Camry MacKeage has absolutely no intention of telling her parents that she left her job as a NASA physicist for the small-town life of a dog-sitter—which is why she's spending the holidays alone in coastal Maine with her furry friends, Tigger and Max.
Unfortunately, her irresistibly handsome rival, scientist Luke Pascal, accidentally spilled the beans. Now he's on a mission from her mother to tempt Camry home for the family's annual winter solstice celebration. But Luke is hiding his own secret, and he'll need a little bit of magic to earn Camry's trust...and a whole lot of mistletoe to seduce his way into her heart.
Hey guys its Jessica. Sorry I’ve been MIA for so long. I apologize for the long overdue wait for Janet’s next book. You’ve all been very patient and loyal fans that she loves. She has been working on this book over the last year and a half while dealing with her battle with cancer. It saddens me to say that she peacefully lost this battle this past weekend while her family was by her side. I apologize if this feels sudden, she was a very private person even to her family. And she truly thought of all of you as her family. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Janet Chapman is the author of twenty-two contemporary and magical romance novels, all of which are set in her beautiful state of Maine. She lives in a cozy log home on a beautiful lake with her husband, surrounded by an eclectic assortment of wildlife that she finds both entertaining and inspiring. Probably best known for her Highlander Series (a saga of twelfth century warriors rebuilding their clans in modern-day Maine that now spans three generations), Janet also has two spin-off magical series (Midnight Bay & Spellbound Falls) and several contemporary family series set on the coast and in the mountains. With over three million books printed in six languages, her stories regularly appear on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller’s lists.
When she’s not writing (well, when she should to be writing but isn’t), Janet and her husband are traveling the state in their camper throughout all four seasons; hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and generally rubbing elbows with Mother Nature while always keeping an eye out for colorful new characters—human and beast—to put in her stories.
I am going to say this straight out of the gate, so there are no surprises later: this is not a positive review, and I did not enjoy this book.
In retrospect, there were a lot of warning signs that I probably wouldn't enjoy this book. The story employs one of my least favorite plot devices ever (nosy meddling mother sends supposed man of daughter's dreams to find her and bring her back to the bosom of her loved ones). The heroine shares her name with a Toyota. There's a weiner dog on the cover. Really, I'm not sure what I thought about this book would align with my interests, but there you have it.
Camry MacKeage is a basket case when we first meet her. She's in the middle of an existential crisis perpetuated by email correspondance with a French scientist who, somehow, makes her doubt everything she's been working on for pretty much her entire life. She figures the best way to deal with all of this whatnot is to quit (get fired) from her job, move back to Maine, and set up shop babysitting dogs and bartending on the weekends. While she's at it, she's not going to contact her family or anything, which is probably not what most people would do, but one fact the characters in the story had trouble understanding is that Camry is an adult and does not have to check in with Mommy and Daddy every time something goes wrong.
Alas, because she did not check in with Mommy and Daddy, Mommy and Daddy decided to send Luke Pascal Renoir, the dude on the other end of the angsty emails, to check on her, and (unbeknownst to him) to win her heart in the process. Because everyone knows, when you're a lady and things get tough, obviously you NEED a MAN to come in and sort things out for you. Get my swooning couch ready, will you?
Turns out Luke isn't just aggressive professionally, he's pretty much a douche in person; for whatever reason, he and Toyota can't keep their hands off each other and a whole bunch of really awkward scenes result from that. Throw in Fiona, Camry's niece who's actually from the future sort of, but not really, and a grizzly old prospector/relative, and somehow these two end up married and trudging through the woods, looking for a satellite that fell out of the sky and is the source of all the original consternation between them.
I didn't buy into the relationships between the characters in this book in the slightest. For someone as smart as Camry is, she doesn't know a damn thing about people. Luke wins my vote hands-down for the Smug Bastard Award of 2009. I think these people would drive each other crazy; they'd have to have sex nonstop or else they'd kill each other. I think it was about the time that Luke decided that the reason Camry was still a virgin was because she didn't want the possibility of children distracting her from her work and Camry corrected him and said no, I just want to marry who I want because the magic made my sisters marry dudes they didn't choose because they got pregnant that I wanted to give this book a long journey into the night.
Are there folks out there who would enjoy this book? Sure. Maybe it was the writing style, maybe it was the story, maybe reading some of the other books in the series would help, but as it stands right now I don't think I want to wander this little garden path any further.
Rating: 2 Stars!! Review: This was my first time reading a book by Janet so i wasnt sure what to expect but i have to say i expected so much more then what this book ended up being. It was such a slow start for me that i didnt end loving it.
The Character were fun and interesting to read about. Camry was my favorite despite her wishy washyness about telling her parents about her career change.
The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually in Maine while reading especially when the scenery was described.
Overall an OK Christmas Romance but would of been better if it picked up from the beginning. I will read more Romances by Janet in the future but i hope all her other books arent like this one was.
I know a lot of people have comfort reads, beloved books that they reread, knowing they are going to bring guaranteed satisfaction and that warm, fuzzy feeling of revisiting old friends. I don’t do rereads (too many books, too little time), so Janet Chapman’s books became my comfort reads – guaranteed to be comfortable, satisfying, feel-good reads. I always knew what I would be getting, and now it’s over. *tear*. Where will I get my comfort from now?
My only disappointment with this one is it wasn’t the holiday novella I expected it to be. A Highlander Christmas read like a straight instalment in the series. Camry, the last of Greylen and Grace MacKeage’s unmarried daughters finally meets her match, with a little help from her family – past, present and future – and a couple of dogs! (*sigh* I really am going to miss these fun, whimsical books.)
There was no reunion of previous characters – in fact most of them don’t even make an appearance in this book, and those that do only do so briefly. I was hoping for the chance to see them all one last time. A final goodbye, if you will, and I didn’t get it. *sob* Lucky for me, there is a spin-off series (Midnight Bay), so maybe I’ll get to revisit old friends that way.
This is the conclusion to the Highlanders of Pine Creek series. (It's not a standalone and tries to wrap up open plot points from previous books.) It features 2 rocket scientists - Camry and Luke - and follows a rivals to lovers trope. Set in December in the run up to the holidays, the book's message is to turn off your analytical brain so you can listen to your heart. Both scientists need to learn how to believe in unconditional love and miracles. There's magic and time travel. It's very cheesy at times. (If it weren't the final book in a series that I had committed to, it's unlikely that I would have finished the book.)
This is my first Chapman and had a lot of characters from her other Highlander book. I still followed the story easily enough. The plot has lotsa magic and time-travel with repeated references to miracles. Add in several dashes of humor and A Highlander Christmas was a pleasant light read. It didn't feel especially "Christmassy" and tension was minimal because with all the magic, time-travel and miracles, you knew everything was going to work out. Of course, you know that in Romancelandria but sometimes you're more on the edge of your seat. It was a nice love story of two scientists -- Camry who needed to stop running from her family's "Magic" and Luke who needed to accept that the Magic existed.
This book was seriously the worst. I didn’t realize it was a part of a series I had to be familiar with so that was bad of me. I wished there was a recap or an introduction to the characters. You would have no clue this was a series until you already are reading it or if you googled. It wasn’t revolving around Christmas so much as it was the winter solstice. I’m here for Christmas. The plot is pretty much that two rocket scientists need to find a crashed satellite, fall in love within two weeks, travel to a new state with dogs they are dog sitting (lol wut, why even throw this dumb ass detail in), and magic is involved and oh so is time travel LOL. Like get out of here, I can’t. This was like paranormal, holiday, and romance and the shit just didn’t work for me. It was a page turner. I will admit that. It was so bad that I wanted to wrap it up sooner than later so I could move on. I’m happy I finished it because I had to wrap up the madness lol. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Camry, a rocket scientist like her mother, fears the magic that seems to inflict everyone in her family. After losing her job at NASA from stress and lack of focus, no thanks to another scientist in France, a man who questions one of her formulas through email and he just happens to be right, Camry flees and secrets herself away in the small coastal town of Go Back Cove.
Then a handsome stranger shows up, and Camry finds herself forced by the magic she fears to reevaluate her life. But Camry soon discovers that this stranger is not actually a stranger at all, but the very scientist whom Camry had the unfortunate pleasure of passing emails with--Lucian Renoir, or rather Luke Pascal. Camry and Luke realize that there's no point in fighting the magic, for Providence will have it's way.
When I pick up a Janet Chapman book I know I'm going to get something special. Something filled with magic and a sweetly sensual romance. I'm going to get two people falling in love with fun and witty dialogue along the way. And in A Highlander Christmas I got just that. This one is another of her wonderful Highlander novels Starring Camry MacKeage, one of the seven daughters of Greylen and Grace MacKeage who began this delightful series in Charming the Highlander.
Another lighthearted tale by Janet Chapman. Just right for this holiday season to brighten your day and warm your heart! BELIEVE IN THE MAGIC!
Janet Chapman is one of those authors who doesn't write a bad book. But that being said, she doesn't write a GREAT book, at least in my opinion. She's predictable in that you know you will enjoy the story but it won't be a keeper shelf addition or something you will rave over for days.
A Highlander Christmas holds to that theory quite well. Its the story of Camry MacKeage and Luke Pascal Renoir. If you haven't read the entire balance of the series, this book probably will seem not only far out to you but maybe even leave you shaking your head. Pretty much its imperative you have read the first umpteen novels before this one. I would classify this as more of a sweet romance than anything, although there are intimate scenes. To me the romance aspect of the book seemed a bit rushed, along with trying to realistically reconcile a 32 year old female being a virgin. Its possible I know but not probable. They literally fell in love/lust within a few pages. (Add to that the back cover depicts Camry as looking more like a 14 yr old than a 32 yr old and that really ramps up the ick factor)
I'm definitely NOT saying "don't read this". Its not a bad book, its just not a great book. If you need something to get you out of a reading slump, or maybe to pass the time in a waiting room this is probably going to fit the bill.
Camry MacKeage has suddenly stopped becoming a rocket scientist in favor of being a dog walker and a bartender. Not that she'd ever tell her parents. As far as they know she's still locked away in her lab, being one of NASA's top scientists. So imagine her parents surprise when Luke Pascal shows up on their doorstep and tells them that Camry has quit her job and isn't answering any of his emails.
After Luke meets Camry's parents they get a mysterious card only signed F, that tells them where Camry is. Luke is dispatched by Camry's parents to find her and bring her home in time for the Winter Solstice. But Luke knows that it's not going to be easy, because Luke is hiding his own secret from Camry.
This book was a decent read. Nothing super spectacular, but it was entertaining. Luke and Camry were nothing like I would imagine rocket scientists to be. They were both engaging and very active and each had their own presence. They both really popped off of the page and right into my living room. A Highlander Christmas was a decent read, and something I would happily recommend.
Camry is a top-rated rocket scientist who when pressured from a colleague, can't hang and runs for the hills. Really. She quits her job at NASA and hides out in Maine tending bar and dog sitting. So much for a strong female character. Ug. Luke Pascal Renoir (really) is also a rocket scientist and looking for remains of Camry's mother's smashed satellite, PODLY (also really). PODLY has the answers to the universe, but no one seems to be in a big hurry to save it. And there is magic. The characters are both terrible and unrealistic. Often my favorite part of romance books is the chase. The set up of the meeting, the barbed words, the lusty looks, and the back and forth that leads up to their mutual realization should be fun, interesting and the part of the book that really sets up their personalities. Unfortunately here, since magic is involved, their meeting and chase take about 2 pages and is completely uninspired and disappointing. There is no chemistry between the characters and their reactions to each other (not to mention the dialogue) is crazy unrealistic. Also, this is sort of Highlander lite, as there are only Highlanders in family and it is wintery but not really Christmasy. The dogs were cute though.
This is a light-hearted, feel-good, series, so it's appropriate that this final book culminates at Christmas-time. Well, actually it's centered around the winter solstice, with druidhs past and present working their magic. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that magic, which is why Camry is so conflicted, and why Luke thinks it's all hokum, since they both are physicists.
I'm a big believer in serendipity, so when Grace refers to magic as 'serendipitous coincidence', I'm on-board. And then Camry tells Luke 'my heart hurts when I think of a future that doesn't include you' - OK, there's that 'uncompromising, unpretentious, unconditional' love Luke learned from his young half-sister. Now if I could get my mind around a 5-month-old Fiona being a 15-year-old, I'd fit right in! But this series is for fun, so suspend disbelief and enjoy the MacKeage magic!
Pros: This book had nice bits of humor and the kind of charm holiday books are known for. I especially liked the dachshund, Tigger, so I loved that she was on the book cover.
Cons: I felt like this book either needed to be more humorous or more serious. It had a strange tone and feel to it that was sort of in between. I also could not relate with the main characters, though other readers may not have that problem. I can accept a certain amount of moodiness in a character, but Camry struck me as neurotic and annoying. Luke was so deceptive through most of the book that I did not find him attractive.
Overall, this novel was okay, but I've enjoyed other works by Janet Chapman much more.
Somehow I missed that this was part of a series, so I spent a lot of time confused. But it was still an interesting read and I'd like to go back to the beginning and read the rest of the series. Maybe then some of the pieces will make better sense.
I couldn't do it, couldn't finish this despite it featuring my favorite breed of dog on the cover. It's well written but the time travel story line doesn't work for me. Already back at the library, on to something else.
LOL this book has a lot going on. Two rocket scientist, One time traveling ancient Wizard, a fallen satellite, a blizzard, mix well and add magic!! I will be looking for more books by Janet Chapman.
This book was a huge disappointment. One of the reasons I picked it up was because the synopsis said the characters were NASA physicists so I thought there would be talk of space, science, equations, or at least numbers. There was zero talk about that.
The only reason we know the main characters, Camry and Luke, are rocket scientists is because Camry was apparently tracking a satellite and then it crashed. Oh, and Luke was also tracking the satellite. That’s it. I expected their jobs to play an important part in the story but you could have substituted any other job for theirs and it wouldn’t have changed the story a bit.
I haven’t read any other of the author’s books but I am guessing this book is part of a series that has something to do with highlander magic? I gather that magic is prevalent in all the books, which is fine - I like magic, but it felt like every problem Camry and Luke ran into was solved by magic or time travelers who had traveled back in time to make sure everything worked out. Camry and Luke basically didn’t have to do anything or solve any problems because the magic fixed everything.
Plus, Camry is dog sitting these 2 dogs whose owners are on vacation for the holidays when she decides to go with Luke to look for the satellite that crashed in the mountains. So, of course, she just takes the dogs with her. If I were a pet owner, I would be upset that the dog sitter took my dog on a trip to the snowy mountains where they almost died without telling me or asking permission.
I’m bummed I purchased this book – I should have checked it out from the library.
Well, as it turns out, this book was part of a series. Didn’t bother me though, and the storyline in itself was pretty straight-forward. By no means is this a literary masterpiece, in fact it is pretty bad to be honest. The storyline is all over the place, the plot is way too far fetched and the characters are simply, meh. They meet, fall in love and get married within two weeks. I’m guessing the magic thing grows on you if you have followed the characters since the beginning. This did not do it for me, it was exactly what I expected but nothing more.
This was cute and a lot more magical than I expected. I liked Luke and Camry was fine but the the dogs were the best part. Tigger and Max were just so fun! As this is the 7th book in this series I felt like I missed out on some things by not having read any of the prior books. But it wasn't anything so big that I felt like I couldn't understand this story. I don't know that I'll actively seek out more books in this series but if I came across them I'd give them a shot.
I highly recommend this fascinating book, and the intriguing series associated with it, to readers who love reading endearing fantasy. I have been rereading these series since they first were published, and they are as uplifting and excellent as the first time. Chapman truly illustrates the joy and heartache that come with close family ties, and they always end on a happily every after. Enjoy!
I just simply couldn’t get into the writing style within 40 pages (give or take), which was a chapter into the book. I promise that I did give it my best effort, but the writing style clearly wasn't a great fit on my end so I'm just simply DNFing the book for good and choose to donate to one of the various free little libraries thats in my hometown so somebody can actually enjoy the book more than I can. It's just a me thing, not the book thing.
This is part of a series about the MacKeage family who time traveled from Scotland and now run a big resort hotel of a ski mountain. This tale centers on a daughter, Camry, who is involved with ion propulsion for space travel. I have enjoyed the whole series with its expanding families and magic happenings. It was great for my taste.
I normally enjoy Janet chapmen books, but this one didn't do it for me. Not up to the standard of her other books. Too over the top on everything and rambled too much. I soon lost interest and sadly didn't finish the book.
This was a re-read; I had read it several times in paperback when originally released. I enjoy everything about this author. I love how Camry is carrying on the work Grace had started way back at the beginning of this series. Luke was a great match for Camry, and their journey was so sweet.
