The Introduction to this collection is a story within itself.
Cutting Bait - you never know the direction a story will go.
The Carpet Bagger - about a dog/lion hybrid.
Passing Through - a fantastic story about a mysterious, very large man.
Blood Brothers - a story about the horrors of war. This one gets better and better as it moves along.
The Replacement - if you are like me, this story will make you angry!
The Big Guy - a surprising mystery.
Bennington Triangle - about a mysterious beast.
The Karen - about a ghost hunter.
Secret Trees - about conspiracy theories.
Titty Twister - my favorite story in this anthology. It is so well written that you feel as if you are riding a roller coaster for the very first time.
Louisiana Jack - a vampire tale.
Shells - an amazing journey. (Also, make sure you read the introductions to these stories. This one is an emotional one, and it hints at a future Volume 3!)
I really liked the first one in this series and was surprised to see a third one come out recently. Because of that I read this first and was happily surprised. They did something cool with this one by adding drink recommendations for every story. The authors (an uncle and nephew combo) went to different coffeeshops and wrote horror stories based on what inspired them.
What I like about this is that the stories are so different from one another. It is not just a zombie anthology or vampire anthology (although this one had vampires and zombies.) There was not a clunker in the bunch but some stories definitely stood out.
The best one from Joseph Carro was called Blood Brothers. It was set in an early war in the US. At first it seemed like a pure historical retelling of a certain battle, but eventually the horror part entered. Except the horror was already there in seeing the war play out.
The best one from Paul Carro was the zombie one. In the story there is a state fair or amusment park run by people dressed as clowns. A couple of boy best friends have snuck into the park and a zombie outbreak happens while they are there. It is crazy, action packed, and sad, Everything good about zombies. I am looking forward to the third which I am about to read.
While I can’t say I found the majority of the stories particularly groundbreaking, I have to admire the creativity of both authors and the overall concept of this collection. The monsters made from people watching, the carefully tailored coffee suggestions that coincided with the vibe of each story; this was definitely one of the most unique collections I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.
In this awesome book written by two very talented authors, the reader is taken to coffee shops across the US, exposed to some excellent beverages and so death (if you like that kind of thing) Each story comes with its own explanation as well as a beverage recommendation from the authors based on each location. This book has everything, from Aliens to mysterious diseases and everything in between. I loved it!
