Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals.

Over 160 films have been made of his novels, more than any other author. In the 1920s, one of Wallace's publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him.

He is most famous today as the co-creator of "King Kong", writing the early screenplay and story for the movie, as well as a short story "King Kong" (1933) credited to him and Draycott Dell. He was known for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, The Four Just Men, the Ringer, and for creating the Green Archer character during his lifetime.

Epically absurd 1920s pulp. I'm writing 1920s pulp right now, and stand amazed at my own shamelessness in unlikely plot contrivances, and yet here's Wallace just chucking in a murderer who leaves severed heads around in boxes, a pet orangutan that abducts women, a whole load of comedy dialogue about the goings on in a film company, a political MI5 type who randomly pitches up to investigate for reasons that are immediately forgotten and the politics bit never comes into it either, an absolutely bananas plot twist re an 18th century French executioner, and a lost cave full of a vanished regiment from the Anarchy period of the 12th century. I mean. Edgar.

Obviously it's utter trash, rendered a lot less entertaining than it could have been by implicit and overt racism. Shame because there is also an impressively well done toxic-masculine villain--racist, misogynist, and shown to be a blustering coward--and a surprising bit of highly satisfying female solidarity.

Pozitivno - mali broj strana.
Negativno - sve ostalo.

Purta o vie simpatie acestui subaltern integru.

A good classic Edgar Wallace mystery, but instead of the usual villains in weird costumes (the frog, the green archer, etc.) we have an actual pet orangutan with human-like intelligence and a bunch of other crazy characters ().
In general I liked it a lot, however I thought the villain was rather easy to guess compared to his other works and some elements stretched the suspense of disbelief to its breaking point
().
If you haven't read any Wallace story yet I'd recommend his better works first (The Gaunt Stranger/The Ringer, The Dead Eyes of London, The Crimson Circle, ...).

Wow, this one got perilous! Almost to a Gothic-level sort, with old manors, secret passages, trap doors, lost caves, and ladies held in a tower. There are several obvious and convincing suspects: so who might the murderer be? Baronet, orangutan, playwright? Or someone else entirely?

Plenty of twists and turns…

Dear me, what can have possessed him to write this nonsense? he didn't seem able to decide if the characters were good or bad, the plot jumps haphazardly about (as usual with Wallace) and several episodes seem to be added as padding - was he working to a word count?

It always amazes me to think how quickly Edgar Wallace wrote his books and although some, of course, aren't up to standard a remarkably high percentage are highly entertaining yarns. This one is great fun, the story is set around the British film industry in the silent era, the heads of corpses are turning up and an orang-utan is on the loose (perhaps shades of King Kong.)
