He wants my blood. He wants my magic. He wants my soul…

Zara has spent years plotting revenge against the Lord of Night for killing her sister. A spy and a shadow-bender in the City of Night, where wild magic runs rampant and warring factions fight for power over it, the Lord of Night is the feared and reviled leader of the city. She’s grown up hearing tales of the part-demon, part-vampire lord and she’s seen firsthand his devastating use of wild magic.

But when Zara infiltrates his palace to enact her plot for vengeance, she comes to learn that everything she thought she knew about her enemy is a lie. Soon she’s wrapped up in a lethal game of power and deception. The most treacherous of all, however, is the connection she shares with the Lord of Night, a bond she can’t deny no matter how hard she fights it. What they share threatens to unveil the secret she’s kept her whole life.

And her secret is the most dangerous of them all, a dark and deadly fate that could save Night…or annihilate it.

CITY OF NIGHT is an enemies-to-lovers slow burn fantasy romance. It’s the first in a series, ending on a cliffhanger.

A beautiful, magical, and emotional adventure wrapped in shadows, secrets, and longing. I absolutely loved this book. 🌙💖✨

📖 Book: City of Night
🖋️ Author: Aurora Grey
🌟 Rating: 5 ✧
🌙 Genre: adult romantasy
📚 Series: City of Night
🖤 Summary: Set in a supernatural city ruled by powerful factions, City of Night follows Zara, a heroine fueled by vengeance against the city’s ruthless ruler. But as dark secrets surface and truths begin to unravel, her thirst for revenge twists into something far more dangerous — and far more important. With the city’s survival at stake and an unexpected ally by her side, Zara is pulled into a fate far greater than the one she originally set out to claim 🗡️🌌

♡ What I loved most:
The world-building: dark, mysterious, and threaded with an unexpected kind of beauty — like a night sky glittering with secrets. I was completely absorbed 🌌
The enemies-to-lovers dynamic: slow burn perfection. Sharp banter, constant tension, and so much delicious denial — it had me hooked 😮‍💨
The supernatural factions: I adored the whole “society classes” concept. It gave me major Divergent nostalgia in the best possible way 🏙️
The magic system: it was unique, powerful, and genuinely intriguing 🔮
The plot: fast-paced, twisty, and layered with surprises and magical locations. Every chapter pulled me deeper into the story 🗡️

───♡─────────────

୨ৎ Overall:
A beautiful, magical, and emotional adventure wrapped in shadows, secrets, and longing. I absolutely loved this book. My boyfriend picked up this duology for me after reading the Amazon reviews, and honestly? He nailed it. This story swept me off my feet from the very first page and never loosened its grip.
I need more. Immediately. Thank the stars he bought both books — because that cliffhanger? I didn’t even hesitate before diving straight into book two 🌙🖤✨

xoxo, until the next book 💋📚🌌

Mild spoilers included below :)

This book was a really fun, short, romantasy read that I finished in less than 24 hours. The world is a bit like Divergent, but there's magic, and each of the 4 factions is a different supernatural race (demons, angels, sirens/mermaids, and shifters) all fighting for power in a never-ending war. I thought the world-building was really well done, and I especially liked Asher and his POV chapters. This was a solid love triangle between 2 rival brothers, although I wish there was a little more time built out with Kieran & his possessive dragon at the beginning of the book (and more Kieran POV chapters) so it was less obvious who Zara would choose in the middle/towards the end.

I will definitely be reading the second book/final book in this duet (I really can't wait!). The cliffhanger at the end is TOUGH, so I'm sad I have to wait several months to hear what happens next. The one thing I'd really like to see developed more in the next book is Zara herself. She is a spy with super cool powers, but I found her emotions to be really volatile, which led her to often make rash decisions and behave a little childish. However, I think her emotions made sense for this book because she has a lot to learn about the world now that she's done with spy training and is discovering truths, but I'm looking forward to seeing her get a little smarter.

Overall, this was a 5-star romantasy with some of my favorite tropes and some solid spice! It's a short read and has a unique world that I truly couldn't put down. I would definitely recommend and will be continuing the duet.

Thank you to Aurora Grey for the ARC. I loved it!

Mild spoilers ahead …

This was a 4.5 … easily rounded to 5 … UNTIL. UNTIL … the meatloaf ending.

Otherwise, this was excellent. Creative world building, interesting magic, Zara was multidimensional and her ambiguous alliances made sense. The dark king was deliciously dark and I didn’t know how the author was going to justify some of his backstory but she pulled it off with a combination of letting him be unapologetically dark and also reformed but powerless in his own ways. Well played. The twists weren’t the most surprising but they worked out well and made sense … except for one …

Now the meatloaf ending …

MMC through the entire book: “Oh I want you, I need you! Nothing can damage this bond!”

MMC at the end of the book “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that! Nooooooo, I won’t do that.”

Come on. COME THE EFF ON. This turnabout just didn’t make sense - it needed more build up to justify that lightening speed 180.

I’ll be reading the next book, that’s for sure, but I will be indignant and self-righteous for at least the first page, dammit!

Go read this. It’s glorious.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I think this book would be great for fans of City of Thorns and Savage Lands. The world building is very unique and I loved Zara as a main character. I did find the magic system to be a bit confusing at first and some parts felt a bit rushed, but overall the story kept me very entertained. I’m definitely interested to see what happens in book 2 since this one ends on a total cliff hanger, and there was a lot of action right at the end.

Ummm nope sorry.
DNF.

I tried, I REALLY tried.
But it didn't work for me.
The writing style was nice and their was a good plot.
But it was just too damn FAST.
Like, I was literally rereading a few lines back just to check if I missed something.
Chapters and characters would come out of nowhere and I was honestly so confused.
If the story had taken more time to explain the charcters and the story then I would have liked this book.

Sorry guys, it just wasn't for me.

This is Book 1 "City of Night" in a 2 book series. I literally Could Not Put This Book Down! I was so Enthralled in this World I had to know what happened next. The World Building and Characters are Phenomenal.. I felt their happiness and Pain. This is a Love Triangle between two Rival Brother's. It was so Fascinating Reading about all the different Supernatural Races (demons, angels, sirens/mermaids and shifters) all fighting for Power in a never-ending War. Zara is special and Very Bad@ss. She's out for revenge and meets her match in Asher!! The Spice is Excellent and had So many of My Favorite Troops, it's rare that I find this. That Cliffhanger Had Me Gasping For More..Definitely Your Next 5 ⭐ Read..

Book Name:City of Night.

My thoughts: Aurora Grey did a fantastic job with this first book. It was so much fun reading and I can’t wait until the next ones is available. Loving this story! Zara is awesome.

I have been sick for the last several days, which has made writing reviews difficult for me, but I have continued to read as much as I can. These reviews will be shorter than normal, and less detailed due to my need to complete them. I hope to be able to edit them after I’m well, and write what I really want to say. For now this will have to do.

5 ⭐️s= Perfect story, exciting, engrossing, well developed complex characters, solid plot with few to no holes, descriptive environments and place settings, great mystery elements, realistic dialogue, believable reactions and behaviors, loved this story so much I’d buy it.

4 ⭐️s= Great story, highly entertaining and enjoyable, exciting storyline, well developed characters and settings, a few discrepancies but nothing that can’t be overlooked. Believable actions and reactions, realistic dialogue, a book I would consider buying.

3 ⭐️s= Good but not great story, noticeable discrepancies, grammatical and or spelling errors, undeveloped characters or unbelievable behaviors but still readable. Nothing majorly wrong with the story, just not interesting enough for me to continue. Would not buy the book.

2 ⭐️s= Not offended by the story, but not interested enough to finish. Unbelievable characters, poor writing, many mistakes, big holes or discrepancies, many spelling or grammatical errors, characters not believable, unlikeable or TSTL.

1 ⭐️= Offensive, extremely poor writing, horrible characters, victimization, gaslighting, blatant abuse, unnecessary violence, child endangerment, or any other highly objectionable behaviors by Main characters. Would never buy this book, and do not recommend it to anyone.

Aurora Grey has once again captivated me with a series sure to pull in any reader who loves fantasy. The world building in this book, book 1 was spectacular. It starts off with a bang, you then get the connection of why Kiernan wants Zara to go undercover with The Lord of Night, Asher. This completely blew my mind and then Zara learns that her desire for vengeance has been in vain when a new Factionless usurper appears. Her connection with Asher was one she never expected, but when he learns the WHOLE truth - will the heat of the moment outweigh his craving for her?

“I do need you. But I also want you. Covet you. Crave you.” He lifts one hand and places it over my heart. “I dream of you day and night.”

I can’t wait to see where this series goes and what will happen to the power of the Night?.

Vengeance and a Secret . . .

Zara is seeking revenge, knowing just how she will carry out her plan. She has meticulously been planning her steps over the years and will take her revenge against the Lord of Night who killed her sister. A shadow-bender, the Lord of Night is feared by all in the city. Part-demon, part-vampire lord, he is skilled at the way he handles wild magic. But Zara’s information was all a lie and now she is connected to the Lord of Night and can’t break the bond. And if her secret comes out, it will devastate everything.

More to come in Book 2, so be sure to watch for it!

WOW, must read!

First time reading this other, what a great, fun read! Checked all the boxes, action, steam but not to much, intrigue, mystery, strong characters but they aren’t annoying or over the top. I don’t like books that rush in too fast or too slow, I think this book a good pace to it and really built towards the end, is a bit of a cliffhanger but it’s a book, that’s the point, it’s not a bad cliffhanger though, it’s just a “what’s next?”. I can’t wait for the second book! Going to check out more of this authors work. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a fun, action packed steamy fantasy read!

I think this book's plot leaves little to be desired.
The main female lead (Zara) hates the main male lead and all of a sudden they have this connection and she falls in love. The world is not at all very unique and feels a bit overdone.
Even sometimes with books that are basic the characters shine.
I am ending this series and am torn between 2 or 3 stars but think I go for 2 stars.

2 stars for effort.

Definitely needed more development between Zara and Asher & the entire story. It wasn’t even enemies to lovers…more like hatred to lovers. But if it’s one sided then it isn’t beef 🥴. I would’ve liked to have seen more little moments between them as well bc Zara went from “hating” him to “liking” him.
I had to force myself to finish bc I’d already made it so far but even the last battle didn’t have my attention. There were no stakes. Will not be continuing the series.

I’m going with 4.5

The book was good, and the heroine was strong without being a Mary sue and witty without being annoying. I took half a star off because the ending bothered me and the fact that things seemed to work out a bit too smoothly even when they were depicted as dire. Also the timeline, thankfully it seemed like much more time has passed then it did but it actually wasn’t more than a few days when the heroine starts changing tunes and I’m glad that it happened but I wish there was a bit more build up. What bothered me most about the end was we go from “if you die I’ll destroy everything” to “get her out of my sight” within a few pages. Obviously a lot can happen in a few pages of any story and it did here too, but he wouldn’t even listen to her. He was much more understanding of her wanting him dead than the association she has with the other character. I sort of felt like gravity of each one was about the same and maybe it would’ve been more consistent if he acted the same or at least heard her out before giving her to those people. My complaints are petty though and I still enjoyed the story, it didn’t overshadow everything or distract me from the book.

Wow! I am seriously impressed with this story!!

I downloaded this book on a whim through kindle unlimited and seeing how it had so little reviews (all of them pretty positive) and wasn’t too widely known I was intrigued.

Imagine the world of divergent with different factions, mixed with throne of glass vibes, and other amazing fantasy romance stories and this is what the book is.

Our main female character, Zara, is a badass. I always love reading a story with a strong powerful girl that kind of just belongs to herself and that’s how I felt about her. She has unmatched power and is just dope so 10/10 already loved her.

Our main male character was great as well, just the typically tall dark and handsome but assuming he was the enemy at the beginning made him that much better!! He’s powerful but doesn’t have complete innocence but he owns up to everything so I liked him even more!

The story itself was really cool honestly. It was pretty short at around 240 pages but the world building was done perfectly. Not drawn out over a million pages but I still had a complete idea of what was going on.

The character development was really good as well, I always like the man falling first, but I could’ve gone without the ending of him feeling sooo betrayed after she already admitted what her original purpose was for. But besides that I really really liked this story and will definitely be reading the next book!!

Would highly recommend for a quick fun read :)!

Loved this book, but I agree with most other reviewers - I wish the ending wasn't as rushed/jumbled. The only downfall for the great set up to a series.

This book caught me entirely off guard. I can't remember if I saw it as a Kindle recommendation or on Tiktok, but I had it sitting in my Kindle library for several weeks before actually deciding to give it a chance, without even refreshing myself on the blurb. And man, am I glad I did.

This is fantastic. It's got a vaguely "YA series that would have made me go absolutely feral" vibe to it, and I mean that as a compliment of course, as it's definitely new adult with some good spice. (I would say it's probably 2/5 -- but I regularly read pure 5/5 smut -- and the author has promised more spice in the second book.) There's a very real fantasy world and plot with some spicy scenes, vs spicy scenes surrounded by some okay plot and world building.

Anyway, the FMC and the MMC are both likable characters. Both have flaws, and while both are powerful, it's proven several times that they aren't invincible. (A major pet peeve of mine in fantasy stories.) There's some good-if-predictable twists, and the world building is done well enough that you're able to keep up with the story without any issues or confusion.

It didn't bother me enough to dock a whole star, but I did see another review mention a disappointing ending based on the behavior of the MMC. I'd have to agree...it seemed completely out of character, and quite honestly not enough of a big deal, for him to have responded the way he did. There was already plenty of other drama leading into the cliffhanger, no need to add additional unsupported relationship drama just for the fun of it.

Anyway, I devoured this in a single day and can't wait for the second book.

Good start to a complex series

The book has a apocalypse feel with four fraction all having some kind of magic ruled by one king or dark lord in the book. Every fraction seems to be angry and wants to take down the Dark lord. The dark lord has a secret and Zara is out for revenge but she is betrayed by the one's she seems to love. The ending was a cliffhanger waiting for the next book. There are a few questions I have that weren't answered in this book.

Awesome book!

I absolutely loved this book. The world of Zara and Asher is such a desolate world. All fear the wrath of the Ruler of Night but all swear their loyalty to him each year…only to try and kill him.
Zara has spent most of her life thinking he had killed her sister, hating him, wanting to be the instrument of his death.
I will not go any further other than to say things change. The best laid plans always go awry.
I can’t wait to read the second book.

Zara is seeking revenge against the Lord of Night who killed her sister. The Lord of Night is a fearsome shadow bender, who is part-demon, part-vampire lord. This is a tale of misplaced revenge. 4/5 stars.
