A very gimpy shoulder thanks to challenging her alpha, a newborn packmate with the dietary preferences of an angry bear, and a big lug of a wolf who thinks she’s his mate and keeps trying to prove it in really embarrassing ways.
But none of those are nearly as bad as a best friend who insists she has the right to dream. To want. To hope. To believe.
The leader of the shadow pack had to give up all of those things.
Trying to find them again might lead a lot of wolves she loves off a cliff.
At last! Return to Ghost Mountain. Cautions: if you want action and suspense, this book will not supply. My main criticism is that while the viewpoint changes often, the voice doesn't seem to change accordingly, I frequently had to page back and check whose head I was inhabiting.
I give 5 stars because I expect to read it at least 5 times. The books keep me warm while walking through painful and desperate times. I always get ideas on what to attend to in my important relationships, and ways to relate and approaches to try that are not my usual ruts.
The lessons: listen. Kindness is not weak. The more I share, the better off I am. Love may not be enough, but without it, nothing else is enough either. Pain plus helplessness can destroy, but I am only helpless when I try to be sufficient unto myself. Be grateful for small things done for me. Be grateful for the opportunity to do small things for others: that too is a gift.
This series is a slice-of-life, stream of consciousness kind of narrative. You have to be comfortable sinking into it and just flowing. It won't be for everyone, but I really do love it.
This one was especially enjoyable - Bailey and Rio are long favorites, and they so deserved to find their own happiness. I also really appreciated that in this one, Hayden got to be celebrated as an alpha. In too many books, it's all about him getting out of the way so someone else can be in the center, to the point where it sometimes feels like he's alpha in name only. It makes me sad for him, because he's wonderful and doesn't deserve to be sidelined and taken for granted. And in this book, he feels like he gets to be who he is, which I loved.
If you haven't read this series, make sure you start at the beginning - each book is basically a chapter in one long story.
This pack continues to heal in ways that seem odd at first, but they work. I really love seeing all of them happy and all the ties to other packs they are building. The game that came about was so much fun and did so much for the pack. I especially loved how this one ended, loved that Bailey took a chance and that she is letting herself be happy with Rio.

I've loved every book in this series so far, and this one is no different. There are so many things to point to when I think about why I like these stories so much. In Shield, and all the rest of the series, the story is wonderful. The characters are so well-written, and it seems like you're visiting with old, beloved friends every time you open one of these books. I guess overall, it's the feeling I get as I read the story, like I'm wrapped in a blanket, sitting by a campfire with good friends and a cup of cocoa warming my hands. I really like how the author includes so many points of view and that they're so easy to follow. The main thrust of Shield is Bailey and Rio's growing relationship and the pitfalls they face, but other pack stories are wound in around Bailey and Rio and the overall effect is wonderful. If you like shifters, and stories of love, loyalty, and triumph over pain and adversity, do yourself a big favor and read this book. Best of all, the series is on KU, so start with the first book, Alpha, to get the threads of all of the wonderful characters and interwoven threads of their stories. I've said it with every review and I'll say it again: no one writes characters you grow to love as well as Audrey Faye.
This series is one of the best shifters series I've read and I've read alot cause it's my favourite genre. You can't read this book or any of the books in the series except in the order they've been written cause the stories are interconnected and you won't be able to understand what's happening if you haven't started with Alpha (Hayden's book). And these stories require concentration , you can't read if your mind is not solely focused on it cause it's that type of books and I like that about them. From the first book in this series I got so invested in this world this author created with these broken but strong characters and their story of smarts, survival , resilience, familial bonds ,friendship, conquering their demons and growing stronger individually and together as a pack. It's been a while since I've read sentinel which is the previous book but upon reading the first chapter in this book I got sucked right back into this world and the tears started flowing. This author's mind bewilders me because the depth of her stories and her characters is far beyond amazing . I know this author is semi retiring but I'm hoping that it won't be too long for the next story Poet to be out.
Time is relative; at least that's what they say. I know in the grand scheme of things, I haven't actually had to wait all that long for this book to come out, but it felt like it was taking forever! This book was a joy to read for so many reasons. Recently returned packmates are making real progress, and one of them has not only become a useful pack member, but a better person than he was, "before." The author did a great job with the romance between Rio and Bailey! Nothing with Bailey is ever easy, and Rio's Sentinel throws a curve too. Basically, you have two wolves, two humans, and a Sentinel trying to work out a romantic relationship; can you say, complicated? There is so much going on in this story, and I can't wait to see where the author takes us next, and who will be in the hot seat that is, change. This series needs to be read in order, so be sure to start with the first book. I can't recommend this series highly enough!
I love this series, but as each story builds from the previous book, they must be read in order.
This a series built on characters, it is a wolf pack that is slowly rebuilding from terrible events that happened before the first book. As it goes along we see babies born, couples get together, new packmates, old packmates, friends made with other supernatural packs, birds, cats, bears.
This time we see Bailey come to terms with her new role in the pack, she is a dominant, but now doesn't need to be the strong, shadowleader she's been for the last 6 years. Now she can relearn how to dream, wish, be. Whilst still helping her pack.
And the Sentinel, Rio, is trying very hard to get her attention and trying too hard with bad poetry. As he's a magic wolf, he thinks he should be able to do this alone, but plenty of wolves, cats & bears have advice for him, whether he wants it or not.
I was so excited to read that this book was out; and a bit sad that it wasn't *quite* the next installment I'd hoped for; it actually seems to span less than 10 days. Yes, it resolves some important issues, which help to settle the GhostMtn Pack down from the major excitements of the @.@! events of *Sentinel*.
Ms Faye has not announced a deadline for the next book, though she's hinted the title may be *Poet*, which might mean it will center on Terrance.
With this series, you absolutely have to start at the beginning, IMO. AlphaAlpha is key to the whole storyline.
really enjoyed this book, it wasn't as much of a tear jerker as some of the others. The emotional stuff was at a much more tolerable level and I was pleasantly surprised, when there is too much of it, you can't read the book all at once which sucks.
This story was very focused on the 2 main characters with a little sprinkle of the main players which let us totally immerse in their experience, but since it's been so long since the last book, it would be great if we could get a family tree or character list so we can keep up.
The one thing that I did not like about this story is that its hard to tell when the characters are in animal form or human form and sometimes you need to know to visualize the story as it's happening.
All in all a good book and looking forward to the next one.
Semi- retirement? Say it ain't so! I followed Audrey from her former life with a certain group of witches. The Ghost Mountain pack has filled in the spaces in me leftover from her writing change. She elicits such emotion with these pack stories even if I need a score card to keep track of all the players (characters). It's all worth the effort. While I await the next story , I'll go back to the beginning and relish every giggle and tear these stories bring out of me. Thanks Audrey and, please, keep writing - there are so much more I need to know about this pack. The next birth, the next mating, the next breakthrough for broken members, etc.
I grew up on the south shore of Lake Erie, where the land has been slowly rising for the last five thousand years, directing it’s waters down the Mississippi, then the Susquehanna, then the Hudson River, and now the Saint Lawrence River. This book, number nine in a living series, continues showing the somewhat unpredictable but inevitable adjustment to the removal of a crushing despotism in book one. Now, the heroine, Bailey, is invited to “lay down her sword and shield”, to relax her guard and express her creative playfulness as she is wooed. I wait to see where the waters will flow next.
My main complaint from the last few books still stands - too many switches between POV. I like that there are several different view points, but it is a bit much. Also, I feel like a lot is happening between the lines - making me feel like I'm missing out, because I tend to need to have things spelled out :-P
I still really enjoyed it, though. I love the growing relationship between Bailey and Rio. It worked better than I had thought it would. I also enjoyed seeing more of Ivan, and ADORED the pine cone war between the dominants. That one both made me laugh out loud and brought a lump to my throat.
How do you integrate those whose trauma has so overwhelmed them that they cannot return to who they were? Is being heroic in the face of life breaking events a life long calling? Is healing possible? All of these questions are addressed in this latest addition to the Ghost Mountain Shifters. One of the things I love the most about this series is the way the pack and side characters work through what seems to be unsolvable issues. I enjoy all my visits with the pack.
I haven't decided if Audrey Faye is the best writer I've come across in years or if I love her series for all the emotional ups and downs. Its a cathartic experience.
Bailey's soft parts are buried deep. She's been a shield for so long, she isn't sure how to be anything else. Rio isn't a dominant but he understands putting the needs of pack first. Bailey and Rio navigate courtship landmines while several packs come together to embrace two very broken wolves.
I love Audrey Faye, especially her Ghost Mountain Series. These books are all about facing conflict and coming out on top. In Shield Bailey had to fight her innermost fears in order to finish healing herself her pack, and complete her mate bond. Since Bailey and her mate are such central figures in the series its no surprise that all there friends try to help and support they as Bailey meets her final fears. As always this book was filled with laughter teats nd rainbows.
This book has a straighter theme than some of the others. Not bad just a difference I noted. It’s still daunting to remember so many characters and their relationships in a story you haven’t read in awhile. That disconnect takes away some emotional punch from the story. I didn’t finish confused so I guess that means I was able to pick enough back up. The quality of these book has remained steady.
As usual, I cannot say enough nice things about this series. It is just so feel-good without being unpleasantly sappy. The characters are well-written and deep and complex. Unfortunately, at this point there are so many characters that I have to maintain a spreadsheet. If the author was listening, I'd suggest an organization chart/family tree might be well-received. Read the series from the start. There will be no regrets.
This whole series has been an onslaught of cathartic tears as you "watch" all of these lovely characters heal together. I suspected this couple from the beginning, but there have been so many trip points and hard and wonderful surprises in their journey, I think I've cried the most during this book. Please note that I don't tend to cry at trauma, but at inspirational triumph...
I very much enjoyed the shenanigans of my favorite wolves. And cats. And hawks. And a cute baby raven who screams a lot. It made me laugh often and cry occasionally. I hope there are many more books in this series’ future. I am quite fond of these characters, and what happens in these books is not near as important as who they happen to. Enjoy the romp! I know I always do.
I love that with each new book the focus is still on the pack as a whole. Sure it puts getting one person/people where they need to be as the driving force of the story but there are so many layers and ripples through the pack that we get to spend time with them too and show how one person moving forward can show others how to take their first step.
I have a major hang up on the Ghost Mountain Pack Shifters. I love these cozy romance novels that are so much more than just romance and shifters. Truly magnificent story telling. In the words of quite the lovely polar bear, Audrey Faye is quite the story teller, and I would not change a thing!
I cannot state enough hoe much I adore the ghost mountain wolves. This series is a journey of sorrow, hope, recovery, strength and so much more. It it's so amazingly written that I feel true connection with the characters and champion their story line. The writing is seamless . Chicken soup for the soul.
I wanted to know what happened with Xander and Milo. And of course about Bailey and Rio. It was good.
But it still bothers me that everyone is a mind reader and everyone talks in metaphors. I think I read all I wanted from this series and I'm gonna leave it here. It was a nice journey and I feel like this is a good resting point.
I am reading through Ghost Mountain for the 3rd or 4th time. I laugh, cry, suffer and celebrate with every character. One of my favorite series. Hope there are many more stories of packmates to come. Eleven books shouldn't feel like too few, but I am hopeful that there are more coming... I have friends here.
I love these stories of Ghost Mountain Pack. It is like chicken noodle soup for my soul. I love all the nuances to the story line and the community that the author has written about. Excellently crafted, highly recommend!
I have been waiting for this book since last year, and I'd wait several more, too get more of this wonderful world you've created. I sincerely hope you keep writing as long as you want to, no mater how much your fans will grumble.
The book is good. You can tell the author is losing interest in writing though, it showed in this book. Hopeful that the next in the series is more conclusive and toes up some more loose ends, just incase she decides to drop this series too.
