The Stars United Headquarters is gone, and the Squad is split up.

After the events aboard Klahn’s cruise vessel, Squad 096 are left with guilt and a feeling of uselessness. That is, until Klahn’s fleet shows up at the Stars United Headquarters, destroying it and causing the Squad to get scattered across the Galaxy.

Sylvia and Cylan get stranded on a planet of excruciating heat and sand. If they want to escape and get back to the Squad, they will have no choice but to get help from a Villain. But help will come at a price.

Nyphelia, Squad 096, and the rest of the Stars United are being pursued by Klahn and his immense army. Klahn won’t stop until he gets Nyphelia’s powers, but Nyphelia will not allow another member of her Squad to perish, and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the ones she loves.
To win this galactic war, the Squad must find their way back to each other, and the sisters must learn to work together if they want to stop Klahn from destroying the Galaxy.

But there is a villain within everyone. Some are just more visible than others.

Ah yes I just finished the book and you know it was good because I’m very angry (kidding about the anger lol). But like seriously that ending. I won’t say anything specific about it. Just. Mmph.

I liked Hiraeth more than Exulansis, probably in part because I’m more invested in the characters atp. Hm okay I should say actual review-y things.

Characters: Well first of all I am more familiar with the characters by now, so that was nice. Hiraeth kept the characterization consistent from Exulansis, and built upon it with the major characters. I also like the character dynamics. There are a couple instances where the characters’ actions/reactions don’t feel like they make 100% sense…but I suppose in real life people do things that don’t make sense too. Also! I have officially decided that my favorite character is Sylvia. Cylan is probably second. (Allusions to spoilers in the next statement but not outright said) Oh yeah and the character deaths…they were painful. I wasn’t really expecting that tbh.

The plot felt faster paced in this book than in Exulansis, which I liked. There is much pain, I will say that and no more about plot.

Where was I…? Oh uh the ship. Ships? Ship. (I’m writing this late at night okay.) I think there may be multiple ships? But the main ship is like slow burn fast burn idk what to tell you. I guess it’s slow burn. It is a good ship. We stan. Idk if I’m using stan correctly but I’m too tired to care.

Anyway, book was very good. Excuse me while I go cry about the fact that I have to wait to read the third book

Edit: whoopss I forgot I meant to put a content/cleanness note. There is some violence; I don’t consider it super heavy or graphic. There is a couple instances of words I consider to be curse words. The romance is pretty clean. (Very mild spoiler: there is a little bit of kissing but it’s very light and not super detailed or whatever.)

Okay, I want to start out by saying that I LOVE sci-fi in all its forms, and maybe I haven’t looked hard enough, but I don’t see many sci-fi books in the ya genera (At least, many clean ones). So I was very excited to hear about this series and I feel like this book had everything I love about the genera rolled into one!

There are a lot of things I love about this book, but there are also some things that I wish I could change.

So let’s start with the pros:

I liked how Sylvia was portrayed. I would have to say I like Sylvia the best of all the characters, so I was happy to see a different side of her in this book.

I also enjoyed all the different POVs (all except one which I’ll explain in the cons section) I said before I never liked more than three POVs in a book but I feel like Hannah Coppernoll did a good job balancing all the different voices.

The short story at the end? Made me tear up🥺 but in a good way.

And, of course, all the found family vibes were so much fun to read about! I loved seeing how the team cared for and helped each other.

Overall (for people who aren’t going to read the cons) I really like this series, would totally recommend it, and am eagerly awaiting the next book!

And that’s all for now, so on to the cons:

Also I should point out that most of my cons are 🛑MAJOR SPOILERS🛑 so read at your own risk.

The first thing is the POV of Admiral Hendrix. I liked that he had a POV, but I wish it had been in 3rd person because I had a hard time distinguishing his voice from all the others, and in my opinion, since he’s older and the only adult with a POV, it should have felt different.

Next the character deaths: I wish I had felt more connected to Zoey before “it” happened. After I read the short story I was heartbroken, but when it actually happened I struggled to emphasize with the team. Maybe if the story had appeared before the death? As for the other deaths, I didn’t feel like there was much purpose in that guy Nyphelia electrocuted, there wasn’t punishment or anything and I feel like it was glossed over mostly.

And finally, the ending. It made sense, right up until it didn’t. I could totally see Nyphelia going with Klahn, and I may even see her actually siding with him. But not right away. I think it would have made more sense if Nyphelia had gone with Klahn and just tried to escape secretly and as the story went on, maybe she would change her mind, but I think it happened too soon. But maybe it’s all an act and she’s just trying to take him down from the inside? We can always hope.
