Marriage of convenience? More like marriage of inconvenience. Especially when it turns deadly.
Ellery Cross did what she had to do to save her family from ruin. She married a man she wasn’t in love with. Worse, she married a man she knew nothing about.
But Ellery eventually learns all she needs to know about her husband. And sticking around is not an option.
As part of the Harper Security Ops self-defense and tactical training unit, Kane Ramsey spends his days teaching people how to fight back. He promises to teach Ellery the same, even if he’s the one that wants to protect her.
In a perfect world, Ellery and Kane would live happily ever after.
But she won’t be distracted by dreams of a better tomorrow. Ellery has enough to worry about right now. And getting involved with Kane would not only be foolish, it could also be deadly for both of them.
A.K. Evans is a contemporary romance author of over twenty published novels. While she enjoys writing a good romantic suspense novel, Andrea’s favorite books to write have been her extreme sports romances. That might have something to do with the fact that she, along with her husband and two sons, can’t get enough of extreme sports.
Before becoming a writer, Andrea did a brief stint in the insurance and financial services industry and managed her husband’s performance automotive business. That love of extreme sports? She used to drive race cars!
When Andrea isn’t writing, she can be found homeschooling her two sons, doing yoga, snowboarding, reading, or traveling with her family. She and her husband are currently taking road trips throughout the country to visit all 50 states with their boys.
Another gripping story in the Harper Security Ops series. These books pull me in, as all the others, but the added edge is taking them up a notch.
Ellery’s marriage is a sham, engineered as a business deal to save her father. But after eight years, she has had enough and a plan. I love her strength and determination to make a better life.
Kane meets Ellery when she arrives at Harper Security for self-defense classes. He knows there is more to her story but does not push. Will he be her bodyguard or more?
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I knew when I finished the first chapter, I was in for an emotional ride. It is one of my favorite things about this author's creativity and skill. It was easy to connect with Ellery's emotions and situation. She's made some smart decisions in her escape, but the smartest? Enlisting Harper Security Ops to assist in her self defense needs.
Okay, by now - in book 7, we know how the guys of Harper Security Ops protect and care for the people who need help. And we love it! Kane wasn't looking to be Ellery's hero, but he quickly loses the battle to stay professional where she's concerned. The connection and steamy chemistry between these two characters is entertaining and engaging, and I loved watching their relationship develop.
The twists and turns in the storyline kept my fingers flipping pages and I was at the end much too quickly for my liking. These characters stay with me, long after the read is done, and I love that. I recommend reading this series in order to get the best from these characters and stories, and avoid spoilers.
Every book in this series is addictive, emotional, and seriously entertaining. I love the originality and creativity of this author. Her works are easy to read and enjoy.
I received a free ARC, and happily leave my review.
Ellery, at 19 she made a decision that ultimately kept her family from facing humiliation. But now, after witnessing something horrible she goes on the run and she finds herself in Steel Ridge, a place that no one will associate with her, but also because of what Harper Security provides, self defence.
Kane, from the first moment he laid eyes on Ellery he knew she was different, but he didn't want to admit it to himself, and once he finds out what kind of danger she is running from he does everything he can to protect her, the woman he is now falling for.
This was a slow burn, with sweet moments between the h and H and on the edge moments towards the end

I have enjoyed every book in this Harper Security series so far and this book is simply fantastic too. It’s slightly different, once again, making for a new exciting tale where I was hooked from the first page until the last.
Kane and Ellery are a terrific couple who share more than most couples, given that Ellery is running from her criminal husband. I love how strong Ellery is and even how much stronger she becomes after running from him. The trauma she tries to put behind her isn’t elaborated fully but explained just enough. That’s another reason this book is so good, unnecessary descriptions that often appear in many stories don’t happen. Kane is an all-around fabulous guy who sees how wonderful Ellery is and his protective side comes to the fore.
There’s a plethora of emotions but honestly, there are a lot of positive ones that create such a warm, inviting atmosphere within the story. Oh, don’t worry, the old heart rate gets a crackin’ when the situation with Ellery’s husband heats up, but even then my admiration for her is immense.
The characters from Harper Security are always great to meet again, especially the girls—not sure why 🤔 maybe it’s the fact they are all strong women who have triumphed. 🤷🏻♀️ Meeting a new character, Hanna, was such a delight and I am so looking forward to reading her story. Such is the terrific writing by this author that once I finish one book I want the next as soon as possible!
I recommend this book and series to everyone. If you haven’t read any of the prior books in the series you can still read this, but honestly, they are too good not to read.
And yet again, we have another fantastic installment of the Harper Security Ops series, and this book didn't leave you wanting for anything. I really didn't think this series could keep up the great traction of these intense stories, but with every book, it proves me wrong.
Yet again, our hero is just so bloody special, with a hard exterior but a warm and loving heart. Kane is brilliant. And when Kane meets Ellery, the connection is almost instant. With Ellery running from her criminal husband, this makes for an edge-of-your-seat read. My emotions were all over the place. And although Ellery was fragile, she was bold and strong, and I loved that about her. I liked that we got just enough of the trauma to explain. I won't say more apart from that I loved this book.
This book is a fantastic read and a huge recommendation for me.

Distracted is Book 7 in the Harper Security Ops series by A.K. Evans, featuring Ellery and Kane in a gripping romantic suspense. Ellery was basically forced into a horrific marriage of convenience that was really a business deal between fathers, in order to save her dad from financial ruin. After 8 years in turmoil, she executes a plan to disappear and set up a new life in Steel Ridge, PA, home of Harper Security. She planned to take self-defense and weapons training. What she didn’t plan on was an immediate connection and attraction to Kane. Can she work with him without falling for him, knowing the mess she’s in? What will happen if/when her pass catches up to her?
I was so excited to dive back into the excellent world building of this series! Ellery is another top notch strong heroine determined to learn whatever she has to in order to protect herself, but is smart enough to accept help when she needs it! I was invested in her from the jump, and the connection and chemistry between her and Kane was just Wow!! I kept looking at the percentage on the bottom of the page, thinking this slow burn is killing me! 😂 But man, when that passion finally boiled over, it was scorching!!🔥🔥 I loved everything about watching their relationship develop. Kane was the ultimate protective, yet compassionate and loving hero. The depth of the characters is always great. The HS guys always add to the entertainment of the story through banter and action. The suspense, action scenes, and plot twists kept me riveted to the pages! And, I’m guessing Miss Hanna has a story to tell, and I am here for it!! For me, this was definitely a must read that I wish I wouldn’t have read so quickly. I’m going to miss these characters.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I received an advanced review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.
So I’ll have to confess that I’ve only read one other book in this series, however really liked meeting Kane and Ellery.
“All my dreams went out the window when I was forced to marry a criminal.”
While the blurb says it all, Ellery is forced to marry somebody she doesn’t know and isn’t that great of a guy, hence the forced marriage. After years, she finally makes a run for it and ends up in Steel Ridge, home of Harper Security Ops and Kane himself. Ellery did her homework about where she was going to stay, knowing she would be able to learn how to defend herself by taking classes at Harper Security Ops, it was defending her heart from the handsome and helpful Kane that’s going to be the problem.
It felt like we were headed in the direction of a love at first sight book, which I am not a fan of, however it ended up being more. I like that Kane had the kid gloves on, knowing Ellery was running from some pretty heavy baggage and could empathize with her not wanting Kane involved with her drama. It was a page turner for sure, with the action finally catching up with the story towards the end, which I found slightly annoying.
The book is well written and a nice slow burn. Along with Kane and Ellery, the other men from Harper Security Ops are present and accounted for. Distracted read well as a standalone with a nice epilogue to peek in and see what’s been going on.
Distracted is the seventh book in the Harper Security Ops series. Although there are interconnected characters, the stories stand on their own.
Ellery Cross was forced to make an impossible "alliance" at the age of 19 to protect her family. It's a business deal, it can't be called a marriage. She's been trapped in this loveless marriage for eight years knowing her husband wasn't a good man but she's recently witnessed something that reveals what a BAD man he really is. She knows then she can't stay.
As a member of the Harper Security Ops team, Kane works hard to train their clients in self defense and the art of staying alive. He's dealt with many beautiful, vulnerable women over the years but none has affected him like Ellery. From the moment they meet, Kane knows she's different and works overtime to keep himself separate and professional. But that doesn't work for him when he finds out what led her to walk in their doors.
Kane and Ellery were both great characters with complex emotions and big decisions to make. As always, I enjoyed catching up with the other HS, Ops team and enjoy their dynamic. The conflict in this book was a steady hum throughout and gave tension to the characters. I honestly thought the conflict came to an end a little too easily and cleanly. I craved a good showdown, I guess. Good read and a great addition to the series.
I love to hear Jason Clarke and Meg Sylvan. The both can express the situation through the words and help you feel the scene as it unfolds! Wow, this series keeps getting better and better and I think this one is in close running for my favorite in this series! I have enjoyed every book in this Harper Security series so far but this book brings something special to the story and I know it is the characters themselves that do that. I love how strong Ellery is by leaving the life that she has known for so long and going somewhere new. Going to Steele Ridge, Ellery knew she could get the training she needed to protect herself from her husband and his goonies if and when they came after her. She just didn’t expect to find Kane. Kane notices her when she walks into Harper Ops for training and couldn’t stop thinking about her. She didn’t explain her story but Kane knew he would do anything he could to protect her from whatever she needed. Ellery finally realizes that Kane is someone special but now she has to figure out how to get away from her husband permanently to be able to move forward. Can she separate herself from someone so ruthless without anyone getting hurt? If you have not read HSO, you should! These don’t need to be read in order but the characters throughout all the books intertwine so it would help to know who is who but the books don’t build off of one another!

It’s no secret that I adore this series. Or the fact that I love how every couple has a unique story to tell. Yes, there’s always some worry and a bit of danger, but that’s part of the appeal. And yet again, we have a strong woman who is determined to save herself from a misery that wasn’t her own doing, but became hers by way of sacrifice to others. And Ellery’s sacrifice is one of the biggest possible.
Ellery is doing her best to prepare for the danger coming her way now that she’s escaped, but she’s not counting on Kane. At all. He wasn’t counting on Ellery either. But he’s willing to take a chance and risk his heart just to be near her. When the truth starts to come out, he still can’t NOT want her. And she finds herself actually wanting to dream about forever with someone. Of course, they have to solve Ellery’s big hulking problem, keep her family safe, and then figure out their future together. They’re both smart and strong though, so they can definitely do it.
We also get more time with the Harper Security guys, meet Hanna, who definitely has a story of her own, and join Kane and Ellery on their path to real love. And now I have something else to look forward to: Hanna and my guesses as to who may be in her future now that Ellery and Kane have their forever!
I am loving this series by Ms. Evans. Each book is suspense-filled, gripping, well written and pulls you in with the characters and storyline. In Distracted Ms. Evan gives us Ellery, a woman that is strong, and smart but living in a marriage that is anything but full of love. Now she is running for her life and goes straight to Harper Security. She however does not tell them why she is there but is there to take self-defence courses. There she meets Kane and he is all that she can think of. Her past is revealed and the small town that she is calling home is behind her. Kane, an employee of Harper knows that there is more to what Ellery is telling him but he is a patient man. Feelings get in the way and his protectiveness takes over and the next thing he is being her personal bodyguard. They have a connection that ignites sparks that turns into an intense fire between them.
I loved how the Harper guys and girls are there for Ellery and friendships are developed. She goes from having nothing to having a circle of people that she can trust and that are there for her.
I cannot wait for Ruined to come out and to see what Ms, Evans has in store for us. Grab this gripping, he falls first,forced-proximity romance and get lost in the Harper Security world.
This is the seventh book in the series. They can be read as standalone books. The guys and their ladies from previous books do make appearances in other books that come after their book which I love. Ellery married someone to help save her family’s business. She knew it wouldn’t be easy but she never imagined it would be as bad as it is. She has a plan and now she is going to finally leave. She never imagined that she would find the help she needs and her knight in shinning armor all in the same place. Kane and Ellery are instantly attracted to each other. But its more than just lust and Kane will prove that when needed. Kane is an amazing man. He is torn about his feelings because Ellery is a client but that is how all the guys at work have meet their women. Then there is the fact that Ellery is married. But, now by choice and she wants a divorce. He is going to do everything in his power to help her. He is going to make sure she knows how to protect herself but hopes that she won’t have to. He wants to give her everything she has ever wanted. I love this series. I always look forward to reading the next book in this series. Fantastic job A.K. Evans. I can’t recommend this series enough.
A.K. Evans drew me into Ellery's plight from the first page. I found myself rooting for this strong and resilient woman to break free and find herself. It didn't hurt that she put herself in Steel Ridge and in the company of the Harper Security team.
Kane knew the first time he saw Ellery that there was something about her...he couldn't put his finger on it but he had to be in her orbit. He was thinking about her at work, outside of work...And when the details of what she had been dealing with came to light all his protective instincts came rushing to the surface.
Even though they tried to fight it, these two fell hard and fast. I loved seeing Ellery flourish, create friendships and just get to enjoy life. But her past wouldn't let go and used every manipulative tool at its disposal to get to her...
While I did find the big showdown a hair anticlimactic, I was still reading furiously because I had to know how everything would pan out. Ellery and Kane's free fall into love was had me smiling and swooning throughout. I can't wait to get back to this not so sleepy small town and see what is in store for the team next.
When Ellery escapes her marriage she knows the one thing she needs to do is learn self-defense. This leads her to Harper Security where she may get even more than she bargained for.
Kane loves his job and never mixes work with pleasure but Ellery may just change that. He needs to know why she wants to learn self-defense and to uncover the secrets he knows she’s hiding.
I loved watching their relationship develop and coming together. Gah! They were hot together! Neither of them were looking for a relationship but there was no way to deny the chemistry between them.
What I love about this series is how we get to keep following along with the other Harper security men and their amazing women as well. It’s like an amazing story that just keeps on going. Yes you can read them as stand-a-lones but the series is just so amazing I promise you will want to read them all. These books are the perfect mix of steamy romance and suspense. I can’t wait for Hanna’s story in Ruined coming up next!
This is the seventh book in this series by this fantastic author. These books just keep getting better and better the more I read. This is the story of Ellery and Kane, these two characters have an instant connection, and the chemistry is just scorching hot between them. They need to overcome some problems to find their happy ever after. This book is filled with hot and steamy scenes, suspense, action, and passion. Once you start this book, you won’t want to put the book down till you get to the last page. This is a fantastic addition to this incredible series by this author.
I received a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
A marriage of “inconvenience” more than convenience. She had to save her family so she agreed. After years with the man and learning just the kind of man he is she had to get away. Finally, after detailed preparation, she does escape. When she lands she determines to learn how to protect herself concerned her husband may someday find her.
Kane can tell something more than just basic defense training is what she is looking for. Why? As he spends more time his interest becomes more than as a client. Will he find out why she is training? Who she fears? Is there a chance for him to more than help her but to find a future with her?
A book that will capture you with her past, present, and possible future. Good characters, including Hanna whose book is next and I, can't wait. Heat, danger, intrigue, and more to keep you reading.
Come on Hanna, I'm anxious for your story. Reviewed for Words Turn Me On
Ellery was trapped in a marriage of misery. She was manipulated into a marriage when she was just a teenager and has suffered abuse at the hands of her so called husband ever since. She discovered early on that he was not what he portrayed himself as and made plans to escape. But after seeing him murder someone in cold blood, she knows she can no longer wait.
Landing in Steel Ridge she soon finds accommodation, a friend and a place to learn to defend herself. She also finds a protector in Kane. Kane cannot believe what Ellery has been out through and swears to keep her safe. But as they work together they also grow close, close enough to perhaps find solace together.
Fabulous characters, tightly crafted storyline, flaming hot chemistry and a frustrated romance writer/editor FMC. What else do you need???
I cannot wait to get stuck into Hanna's story next - she is just such a sweetheart!
In order to protect those she loved Ellery finds herself trapped in marriage to a dangerous man. She knows she needs to escape but she also knows she needs to be careful as one wrong step could have dire consequences. When she is finally able to flee she creates a new life for herself and knows that the threat is far from over so she approaches Harper Security and Kane to learn the necessary skills.
When Kane meets Ellery he is drawn to her but he also knows that there is a lot she isn’t sharing. He wants to help her gain the experience and skills she needs but with the feelings he has for her he isn’t about to let her face the situation alone.
Ellery is stronger and more resilient than even she knows while Kane gives her the strength and support to become the woman she is destined to be. A perfect mix of romance and suspense as these two captivating characters fight for the future they both deserve.
My guys from Harper Security Ops are back, and this round goes to Kane. Ellery is our heroine who got roped into marrying a man she didn't know, and it wasn't a great situation at all. It came to a head when she had to go on the lamb to stay safe, and she ended up in Kane's neck of the woods. It all started out when she signed up for self defense classes, but it didn't take long before everyone found out about her, and while that's not something she wanted, it did become the best thing to happen to her. She & Kane are perfect for each other, and thankfully it didn't take long before she acted on the sparks flying since she's never known anything good in a serious relationship & he was all that & a bag of chips. Of course with what she's running from gave me the suspense kicker I need in my life as that's my jam, so there are twists leading up to the finale which made me super happy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE A.K. Evans writing style so I'll never get enough & HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Book 7 in the Harper Security Ops series bring us the story of Ellery and Kane. Ellery does what she thinks needs to be done to help protect her family. When she finally sees her chances she leaves and ends up at Harper Security where she meets Kane. There is something about him that Ellery is drawn too but with her life in chaos, the last thing she wants to do is drag Kane into her drama. She has written off having her own happy ending but that doesn't stop her from dreaming about it. Kane is there to help women and make a pact to himself to never cross that boundary when helping them. However from the moment he meets Ellery he finds that the promise he made himself may be hard to keep. Once again this book is filled with great characters, action and romance. I love where Ellery decides to stay. As the truth comes out, Kane has to make sure he's not to distracted, but Ellery may end up paying the price. Another fantastic book in this series and I can't wait to read the next book.
Book 7 of A.K. Evans’s Harper Security Ops series is absolutely the best one yet. I know, I know...you've heard that before. But SERIOUSLY! “Distracted” features super-hot, protective, and sweet Kane and beautiful, intelligent Ellery (who is as strong and resilient as she is gorgeous). I was so excited for this story, and once again, Evans does not disappoint. The story has chemistry, danger, and all kinds of the author's special brand of romance. The side characters - the new additions as well as the recurring characters - really add dimension to the story, and I always love seeing the little cameos of beloved characters from earlier stories. Not gonna lie: I wasn’t pleased with Ellery’s parents, and they brought out my Mama Bear tendencies. It was difficult for me to get past that, but the journey toward HEA for these two was so magical. All the lip-biting, heart-tugging, super steamy good stuff here, and I’m looking forward to the next couple!!!
Would have been a 5, but a couple of things weren't very clear in the story... For example: *FMC said she was close with her family, but when we "met" the parents, it honestly felt like their relationship was strained. She didn't want to stick around them for more than a 5 minute conversation. *The rescue was kind of lackluster. The bad guys in previous books were more "terrifying" than her husband was. I was expecting him to be worse than he came across.. (SPOILER).. Yea, he killed a guy, but had she seen it more than the one time, it might have been more believeable that he was a monster.
Overall, it was a good story, but i didn't connect with this one as much as I have the others. What should have been a quick 4-5 hour read ended up taking a day because I was struggling to get into it.

Ellory and Kane were a wonderful couple to read! Just when you read a blurb for a new book and you think you know what must be going on AK Evans writes a fantastic story in a different direction! I love all of the HSO men and their stories how they find these wonderful strong willed amazing women. Woman forced into a married couldn’t be one of these, right?! WRONG!! Ellory is a selfless strong amazing woman. She totally deserves the HEA that Kane can provide for her. I honestly loved how most of this story was her healing and them falling in love with each other. The drama at the end was necessary but didn’t overshadow the love story. Fantastic narration for the audio version!! Exactly how I heard the characters in my head doing the eReader version - both of them brought their characters and side characters to life.
Ellery Cross married a man she's never met to protect her family. Unfortunately, no love ever developed between her and her husband. Now years later, she's finally found her opportunity to leave him and hope that her family stays safe. If she doesn't leave, her life will be forfeit.
A life on the run is not ideal, but Ellery has no choice. When she ends up in a small town after finding Harper Security on the internet, she's pleasantly surprised with the town and the friendly Tiny Home community she finds herself in. When she goes to Harper Security and tells Kane what she's looking for, he offers to help her and when he finds out that she's been reported as missing, his determination to help her and protect her grows more urgent.
I love the Harper Security Ops books and Kane's story was a great addition to the series. I am looking forward to Leo's story next.
I adore this series. These devoted alpha protectors are just what my heart craves from time to time. Ellery and Kane are a slow burn romance. Ellery has run from a controlling marriage. She has hidden in Steel Ridge and is attempting to build a new life. Like the women in the series before her, she is drawn to Harper Security for self defense lessons. And through learning to protect herself she meets the love of her life.
These books follow a formula. There is always a sense of jeopardy and the team always deliver an exciting rescue. It is this predictability that I love as the characters are well established and their love story solidified. And these security men have to earn their keep somehow.
If you like great suspense in your romances with instant chemistry but a slow burn that is as hot as the main feature then Distracted is the book for you! AK Evans yet again produced an on-the-edge-of-your-seat, gripping read. Ellery was everything that I have come to expect from the women in this series, she was brave, she was strong and when she was determined to break free from a husband forced upon her she did it all on her own and ended up in Short and Sweet Steel Ridge Pennsylvania, a new life a new beginning, some defence classes at Harper Security brings her into contact with Kane, the attraction is there but Kane knows there is more going on with Ellet than she is letting on, the story then shifts up a couple of gears, twists and turns at every corner all wrapped around a captivating growing romance
I knew from the prologue it was going be a good read. AK Evans knows how to pull someone into the storyline!
Ellery was forcibly married to a criminal to save her family when she was 19years old. After 8 years of marriage, she witnesses something scary and decides to run…right to Steele Creek and into Harper Security Ops to learn how to defend herself
Kane Kane Kane…oh boy this man made me swoon all throughout the book! He teaches the self defense class with Jake where he meets and is smitten with Ellery.
He’s such a gentleman being so aware of what Ellery is going through and just wants to make her happy *swoon again*
I won’t give away too much but I feel in love with this book!!
Also side note, I throughly enjoyed meeting Hanna and seeing the friendship grow with her and Ellery 🥰 So excited to read Leo/Hanna’s story!
It’s an extremely tough decision…but I think Kane and Ellery are my new favorite couple…
Ellery was forced into a loveless marriage at a very young age. She knew she had to get away from her husband and ended up in Steel Ridge. To protect herself, she started taking Self-Defense classes. And that is where she meets Kane. Circumstances come around where Ellery is forced to open up and get some personal body guard protection.
I loved this book! It is steamy, sweet, and suspenseful! Ellery and Kane are fantastic together. You can feel their chemistry come through the pages! Amazing read, and a great addition to the series!
Distracted does not describe how you are with this story, as this storyline and characters will have you completely focused and unable to put this book down. Kane stole my heart from the very beginning with his understanding, protectiveness and his whole persona. Ellery had an inner strength and her loyalty and love for her family was tremendous. Their story was filled with secrets, revelations, drama and a little chaos. The chemistry and passion between these two was intense and radiated off every page. This storyline had a little bit of everything to hold you captivated right to the very end.
