Called Out: 100 Devotions for LGBTQ Christians

Rate this book
The experience of growing up "different," coming out in a disapproving environment, having one's identity and relationships questioned or downright rejected shapes the faith of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer Christians in ways those outside the community cannot fully understand. LGBTQ Christians need spiritual resources that speak to the unique joys and challenges of their journey.

E. Carrington Heath offers one hundred devotions on such topics as authenticity, coming out, relationships, chosen family, religious trauma, and more to nurture the faith of our LGBTQ siblings and help friends, family, and allies grow in understanding and faith.

Fully affirming of all, sensitive to the diversity of the entire LGBTQ community, and backed by theological depth, these devotions will lift the reader up and empower them for the work of transforming the world.

I was given this volume of devotions by a dear friend and pastor to pass along to my gender-nonconforming offspring. I found the devotions articulate, accessible, engaging, and thought-provoking, and the author's journey inspiring. As an ally, I cannot claim to fully understand the experience of LGBTQ Christians, but I found that a great deal of what I read applied to my own faith journey as well as my path toward a better understanding of the LGBTQ+ experience. Highly recommended for those who identify as LGBTQ+ - Christian or non-Christian - and anyone who loves them.

Really appreciated this. Better than I expected it to be; unsure what I expected. Grateful.

I’m a progressive Christian minister of a church in the Bay Area, and loving E. Carrington Heath’s new book of devotions for queer Christians and allies. Heath is so clear, faithful, direct, practical–this is theology that saves lives. I plan to give it to put a copy in our church library, another on the Mental Health Ministry book cart, and gift it to LGBTQ members of the church as they join.

There are many wonderful devotional resources available on the market. This one is unique, however, it that it is looking at Scripture with a queer eye. It seeks to look at biblical texts and what they have to say and how they can support LGBTQ Christians on their faith journey. Having an author is is queer helps to give legitimacy to the reflections. The devotions are short enough to be practical for use to start the day, but contain enough depth to challenge the heart and mind to see God in new ways. I greatly benefited from this resource, and am sure I will come back to it again in the future. I would highly recommend this to any member of the LGBTQ community or those who seek to understand Scripture in some new ways and gain new insights.

*I received this book for free through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Dull & added nothing to the discussion.

This book is made for a specific audience. A lot of statements are incorrect. One part says to fear God when it is supposed to translate to revere (see Strong's Concordance). I am sure some people might benefit from the book. But it uses several bibles and seems to adjust the verse to what they want to say. All-in-all, the book wasn't a good fit for me.

(The file also downloaded so you have to read this scrolling the pages up & down. Instead of it zoomed in and flipping pages left & right).
