My biggest hurdle for this book was the first few chapters - the writing style and sentence structure seemed a bit odd - but it improved quickly and soon was no issue at all. Once the book was in the swing of things I got quite invested. It's filled with lots of actions and never a dull moment as event after event happens. Poor Callum can't seem to get a break.
While most characters only appear for a few scenes, with maybe a mention or two or quick appearance later on, you are still endeared to them (at least those who aren't evil).
I am looking forward to seeing what Callum Walker gets up to in the next book.

First of all, M.J. I have to say it was such a pleasure to meet you in person for your book signing! I was also so happy to see your books for sale at our local chapters, it made me smile when I saw them! I know you asked for my honest feedback and review, so I thought I'd post it here for you.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story as you've mentioned it definitely has some similarities to Harry Potter in its own unique way. I enjoyed meeting all the characters and different classes throughout the book, and especially learning about the magical realm and how different forms of magic work.
I can agree with other reviewers on this book that it was a bit of a challenge to get into. I found the first half of the book to be a bit of a struggle to get into, however the second half of the book has really got my attention. Upon reflection, I think the reason why it was a challenge for myself to read was due to the number of times I needed to refer to a dictionary to look up words I didn't know. I'm used to looking up a few words per book, but I was finding myself looking up at least 30 words by the time I reached the halfway point of the book. At this point I gave up, and proceeded to read it without full understanding as it was really slowing down my pace. I would have really appreciated a brief glossary per page with definitions on the bottom of the page to help with understanding the text. Either that or a more simplified vocabulary. With that being said, the words I did look up described the scenes in the book perfectly, but only after I understood what they meant!
The other thing I've realized is my application for books written in first perspective for the main character. I had a really hard time relating to Callum with all the characters in this book written in a third person perspective. I think that may just be my preference, but it made it a little more challenging for me to read. I would have really enjoyed hearing from his thoughts how he's feeling, seeing and experiencing the world around him.
I feel like this book contained a lot of great wisdom, and wanted to share a few of my favorite quotes from the book below:

It took a bit to get into this. The writing style seemed odd, but either I got used to it, or it improved as the book continued.
There was never a dull moment in the book. While some of the info dumps where a rushed, the story itself is solid. Callum Walker is relatable and this side characters, while only appear for a short while made you root for them.
I look forward to seeing what the next book brings.

I liked it. I liked it a lot. I fully intend to like it even more as I finish reading the entire series. Originally I was only going to read the first book, but the main character grows on you. He hasn’t been having the greatest time, and I have to see that he makes out alright.
Disclosure, I know the author personally. She has even met two of my children and I take notes on the things that the author tells me. So I concede some personal bias is inevitable. To fully understand what I mean, you should attend one of the author’s book signings. If travelling isn’t feasible, then just buy all the books, read them, then buy the books for your friends so that you can discuss the books with those same friends.
This is the first book of a series, and as such there is a lot of ground to cover in world building and in introducing characters. This is necessary, unavoidable, and takes up a lot of pages! There are many instances where I wished that situations had been delved into more, that there was more foreshadowing, and also more character development. However, this actually ties us to the main character more, as he, with us, is also discovering a world’s worth of new knowledge at a breakneck pace.
This is a fun book to read. Something is always happening and the author is good at immersing you into the setting. Many of the places described felt so familiar that it’s as if I was remembering them.
There are some neat plot twists as to who some of the characters in the story really are. The book needed more of this. People don’t get to do enough. They don’t interact with each other enough.
There is not enough exposition on the the two main antagonists, or the main character’s origins. I personally believe that delving more into the main character’s origins could be a book unto itself. His origins were touched upon yes, but it felt like there was more going on that people in the story realized.
Worse, the author and I profoundly disagree as to who needs to be killed, or otherwise written out of a story. Some of my favourite characters got forcibly removed from the narrative, but I wanted to see their plot lines continue and expand. Really, it broke my heart.
So I do plan on reading the rest of the series. It can only get crazier and I want to see that. I feel that the true nature of the main character’s eponymous ascension wasn’t about magical power, or personal importance or notoriety, but that at book’s end he was no longer alone.
At the beginning of the book Calum Walker has no friends. At the end of the book he has retained most of those. As a net sum, he seems to have gained allies and groupies more than friends. I believe that is the lesson here, secret friends are almost as bad as secret enemies. I’m looking forward to Calum gaining -and keeping- true friends almost as much he is. So with some trepidation, I will be reading the next book to see if this becomes true.

A solid 3.5 stars. Like Callum, I was incredibly frustrated with the back and forth of his persistent capture, torture and escape. After losing Frey, I thought Callum finally found a permanent companion in Liam. However his unexpected death proved otherwise and I was devasted for the warlock. However after reaching Havishire, I finally felt relief. Finally some allies! To be let down again was extremely disappointing. Although Callum did find a true ally among the Druids and was eventually reunited with Frey, I struggled with his loneliness. I long for him to have a constant companion in his journey. The battle with the magical vs metaphysical dynamic was very interesting and I was happy with the ending. I have more questions and theories as to who Callum is and who he will become. Does his future have something to do with who his parents were? I'm interested to see where Callum's next adventure leads in the second book.

The Ascension by J.M. Shaw is the first book in the Callum Walker series. Looking for your next fantasy series? Then this book is one worth checking out. Two evil brothers in a quest for more power, a young man who could be their undoing, and a plethora of magical creatures...yeah, this book is a fantasy adventure waiting for you.
The Ascension has a cover depicting a tunnel swirling with mist. Standing in this dark tunnel is a shadowy figure. The question arises – “Who is this figure?” Readers have to wonder – is it Callum? Or is it someone else from the story waiting for him? At the end of the tunnel is daylight and trees, which give the tunnel light. Where does this tunnel lead? It’s a question that can only be answered by reading the story.
The Ascension by J.M. Shaw is the beginning of Callum’s story. Callum is a human magic wielder living on Earth. He is an introverted individual who prefers to keep to himself. His past has jaded him towards relationships with others. Working a low-paying job, Callum lives in abject poverty. Despite his struggles, he doesn’t complain. He’s aware of the dangers that stalk the streets at night. In fact, he makes it his mission to get out there and hunt them dangers down.
It really begs the question of “why?” doesn’t it? Especially when you witness a young woman trying to strike up a conversation with him at a local coffee shop that he tends to haunt. His brusque response to her flirtation manners will have even you rearing back in surprise. You’ll be thinking – “Well, no wonder you’re alone with behavior like that!” Of course, we won’t learn about what he’s been through until later in the story.
As The Ascension progresses the story unfolds in the third person perspective. Readers follow Callum as he goes through his days. Callum demonstrates that he has unique abilities one of which includes discernment. Callum can sense magical energies, but it goes beyond that. He can discern certain things as well, and that tends to help him out in particular situations. Now, that’s not to say that he is infallible, because he’s not, but this unique skill adds an interesting “spice” to the story.
The Ascension alternates between a series of characters throughout. Callum is the main character of this story as he is the one spoken of in a prophecy. Has he heard of said prophecy? Of course not! You just gotta love this story with the “hidden prophecy” that names someone as the “savior of the world”! Well, that’s exactly what author Shaw has created here with The Ascension.
In this novel, readers are getting a secret fantasy realm that few humans know about. Two evil brothers, who while both are evil, are exact opposites. How is that you ask? Well, one has magic naturally, while the other? Yep, you guessed it…has none. So, how are they fighting over who will “rule and control” these worlds? As we all know, and as author Shaw gives us – evil always finds a way. Though, this feud goes deeper than one having and the other not.
Callum is going to have quite the journey as The Ascension unfolds. He goes from being a relative “nobody” to someone who is heaped upon with expectations. Now, people (primarily from the fantasy realm) will be looking to him to help them and save them from the war that is coming. Author Shaw will literally have him going from one bad situation to another. While Callum is going to be having a rough go of it, he shows his strength and fortitude throughout it all.
One particular element of The Ascension that readers are going to appreciate is how Callum goes from being literally friendless to developing some unexpected friendships along the way. The first will be through an act of kindness to a frightened sprite, and another similar such act to one who started out as his enemy.
While Callum is dealing with whatever dire situation he finds himself in he also strengthens his arcane abilities. At the beginning of the book, he knows very little about them. Honestly, as the story progresses he still doesn’t know much about them, but he begins to practice more and discover more in the process. It’s interesting how often he surprises those who would wish to harm him.
What’s really nice about The Ascension is that very few things go Callum’s way. He’s made to go through and endure so much hardship. If Callum could speak to us readers we’re pretty sure he’d say that he just had “bad luck.”
When it comes to the pacing of The Ascension author Shaw has the storyline moving at a slow to moderate pace. The story does become engaging in certain situations and moments that will encourage the reader to lean forward into the storyline. Then things will slow down as author Shaw draws out certain situations and reinforces the gravity of it.
As The Ascension draws to a close, this story reads like it could be read as a standalone novel. However, if readers wanted to continue on with Callum’s story then they are fully capable of doing that as well. As The Ascension comes to an end, Callum learns a few things about himself and his family.
Readers looking for a clean fantasy novel The Ascension will absolutely fit the bill. This novel focuses on Callum and his story of trying to stay out of the grasp of two brothers and their quest for power. This fantasy novel has some mild romance, tons of fantasy, and limited profanity. So, if that sounds like your kind of book, then grab The Ascension.

4.5⭐️! Would definitely recommend this beautifully written book. In the beginning I didn’t know where the story was heading and was afraid it was going to hit a dead-end. But as soon as it immersed into the magical realm and let us understand more about Callum’s interesting character, the story became instantly gripping! I loved how the dots were connected and the way the plot built-up. Can’t wait to know what the next adventure is!

The pacing is fast-paced, drawing the reader in early on and laying out the wealth of mythos the author cultivated for this series.
The heart of the narrative resides in the character developments that bring this story to life. Not only did I immediately resonate with Callum’s story and personal struggles, especially as an introvert with social anxiety myself, but the wide cast of characters gave readers multiple perspectives that captured the chaos of the war between the two evil brothers and the skewed perspectives their allies have of one another, adding to Callums growing problems throughout the narrative.

Firstly, I absolutely fell in love with the third person perspective in 'The Ascension'!! So many fantasy books are written in first person povs these days, it was refreshing to find one that isn't! As such i was able to fully immerse myself within the fast paced, near non stop action packed adventure of the story. I really felt for Callum, his relentless challenges were richly compelling and had me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next to poor Callum!?
I also want to add because I'm a big fan of third person pov. The side characters, although some only making brief appearances, i believe with this perspective they were better developed than first person pov novels and actually left a lasting impression because the story didn't focus solely on Callum's perspective. Each one added so much depth to Callum's journey and survival - whether they were friends or foe.
Unlike others, I didn't have an issue with the first couple of chapters, i think the book quickly hits its stride and sucks you in. The blend on earthly and magical realm world-building the author created is ☆☆☆☆

I didn't enjoy the language style as it felt too formal, as if written with a thesaurus to prevent repetitive language. The author mentioned their struggle with ADHD / Autism and some of the language choices may come from that. My son also has both and his speaking style actually sounded very similar to the way this book was written.
The storyline was kind of interesting, but very repetitive and jumped around too much for my taste. The main character even referred to the repetitiveness of some of the themes of his struggles so the author was definitely aware of this. I wish there were more characters that were persistent through the entire book instead of jumping from group to group.
I did feel that the book improved as it went along though and this may just be a struggle for a first time author. The concept was interesting but the main character was not very likeable, which contributed to my struggle. I almost put the book down after the 2nd chapter but pushed through and eventually got used to the style and noted improvements.
A physical copy of the book was given to me as a Father's Day gift, purchased in Chapters in the Local Author's Section. I saw comments that the author may have made edits to the digital version to improve the beginning? Not sure if I will try the next books in the series.

The Ascension by J.M. Shaw is an exciting new fantasy. Magic, wars between two fractions, and a third party aka the lead character to shake things up. I love how it has the same magical action-packed suspense vibe that the Harry Potter and The Empyrean series hold dear. This read is an epic adventure for all fans. I also loved how the main character can stir up trouble for the chaotic magical world that also binds his world. He alone can maybe prevent all the wicked chaos. Callum Walker is not only like Harry Potter but also like Buffy the Vampire Slayer because he holds so much power and strength that everyone wants. Only he can save the world from evil. J.M. Shaw writes in a way that deeply intrigues the reader and sends them farther into her fictional masterpiece. Mysterious, engaging, and fun - this is definitely one fantasy thriller that is a keeper. I will be looking forward to reading more by this talented writer.

This book is the first step in what I am sure will be a great series. The story is interesting and captivating. I read until my eyes were so heavy I couldn’t keep them open, but I wanted to keep reading. The main character, Callum Walker, is likeable and down to Earth. Even though he is touted as the one to end the war, he is still clumsy and unsure, but willing to stand up for what is right. Throughout the book, he showed remarkable character growth, which I hope to see continue in the following books.
Knowing that this is not the end of the Callum Walker series could make a reader unsure to start it, as I often like the whole series out, so I am not left on edge. However, this part of his journey has a finish while still setting up the next one without leaving the reader completely on edge. I appreciated that I was given a satisfactory conclusion and look forward to what else will happen.
The rest of the characters, both human and magical, were diverse and had quirks, making them likeable (even bad-guy likeable for a book).
If you enjoy fantasy, this is a great read!

The slower pace that does take some getting used to but, the plot really picks up and turns into a bit of a rollercoaster once we are a few chapters in.
Callum is an authentic and layered character, though at times it feels like there are still walls up that keep you at a slight distance from him. I would love to see even more character development as the series progresses, especially given the potential already there. The characters overall are dynamic and each bring something different to the story, which helps keep the narrative interesting.
Overall, I am definitely curious to see where the series goes next and will be picking up the next book.

The reactions of a stubborn, introverted, loner thrust into situations beyond his skill set are described in a consistent fashion. This reader looks forward to reading the second book of the series and discovering more of both worlds. Highly recommended for both adult and young adult audiences.

The book was well-paced and has a certain rhythm to the story lines. Skillful writing, realistic as well as unique characters (especially the main character), and a plot full of twists and turns. There were a few grammatical errors, but the descriptive vocabulary painted a vivid picture as I was reading the story. I really enjoyed reading about Callum and all the magical creatures he faced in the book. I loved seeing him face his fears and develop his abilities as the story progressed. I also loved Frey, and thought the author portrayed her as a helping character wonderfully. If you enjoy fantasy with mystical creatures and magic, this is the book for you!

A genre I don't know yet bought because the author was signing her books. It stood on my shelf for 18 months before i felt the book telling me it's time.
So glad I read this book. Callum Walker is a human and the right person to hold such magical powers. His journey to understand and learn his mission is well written. Included in his journey are fairies, elvons, unicorns and many more mythical creatures. I could not put the book down and came to love these creatures and Callums growth.

This book was amazing, I can’t wait to read the whole series. The way Shaw brings the characters to life in my mind, I really appreciated that they weren’t just generic characters. I can’t wait to dive into the second book.

I enjoyed this but feel like I would have connected to the MC better if it was written in first person POV instead of third person. There also wasn’t a major cliffhanger at the end and the story felt pretty resolved to me which doesn’t make me feel super invested in finishing the series/:

Good start to the story but to many fantasy realms introduced in a short period of time. Nevertheless, the story has my interest for now and enough to keep reading this 3 book series.
