Suddenly, something other than the moon lit them. The surrounding water looked like the ocean at sunrise, but they hadn’t been out here that long. Had they? Kelly’s eyes met his in confusion, and they turned toward the sky for answers. The starry darkness had been ripped wide to reveal a fireball hurtling through the night’s curtain.

The meteor had gone under too, and Kurt’s consciousness was eager to follow. Kelly sprung back up over rocking waves and reached for him. She tried to cry out, but her throat had already burst open. Blood poured down her blackened cheeks like an explosion of red tears. Then she slipped forever beneath the dark water and was gone. It was the last thing Kurt saw before his mind caught up to his damaged body.

He looked at Garcia and, through the haze of smoke that languished between them, gave a confident nod that showed he was ready to become El Rastreador again. “You’re going to find someone for me,” Garcia told him. “Let’s get you cleaned up and I’ll tell you all about it.”

At twenty feet away, rows of teeth glinted like brand new steak knives. Her body went cold in pre-shock, the ocean breeze suddenly freezing as the terrible head bladed forward with eyes that seemed locked onto her in anticipation.

The sight of it alarmed him. “This isn’t good,” Luther told them, watching the ship crawl across the horizon, all the pieces of this puzzle clicking into place at last. “What do they want?” Rand asked. “It’s a one ship blockade,” Luther said. Just before the lights went out.
A heartfelt homage to classic Italian horror b-movies.
The frilled shark slithered through the darkness at two hundred fathoms. He felt the passenger wiggle from somewhere inside his body, taking away another piece of his limited consciousness. The evening’s kill was fresh in his stomach, but the need to eat again had returned at his passenger’s demand. The lure came, not from the island, but from the sea.
A funny summer read on paper, if you are in the mood for an action-packed gore-soaked deep sea thriller/aquatic horror book, something like a Peter Benchley creature-feature meets James Gunn’s Slither (2006), Night of the Creeps (1986) and Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2 (1979) screenplay with atmospheric John Carpenter’s soundtrack and vibes.
Manuel’s finger rubbed the trigger, paralyzed in this moment, his free hand instinctively performing the sign of the cross. The charred body touched down and began to shamble forward. Its distended jaw hung lower than a mouth could naturally open, and for a second, Manuel thought this poor bastard was still somehow alive and trying to communicate. That would’ve been preferable.
Not bad at all, such a shame that the storyline with its gross sex & gore over the top scenes kept me far more interested than the characters involved, and sometimes pacing and the sheer number of threats involved made things a little much chaotic too, but probably I was just not in the right mood while reading it, sweating and working in the hot big city instead of spending a vacation relaxed on a seaside shore.
The passenger filled its host with impatient rage. Its pincers reaching further into the shark’s basilhyal cartilage, causing him to twist in pain while new urges filtered through his thoughts, telling him to attack the vessel above. Over his thirty-year lifespan, the shark had never felt so helpless. This betrayal of long-honed survival instincts made his anger pulse.

The platform that held it in place slipped toward the ocean on groaning hinges. The fish looked from person-to-person, the bodies scrambling across the mission bay floor, assessing who was to be eaten first, its monstrous mouth becoming a yawning cavern. The pink tongue visible behind the rows of its forked teeth made Reggie’s eyes pop. It wasn’t a tongue.
3 stars/3 ½ stars if you include the nice short Bonus Story A soul to cling to and that wonderfully creepy cover art that made me instant-buy this ebook for my kindle as soon as I saw it.

Review of ISLAND RED by Matt Serafini
ISLAND RED is at once sci fi, adventure thriller, horror, and emotionally involving. Commencing explosively as a courting couple enjoying a nighttime swim witnesses, to their eternal regret, a fireball plummeting from the sky into the ocean. From that point, the horror and adventure are nonstop, as the inhabitants and visitors of a tiny island called Crystal Key, 20 miles from the Florida Keys, come under attack by quadruple, somewhat unrelated threats, every one promising fatal consequences.
This is not one of those adventure thrillers in which a happy hero rides to the rescue, saving the damsel and many bystanders. This is far more nihilistic, and believe me, some of the humans are more monstrous than the marine threat or the newly-arrived (via fireball/meteor) threat. Wildlife, after all, acts on instinct, following the evolutionary imperatives. Humans, however, choose to act, so I think the greater onus is on the human monsters in this story.

It's a species that has been around for 80 million years. It has over 300 teeth in 25 rows to trap its prey. It has very rarely been found in depths above 160 feet, meaning the frilled shark has never posed a threat to humans. Until now. The residents of Crystal Key, Florida didn’t think there was anything to worry about. A missing girl with a troubled past was easy to dismiss, but that was only the beginning. When fishermen disappear and two girls are attacked on open water, everyone assumes the culprit is a predator stalking their piece of the Atlantic. But as an offseason hurricane descends, and communications with the mainland are severed, Crystal Key is about to discover that terror doesn’t only come from below
What did I think of it:

First off I want to say that this was actual a cover but , and secondly that This is the strangest and bizarrest book I've read this year, and that's saying something, it actual surprised me with how much I actual ended up liking it, can't give to much away because I want you to go pick it up for your self and see what I mean but its a kind of book you don't want to miss, it has every thing in it that I look in a book, from a shark , to people disappearing, to a offseason storm that's coming , and to communications with the mainland severed to the bizarre happings that come to pass , no was no way that I could stop reading it once I started , it just pulled me in and bam I was hooked, its a sci fi, thriller, and horror rolled in to one book .

"Matt Serafini has put together a story that blends so many genres into one. The thing that stood out for me was the fact that it all blended together so well. There are like five different side stories all going on at the same time and when they all come together, it is just amazing."

Great read! Everything you want from a deep sea thriller/horror/ sci-fi/crime novel. Island Red is Peter Benchley on acid.

ISLAND RED gave me everything I was hoping for based on the synopsis and a whole lot more! At the surface we have a super hungry giant shark and an alien parasitic invasion from a fallen meteor while a hurricane is underway. Like... what the hell? Remind me to contact my travel agent and ensure I never get dooped on a vacation package like this. This might actually be the single worst trip to take to an island surpassing the fake radio contest in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
In addition to this outrageously riveting plot we've got all kinds of other elements and stories at play:
-a teen reconnecting with his previously-absent dad while trying to remain sane missing his crush and all technology left on the mainland
-island mafia/gangsters
-a missing young woman with a troubled past, full of intriguing discoveries
-covert operatives and military-esque shenanigans
And we've got exploding worms, gnarly deaths, bloody water, girls in bikinis, life lessons learned, sacrifice, and I can just go on and on and on!
And without giving anything major away I want to say there are scenes from the POV of the shark. And I loved it every single time we got one because it was just one more lens in which to view and experience this entire story. And the way the shark is written gave me MASSIVE vibes of how Cujo the dog was written by Stephen King. I personally developed a layer of empathy at times for our shark and remain just totally impressed with how connected I got to it.
The human characters are also fleshed out SO well (just ask the shark.... wink wink). We get their strengths and flaws alongside their hopes and regrets. They are all so deeply human and infallible at times in such a variety of ways. There is so much built around each of our main characters, and some side characters (although there are some "side" characters that are just fodder... and that works for me!!), that I just got so invested in every single storyline and each POV.
The edition I read from 2022 is a "re-release" of the original from 2016 but it has been updated and enhanced in terms of technology used/discussed, more well-rounded characterizations, and more. It has additional scenes as well as beefed up situations that help connect the story more, resolve potential plot holes, and allow our characters to reach full potential and realization. And it totally works! I think the idea to release this "Author's Preferred Edition" with updates is a stroke of genius and it's a way to keep connecting with readers.
And the cover from Justin Coons is absolute FIRE! The colors, the shark, the island itself, the two people with alien parasitic worms bursting through them... it is hands down one of my favorite covers ever. Justin Coons produces amazing art and has numerous book covers out there (as well as some blu-ray covers!) but this one just takes the cake!
SUMMER IS HERE! Island Red should be on your radar, in your lap, by your side at the beach/pool, etc. You don't want to miss out on this and all the amazing horror at your fingertips!

You know you’re going to get something of an eighties vibe when the story begins with a comet crashing to earth. And, you know you’re getting a horror book when said comet burns two swimmers to a crisp. This particular comet contains a parasite that finds its way into a 20 foot, 2500 pound shark. Crystal Key, a peaceful island off the coast of Florida, will never be the same.
Reggie is sent to Crystal Key to stay with his dad, Luther, while his mum vacations in Europe. This remote tourist island with crappy WiFi does not sound like fun. As he ferries from the mainland he meets Manuel, a gangster eager to get out of the business, who’s agreed to do one last job on the island. The author introduces us to a number of the island residents creating an interesting cast of characters. The island is a mix of locals and tourists staying at the Shifting Tides resort. Rand Hamilton is the resort owner who only cares about the bottom line and not upsetting the guests. His deplorable attention to profit is almost to be admired.
What was an island paradise becomes besieged. Communications are all down. A hurricane is baring down and the island is being blockaded by a mysterious private military ship and terrorized by the bloodthirsty shark. Things get even worse when the parasite spreads from the shark to its victims and then into the island’s general population. Along with all this, we also have a hunt for a missing girl who disappeared even before all the craziness began.
For the first half of the book, the author plays on our primal fear of the sea, being out of our element, and creates lots of tension and mystery. The second half has a great Night of the Creeps or Slither feel, and the action ramps up as the the private militia becomes more involved. There is plenty of fun gore and grossness. My favorite kill was potentially a nod to Fulci, and I’ll leave it at that. We get some of the story from the shark’s point of view, which is pretty cool. I even had some empathy for him.
So as you can tell, there is a lot going on in this story – possibly a bit too much if I’m honest. The sheer number of threats make things a bit chaotic. The individual ideas are really strong but the sum of them all together makes them a bit weaker. I really liked the militia when they weren’t so involved – mysterious and in the distance. The book is a blast though and I did enjoy it. I’d really like to see more stories based around the parasites. I see the potential for some great follow up. Take a trip to a tropical island from which most will never leave.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. With an original twist on the Jaws story, Serafini takes it to places Benchley would never have dreamed of.
What do you get when you combine a rogue shark, aliens, and a secret government agency? Island Red, a fantastic thrill-ride of a book.
I look forward to reading more by Serafini.

Not just another Jaws novel as I at first feared it would be. It's a well written fast paced monster shark horror/space slug shrieking zombie Sci-Fi/suspense novel that is difficult to put down. I loved every page. Highly recommended.

I love deep sea thrillers. And this one fits the bill. It wasn't what I expected but am very glad I read it. It was awesome. A little of everything and a wild, wild ride. Just when I thought I had something figured out, wham. I was wrong and a different twist. This is going on my read all by this author list. Do yourself a favor and read it. you won't regret it.

This is not a killer shark book. If you want aliens, weird sexual stories, drug cartels, a fucked up "redemption" story, and sometimes a shark when it's plot convenient, then read this book. Oh there's also an elite special ops team appearance. You know what, skip this, go watch shark week or something instead.

I was given this for free to read and review. This book got my attention from the very start and I couldn't wait to finish it. Now I know you are thinking he got it for free so the review is going to just gush with praise. Well here is the bad part first there were a couple of places that needed to be tightened up in the plot, but these were just my thoughts on it. There were a spot or two that spell check looked to have reared its ugly little head. I don't want to get too much detail away. I will say there is one heck of bad shark in the story and it isn't a Great White. Mr. Serafina also throws in a hurricane to make rescue a problem. Then there are the Alien creatures from outer space that are parasites to just about anything. Oh I forgot that the parasites turn humans into zombies that want to add numbers to their ranks instead of eating brains like good zombies are supposed to do. There is a guy named Manuel, who is on the island looking for the daughter of a friend and that doesn't go well for him. There are several minor characters that play a part in the whole story. Some you will like and some you won't. So let us sum up: good guys check, bad guys check, dangerous ocean predator check, huge storm check, and creepy alien creatures from space check. Oh, I forgot the nefarious government agency trying to capture the Aliens. So there is a lot going for this story to be a hit for readers of science fiction.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it on Kindle and read it quickly. Does it really deserve 4 stars? No, but it deserves no less than 3.5.

The alien parasite dwelling in a shark is scary to me. Pesky parasites are freaking everywhere, and honestly, I would have thought salt water was safe. I thought parasites would shrivel up like slugs in salt.
How am I supposed to know, for sure, that we don't have alien parasites bombarding our planet and indiscriminately burrowing into brains all over the place? I can't ever know for sure, so yea, that sucks.
I enjoyed the different povs, and it added to my overall reading experience. I have never had the point of view of a shark before. Much less a shark, with an alien parasite, that he is aware of, eating his brain. Or, the point of view of an alien parasite on a mission to take over the earth. I got both in this great book.
I recommend reading during the summer, at the beach.

Much less a shark, with an alien parasite, that he is aware of, eating his brain. Or, the point of view of an alien parasite on a mission to take over the earth. I got both in this great book.
I recommend reading during the summer, at the beach.

I actually found this novel to have an issue with too much going on in it! Rare, I know!
We have rare sharks, we have aliens, we have mobsters, we have missing people, oh and there’s a hurricane on the way?!
Plus a number of family dynamics, and we now have all the pieces for seven different plots. Unfortunately they are all shoved into one book.
It was hard to distinguish what was actually important in the story and what wasn’t; there was so much going on it really felt like there wasn’t enough room for some of the actual characters. Speaking of characters, we get introduced to so many, it’s a whirlwind! There’s hardly enough time for any of them dialogue or development.
A story just focusing on one event or “baddie” would’ve been much more intriguing to me.
I will say, the 2022 edition’s cover art is really cool!

Der Beschreibungstext und das Cover führen den Käufer gezielt in die Irre. Man hat hier keinen Hai Thriller vor sich, sondern einen Möchtegern Horror Roman über außerirdische Parasiten. Keine Ahnung, was man damit bezweckt, die Leser absichtlich zu täuschen.
Leider ist aber auch die Story um die außeriridischen Parasiten furchtbar schlecht. Langweilige Charaktere, die kein Klischee auslassen und dazu die üblichen Versatzstücke und Schauorte: die Insel, der Hurrikan, die geheime Militärorganisation. Hat man alles schon einmal gelesen und zwar um Welten besser.
Hinzu kommt, dass das Buch furchtbar schlecht lektoriert ist und man ständig über Rechtschreibfehler stolpert.

A good summer read. Night of the Creeps meets Deep Blue Sea. A fun quick read, very enjoyable!

Wow ! Totally unexpected twists and turns. A little slow in the beginning but worth pushing through to get to the good stuff.
