From the moment I killed that demon, I knew my world would never be the same.
If you love Good Omens by Terry Pratchett, Penryn & the End of Days series by Susan Ee, and Fallen Academy by Leia Stone this book will become your next obsession!
On a routine call to rescue humans, celestial warrior Gladriel kills a demon, a once-an-eon occurrence. And now its brethren plan to exact revenge. Despite the Almighty’s explicit order to let him handle things, after a month of his inaction, Glad feels ignored and breaks rank to fight back. But she’s expelled from Heaven for insubordination, as a result.
Glad finds herself enrolled at Morningstar Academy, a school dedicated to re-educating newly fallen angels. The core curriculum: making human lives a living hell, and compliance is mandatory. Never having encountered such radical ideas before, Glad finds her beliefs thoroughly challenged, but she refuses to capitulate. She just hopes she’s strong enough to weather the trials that will come with her defiance.
During one of her first classes, massive numbers of humans suddenly disappear from Earth and she and her new classmates are charged with discovering who is behind it. As they search for clues, she realizes these events are the beginning of an ancient prophecy foretelling humanity’s and her new home’s annihilation.
Despite her rebellion against the school’s rules, can Glad win over her new classmates and persuade them to help her stop it?

3.5 stars Having read and loved L.R.W. Lee's Sand Maiden series, I was excited to jump into a new series of her's. While I'm normally not a huge fan of urban/contemporary fantasies, I found myself really enjoying this book. The plot was exciting, the romance touching, and the author's writing style is really fun. As I said in my review of her other series, it kind of reminds me of Sarah J Maas's writing. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read and I'm excited to get into the next book of the series. Thank you to the author for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!
While on a mission with her angelic squad, Gladriel kills a demon, causing them to retaliate and injure her best friend. When Gladriel takes action against orders to avenge her friend, she is cast out, becoming a Fallen. Her friends are desperate to help her, even if it means risking falling themselves…
I enjoyed the early action scenes, seeing Galadriel’s frustration with rules preventing her from saving all humans in need. Focusing on her physical attraction for Kessien in the middle of battle got a little repetitive in the beginning but that stopped when the plot gained momentum. I was “told” by the MCs that it was a friends-to-lovers romance, but the writing felt like insta-love.
The expectations of the Fallen at Morningstar Academy posed several ethical questions. I had high hopes for broad inclusion and compassion since several characters seemed to care about all humans. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the vague descriptions of humans, the use of stereotypes, and the indifference to (and celebration of) loss of life in the final battle, especially since Gladriel and her Fallen comrades knew that those humans had been controlled by demons. Confusingly, at the same time, Gladriel and her friends wanted to save the rest of the humans in the world from the remaining events of the unfolding apocalypse.
Overall, this book was an interesting look at religious prophecy of the end of times from the angels’ perspectives—but I’m concerned about the representation of different human groups and the inconsistent messaging about human life.

The plot of this book is a tale as old as time - the battle between good and evil. The new adventures and plot twists made this an exciting read. I love the concept of the celestial warriors. Gladriel has such a big heart for her friends and for humans. Often the celestial beings are seen as being cold and withdrawn from emotions, especially to humans. The loss of life means little to those who live for eons.
Morningstar Academy was unexpected and a fun suprise. They can be quite brutal and danagerous there. I like the views on the Fallen. There is so much depth to the characters there, and it is interesting to see how they will grow. I wish there was more detail in what is going on, but I feel cursed is just the intro into a huge world and situation.
I highly recommend this book if you want to try something new. This is just the start of her series. Damned is next on my list, book 2.
I’ve always been a lover of lore and bringing those stories to life. Cursed did just that. It’s an academy of war style lore of angels and demons mixed with lovable characters and lots of action. Glad and her gang all have spunk and fire that is admirable, funny, and lovable. You want to root for them in the best way while trying to figure out what in the world is going on… literally. Excited for the rest of the series and this cast of characters to grow.
Cursed is a thought provoking journey into the heavens, that has you flying with Celestial angels, fallen angels, and demons into an exclusive academy rife with mystery.
Plot is pretty good. I wouldn't say it's a revelation (terrible pun for those who've read it), but it is good and interesting. I would say it's roughly equal plot vs character, slightly more on the plot side.
Character development is pretty good. I can't say I love the FMC, but I love the growth she started to show and the chance in mindset that seeming to be occurring in the last quarter or so of the book. I feel like the FMC being the way she is in the beginning is intentional, to show her growth throughout the series.
The overall world building was good. I would've loved if Morning Star Academy had been fleshed out bit more. I expect that will be developed more in book 2.
Prose is good with the wording being YA appropriate (no cursing). It flows smoothly and is a quick, easy read. The banter is pretty good, it felt real.
Pacing is good. I would say medium, til the last +/- 25%, then it moves faster.
I really enjoyed the unique way the heavens were set up, and find the idea of Morning Star to be intriguing.
It addresses real world issues, which I both love and don't love. I read to escape the real world, most of the time. The issues it addresses are important ones and I'm happy when I see them addressed in the lit world. I went into this one fairly blind, so I didn't expect the religious aspect to be as prominent as it was.
This a quick, easy read that I enjoyed overall. I think I'm just not in a place to love and adore books that broach some of the topics this one does. That's not an issue with the book.
If you're a fan of Angels & Demons, I think you would enjoy this.

A Spellbinding Dive into Darkness and Redemption: ARC Review of L.R.W. Lee's Cursed
L.R.W. Lee's Cursed plunges readers into a richly imagined world steeped in dark magic, ancient secrets, and the enduring struggle between fate and free will. This novel masterfully weaves a tale that will captivate fans of intricate fantasy with a penchant for morally gray characters and high-stakes supernatural conflicts.
Cursed introduces us to a protagonist burdened by an inescapable prophecy and a past steeped in shadow. Bound by an ancient magic that dictates their every step, they navigate a perilous landscape where every choice seems preordained and every alliance fragile. As the narrative unfolds, our protagonist is drawn into a brewing conflict, forced to confront the very essence of their cursed existence and the powerful forces that seek to control it. Lee skillfully builds a world teetering on the brink, populated by complex figures, mythical creatures, and a magic system that is both beautiful and terrifying. The journey is one of self-discovery, desperate survival, and the relentless pursuit of a truth that could either offer salvation or condemn all.
Lee delves deep into several compelling themes, making Cursed more than just a thrilling fantasy read. The pervasive theme of destiny versus free will stands at the forefront, as characters grapple with their predetermined paths and the courage it takes to defy them. This is intertwined with explorations of identity and self-acceptance, as the protagonist must come to terms with who they are, despite the dark circumstances of their birth or fate. Betrayal and loyalty are constant undercurrents, testing the bonds between characters and forcing difficult choices. Furthermore, the novel touches upon the corrupting influence of power and the often-blurred lines between good and evil, leaving readers to ponder the true nature of heroism and villainy.
What truly stands out in Cursed is L.R.W. Lee's exceptional world-building. The lore feels ancient and lived-in, with a depth that suggests a vast history beyond the pages. The magic system is particularly well-conceived, feeling both organic to the world and genuinely dangerous, with clear rules and consequences. I especially appreciated the complex character development. The protagonist is not a simplistic hero, but a deeply conflicted individual whose struggles feel authentic and whose journey toward understanding their curse is compelling. The supporting cast is equally nuanced, each with their own motivations and secrets, making for rich interactions and unpredictable plot turns. Lee's pacing is also a strong suit, maintaining a gripping tension throughout, balancing action sequences with moments of introspection and crucial revelations that keep you turning pages late into the night.
I give L.R.W. Lee's Cursed a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. It's a captivating, well-crafted fantasy that offers both thrilling adventure and thoughtful exploration of profound themes. A must-read for anyone seeking a darker, character-driven magical journey.
Terrific story about angels and demons and what happens when you disobey. It keeps your attention from the first page to the last. It is a cliff hanger series but so much fun to read. I would recommend this book.
This book was great. My first story about angels and demons and it captivated me. It had its little twisters and ... the ending...lets just say i want the next one.
I have read nothing about angels, demons, or the fallen. When I heard about this one, I thought about trying it. I like the concept, but there needed to be more. I understand this is the first book in a series, so I try to give leeway.
Gladriel is annoying. Normally I dislike these types of characters, but it works for this story, and I love her. She is a well-written character. I love her stubborn and sassy personality. I cannot wait to see her arc progress.
The author wrote the rest of the cast just as well. They each assist the story and Gladriel’s arc. I hope to see them and their stories progress in the series.
The author did a great job in world building. The author described Heaven as three parts. Third Heaven was where the Devine (or God) was and where the author introduced our protagonist and first half of our cast. Second Heaven is where the fallen angels go and where our second half of our cast was introduced. I liked the simplicity of third Heaven along with an elegance about it. There was a lot going on, but an uncomplicated understanding.
I wish there was more time spent with Second Heaven. We spent so much time in Third Heaven, Second Heaven and the Academy felt a little flat. I was not as satisfied. And we should have stayed in Morningstar Academy more so, instead of flipping back and forth constantly. I understood why, but at this point in the story, it felt choppy and rushed.
I enjoyed this story. I am looking forward to continuing this adventure. The pacing was quick, and the story held my interest. There were a few things I would change, but overall, the story was good.
I would recommend this to anyone who likes stories with angels, demons, young adult, mystery, religious beliefs, and religious mythology.
*I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest opinion.
You can find this and other reviews on my website:
I love angels, fallen angels, demons books; it’s one of my favorite tropes, so I was immediately attracted to this book when I read the blurb and saw the cover, that cover!!! 😍 The world building is amazing, so different from other books I have read before; the plot so mysterious and intriguing and the characters, awesome!!!, love Glad and Kessien, as well as their friends... and the new friends from the Academy are on their way to be liked as well 😉 There is so much going on on both sides, and the mystery keeps growing; after that cliffy, can't wait to read the next book!!! 🤩 Amazing start, for what promises to be a fantastic, must read series!!! ❤️
This was such a good ya book. I loved the characters and the story. This is a fallen angel academy book. I really enjoyed how this books story went. I also love how the main character acts and how she stands for what she believes. I highly recommend this ya book.
Honestly, I didn't think I was going to love this book due to the religious aspect, but as I read it, I realized it's actually really good, and I can't wait to read the rest the characters were relatable writing stile was nice there was good banter it's a really well rounded book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and to the point. It did however end on a cliff hanger, so I’ll need to get the next book immediately!
Received an ARC for review. The following is my own, honest opinion.
Cursed was a fun, fast-paced fantasy read. This was my first dive into angels/demons/fallen fantasy, and I enjoyed it immensely. Absolutely loved all of Glad's friends (celestial and fallen). It did end with a cliffhanger, and I'm looking forward to moving on to the next book.
This is the first book in the Morning Star Academy Series and it did not disappoint. From the start the FMC Gladrielle hooks you in and leaves you loving her. She is so relatable. The characters in this book have so much depth that I am excited to see how they grow throughout the series. This book is action packed and keeps you interested the whole time. Every twist and turn of events had me so invested. I always throw myself into stories and this one made me feel like I was there with Glad. I definitely recommend the YA Romantasy. It was a breather to step away from the spice I’ve been reading and doesn’t change how good the plot is.
If you love fast-paced plots, morally grey characters, and a dash of celestial rebellion, Cursed delivers! This book throws you headfirst into a world of fallen angels, deadly secrets, and an elite academy that’s anything but normal. Gladriel is bold, sarcastic, and definitely not your average heroine. The story had me flipping pages with its nonstop momentum, unexpected twists, and that jaw-dropping cliffhanger👀 The world building is unique- balancing mythology with dark academy vibe, and the stakes grow quickly! Definitely going to read book #2 cause I need answers…now!
Gladriel is the FMC we all need, and her story is captivating right from the first chapter. I was given an ARC copy of this book for my honest review and I can say I’m going straight to the next three books- no hesitation. The amount of potential this storyline has and the growth awaiting the FMC and MMC has me gasping for air.
The writing is a bit raw but it is a YA novel. So I had to mentally brace myself for the teenage mindset. Other than that, it’s been worth the read!
Gladriel kills demon and the demons come after her best friend Astread and so she's seeks revenge against the demons and so she is cast out of Heaven, but she doesn't let that break her spirit, I really enjoyed this first book
What a work of art! This book starts off with a crazy search and rescue type of scene that immediately draws you in, and continues to keep you on the edge! Lots of action and oh man that cliff hanger! I can't wait for the next book!
Just buy the whole series now! Cursed is not your typical good vs evil/ Angel vs Fallen read. It’s better! The storyline has you wanting more (in a good way) making it hard to put down! The descriptive narrative makes it easy to feel as if you are there with Glad and the others seeing what they are. As someone who always wonders what happens after the initial fallout of a MC I really enjoyed the dual POV and how it set up for the end of the book! I found the FMC Gladriel, to be extremely relatable to anyone who will always stand up for what they believe in. Be prepared to buy the entire series because the cliff hanger had me running to get the rest!
If it wasn’t for me being a full time working single mom, I could have easily read this in one sitting, the storyline was that addictive.
I did not really care for FMC and her thoughts about some things seemed askew. I thought angles care and loved the creator more than anything, but she actually seems to love people of her team more to the point of disregarding him. I know this is a fictional story, but it is so based on the Christian Bible, and then there were so many ways it was not. Totally confusing and off putting. Narrator does a nice job with this book.
Heaven, Earth, & Hell the three places that make up 'The Almighties" creation. Cherubim are warriors with wings, destined to fight the evil that plagues the humans.
Third Heaven has squads of Cherubim that are called upon when humans are under the influence or attack of demons or fallen. Second Heaven are where the fallen reside, where "The Morningstar Academy" is. The Academy teaches the fallen the three rules to become the "evil" they were destined to be. There rules pertain to humans and how to make their lives miserable, they thrive on the fear, control, anger, & sadness they create.
Gladriel is a Cherubim assigned to squadron 132 along with her partner Astread and her other squad mates Kessien, Aliyah, Jael, & Issra. They have been on a squad together for eons and Gladriel is noticing Kessien more than usual causing her best friend Astread to tease her. Gladriel achieves the ultimate "act" when on a rescue mission she kills something immortal. It causes hatred and revenge to fuel leaving herself and her friends to defend themselves against the onslaught. Revenge punishes her friend, and she does the one thing she knows, she tracks and fights the ones responsible. There is just a slight problem. She went against an order and will pay dearly for it. She now has to learn to navigate life in her new role and find a way to reverse the decision that ruined her life.
L.R.W. Lee has written a different take on the heaven and hell narrative; She collectively applies known knowledge with her own twist on the innerworkings of heaven and hell.
I enjoyed reading this book, its originality, & the emotions of the characters immerse you in the story. You feel what Gladriel feels and at some points its heartbreaking to imagine the scene before you, she is thrusted from a world she knows to one of evil and lies. You want to retaliate by just reading what has transpired from the action she chose, and I can't blame her for choosing that path. I think most of us would have done the same thing regardless of consequences. Cursed is written beautifully and I can't wait to read more of the Morningstar Academy series.
THIS BOOK HAD ME HOOKED FROM THE START! Cursed by L.R.W Lee is the first installment in the Morningstar Academy series, following the life of Gladriel, a cherub angel whose job is to fight against Lucifer’s fallen angels and demons as a celestial warrior. One day, she accidentally kills a demon (a rare feat, considering that the demons can regenerate), and is suddenly the target of all things evil. When her BFF and partner-in-saving-the-world, Astread, is harmed in her place, Glad makes it her job to avenge her bestie. The Almighty (God), having warned her against this very act, expels her from heaven, and she becomes the very thing she has spent eons fighting – a fallen angel. As she befalls the third heaven, where the celestial angels live, and joins the fallen in the second heaven, she has to go through “training” at Morningstar Academy, where the professors crush the spirits of the recently fallen and force them into living up to their name. Will Glad come to terms with her new status and conform, or will she remain steadfast in her righteous morals to protect humans? Cursed toes the line of a world-ending fantasy plot and a twinge of romance, as Gladriel navigates her new life as a fallen angel while still holding onto her love for celestial friends – and her beau! This engaging first installment of the Morningstar Academy series left me hanging – until I got the next book, that is! The pacing feels natural, and the biblical content seems accurate (compared to my short studies of the Holy Bible). This spice-free series is perfect for fans of Supernatural, The Mortal Instruments, and is a great introduction to reading for younger audiences (PG-13, most likely). If you’re unsure about reading this – trust me, IT’S WORTH IT!
I received An Advance Reader Copy from author LRW Lee. I am not what you might call within the age range for the audience she writes for as her books are meant generally speaking for Young Adults, and at age 73, I fall far outside this group, however the style, context and characters kept my interest from the very beginning. This is not the first book of Lees that I have read. Indeed, I have read most of her work for those very reasons. Her books are good entertainment, keep you thinking and can in fact often, if it is your personal nature, lead you to further research, and they are neither too challenging for young readers or dumbed down to them.
This is the story of Good and Evil, Angels and Demons, the Almighty and Lucifer and Heaven and Earth. We first meet Glad(riel) a female member of a fighter squadron of Angels under the direction of Archangel Michael, who are tasked with fighting Demons and stopping the chaos they create for humans. We also meet her closest friends, and especially become interested in her best friend and her love interest.
Glad managed a feat almost unheard of, and kills two Demons then goes against direct orders from the Almighty. The consequences are disastrous and as a result she is banished from (Third) Heaven stripped of a set of wings and lands in Second Heaven.
Second Heaven is where we are introduced to Morningstar Academy and is a horror to Glad because it seems to be the antithesis of everything she believes in. She is put into unimaginable shame and despair and even forced to watch as a battle takes place to wipe out a large population of The Almighty’s favourite people.
How will it end? Will she confirm to Second Heaven standards? Will her friends rescue her back to her place with them? Lee does not give it away but ends in a sudden CLIFFHANGER! Loved it!
eview It is Angels vs Demons on steroids! Two warrior Angels who have known each other, and fought side by side against evil for eons, finally realize their love for each other but is it too late. You see Glad has gone her own way and revenged the wounding of her best friend by killing the demons who hurt her. Unfortunately this was after the Almighty warned her that he would be the one to dole out the punishment and that she should not let vengeance enter her heart. Because she disobeyed him she was shorn two wings , deemed a fallen Angel and was sent to the 2nd Heaven, ruled by Lucifer. Her friends, including Kessien vow to find a way to bring her back . Glad has managed to find some friends in 2nd Heaven and after seeing a prophecy come true that Glad had read about seek answers on how to proceed. Kessien and others meet her and agree to look for the prophecy in Heaven if that will help her to survive. This was a very interesting story so far that has many biblical themes and leaves you thirsting for more as it ends with a cliffhanger.
