In a deserted park on a cold winter day, 27-year-old Kathryn Frasier is training for a marathon when she discovers a gold watch on a fencepost. Sensing that it was deliberately left for her to find, she sets out to solve the mystery behind the watch, but her orderly life is turned upside-down when it leads her to a dark family secret and a suspicion that her parents' recent deaths may not have been an accident.
Thrown into the hunt for a possible killer, Kathryn peels back layer after layer of cryptic clues, and encounters an extraordinary cast of characters, including an actress with a talent for disguises, a politician with a secret of his own, and a handsome businessman who shows a sudden romantic interest in Kathryn.
But is the search for the truth worth risking her own life?
Y’all, this book was SO GOOD. Some of you have probably heard that I was really hesitant to read this story at first. I have a tendency to judge books by their covers- if a book has a really pixelated / low quality cover, it really turns me off, because cheap book cover = cheap writing and amazing book cover = perfect writing, right? (which, btw, is not true, folks, as illustrated by this example)
Anyway, running off on a little book cover ratrant. I loved this story! The writing was absolutely amazing- I haven’t read writing like this that flowed so well and literally forced me to turn the page. 😛 Well done, Ms. Dibianca! I’ve also been reading a lot of suspense novels recently and this book is right up there with my favorites. All the clues and twists kept me on the edge of my chair, and let me also mention the characters????! Cece’s so eccentric but so so interesting and like wow she put such an interesting dimension into the story. 100% would recommend reading the book just for Cece. xD I loved that Kathryn was training for a marathon, too! I’m a very active athlete and really related to that aspect of her.
Overall, I’d hands-down recommend this! The only part that I didn’t love was the slightly-more-creepy part of it, but I’m kind of a wimp when it comes to reading books so if you’re any sort of normal reader you’ll be able to handle the creep factor in this book easily. 😛 4.5 stars.
ftc disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I wish y'all could see me right now because I'm jumping up and down in giddy bibliophile delight over this newly discovered author and her Watch series. I'm especially excited because this is also a Christian Fiction selection and you don't often find inspirational cozy mysteries so that has me all in a twitterpated state as well. :-) I can't wipe the Cheshire grin off my face.
I discovered Kay DiBianca in a Because...Fiction podcast (I have become totally addicted to that show!) And once the show was over I immediately jumped on audible and bought this book. The narrator did an amazing job of bringing these characters to life which made for some mighty fine compulsive listening. Happy sigh.
The Watch on the Fencepost is a mystery within a mystery, both cleverly entwined and complicated enough to give me and my sleuthing armchair a real workout. My light bulb moment came just in time for me to start screaming at the heroine not to...And, of course, she didn't listen, which is okay, really, since it made for a climatic ending.
There's also romance -- eeeppp! And a cute border collie sidekick! Double eeeepppp!!! And so many fascinating secondary characters that I need more stories! Now!!! And I love the inspirational influence that wraps around it all. I am super excited about this new-to-me author/series discovery. (Can you tell?)
I enjoyed this book, a quick read that kept my attention, and had a lot of action, along with clues and puzzles. I will admit that I figured out whom the culprit was early on, but had to keep going to find out if I was right. There are a lot of surprises offered here from beginning to end, you will be shaking your head as they unfold. A sad loss of family, and a find of family, a surprise romance, and bullets flying, all offered and you need to pick this one up for answers.
I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.
The Watch on the Fencepost is an entertaining story by Kay DiBianca. It has mystery, romance, a puzzle, and a bit of suspense with characters I came to care about.
I liked Kate Fraiser from the get-go. She’d recently lost her parents in an accident that didn’t make sense to her, so when she started finding puzzle clues from her dad, she immediately thought the clues might help her discover what caused their accident. I love puzzles, and Kay DiBianca did a great job of incorporating puzzles in the story. I enjoyed trying to figure them out along with Kate. DiBianca also did a great job with the characters and the behind-the-scenes look at a political campaign. I really liked CeCe and hope the second book features her again. There was just enough romance in the story without it overpowering the mystery. DiBianca had me suspecting almost everyone in this story. It had a good ending, and I’m looking forward to reading the second book in the series–Dead Man’s Watch. I think readers will enjoy DiBianca’s story.
This was a book club pick and it was a winner. The author is new to me and I really enjoyed the mystery and sweet romance. In fact, I liked it so much that downloaded the second book in the series.
“Why would someone leave an expensive watch on a fencepost?”
“Puzzles are our friends. Solve a puzzle and you’re one step closer to ultimate truth. Solve a puzzle and you’re one step closer to God.”
“With time all things are revealed.”
This was an enjoyable, light read. What starts out as a simple mystery with a watch on a fencepost morphs into a more complicated mystery regarding a tech company, a governor candidate, possibly murdered parents, infidelity, and more. The main character, Kate, was pretty likable. Her father, before his death, leaves her a series of clues that she and her half-sister, Cece, try to solve. I thought the clues could have been a little more clever. The ending was satisfying but it did leave a few plot points unanswered. I have the next book so will decide if and when I will read that.
Sometimes a novel not only grants insights to the author's personality and intelligence, it issues a promise of books that haven't been written yet. I think Ms. DiBianca has found a niche among readers of mysteries, who love puzzling them out, especially those who aren't interested in visualizing graphic violence and sexual content.
Kathryn Lee Frazier, a runner and an orphan, is busy trying to get through each day in the wake of her parents' untimely death when the unexpected comes looking for her. New people tumble into Kathryn's quiet life, stretching her emotionally. As Kathryn reaches beyond the familial boundaries that have sheltered her, she discovers long-buried secrets and a trail of clues left by her father - her kindred spirit. This is heartwarming fiction at its best.
All in all, The Watch on the Fencepost is a wholesome, fun read. I look forward to more from this new author.
I was pleasantly surprised by this debut novel. It contains a pretty good mystery. DiBianca did a good job of leading me astray in thinking I knew who the bad guy was. It contains some romance, though it did go a bit fast for me. There was a side story about youthful indiscretions of a state representative adding interest to Kathryn's life in the aftermath of the death of her parents.
My favorite part of the novel was the puzzle Kathryn's father left for her, leading to her birthday present. I appreciated the way Kathryn became aware of the meaning of the clues. That was a clever addition to the novel.
This is a good Christian romantic mystery. The plot and character development will keep you reading, as will trying to solve the birthday puzzle.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Author DiBianca has created a tightly woven mystery with plenty of suspects that will keep you turning pages quickly. So often, to make a plot twisty enough to keep modern mystery readers guessing requires creating unrealistic leaps or leaving glaring gaps in the plot (my pet peeve), but the tricky plot in The Watch on the Fencepost fits together like a glove. Stir together murder, lots of surprises, well-developed and likeable characters, smooth writing, and add a dash of romance. How can you go wrong? 5 stars and a thumbs-up!
I really enjoyed this part-mystery, part-romantic tale. The characters are sympathetic and well fleshed out; the subject of adoption is dealt with in a prudent, realistic way. A moderate level of suspense is maintained all through the story, so once I was into it I couldn't put it down.
Clues to the mystery were added in a unique way -- I can imagine how much fun the writer had inserting these. But the end twist comes as a surprise, though it's realistic and all works well.
I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions of the characters and all the clues that kept me guessing until nearly at the end of the story. I was disappointed, however, that the Christian faith aspect was not stronger. The main character seemed to be a church on Sunday only person with very little thought for God throughout the whole story.
Two really good reads (both Watch Series books). Good character development and interesting plot. Hard to put down! Good clean inspiring Christian read. Highly recommend this mystery!
I gave it a high rating for several reasons. It's a very good story with some real original ideas. The characters are good and the author has blended them together very well. It has some fine twists and turns making the plot interesting. And also, it's a clean novel that any age can safely read. Perhaps the lack of bad language and the integrity of the characters are the main reasons for my high rating.
This is first book for this author and it grabbed my attention from chapter 1, Kathryn has lost her parents in a tragic accident, but was it really an accident? And the she starts finding clues from her father, just like in the games they always played. Where do those clues lead? Romance is also thrown in the mix. A delightful read.
I can’t believe this is the first novel this author has written. The characters are believable, and the plot is fun. I can’t wait to read more of her books.
My Review: Here's what I think of The Watch on the Fencepost. At first it took me a bit to actually get into the book. I'm not sure if it's because I had just finished a super fast paced thriller or because of my lack of sleep. But the beginning pops from our main character Kathryn running with her dog(eventually finding THE watch) and a pair of men having an after work chat that involves Kathryn in a small way. Or maybe it's not such a small way.
So once I actually got a couple chapters in the book held me. I literally did not want to stop reading. Lucky for my kids they were asleep at the time so I didn't have to choose between mom life and reading. After that it read so fast and I had to keep all the information in separate compartments in my brain to keep up.
If you look at the cover of the book it's a puzzle. That's because the book is just one huge puzzle to solve. There are clues left by Kate's father(who we find out was actually murdered along with her mother). We also get a huge shocker in that Kate has a half sister she never knew about. This is great news for her as she had no family after her parents death. An orphan no more! The parents of her half sister are now her surrogate aunt and uncle.
The inclusion of Cece's (Kate's half sister) parents is something that I really enjoyed. You see, they're Jewish and celebrate the Shabbat. It's through their help and knowledge of the Bible that Kate finds the answers to a few of the clues. I personally enjoy their inclusion as we celebrate several Jewish holidays and recently have been discussing having a Shabbat dinner in our own home. Seeing the Shabbat prayer in the book was nice as well.
One of the first clues Kate finds is a note in her father's suitcase which reminds her to take her car to the mechanic for it's check up. Her father has never reminded her before so that's strange. But in keeping that appointment she finds her next clue. And maybe a bit of hope and love as well? I mean it sounds like the mechanic is pretty cute and she's a bit smitten.
Throw in a politician and his team who will stop at nothing to protect him from scandal, and woohoo does he have some scandal going on in his past. And surprisingly unknown to her she is a part of the scandal. It just gets more and more complicated until something is going to blow. But can Kate remain unscathed? Can she escape with her life and her heart intact?
This book is amazing and I'm in love. The author hints at more adventures coming for Kate and Cece and that sounds like a plan to me. It almost makes me wish I was still running. Time for that soon after my little ones get bigger. I agree with her that listening to music or audiobooks just makes the running so much easier, but it can also lead to an unawareness in your surroundings. Hopefully Kate never has to deal with being too distracted to watch where she's running!
I received an ebook copy of this book to facilitate my review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and not influenced in anyway. I will never give a false review of a book. Trust me when I say I love to read but I refuse to finish a book just because I started it. This book is definitely a can't put down masterpiece.
Full of twists and turns, this story with its charming and sometimes quirky characters leaves one puzzling after the puzzle all the way through. Congratulations to the author on her debut novel!
Amazing story 5+ It is mysterious and unexpected with all sorts of surprises to keep you glued to the pages. Such an intricate plot with so many puzzle pieces but “with time all things are revealed.” The narrator did an awesome job – the characters were alive! Highly recommend for your enjoyment. I received an audio copy of this book; I was not required to write a favorable review. All opinions in this review are my own.
I enjoyed the story and there were sufficient clues and possibilities to keep me reading. However, I found the writing to be superficial and, for the most part the characters were underdeveloped. The style of the book was a bridge between a cozy mystery and the more substantial mysteries of writers like Louise Penny.
The Watch on the Fencepost is Kay DiBianca’s first novel, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. The story begins with a prologue about a car wreck that is so vividly described, I felt like I was there. Chapter One begins our introduction to Phil Warren, an owner of a car repair shop. Initially, I did not know what I thought about Phil, especially given his reaction to Kathryn Frasier, the female lead in the story. Kathryn Frasier, we learn lost her parents in a tragic car accident she believes was an accident. But as the story unfolds, the reader will discover it was no accident.
Kathryn learns she has an older half-sister she never knew about, and who was adopted by incredible people. CeCe, the half-sister, is an actress who is a master of disguise which allows her to play an important role at the end of the book. Kathryn is reserved and shy around men, but CeCe helps to push her out of her shell in order to discover the possibility of love.
As part of her impending birthday, her father (prior to his death) set up a series of clues as part of an overall puzzle for Kathryn to solve. This puzzle/treasure hunt has no apparent ending in sight, but through careful thought, Philip and CeCe along with CeCe’s parents, Kathryn’s lawyer and other individuals help Kathryn eventually solve the mystery.
The book kept me interested and wanting to read more until I finished the story. The imagery described in the book is incredible, as is the attention to detail. I loved the description of the watch Kathryn finds on the fencepost and how the watch keeps showing up in the story. The person I thought was going to be the guilty party turned out to be innocent, but another person I eventually thought might be involved turned out to be guilty. The twists and turns this book took fascinated me. I only hope Kay DiBianca follows this book up with a sequel because I can tell there is so much more for this cast of characters.
So if you love a good mystery, check The Watch on the Fencepost out for yourself.
Kathryn has suffered a great loss when her parents die in a car accident. She decides to train for a marathon as a way to ease her stress. Along the way she notices a fence post with a gold watch draped there. Being the kind of person she is, she turns it in. What happens next starts an adventure of intrigue and danger. It's not everyday that you find out you have a half sister but Kathryn is in for a big surprise. Her parents had kept a big secret from her in the name of Cece.
Meeting Cece seemed to help Kathryn not feel so alone in the world. They hit if off and I loved reading how they bonded as sisters. Kathryn's dad has always liked puzzles and he has left clues that maybe will solve the mystery of Kathryn's parents accident. I loved reading about the clues and how Kathryn and Cece worked together to figure out the puzzle. The story includes Jewish traditions which I loved reading about. The author does a great job of giving us background in what a Shabbat dinner is. Cece's adoptive parents are such a nice addition to the story and want to help Kathryn anyway they can.
There is also a very important person in the story who is intertwined in Cece's past. In the midst of everything else going on in the story we find a political race going on . An all important governor race is all the talk. What secret is the man running for governor hiding? Do Kathryn and Cece pose a threat to him? The secrets run deep in this story and I tried really hard to solve them. The author has a great job of giving readers little hints, but I was quite surprised at the outcome.
It's a fast pace story with characters that keep readers entertained. I enjoyed getting to know more about Kathryn and why she has always been afraid to fail. That is a heavy burden to carry around and it does make it hard to take a chance on relationships. The ending is a heart pounding race to save Kathryn and I was on the edge of my seat. I loved the story and hope there is another book to follow.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
This book kept me guessing last puzzles all along the way. Several times I thought I knew what was going to happen next and was surprised. It was fun and wholesome reading with just a couple tastes of faith. I couldn't put it down so it kept me up longer than I had planned. It was worth the loss of sleep.
