and I like mysteries - so why not try this one out?! I love Birdie - she is the best character! She is fiesty and funny - with a sense of determination. I can picture her and her sister out at garage sales every weekend - getting excited to find the next treasure. I love that her husband is a ghost and is sticking around to keep her company. This story is the tale of Birdie and her sister trying to solve the mystery of Jenna's disappearance.
Birdie is a widow who is having trouble letting go of her husband and useless items that she continues to collect from dumpsters, yard sales, etc. Birdie has lost a lot in her life and finds herself attached to a young woman whom she barely knows. When the young woman, Jenna, disappears, Birdie decides she must find her. What follows is a whole story that is unfortunately true to life. This book kept me turning pages to find out what would happen next.
3.5 rounded up first of all I think the sisters names got changed from the blurb here to the physical copy I got. not necessarily a bad thing, just thought it was odd. it was a cute story. I liked that it was semi local (story took part in various parts around Lexington ,KY, and I'm on Ohio) and that church was important to the fmc. the only part that mildly annoyed me was so much mentioning of her hoarding, even though I know it's a real life problem.
One man's trash, is another man's treasure. Or, a dead body as in this novel. This is a suspenseful and compelling cozy mystery. Self-proclaimed hoarder along with trying to solve the murder of someone close to her makes a humorous plot. Dumpster Dying is a compelling mystery that keeps you turning the pages. You'll enjoy this quirky mystery
Absolutely stunning and suspenseful. So relatable as well!! I felt like I was hanging out with My grandma Minnie and Aunt Lois!! Had me hanging on until the very end!! So we'll written and such a great read!! Looking forward to reading more from Michelle😁
Such an endearing read, especially the nods to Kentucky if you’re a local. Love how this book adds some humor but also touches on deep/personal topics at the same time. Great start to what I hope is a long series! 😊

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, suspense, mystery , and a little bit of humor added. Reminded me a little of cozy mystery, such good book to enjoy around this time of year. Characters, storyline was great, got a kick out of the title and the cover. Quick read finished it within a couple hours. I give this book 5 stars

This is book 1 in The Hazardous Hoarding Mysteries series. I found this cozy mystery really unique and entertaining. It is the first book that I have read by this author and i am looking forward to reading more in this series. The author does a great job with the characters. They are all fun and charming and a little eccentric in their own way which is what makes them unique. In this story we first meet Birdie and her sister Oda Dean. Both of them love a good deal and love looking around for bargains. Birdie considers herself a collecter but to the outside world she would be considered a horder. One of the things Birdie loves is looking inside dumpsters however her favourite past time comes to a horrible end when she discovers the body of a young woman who she considered her friend. Now she is on a mission along with her sister Oda and her dead husband (in spirit form) to find out who killed her friend and why. As Birdie starts investigating and trying to get to the bottom of things she places a target on her back. Will she become the next body in a dumpster?
The characters of Birdie and Oda are so well written they literally jump off the page. Their relationship and the humour between them makes this story engaging and a fun read. Add to the mix Birdie's departed husband and it is a great entertaining mix. There are some deeper issues such as lonelness and the loss of a loved one which are dealt within this story as well.
