Revolution World: The Illuminator Series: Book 2

Rate this book
Abigail’s fight to save the planet continues in the sequel to Homeworld. She and her friends travel the world, adventure in space and time, explore a strange new world, and discover an ominous deadly stellar remnant that may spell doom for them all. Using teamwork, their smarts, and Abigail’s special abilities, they bravely face strange aliens, ruthless foreign leaders, and her brother, Eliot, who is abusing his newly acquired powers.

Abigail and her crew visit a new world they wish to colonize, but quickly realize that won’t be possible if the local life is out to kill anyone who initiates first contact with them or threatens their coveted and scarce supply of underground water. Their Taurian friend, Tkla, has become infected with deadly microbes from the water and is experiencing vivid premonitions of his people’s colony fleet spiraling into a mysterious source of darkness. Finding and rescuing the Taurian convoy may be the most dangerous mission Abigail and her friends embark on.

On Earth, Abigail’s younger brother uses his new abilities to take a different path than hers. He is not interested in saving the world, and his big sister is not there to keep an eye on him because she’s busy with her space missions and her crusade to protect the planet, which is on the verge of civil and global war. Abigail’s efforts to unite the world may very well backfire, leaving the people of Earth more divided than ever.

I received a copy from the author in exchange for a fair review.

While I enjoyed Homeworld, I liked this one even more! Given the characters and the world-building is established going in, we have a tighter story with higher stakes.

This book is a New Adult, meaning it’s a bit deeper thematically and more hard sci-fi focused than a YA, but it still retains a younger cast and a message for the readers, the message here being environmentalism!

As such, there is a significant environmental focus in the book, which is imparted directly in the plot and more subtly as well. I'm down for anything in that vein, so I enjoyed these aspects immensely.

The characters were great - we follow Abigail again, the main character from the last novel, as she attempts to do the right thing but ends up over her head. I will say sometimes Abigail is too good - while she makes mistakes, they’re more external mistakes than internal conflicts. And while the characters have fun banter, they could have a bit more conflict between them too. The way government functions in the novel is also a bit simplistic, but that might also be the new adult aspect, as I’m always wanting more politics in stories geared to younger readers, which they likely would find dull. As such, I think this novel (just like the first) is a great way to ease younger readers into these more complex topics.

One of the most interesting things about this novel is the approach to the villain. The book seems to suggest that the difference between superhero and supervillian is often a matter of greed, that it isn’t the power that’s the problem, but what you intend to do with it.

As with the first book, the writing is solid, moving at a solid clip with good descriptions and it’s easy to follow and understand. There’s also a lot of fun allusions and references, like to Star Trek and Jurassic Park.

The book also brings in some new aliens with an interesting worldview and plans. These people are going to tie into the third book, I’m assuming, so I’m interested in how that will pan out.

Overall, a great sequel!
