TEN: The decade that changed my future

Rate this book
Out now the brand-new paperback from Rylan - fully updated to include stories from the last 12 months!

Funny and outspoken, Rylan is one of the UK's most-loved presenters and a true household name. Rylan first emerged on our screens in September 2012 and in the ten years since then has become a one-of-a-kind national treasure.

In this surprising new memoir, Rylan invites us deeper into his world to reflect on all the things he's learnt from a decade in the limelight, whilst also pulling back the curtain on his personal journey. Covering everything from fame and celebrity to his mental health and identity, family and relationships to his love of reality TV, he recounts his life lessons with humour, candour and a huge amount of heart. From the moments that have shaped him to the mistakes that have made him, and the unusual pastimes that have obsessed him along the way.

With unforgettable stories about his rise to fame, his biggest regrets and his special bond with his beloved mum, The decade that changed my future is as warm and honest, enormously entertaining and full of surprises as its brilliant Sunday Times bestselling author.

This is Rylan as you've never seen him before - an intimate, fascinating and joyful insight into an extraordinary ten years on the telly and in our hearts.

You don’t often read a autobiography where the person has been so raw, honest and blunt as Rylan has been. It’s refreshing and unapologetic in the most inspiring way that is still respectful to those involved. Hilarious and heartbreaking without the desperation of pity. Rylan is truthful and he speaks about it not because he wants sympathy but because he wants to speak his truth and put the last few years behind him. What a guy.

Wow! Absolutely loved listening to this. Honest, raw and real. Heartbreaking in places, but laugh out loud in others. Definitely recommend listening to this. Just like giggling with an old friend.

I don't think there are many people in UK who aren't aware who Rylan is. From the overly dramatic crying on X Factor to uber white teeth, Rylan slowly but surely made his way into British public hearts.
Funny, self depricating and yet vulnerable and very much down to earth, Rylan allows us a glimpse of who he really is away from cameras in Ten.
Not an earth shattering memoir but a very pleasant read nonetheless.

Quite refreshing to read an honest account of what it's like to seek fame as a career, the highs and lows which come with it, including the effect the breakdown of his marriage had upon his mental health.
Possibly cathartic for Ross/Rylan to have written it is difficult to read at times but I don't doubt it was far harder to have lived through.
Not your average autobiography.

He seems like a lovely guy, but wow, this needed a harsher edit. I enjoyed some of the 90s/00s references (being a similar age to Rylan), but found it a repetitive ramble and a bit of a chore to get through to be quite honest.

I've recently been obsessed with audiobook memoirs where the author narrates their own story. I picked this one not because I am a big fan of Rylan but because I have a vague notion of him being down to earth and honest, so I thought his memoir would be worth a shot.

I finished it with a newfound respect for him, and I thoroughly enjoyed the insight into his life and the entertainment industry.
He is brutally honest about his own flaws and failings (as he sees them) and about the fact that he got into the industry for fame but now just loves the work. He doesn't hide the parts of himself that some may slag off, and I totally respect that honesty. I was interested to hear how he keeps the Rylan part of him as a stage persona, and in private he is Ross (his real name). After listening to this I reckon lots of people misunderstand him and pre-judge him.

The candid account of his breakdown and struggles with mental health after the breakdown of his marriage was raw and honest. As a society we don't discuss male mental health enough, but this book discusses it unflinchingly, and I applaud that.

Definitely worth a listen to the audiobook (his mum cracks me up when they have their wee conversations) even if you don't consider yourself a fan.

I completely changed my opinion of Rylan in Big Brother, and he is the sort of person I could imagine having in my circle of friends.
Although I don't religiously follow what's going on in his life, I do hear snippets on the radio or see bits spoken about in groups, and when I heard he had a book coming out that spoke about the vulnerable side of him, I wanted to read it.
Although his breakdown, or whatever is the best way to describe it, is mentioned throughout the book , he only dedicates one chapter to talk about it in detail, whereas the rest of the book he spoke about other parts of his life.
The chapter on his breakdown was quite hard to read, so I it was definitely good to just do one chapter that was dark, then talk about happier parts.
Great read ❤️

If you aren’t a fan of Rylan I’m taking a guess you’ll hate this. If you like him you’ll find it interesting
He’s unashamedly honest about his desire to be famous and this talks a lot about his marriage break up and the people around him. He is very sweary 🤣

I enjoyed it. He is what he says he is. A bit fake, tanned, smokes a lot but genuine. An easy listen

I love Rylan. I consider him to be a national treasure in training. A more camp Terry Wogan for our times. I love that he is down to earth and prepared to make fun of himself. This is a sequel to his first autobiography, reflecting on the decade since it was published and the ups and downs he has experienced along the way. The focal point for this book is his marriage break up and his consequent breakdown and how it has forced him to re-evaluate his life and figure out what's important to him. Nothing I read here made me change my mind about him. He's a keeper.

It was quite refreshing to read an autobiography that was so blunt and raw. Being diagnosed with GAD, I know how difficult it must have been to write such an honest book following his (fairly) recent breakdown.

I listened to the audiobook as I really enjoy autobiographies when they are narrated by the author. It was a little repetitive in places, but I could overlook that by the laugh out loud sections, especially the clips where Rylan is speaking with his mum.

Let me preface this by saying how much i love Rylan and I have genuinely enjoyed listening to him every day. However, I think a lot of this book felt like when someone explains one of their in-jokes to someone external? It was missing some kind of narrative, which meant there was a lot of things that were repeated in multiple chapters.

A fantastic second autobiography from Rylan where he discusses presenting, Big Brother, new teeth, family, being a celebrity and all of the wonderful causes he cares about. My favourite thing about this book was that he had lovely snippets from his mum in it ❤️

I love Rylan, and this was a light-hearted read. It was superficial in places, though, and I would have liked a bit more depth.

Listened to the audiobook of this, and it was mostly enjoyable and felt like a very long edition of Rylan’s radio show. Did find it a little bit sycophantic with all his celeb friends he got involved and name dropped, but I did really admire all of his chapters on his mental health struggles and total breakdown. It could’ve probably been a little shorter. Still love Rylan though!

When Rylan was first on The X Factor I thought he was attention seeking and annoying, but seeing the real side of him in recent years I have grown to like him, so was interested to read his side.
He has obviously gone through a hard time separating from his husband, although it sounds like he is better off without him in his life, and I hope he finds the happiness he deserves!
However much I wanted to keep reading, it was almost a bit too much 'I'm goody two shoes and everyone loves me' for me and having people write about how amazing he was just felt a bit boring.
It was an interesting read but not what I was expecting

As someone who also went through a pretty horrendous marriage breakdown there was so much of Rylan’s feelings I could relate too and hearing from his close family and friends and the fear and hurt they were going through at that time watching his breakdown. I wish I’d had this book 5 years ago to give to people to explain it all.

I have always quite enjoyed watching Rylan as a TV presenter and I read his previous book a few years ago. This book started strong with what appears to be a raw and honest depiction of his life over the last decade - with the defining moment being the breakdown of his marriage.

Rylan talks openly and candidly about the marriage breakdown and the devastating impact that this had on his mental health, resulting in him suffering with depression and subsequently a suicide attempt. Rylan acknowledges how privileged he is to be in a position where he was able to seek private medical help, whereby a lot of individuals struggling with their mental health are not so fortunate. I really appreciate Rylan talking so honestly about his mental health, and I hope that by more and more celebrities talking openly, mental health will become much less of a taboo subject and more people, particularly men, will be encouraged to speak out and ask for help.

I struggled with the book quite a bit as I felt it became very repetitive. Whilst I understand that the aftermath of Rylan’s marriage breakdown was very much a big part of the last decade for him, there are only so many times it can be referred back to in a book. I almost feel that this would have been better suited to an essay/article??

I also felt like Rylan very much tried to paint himself as ‘the wronged person’. Given the first line of the book (Rylan admits he cheated on his ex husband), at no point does Rylan take any responsibility or accountability for his actions or for the (huge) way in which he contributed to the breakdown of the marriage. There are a lot of not so subtle digs, and the whole vibe of the book just screamed ‘look how perfect I am’.

I found some elements to be boring. Rylan goes on to talk about things such as his make up regime, Eurovision etc. If I wanted a breakdown of the history of Eurovision, I would check Wikipedia! If I wanted make up recommendations, I would actively seek them out…you get my gist.

Not the book I was hoping for overall. What started off as seemingly raw and honest, quickly turned superficial and very much surface skimming. I think there has also been some truth twisting and a big attempt to change a narrative to shine Rylan in the best light possible. I think if we were to read a book from Rylan’s ex husband, it might be a very different story. Wouldn’t recommend personally.

I read this immediately after the first volume, Life of Rylan and that may have been a mistake.

In a way, it starts quite well. I left Rylan settled and happy at the end of volume one only to start volume two finding him busy destroying his own life - apparently. His marriage breaks down very dramatically when Rylan makes a quite unnecessary confession which leads to his husband leaving and Rylan himself having a breakdown, which frankly makes for difficult reading. However, there is much left unexplained and even more left unexplored in this book. A few clues are dropped about the marriage and Rylan's mental state during this time but really very little. If you come to this book looking for introspection and soul searching you will be disappointed- it very soon changes to more or less recapping what he told us in the first book, says quite a lot about his time on Eurovision and degenerates into lists of likes and dislikes. There are little inserts as you go through the book written by his friends and family which are quite interesting.

I was also puzzled by a little comment on p.12 - Rylan claims he has never been a heavy drinker, despite spending a lot of book one and some of book two getting absolutely hammered. Unless he has a spectacularly weak tolerance for alcohol, this doesn't really make a lot of sense.

This is really a book which is only of interest to a massive Rylan fan; I do quite like him but there wasn't really much to learn about him here

I picked this up on a secondhand book stall raising money for charity. Obviously I know who Rylan/Ross is but I have never watched any of those reality programmes like Big Brother that he is involved with. I have seen him and his Mum on Celebrity Big Brother though.

Parts of it were fairly funny and it is obvious that he is still not over his marriage break up, although he seems to think he is. It’s clear that his Mum and family are very important to him and those who stuck by him.

It became boring when he went on and on about his make up and his perfumes because, honestly, who cares? I doubt there are many men who use anywhere near the amount of make up he slaps on himself.

What really bored me was his use of the F word. It was F this, F that, F the other all the way through the book and there was barely a sentence that did not include the F word. He tells us he is very intelligent so why not use some appropriate words instead of the F word? I am sure that he talks like this all the time but we don’t need to read it.
