He’s the one man I cannot fall for, and the only man I want. Now my kryptonite is in the inner sanctum of HEAT.
As an elite sharpshooter, I was one of the Army’s most valuable weapons. But as a civilian and a new recruit in the off-the-books spy agency HEAT, I have a lot to prove. Which is why when sexy playboy Chase Wilder bungles my first solo mission, he moves into the top five on my personal enemies list.
But when his new business associate turns out to be my number one enemy and HEAT’s most wanted, I’m stuck with Chase as my temporary partner.
We’re undercover in an organization of mercenary spies who will do anything for the highest bidder. Taking down the bad guys is only one of my problems, though, because I’m being pulled into Chase’s orbit and some days I don’t even know if I want to break free.
In the world of espionage, we keep our enemies close, but I need to keep Chase as far away as possible. Because every time we’re alone together, my heart overrules my head, which is one risk I can’t take.
And if our jacked-up hearts start calling the shots, someone will get killed.
The Agents of HEAT series is perfect for readers who like Killing Eve, Alias, and Nikita.
I spend most of my time writing, reading, and binge-watching great stories, especially those full of romance and adventure. When I’m not immersed in fictional worlds, I pursue physical challenges like studying Krav Maga and trying to achieve the perfect crow pose. I also drink too much coffee, not enough red wine, and just the right amount of bourbon.
I live with my fabulous family, which includes my spoiled and demanding overlords, collectively known as The Cats.
This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the second book in the Agents of HEAT series. I have read the third book in this series, but I have not read the first book in this series yet. Yes, I know I am reading it backwards. I think these books can be read as standalone books without any problems. I really love the characters in this book and this series so much, and the main characters in this book I loved getting to know them more. They were part of the third book, but they were just secondary characters. This book has a ton of action and suspense, and the romance was steamy and sweet. I really enjoyed the mix of action, suspense, and romance. Great Read and Great Characters. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher or author (Harper Cross) via Booksirens, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
I received a free ARC of BABY CALL THE SHOTS and I enjoyed it immensely.
I started with this book, which is the second in the Agents of HEAT series, so it took me a while to recap on who is who and what is going on.
That being said, I loved the action. It felt like I was watching a spy/FBI/organization movie that wasn't as cheesy but still had a solid romance.
There was plenty of action and all the action scenes or language was explained in terms I'd understand. I liked the team and how they worked and it was very cool.
The romance wasn't my favorite thing, though I can't put my finger on why. Maybe because it came up suddenly and while they had plenty of physical chemistry, the book was lacking in evidence of more than just lust.
While I highly enjoyed this book I don't think I'd read the others, mainly because if they were written similarly I wouldn't be able to handle so much of this all at once.
We met Mai Lee in the last book, as Derek's hand-picked successor as Cynthia's team partner. I loved her then, especially how strong and feisty she was, and how quickly she was able to accept Cynthia once she got to know her. In this book, she's a lot more focused and lethal than her partner, probably due to the fact that the target of their current mission is someone she has a personal vendetta against. Not that the rest of the team knows that, however.
I adored the way Chase "chased" her for the romance, gently yet determined to show her they can be more than a ONS. And despite his lack of training as an agent, he was more than competent to hold his own in the field. Mai didn't quite know what to do with him at first, and I loved how she came to appreciate his own set of skills and respect him as an equal partner.
There were a few minor details that contradicted the facts as stated in the first book, but those probably would be obvious to someone who didn't read the two books in quick succession. One thing that I really admired the author for is how, even though this book also is told from only the female lead's POV, she still gave Mai a completely different voice than the one she wrote for Cynthia. Mai is definitely more confident, more sure of herself.
I also loved that we got to know more about the remaining team members and their personal lives. It was easy to see them working together so well, almost like an ad hoc family who supported each other through all the ups and downs. And with this mission holding such a personal focus for Mai, there are plenty of ups and downs.
I loved the HEA, and I adore Chase's playfulness with Mai. I hope to see more of them together in the future books. If you love spy capers and romance mixed together, you can't go wrong with this delightful series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Wow. This book opens up so many new possibilities for the series. I was already starting to fall in love with the enigma that is Mai in the previous book, and now that I've gotten the chance to live inside her head for the length of this one, I love her even more. I also really enjoyed that we got to see some of Chase’s perspective about his life, his family, and his accident. To be honest, I'm a little surprised that Mai held so many of her cards so close to the vest after watching what her partner went through doing the same things during their last mission. I was kind of frustrated to witness that and realize she hadn't Learned from those earlier mistakes. But, other than that one little niggling complaint, I loved everything else about this book. I can't wait to see what the next adventure brings for these agents of HEAT. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.
Mai was a sniper for the military and now she is now with HEAT . This has a strong female character. I like how Mai is not only an alpha female but has a tender side as well. A wonderful action plot, with spies, Generals, from not liking to something deeper. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to make of Chase Wilder the first time we see him in Mai’s scope and then his easy going golden boy from the presents to her parents. But as Mai and Chase are forced to work together to ring down a bigger enemy, one that is supposedly headed by someone from Mai’s past, it becomes increasingly difficult for Mai to keep her secrets from her HEAT team mates. Especially when one of her team mates is Chase’s older brother and her partner’s lover, sit looks more and more like Mai is leading Chase into unnecessary danger. Chase grew on me in his own way, his actions and attitude towards Mai and won me over. The pace and suspense was good interspersed with some sexy times. I also liked that the main character was an Asian woman with high ranked military parents and chose to drop her last name due to pressure from such recognition.
As the second book in a series, I was able to follow all the characters and the storyline without having read the first book.
I received an ARC of this from BookSirens and assume all the editing errors have been corrected in the final version of the book so I won’t deduct stars for that.
This book wasn’t for me but it might be for you! I didn't read the first book and felt a bit lost because I didn’t know the characters well enough so I’d recommend reading book one before reading this one.
From the book description, I wish we got to see Mai more in action. She was apparently an extraordinary sniper and “the best there is” and I wish we got to see more of that. I wish we got to see how badass she really can be.
I didn’t feel Mai’s and Chase’s instant connection and it threw me off how nice and open Chase was.
In other news, as someone who is Vietnamese I’m happy to see some representation in here. Lol and can I say how happy I was when I read that Chase heated the Pho up on the stove and not the microwave? I would have been so mad if that wasn’t the case. I think there was a sentence though that said “I know a place that has a fabulous pho” and I thought the “a” before “fabulous” was unnecessary. Lol I have also never heard someone describe pho as fabulous before and that threw me off too. Lee is also not a Vietnamese name, her last name should have been Le or Ly.

Great second outing in a high action, romantic series. I really loved Book One in this series as it was a thrilling adventure story, loaded with action and Baby Call the Shots is no different, the story kicks off in the middle of an op and the action continues throughout the book to the gripping finale. This starts as Mai’s first solo mission, one that gets screwed up by Chase, the boss of the company that provides her cover; and brings her back into the orbit of a former lover / current foe. There’s plenty of humour and lots of witty banter moving this story along at a cracking pace and scorching hot sex as these two burn up the pages whenever they get together – Mai and Chase, not Mai and the former lover / current foe! It's a great mix of exciting adventure in their world of espionage and steamy romance, well blended into an easy to read book that will have you turning the pages and staying up late into the night to find out what happens next. There’s one to go in this series about this HEAT team and I can’t wait!!
This is the first book I have read written by this author, hence the first book of this series I have read.
I found the first few chapters confusing trying to work out who-did-what & who “belonged to who”. Once I got passed then, I settled in and read whenever I could.
Mai Lee is from a military family, very tall and a sharp shooter, Chase is her brother’s boss (oops). Circumstances throw the two together and so the story begins.
Both characters are “flawed” (i.e. human), have secrets that the have not told anyone else and bring out the best in each other.
The story is well written, full of twists and turns, serious and amusing as well as action of various types. It’s an easy book to read.
I will now go back and read the first book of the HEAT series, before the next one is published.

I received this book as an ARC for an honest and voluntary review. This is the second book of the series, and all can be read as a stand alone. However, I felt like I was missing part of the story, and truthfully based upon the premise of book 1, this wasn't covered there. It was what had happened previously in Mai's life while she was in the military. There were bread crumbs, but I felt like I was missing the whole story that doesn't come to light until 3/4 way through the book. There was action and suspense and an intense attraction between Mai and Chase Wilder, the brother of one of their agents, and the person that heads their legitimate business which funds their black ops business of HEAT.
This is book two in The An Agents of Heat Romantic Suspense Series and it is Chase and Mai's story. Mai's is a female sniper and she work's for The Spy Agency Heat, she is feisty, fierce and takes no messing from anyone but when she has to work with Chase she is not happy as he is already on her hit list for getting in the way of her mission. The attraction and intense chemistry between Chase and Mai is so strong but she has a job to do and nobody not even Chase will get in the way. This book has twists and turns along with action, suspense, danger and intense situations but but how will it all end and what will the outcome be for Mai and Chase. I really enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to reading more book's in the future.
Received as an ARC and leaving my honest review. Although each book is a standalone there is some interconnectivity as the characters belong to the HEAT Alpha team. This books picks up after book 1 and focuses on Mai and Chase. You don't have to read the earlier book to enjoy this one though, as there is enough background given so you know who's who and the purpose and structure of the team.
Similar to book 1, there is an element of suspense and intrigue that kept me glued to the pages. There are also funny moments and steamy moments that flowed well with the overall plot and pacing. The series is proving itself to be interesting and I'm keen to find out what happens next.
A romantic suspense that keeps you intrigued as the alpha females of HEAT, an international underground spy organization, try to figure out what Malone is up to. Mia has her dream job as a sniper but her secret could jeopardize her job and reputation. Chase and Mia have an explosive chemistry between them which is making it hard for her to concentrate on the mission at hand. Evil lurks in the shadows waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike putting not only Chase's life in danger but others as well.
loved it !!! love this series !!! love Mai and Chase... this is their story... a black ops Heat action packed drama... Mai is new to the team.. she has to prove herself... Chase is the brother of one of the members and heads the legit business that funds Heat... he messed up her first mission... now, they have to work together.. his new business partner is enemy numero uno... secrets and lies... twists and more twists...

He messed with her mission, and she’s not happy. When she finds out who he was consorting with to mess it up, she puts him on her hit list. Being in the way at the wrong time couldn’t be helped. So he’s willing to play spook to help get things resolved. Now these two have to work side by side, and try to ignore the chemistry they have to get a resolution. Easier said than done, especially when the man rocks her world. Now she’s just hoping she can get him through without to much damage. I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.
"Baby Call the Shots" is the next installment in the Agents of Heat series. While it can be enjoyed as a stand alone book, it is much better having read the previous books in the series. There is serious chemistry between the main characters and the story flows. The suspense, along with the twists will keep you turning the pages. I enjoy this series and I am looking forward to the next book. This book left us with so many possibilities.

This is the second book in the HEAT series but can be read as a stand-alone. Again Cross has a strong ass-kicking female protagonist narrating the events. The pace was nice and fast and there was plenty of steam between Mai and Chase. There wasn’t quite as much action this time but it was still enjoyable reading about the current mission. More hints of information were given about other members of the team that sparks the readers curiosity and eagerness for future instalments. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from BookSirens. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

It was okay, a little slow for me. Mai is a female sniper who is a member of HEAT. She is placed on a mission with her fake boss, Chase. Chase is being pursued by a international company of mercenaries with ties to powerful people. Their mission is to uncover who the boss is.
The action scenes hold your attention but the story in between lags a little.
I loved this book! It was really great! Chase comes to HEAT but it was much to the chagrin of Mia, the resident sharpshooter who had something to prove. I loved the drama but pardon the pun, the heat between Chase and Mia. Their connection even though initially they didn't get on, was explosive and hot. I loved the intrigue and mystery they have to solve. This book was so good and I highly recommend it. This was an ARC and this is my honest review.
Mai Chase I really enjoyed this book and will most certainly read more from this author. We follow HEAT operative, Mai, this time as she works with civilian, Chase. Based on past experience, she doesn't want to get involved but Chase is very persuasive. I liked Mai and Chase's relationship and how they are not one-dimensional characters. I enjoyed reading about their past but also really love Chase's sensitivity and drive for Mai. HOTTT.
Baby Call the Shots Harper Cross Chase and Mai are well written characters. The story line is also well written and flows smoothly. I enjoyed the book but I felt I was left struggling to understand why she held back so much until the last part of the book. I was still a great read just wished I knew more sooner.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a fun romantic suspense and I read it super fast. I liked the intrigue and drama.
The synopsis reads a little more dramatic that the actual book but I still enjoyed it.
I did think the character development was a bit light and I wished it was a dual POV. I didn’t understand how they could be in love after about a week. Their interactions seemed superficial to me and mostly driven by lust.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another great story for the HEAT agents! There were times when I wished I had Chase's POV (this is singular POV) but there was always something keeping me reading and quickly forgetting what I wanted in his side, or it was pretty much answered anyway from Mia's POV. These are wonderful characters, including a strong female lead and a sweet guy, even though he had a daredevil streak.
*I am leaving an honest and voluntary review after receiving this book as an ARC.
Enjoyed this romantic suspense filled with spicy, independent and fierce alpha females. Loved this spin on ABC agencies and the underlying tension of coworkers wanting to be more than colleagues. Looking forward to the next book in this series!

In this next book in the series, I got to see Chase and Mia in action. This book didn’t disappoint in regards the action packed in, and the attraction between these two was awesome. As they both try to stay safe, danger surrounds them and it is a true test on if they truly belong together. Fun read
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I liked this a lot. Gritty, action packed, strong women characters who could hold their own in private security. Mai is so fiesty and I love that Chase brings out her softer, vulnerable side as she feels safe with him. Recommended.

I received a copy of this book through Hidden Gems and I voluntarily chose to review it. This one was different but good. This is a well written story with awesome characters. I encourage you to take your time with this one you don't want to miss any of the action. I do believe you will enjoy this one.
Fast paced action packed story full of strong confident men and women with mad skills. The characters are well written and I enjoyed the combination of focussed team work on a mission and easy fun banter on downtime. Chase and Mai were a great combination and I Ioved her family dynamics. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I didn't read the first book in the series, so it took me a moment to familiarize myself with the various characters. The book does a decent job blending intrigue, danger, and instant romance together. Chase and Mai navigate the potential minefields of secrecy, mayhem and mercenaries to find their way to each other.
