Welcome to beautiful Blue Lake. Nestled peacefully in the Adirondack Mountains, it’s the kind of place where nothing bad ever happens - until now.
Summertime in Blue Lake Village. Celia Strong arrives with her daughter Katie to start a new life as the owner of Ye Olde Ice Cream Shoppe, leaving personal tragedy and her old life as a NYPD forensics expert behind. As Celia settles in, she bonds with fellow year-rounders, like eccentrics Helen and Henry from the antiques store, unflappable Lorna Lucas at the history museum, fun-loving Richard and Daniel from the art gallery, and, of course, the distractingly handsome Cal at the country diner.
It's just a typical Friday when a tourist bus pulls up in town with seven passengers on board, one of them dead. The six remaining passengers each hide a secret. Is one of them the killer? As connections among the riders emerge, acting Sheriff Denny DeWalt turns to Celia - with the help of the rest of 'the block' - to solve the case.
Normal, every day life characters for the most part. The protagonist, Celia, is good at solving mysteries and has an agenda of her own. Sheriff DeWalt isn’t the smartest, and honestly, it doesn’t make sense that he just let Celia take over the case, even if it is in a background kind of way. There were a lot of characters in this book and a list of who’s who would have gone a long way to making it less confusing.
The plot wasn’t bad and had a nice twist, but the way the author presented the information wasn’t the best. Great idea on who murdered who and why but more depth to the story would have made an average story become a 4-star story.
The author’s writing style screamed first book. It was written in a simplistic way with too much filler and not enough plot. She had random chapters dealing with different issues that didn’t really connect to the murder. An example would be Katie’s (Celia’s daughter) blog. It all became distracting and took away from a decent plot.
Even with the unexpected twist to the story, I doubt I would continue with the series. It just didn’t work for me.
My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are my own.
I liked the characters they were diverse, a little wacky as small town folks seem to be and full of surprises. I especially liked Celia a recently widowed mother who’s moved away from the city to upstate New York, opened an ice cream shop and started over with her teenaged daughter. She is bright, competent, intelligent, compassionate, willing to help when needed and brave. The mystery is an intriguing puzzle. Limited suspects or so it seems, a possibly shady character as a victim and a very inexperienced sheriff. Makes for a puzzling and all hands on deck investigation. What was a bit frustrating at times for me was the constant skipping back and forth of narrators. One or two while not my favorite reading experience is ok but there seems to be a pov from every character. It’s a bit confusing to read through at times. It’s a slow build but once you get to the reveal it’s worth the wait. A very surprising conclusion. And then there’s the little info bomb dropped right before roll credits. I’m definitely down for another book in this series! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am liking this series so far!!!! Celia has moved to Blue Lake to get a fresh start with her daughter Katie from upstate in the city. After Celia's husband was killed in an undercover assignment. Celia got a settlement so she leased an old ice cream shop in a vacation town and rented a whole house, cause she really wanted out of Astoria. As the town is getting ready for the 4th of July Celebration, there is alot of activities going on. Trade fair, music, boat cruises, parade and fireworks!! The ice cream shop is packed with locals and tourists, the history museum next door has tour buses come in town and park in front to draw attention to the museum. But this time the bus brought more than just tourists attention, A bus of suspects than Celia and acting sheriff Denny DeWalt to figure out Who? and Why? It took the surrounding businesses to take part in the investigation before the outside state police came in to take over. The bus brought a rich crooked, bad business man that cheated, deceived and swindled money from a lot of people and foundations, banks, charities. It had finally caught up to him, especially when he had hand picked the people to ride the bus with him along with his assistant. There was alot to unravel!!!! Now you have to get this book to find out. I ended staying up late to find out how it all turned out!!!!
Blue Lake sounds like a beautiful town to visit and/or live. Celia Strong was a forensics expert with the NYPD. After her husband is killed she decides that she and her daughter, Katie, need a change of pace and change of scenery. She takes the plunge and moves to Blue Lake where she has re-opened a local ice cream shop with some much needed improvements. Ye Olde Ice Cream Shoppe is off to a good start when a tour bus pulls up with tourists. However, things take a nasty turn when one of the riders is found dead on the bus. Sheriff Dean DeWalt is the new sheriff and he is definitely inexperienced and young, so Celia offers to assist him. The whole community gets in on the action as they try to solve the mystery. This was a clean well written mystery with plenty of suspects to choose from. The author uses several red herrings that will lead you in a different direction and then take another sharp turn as you realize that all of the passengers on the bus have some secrets. I was quite surprised when the mystery was solved. There is a complete curveball thrown in the end that will give you a little more background about Celia, and I assume, is setting us up for the next book in the series. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Thank you to BookSirens and the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A very good entry into the cozy mystery realm. Celia Strong and her daughter Katie move to Blue Lake in the Adirondaks to get a fresh start after her police officer husband is killed. They open an ice cream shop and are also hosts to the morning block coffee get together. After a decent opening business looks promising as the tourist season swings in to full force. A few days later a painting goes missing from the art gallery down the street. Acting sheriff Denny Dewalt enlists Celia's aid in solving the theft. as she used to be a forensic investigator in New York. The case is quickly closed and things get back to normal. But one Friday morning a tour bus that is parked in front of her neighbor's store ends up with a dead body on board. The deceased was a wealthy but unscrupulous character. The acting sheriff requires Celia's help again and this time the whole block steps up in various ways. Can they solve the case before the big city cops come to take over? Read and enjoy.

This started off pretty good. I actually really enjoyed the back and forth between narrators. I also enjoyed the way Celia solved the crimes, based on knowledge from her previous life as a forensics expert. I liked how she showed the Chief the different steps she took to come to a conclusion. I also liked the characters around town, the diner owner and the various store owners and how they held a morning meeting at the ice cream shop. I'm excited for Celia to become a more prominent member in the community,
The first book in the series starts with Celia and her daughter Kate relocating to Blue Lake, NY from their previous location closer to NYC. Celia has purchased an ice cream shop after her husbands death. She is looking forward to the summer crowd and looks forward to serving a tour bus that arrives and parks outside her shop. Eight passengers arrive, but only seven get off the bus. There are some good twists and turns and I am looking forward to the next one. There were parts of this book that dragged, but overall a good read.
Ye Olde Ice Cream Shoppe is open for business – what could be better than this in the tiny town by Blue Lake. After the death of her husband, Celia and her daughter Katie move to northern New York and settle down for some good old peace and quiet. However, once the Summer season starts, and things get busy, a tourist is found dead on one of the buses. All of the passengers seem to be hiding something, and it is up to the new acting sheriff to solve the murder. With the help of ex-forensics expert Celia, can he sort through the ever-mounting clues? Unlike other cozy mysteries, Blue Lake Cozy Murder Mystery Series takes advantage of several business owners to solve the mysteries. I love that twist. Next Stop, Murder is the first of this series. Hadely Knox does a wonderful job intertwining subplots into the main story line, and excels at character development. Can’t wait to read the other books of the series.
This was an interesting story, but I gave it 4 stars as it was constantly switching who was telling the story. I do want to read more by this author to see if this style continues. Once you get used to it, it was an enjoyable read. I'm also wanting to hear more of the backstory on the main characters. I particularly loved reading this as it takes place in the Adirondacks and I live about 1.30 hours away. Things were familiar to me.
Celia Strong, now an ice cream shop owner, is called upon to use her previous skills as a NYPD consultant to help the new Sheriff in town to solve a murder. The book draws on several points of view and then after introducing the town characters, the murder occurs. This was a good introduction and I want to read more in the series. If you like cozy mysteries, you can't go wrong with this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it was the first I've read from this author. I liked that the story is told from multiple POV, which makes the book more unique and gives more insight into each character/suspect. Mild spoilers ahead --- I loved the building relationship between the former NYPD officer and the very new interim sheriff, as it was a 'take him under my wing' type of relationship with possibly a future love interest???? The character development was well thought out, and the plot was quite complicated but delivered in a unique way. This will not be the last book I read from this author, and I loved at the end of the book how she made a Segway into next in the series. That made me want to purchase Book #2 immediately to start reading it immediately. I received an Advanced Reader's Copy in return for my honest opinion of the book.
I enjoyed this book although I would have liked more of a back story on some of the characters. Celia Strong comes across as a lovely person who only wants to help others. I was worried that she would be annoying and be seen as a busybody. Celia moves to Blue Lake from New York with her daughter to start a fresh after her husband dies. She used to work for the NYPD and starts to help the local police find the killer when a murder is committed. Once I got used to each chapter being from either a different POV or from a location I found it easy to follow and read fairly quickly. Haven’t read anything from this author previously but will look out for the others in the series. Overall a good murder mystery that kept me entertained.

When Celia Strong's husband is killed in the line of duty, she leaves behind her job as a police officer and forensics expert to start a new life for her and her daughter Katie in Blue Lake Village on the Adirondack Mountain. She opens the Olde Ice Cream Shoppe and looks forward to a peaceful life and tourist who come to Blue Lake to enjoy the scenery and small town. That is until a bus with 7 passengers pull in and before they can all return one passenger is found dead on the bus. Unfortunately the sheriff of Lake Village is new and inexperienced. Celia steps in to help guide him with the help of her daughter, friends and other store owners. Cute mystery that I enjoyed and will read more in the series. Great mystery with several suspects because everyone had a reason for wanting the victim dead. Easy read that flows. Looking forward to the next book.
An interesting 'cozy mystery'. I really liked how each chapter of the book was from a different person.
Set in a touristic quaint town in the Adirondacks that was a bit derelict but is now thriving thanks to several small businesses. Celia and her daughter move to run the Ice Cream parlor after Celia's undercover cop husband is murdered. There is a back story there that will be pertinent as this book is a part of a series. However each book is excellent as a standalone.
The murder is on a bus and several people are implicated as the group of tourist owner businesses try to solve the puzzle of the crime.
Thoroughly entertaining. A good read.

Told from several points-of-view, Next Stop, Murder is a great first book in the Blue Lake Murder Mystery series. At first, I was confused by what was going on at the beginning of the book. Then, I realized the author was setting stage, so-to-speak. We were being introduced to the townsfolk and main characters. Celia is a wonderful character and so is her daughter, Katie.
Once the reader met everyone, the author moved forward with the murder mystery. The author did a great job setting up the mystery. Several suspects rounded out the story nicely. I enjoyed watching Celia use some of her forensics training to assist the interim sheriff. I’ll be moving on to the next book in the series.
Next Stop, Murder is set in a town in the Adirondack Mountains. Celia has moved to Blue Lake with her daughter Katie after a tragedy in New York. Celia's taken over an ice cream shop, which is a big change from her previous life as a NYPD forensics expert. But when a body is found on a tour bus, Celia finds herself drawn into the investigation.
This did feel very much like a first book in series because there's a lot of set up work being done alongside the murder plot. It's got an interesting narrative style though, with the narration moving around as well as diary entries from Katie, and articles from the local press. The mystery isn't that complicated, but it worked well and I enjoyed the book enough that I'll be checking out the second in the series to see if those first-book symptoms have cleared up.
Celia has recently bought an ice cream shop, and she and her daughter Katie have just moved to the small town of Blue Lake. She’s a retired NYPD detective, but moved for a fresh start after her husband, also NYPD, was killed. The Acting Sheriff is a brand new deputy who got the position by default. As thefts and a murder rock the town, Celia steps in behind he scenes to help and guide him, with the help of the other 5 store owners on the block. A great testimony of all that can be accomplished when everyone pulls together! I received a free copy of this book from BookSirens and write this review voluntarily.
Next Step Murder, is Book 1, in A Blue Lake Cozy Mystery, by Hadley Knox. I throughly enjoyed this cozy mystery book. I thought the present author did an magnificent job of laying the background of the main characters. I believe the mystery was set up very well.
Celia and her daughter, Katie, are beginning life again after the murder of their husband/father. Besides the murder, there was an art theft for acting Sheriff Denny DeWall to solve… with Celia's steady help.
I have book 2, Deadly Sails loaded in my kindle to be read next…
I received am advanced readers copy from book sirens and I am leaving my review voluntarily.

I received an Advanced Reader copy from Book Sirens for my review. I requested a copy based on the series title Blue Lake Murder Mystery. Picturing an idyllic small town and a pretty lake. I flew through the novel trying to figure out who committed the murder. Everyone was a suspect at some point. The characters are down home genuine people who care about each other and the community. Celia, the main character, is an insightful woman. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it is published. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, you will love Next Stop Murder!
I enjoyed the book, but I almost gave it four stars because of the multiple narratives from the various characters. It would flow so much better coming from the main protagonists, not from everyone. I did not enjoy that. It makes the story somewhat choppy. Nevertheless, the story and the rest of the writing worked out great. Not sure if I will read more from this author, but it was an easy read with wonderful characters.

A man is murdered on a bus. Celia, a former forensic analyst and now a ice cream shop owner, takes the lead in this investigation. The story is nice. This could have been a great read but I didn't enjoy the book as much as I expected. I like the writing style, it is very fluent and easy to read. The chapters are very short and you get the story 'told' by different POV's and that makes everthing confusing and difficult to follow. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.
This is a good introduction to the town of Blue Lake. Celia is a former NYPD forensic analyst who moves to Blue Lake to escape her past. Her daughter, Katie is finishing her junior year of high school and is uncertain about the move. The story is told by multiple people in the town and that makes it more difficult to read. But there is a murder and the townspeople are all interested in getting to the bottom of it for their own personal reasons. So who is the murderer? Read it and find out. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The adorable cover of this book drew me! Who could pass up an ice cream shop in the idyllic village of Blue Lake and a murder to solve? This was a very fun cozy mystery. I had some trouble getting started, as the story is told from a number of different points of view and the chapters are very short. Once I got into the style, however, I found the characters and humor to be delightful. The author has conjured up an interesting mystery and I highly recommend. Ice cream! Mystery! More ice cream!!! Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2025 Next Stop, Murder - Blue Lake book 1
By: Hadley Knox
I want to go to the town of Blue Lake. It felt real. I can visualize smelling the flowers, seeing art, shopping, historical reenactments and that most important element…ice cream! Mmm hmmm!
Received as an arc, the community element was written well; as was the mysterious murder!
The author wrote great characters, and included the characters’ feelings & emotions. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it this & look forward to more in the series.
The first 1/4 of this book was just introductions to the town & the residents of Blue Lake. I did enjoy the daughter’s journal entries. She’s funny and reads like an authentic teen & not one of the whiney & over emotional teens you see in some books.
Once the murder happened the pace picked up and the crime solving and ending made up for the slow beginning. I am interested in seeing where this story goes next!

This book has all the pluses of a cozy mystery – small resort town setting, great cast of side characters, smart protagonist, twist-and-turns mystery and surprise ending. It also has a touch of police procedural with the protagonist being an ex-NYPD forensic analyst. Great story line. Highly recommend.

"Next Stop, Murder" book 1 to the "Blue Lake Cozy Murder Mysteries" by Hadley K. Knox is a good start to a new series. However, the end was like several endings that you don't know which one will be the last one. It was, okay we're done. Wait now. Or, maybe now. Oh, okay we're done.
The mystery was interesting. I kinda had an idea about who could be the murderer but at the same time I kept rethinking what I was thinking. In the end I was right but I had no idea what the motive was.
Celia's husband was killed in the line of duty and she was a NYPD forensics expert. She just wanted a quiet life as an ice cream shop owner in a small town, but it doesn't turn out that way once a tourist is murdered. She helps an inexperienced acting sheriff interrogate the murder suspects along with the help of some other shop owners in town as well as her daughter and her employees. Entertaining story and a good start to the series.
After the death of her NYPD husband. Celia Strong, who worked in forensics, moves to a small town and opens a ice cream shop. Soon she is helping the local Sheriff solve crimes. Including murder. I like how each chapter is from a different townsfolk perspective. Good book.
