Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
The Queen of storytelling delights us all with a collection of letters written by her ever faithful dog Bob's, of course he had his author to help him. Bob's the fox terrier is very charming and philosophical in his own way, although quite gullible to Sandy's influences. Sandy is Bob's faithful friend and part of Enid Blyton's Rouges' Gallery. Sandy seems to get a laugh at Bob's expense in some cases but Bobs still manages to remain just as curious about life and its goings on. I love Bob's tomorrow is another day and adventure outlook. The NewYears resolution that Bobs makes at the end of the book is priceless. The letters chronicle everyday happenings in and around the household and are just so wholesome. Enid Blyton wrote these letters on behalf of Bob's and they were published weekly in Teachers World from 1929-1945. What a pleasure it would have been to eagerly await the next adventure of Bob's and his sidekick.
This is the first Enid Blyton I have read since the days of my childhood when I enjoyed reading the Famous Five series. I was not aware of her stories about Bobs, but what is not to like about a story involving a mischievous little fox terrier dog and his friends? Unlike some of Enid's stories I think these letters from Bobs seem to have stood the test of time well, and they put a well needed smile on my face. The cute illustrations by Alice McKinley also make this little book such a fun read.
Absolutely adorable bedtime story for children! This book is broken into perfectly palatable morsels, as Bobs writes letters to his children. The letters are the perfect length to read one or two before bedtime!
Such a cute little book, I love the letters Bob writes! I love the photo of Bob in the back, bought a tear to my eye. Highly recommended for a cute little read for any dog lovers.
