From dark romance author who brought the Blackridge Prep Series.
Secrets are meant to be buried, until they aren't. And Lakyn Ashford has the biggest secret of all. She thought she could get away with it. She should've known better. I'd never allow her to escape so easily. There is nothing more enjoyable than witnessing her crumble as I taunt her, trick her, and toy with her sanity. Watching her fall apart is a game I'm destined to win. I take my time with her, picking her apart, piece by piece, until she's at my mercy. The smile behind my mask grows as she fears the slasher in Hellcrest Heights. She pretends to be afraid of me, but at night, she falls to her knees as she bends to my will. And I have only just begun. I know Lakyn Ashford's biggest secret. It's me.

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST HALLOWEEN...
This author always goes above and beyond delivering us unique unputdownable books each and every time and this one was no different. She fast became one of my favorite authors. The title alone had me on my knees begging for this. The anticipation driving me insane. The teasers floating around only added to the anticipation. So when this landed on my device, I dropped everything..Life was put on hold..
SECRETS
MURDER
The storyline, the characters pulled me in like no other, who is he? Looking for clues chapter by chapter, is it one of the guys? Or is it a stranger? In my heart I'm leaning towards one man, the one that raises so many questions, how many secrets is he hiding himself? So many unanswered questions, so many theories of who the slasher is. Then we reach the end of the book with a cliffy racing towards me at high speeds leaving me in turmoil, skyrocketing those anticipation levels for the next book that I need to get my hands on asap.
The perfect Halloween/October read, there's a masked killer on the loose, slashing a knife welding hand at anyone who gets too close to Lakyn Ashford. He wants to play with her, make her bleed, protect her, and maybe even kill her!
She's enamoured by him, he brings out something within her that no ones been even capable of doing before, he's her dirty little secret.
But what complicates things even more is her old flame has come barrelling back into her life, the one that hurt her beyond repair, but her love for him never died. But to have him she has to get through the boys who have claimed her.
On a fateful Halloween night in the seaside town of Hellcrest Heights, an incident at the docks leads to Lakyn Ashford being sent to stay with her aunt and uncle in Montana.
When she returns, nearly a year later, she and her friends are terrorized by a stäIker à la I Know What You Did Last Summer.

I need the next book right THIS moment. The ending had me choking.
The whole book had an addictive plot with horror elements, creepy vibes, and unexpected plot twists. It kept me guessing every single time something happened and although I had theories flooding my mind, they kept changing with every clue and twist. The whole time, I was crackling with anticipation, eager to turn to the next page before even finishing the current one.
This might contain minor spoilers (probably not but better to be safe with this book). I got into the book knowing that the plot was about a masked killer. I was surprised to find that there were actually multiple love interests. All of them alluring in a truly AR Breck style. As with her other books, her mmcs were possessive, dangerous and utterly unhinged.
Now for baby Lake, I loved her and although she annoyed me at times, she was incredible. A very complex fmc who basked in her power, her fear even in her much dangerous or deprived thoughts Lakyn had weaved, along with her friends, a vast web of lies, secrets, and relationships. In the end, it made me question if she truly wanted to resolve it.
4.5/5 ⭐ 3/5 🌶️
Did I like it? A spooky yes. Would I read it again? Yes! Can't wait for the next book.
getting acid poured on me would be a less painful experience than this book 😬 take the popular kids in high school who passed each other around but make them college murderers and you have the main characters in this book.
everything in this book was just horrible 😵💫 if a man ever said “Set the devil in front of my feet and I’ll knock him to his knees” to me i would be in tears 😭😭 like keep that corny shit to yourself.
so many ridiculous things happened in this book y’all. for example, her “boys” threaten her dad who is the governor & tell him that they won’t leave him alone with her….that doesn’t even make any sense 💀 can you imagine college students “scaring” the governor? but not just the governor, they’re out here threatening police officers in broad daylight 🥴
there’s one scene where all her dad says is that she won’t get access to her trust fund and she’ll serve time in jail if she gets involved in any criminal activity & this girl throws an entire fit about how unfair that is. miss girl all they asked is for you to not be a criminal…i think that’s the bare minimum.
here are two of the many quotes in this book that were so bad they actually made me laugh: - “If I cut you, would you bleed?” is that supposed to be a deep line? 💀
- “You know what you do to people. One look, and they fall to their knees. One touch, and they become a beggar.” sir no one is falling to their knees for her except for you guys 😂
also why do they call each other baby? that’s so weird 😭😭 like creed is dating vienna but is calling lakyn baby??? that can’t be normal but again they are the pass around group 🤷🏾♀️ i will not understand for the life of me what they all love about lakyn. the most bland and annoying person ever. i think the entire friend group is unlikeable but she is the most unlikeable out of them. her level of entitlement is out of this world. she is incredibly whiny and thinks the world revolves around her. they’re starting a “war” over her?? i was actually dying of laughter because these people can’t be serious 🤣 truly i wished that the masked killer murdered all of them especially lakyn
worst book i’ve ever read in my life 🤕🤢 if i could give it 0 stars i would
I'm bumped since this book that has Scream & I Know What You Did Last Summer vibes got the potential to be excellent yet I wasn't into it!
We have 8 characters yet they are all bland. The 4 guys kept saying that the 4 girls were theirs, I thought this was an RH or 4x4 kinda situation, yet 2 of the boys only focused on this 1 girl, Lakyn. If you wanna claimed the girls, you better give them the same attention! I mean when Eloise the guys went partying. Dude, really? If I was El, I'd be super salty because the guys didn't want the girls to go out with anyone other than them yet all of their attention went to Lakyn.
The group kept saying that Lakyn was different, she was their queen, but I didn't see anything stand out. She kept saying that she was all for blood if anyone messed with her, yet she was all whiny.
The guys acted like they own the town but they didn't do anything other than party. They got no street cred, they got away with things because their parents are political figures. Lakyn had daddy issue and had no problem (even happy?) when she found out that her Dad
Lakyn kept having sex with 1 of them guys and also the . She also let 1 of the other guys from the group insert , but the guys have a power play problem, both boys wanna claimed her as his, so it's totally not RH, and basically, Lakyn was cheating with the one she's seeing. I don't understand why she got 4 guys + a serial killer lusting over her when she's so boring.
I kept going until the end because I was curious to know who the masked killer is. Yet the book ends up with a cliffhanger. Dang!
this was genuinely the worst experience of my entire life. lakyn is hands down the worst mc i’ve ever come across. the author tried so hard to make her this strong and independent character but the reality is she’s just a whiny loser who would be NOTHING without her daddy’s money and connections. she would’ve been locked up within the first two chapters if it weren’t for her father bc she and her dumbass friends don’t know how to get rid of a body. lakyn tries so hard to paint her dad as the villain all bc he sent her away after she literally murdered someone and threatened to take away her trust fund like 😭 did u really expect me to be on her side?
the relationships between lakyn and her friends were also so very odd. there’s no explanation as to how they all became so close or how she got with reign and asher. i also didn’t see the point in her having so many girlfriends. they’re all basically the exact same person, the author would’ve been just fine only giving her one best friend. instead i had to remember all those girls name and not even know what they look like bc the author gives no physical descriptions of any of her characters..
the guys were also all such losers but archer the biggest loser of them all ik his weenie’s the size of my pinky. he’s so weirdly obsessed with lakyn but maybe if he actually made himself useful and learned how to properly dispose of a body, lakyn might finally give his desperate ass another shot idk 🤷🏻♀️ reign is less of a loser but a loser nonetheless. bcos how r u gonna let ur girl’s ex kiss her right in front of u MULTIPLE times and not do anything?? always talking about “ur mine” and “i’ll kill anyone who touches u” yet when someone does touch her, he just stands there like a little bitch. ok lmaoo.
i’m glad the author did a shitty job at trying to hide who the masked killer is. it was so easy to put together from just the first couple of interactions lakyn has with him. that just means i won’t have put myself through the second book to find out 🙏🏼
if i could i’d honestly give this 0/5 stars just bc of my deep hatred for lakyn and asher. i need them to d!e.
This was one of the most unhinged books I have ever read. The protagonists are obsessed with each other. The smut scenes were so great. However, if you consider reading this book, please read the trigger warnings because there are some scenes that explain the murders in detail.
"I'll uncover all your secrets, baby Lake. I'll strip them away, one by one, until there's nothing left to reveal."
Holy shit!!! What a wild ride was that!!! I am regretting that I haven't read this author before!!! The woman has a very dark and powerful pen and I am enamored with this story!!! Of course, I am waiting impatiently the next part after that cliffy!!!! This was the perfect Halloween read with a slasher on the loose who is determined to take everyone down for a past crime or is it something more than that??? "Slashers and secrets" had vibes from "I know what you did last Summer" and in combination with the dark romance, it was an unforgettable story!!!
"Tell me, baby Lake, would you like to play a game with me?"
Lakyn Ashford and her crew have a secret!!! Last Halloween, things turned badly for them and their whole life changed in a night, especially for Lakyn. Now, eleven months later, Lakyn is back to Hellcrest Heights but nothing is the same... A killer is after all of them, but his main target is Lakyn... She is the one who he wants for himself... To toy with her, to protect her, to own her and maybe to kill her... It is a lethal combination and Lakyn is finding herself drown to him, even though he keeps spilling the blood of people around the town... As the bodies are pilling up, this monster is becoming Lakyn's biggest and deadliest secret!!! Where all this mess will lead us???
"Everything I ever do is for you, Lakyn. Just remember that. As the bodies fall, you'll fall too. For me."
Except of the appearance of the killer and the guilts that are eating Lakyn for what happened last year, her ex boyfriend who had broken her heart is coming back to town and into her life and he is carrying his own share of dark secrets.... He wants her back and even though he doesn't deserve a second chance Lakyn's heart belongs to him... Also, behind her there are three other boys who have claimed her as their own and they are determined to protect her no matter what... So as you can see, things are pretty complicated in here!!!
"Why are you here, Reign?" "To save you, or to ruin you. I guess only time will tell."
Who is the slasher after all??? Is he one of the boys??? Is he the one who got away??? To be honest here, I have an idea who the slasher might be, even though I am still trying to figure out his reasons behind his actions... But he might not be him after all!!! As I was reading the book, I was in constant doubting of who might be and what the hell was happening!!! I need answers and I need them ASAP!!!
"This is her punishment, and her reward. I'm saving her from the monster. While also punishing her for being one."
The only sure thing is that this book got under my skin and made my blood bump wildly inside of me... I feel addicted and I can not stop thinking about it!!! A.R. Breck got under my skin and I just want more and more... It was a very dark and twisted story with splashes of horror inside but this combination was so addicted... I just need my next fix... And I need more of this world even when this duet will be complete!!! What have you done to me, A.R. Breck???
"Pretend all you want, Lakyn. Your truths are secrets, and your lies are poison on the tip of your tongue. Keep lying to yourself all you want, baby Lake."
**I received an ARC for the exchange of an honest review**
This book is a WILD ride. To clarify, I loved this. I did, but I also hated it. It invoked so many feelings in me, anger, shock, disbelief and turned on 👀🙈 I think if I had this in physical copy it would have been launched in frustration. But I think books are the best when they put us through our paces.
We begin with I Know What You Did Last Summer vibes. I felt for Layken, I really did. I felt like everyone was against her, her friends and her family. It got to a point where I wanted to scream at them like “IT WASN’T JUST HER” but none of her friends stuck up for her and it made me want to punch them all. The person I felt treated her the best was the Slasher and hello!! He’s a masked serial killer who kinda wants to kill her but also screws her within an inch of her life at knife point 😏
You spend this book second guessing everything, there are subtle hints to a few characters to give you the could it be them!? questioning constantly. The book of course leaves you with a MASSIVE cliffy. I was GAGGING for more. Andrea gal you did us all so dirty 😩
Another thing I want to touch on, is that Andrea is a wizard at world building. I would love to live in this town because the ship, the lighthouse, the docks, the treehouse!? My imagination was running wild 🏃♀️ I would sell my soul to read book two now.
I have my thoughts on who it is, I have talked the ears off @smutandhorror, @kimkyreads and @soph discussing who we think it is and why we think it and it’s been so fun albeit frustrating swapping theories.
AAAAAHHHHHH.. what the fuckety fuck.. cliffhangers, to me, are equal parts delicious and also the bane of my whole entire fucking existence.. and shit did A.R. Breck really try me right now okay. shit..ok ok PAUSE.
firstly, THIS BOOK IS POSSESSIVE REINCARNATED. like the whole vibe. if I had to summarize this book in one word it would be possesssssive. Reign is literally the most possessive asshole in the world. And I am so fucking here for it. There is just something about a delicious, possessive, sexy, strong, bad ass man… And add the fact that he wears joggers and a backwards, baseball cap! I fucking die. Feral. Add to that the sexual tension, hell maybe just tension in general with him and archer, Creed, and Kyler,. That is an explosion waiting to happen, and boy did we see it happen. Lakyn you lucky bitch.
my blood pressure was through the fucking roof the whole time trying to figure out 1.Who the slasher was. And 2. When the guys were going to find out what the fuck she was doing. And now let’s get to that fucking ending. Shattered. I’m not gonna post any spoilers, but what I think happened and what happened better not actually be what happened. You feel me. I don’t even know if that makes sense. I’m not thinking clearly. I just need to know what happened and who the fucking slasher is before I lose my mind. I am way too invested in this book and I have never had an ending sneak up on me so fast. As soon as I saw that I was at the end. I literally was like what the fuck lol.
anyway, I’ve binged this shit in one sitting. This has made it to one of my top favorite books of this year, no doubt about it. Five star read if you love anything possessive, you will love this book. It’s giving me scream meats, I know what you did last summer, but with a bunch of sexy men included. 😛👻🔥🔪 . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What the actual hell was this shit storm of a story.
I have to stop using TikTok for book recs because I have yet to find one that good. It’s doesn’t get exciting until about 32% and even then it was ok. Expected.
I have many questions:
What’s up with her nickname “baby Lake” ? Do you mean “pond” ? You might as well call her puddle then, cause she was about as exciting as one. Unless you count “whining,” “bad temper,” and “woe is me” as personality traits. She’s supposed to be 21 but acts like she’s 15.
Why did her “friends” and “protectors” leave her floating in a pool asleep at night? Seems kinda sus considering y’all already talked about the possible murderer not long before.
Why go to the library after the second attack? Are you guys the Scooby Doo gang?
And what’s with her dad showing up all the time? Wtf. And then poof he’s dead
You have a dead detective in your home and you decide not to call the police? What?
Then there’s the whole pissing contest between Reign and Archer.
I really wanted to like this one too, but TikTok let me down once more. I skipped ahead for a lot of it. So when book 2 comes out, can someone just tell me who the slasher is and how to book ends? Thanks.

I absolutely loved Slashers & Secrets by A.R. Breck. If you are a fan of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Breck's dark and edgy writing style, I recommend you JUMP on this story ASAP. Lakyn and her friends were fantastic. I am obsessed with this whole crew and could not devour this story fast enough!
What I loved more than anything was Lakyn's connection with her friends. She is strong, determined and loyal and her love for her crew was so apparent. I also just adored her bond with Reign. He is sexy af, dominant and mysterious. He is basically on the same level as Felix for me (IYKYK) so y'all already know he is next level!! This story had so much passion, drama, secrets and a masked murderer who was coming for everyone. I could not stop reading and legit am so hooked and on the edge of my seat.
Overall, this story was incredible! Breck's writing was fantastic and the story was top notch! I was engrossed from the beginning and could not stop my brain from formulating allll the theories and speculations. This quite frankly is a brilliant story with a crazyyyyy ending. I am dying for book two SO hard!! 5 stars! ~Ratula
I absolutely had a blast reading this story. It was everything I was wanting it to be. Dark, dirty, sexy & the plot had me hooked the entire time. I couldn’t put this book down for anything! Lakyn and her man were hot hot hot. The tension was so good & I just couldn’t wait to see what happened. If you’re in the mood for a great darker spooky vibes romance I highly recommend you pick this one up!
I want to grip this monster and have him take away the pain in my heart and the ache in my bones. I shouldn't want this monster; I can't want him. Yet I do.
This book is one of the darkest book I’ve ever read. Every single character are f-up. To think that there may be people like them in the real weird is a scary thought.
The story is in two PoV. One of them is Lakyn. She is part of a toxic friend group. Which consist of her three girls best-friends: Posie, Eloise, and Vienna and three creepy possessive guys: Archer, Creed, and Kyler. All of them would do anything, I mean anything to protect one other but especially Lakyn. It is said repeatedly that her attractiveness and her presence makes the three guys possessive. The guys are extremely protective of the girls and possessive. They made sure to tell them repeatedly. Especially to Lakyn. They keep telling/remind them on how they belong to them: Every one of us who stands in this house right now. We're not solo, baby. We're all fucking one. We've got each other's backs, and there's no turning on that shit. You know the rules. You've always known the rules. These girls belong to us, not just one of us, but all of us. That includes Lakyn. You guys have history, and we understand that. But you left, and she was fucking hurt, bro, and I'm not allowing it to happen again."
And what creates possessive “boyfriends”? Friends? Parents? Sneaks. Due to the constant pressure of being told “mine”, Lakyn is seeing a guy really carefully and privately. Unfortunately for her it didn’t last long enough to the point they kill him and have to bury his body. Thus, this is where the story begins.: Hellcrest Heights has its own demons and darkness that have been here since the beginning of time. It's what I love about this town. Hellcrest Heights isn't just a place filled with edge and mystery, it's my home. It'll forever be my home.
When the authorities found the body, Lakyn’s parents sent her far away for eleven months in order to avoid “any suspicions”. Which fails because when she comes back everyone thinks/ knows that she murdered her ‘boyfriend’: "You know I'll do anything to keep you safe, Lakyn, and that includes burying your fuck buddy. Now grab a shovel, help me dig a fucking hole, and let's forget this night ever happened,” Archer snaps. What she didn’t expect to see is her ex-lover Reign. Everything becomes a 180: The world moves for Reign. Reign never moves for the world. He's dangerous. The alarm blares so aggressively in my chest, and I have to take a breath over my skipping heart.
When a new serial killer appears and would kill anyone for her and stalks her at night, fucks her; cute her with a knife. She,knowing that he wants to Jill her friends, can’t help her fucked up obsession over him:
"I can't help but think watching me murder someone made your pussy drip with need. Am I right?" ; Unknown: Everything I ever do is for you, Lakyn. Just remember that. As the bodies fall, you'll fall, too. For me. But again being around Reign brings out all the hidden love she had for him. Now she is stuck in a murder suspense; a love rectangle(Serial Killer; Reign and Archer). - Idk how Lakyn is obsessed with the killer. It’s seems laughable and sometimes hawt: "Who are you?" she whispers, I hum. "Your very own nightmare.' - Let’s start with Lakyn: I'm Lakyn Ashford, keeper of secrets, and simply weak when it comes to the man who wears a mask.
My love floats to Reign, because he sings to my soul with a look and a caress. The masked man drives me into the darkness parts of my soul. The depravity that I feel is nothing I ever wanted to enter, but now that I've stepped foot in it, I never want to leave. Light and dark. Dark and dark. Darker and darkest.” I am gonna be honest Lakyn is stressing me out. Because she does not have a backbone whenever her guy friends are being possessive over her. Whenever she gets angry at Archer, the only thing he has to do is to kiss her and all the angry disappears. Again does not have a backbone(can’t stand up for herself). Her friend group is so toxic that it keeps getting worse as the story goes. (She is also toxic.)she is whining a lot which I don’t understand why it attracts them?
“You're just a regular girl, Lakyn, except you're not."
And that cliffhanger tho…! I know who is the serial killer….
Easiest 5 star rating 🔥 This had me from the very start. I loved how obsessive the guys were with the girls, especially Lakyn. Reign is definitely my fave guy but I am also a big fan of Archer 🤭 I have my theories on who I think the slasher is and honestly after that ending I need the next book RIGHT NOW. I also love the slasher and I thinkkk it may theories are right it may make sense. The spice was so good and the murder mystery side was so intriguing. This is up there as one of my fave reads this year I was obsessed and just couldn’t put it down 🔥 I feel like everyone needs to read this book 🔥
We have Lakyn and her friends who after one horrific act try to bury it, only for it to be dug up. Lakyn is sent away to return 11 months later, there are rumours, whispers and surprise surprise there is a masked killer on the loose ready to tear Lakyn and her friends apart and expose every one of their darkest secrets and in the man who tore out her heart and you’ve got yourself one mega story. A.R. Breck never fails to amaze me. Every book I read from her blows me away and this story is no different. What I will say is I loved Andrea’s use of red herrings in this story, every time you thought you was onto something you find yourself second guessing yourself. When you thought you knew the characters you’re thrown off course with something else that is revealed about them. Andrea has a way with world building, character development, creating suspense and chilling tension and overall a way to make utter psychopathic killers seem extremely desirable (IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW!) (ALSO IM LOOKING AT ALL YOU BABES WHO WOULD THROW YOURSELVES AT BILLY LOOMIS AND STU MACHER). This book has everything anyone who is a fan of slashers and who dunit films are looking for. At no point in this book are you bored, from possessive men, to masked killers, to murder, to secrets being dredged up , to utter carnage. This book will not disappoint you at all.
“Tell me baby Lake, would you like to play a game with me?”
Can you say stressed tf out is an understatement for the emotional turmoil this book has put me through . You don’t know if you wanna root for them or for their demise . Let’s just say “I Know What You Did Last Summer” meets “Scream” and I’m not mad at all . The book follows Lakyn and her friend group as they try to get over a murder they have caused , but what happens when not all is forgotten ? This book will have you ready to swing lol but the ending is what got me . Is the slasher who we all think it is ?
“Everything I ever do is for you, Lakyn. As the bodies fall, you’ll fall, too. For me.”
This book is the first book I've given a 5 star rating in awhile. It pulls you in from the beginning and wont let you go even at the end. What a cliffhanger!!!!! Slashers and secrets has it it all. It dark, twisted keeps you guessing. All the guys in the book is possessive. Jealous, controlling and 100% alpha. Not only is there death, secrets the female lead is involved with multiple people. Omg i need book 2 like now.
This book was sooo good it’s dark mysterious spooky and super hot it was the perfect read for October! I was immediately hooked and couldn’t put it down I loved the characters the storyline was amazing and the twists and turns kept me turning page after page trying to find the answers I desperately needed and I still have so many questions! I can’t wait for the next book already my obsession for A.R. Breck stories is growing and I’m definitely adding this one to my list of favorites!
This book is most certainly your typical 90s slasher and because of that I’m assuming that’s why ALL the characters make the choices they do You know the type of choices characters do during a horror film that have you screaming at tv. Yeah, that.
I really don’t know how to describe my feelings on this book and I just don’t think this duology is for me.
🖤🎃 welcome to hellcrest heights. 🎃🖤 the perfect spooky halloween seaside town where you keep your darkest secrets hidden & buried. until they slowly start to unravel.
lakyn finds herself consumed by a sexy masked killer and i don’t blame her at all. when i tell you this man would die for her has me deceased. i’d let him slap me silly and i’d thank him. i would never wish to see light again.
i was kinda worried i wasn’t going to like this but i ended up liking it more than i thought. it was suspenseful, chaotic, dangerous & murderous. i devoured everything !!
Why is no one talking about the plagiarism in this book from Scream? One thing is getting inspiration or doing a retelling/reimagining, but this is pure plagiarism in certain scenes. I know because I just watched the first three Scream movies—I have the movie transcript and the evidence is right there in writing, too. And from what a friend told me, it looks like there might be some of it from I Know What You Did Last Summer (which I’ll be watching now just to see if the author plagiarized that movie, as well).
Aside from the plagiarism, this book was not hooking me at all. The female main character is incredibly annoying, and I honestly was just waiting for someone to unalive her. The rest of the characters and “plot” were entirely boring. I got to 47%… You’d think things would pick up, but that was so not the case.
I. Am. Obsessed. With everything about this story. Omg. I cannot get ahold of myself after that enticing, dark, sexy, mysterious, PERFECT journey that I just embarked on.
I am certainly a sucker for dark romances- and Slashers and Secrets just secured a top shelf spot on my list of favorites.
Where is the second book? I don't know how long I can go without a follow up to this literal masterpiece.
i love ‘I know what you did last summer’ (the movie not the shawn and camila song) and anything inspired by it but this was just boring.
The plot and the vibes are pretty similar but the changes are just not it. All the reviews i’ve seen say this is unhinged when i think this was meh all around.
Maybe it gets better after the 60% mark but i can’t handle reading one more page about this girl, her awful female friends and her weird stalker male friends. Like worship her? Nah. They are just a bunch of annoying creeps.
Definitely not terrible, but there isn’t a single likable character and a ton of angst. I’ll read the sequel when it comes out, but I’ll make sure I’m prepared to deal with these characters first.
