I live in the lap of luxury. Or so everyone believes.
Existing in a world where politics rule and keeping up appearances is a sport is far from what I want… but no one cares.
My father’s political ambitions take precedence. I am nothing more than the forgotten daughter. Unloved. Broken. Alone.
Until Shane swoops into my life and turns my world upside down. He sets me free from the carefully crafted façade, exposing the deceit and abuse that held me captive.
He is my drug of choice and may be the reason my life implodes.
SHANE
Love doesn’t exist. In my world, all that matters is power. As the heir to New York’s most powerful mafia empire, people are disposable.
I’m a Vergoossen, and nothing and no one can ever change me… Until I meet her.
Melanie is fragile like a rose and fierce like its thorns. She’s the kind of woman I swore didn’t exist, and that’s why I can’t let her go. But there’s one major obstacle I can’t ignore.
Her father is my family’s sworn enemy, and for that, she must pay the price.
I won’t follow through, but it’s only a matter of time until someone does.

Resons why you should not follow Booktok . There's no character development. It felt like cringe erotica written for kids. Mostly like an wattpad story. The style and structure is neither impressive nor the characters were strongly built. I understand the fast pace romances where love just happens but it had no connection with that. In short it didn't make any sense. Authors should learn the craft of writing first. Good try. Don't take any hard feelings. Keep on writing!
I read this when it first came out on episode and absolutely loved it. Reading this novel now and as I am older it was so nice as its more mature and had more depth, it was really enjoyable. One thing I wasn’t completely the biggest fan of was the constant smut… it started to get very repetitive so I began getting bored… if you’re someone who likes a lot of sex scenes then that won’t bother you, me personally I don’t mind them but in moderation and fit with purpose. I understand both the characters are essentially intoxicated with one another but that can be expressed in other ways other than sex. I also didn’t really like some of the cringey lines they would say to describe their feeling/ express love. Overall I did really enjoy the book and cannot wait for the second one!

Swooning over Shane Vergoossen. The male lead is the kind of man that makes you want to hop on a motorbike, ditch your engagement party in the process, and risk your entire existence for the addictive thrill and affection only he can give you. Who doesn't want a man so vigilant and chivalrous, willing to risk everything for his woman as yet so ruthless and wicked for his enemies. Goodness. I loved Shane’s cold and decisive attitude. He starts as a villain, gradually realizing his heart is tainted by his father's desire for vengeance. Bonus points that it isn't the MC who changes him, but it is his very own development. I liked the process of physical attraction that blindsides both of the protagonists' ways of thinking which causes them both to act recklessly at times, altering into something deeper as the book progresses.
If I had to complain about something, I would suggest building up some scenes as I felt a hunger for more of the characters’ feelings but knowing that it was the author’s debut novel I can turn a blind eye to it as the book itself is deeply engaging and the author has great potential.
I cannot wait for the second book as this one ends on a killer cliffhanger!
