The bestselling puppy is better than ever. Spot's 25th birthday presents are bold, beautiful color covers that give him a great new look. Enjoy Spot in paperback with full-color covers and traditional Lift-the-Flap features. Have more fun with Spot!
Eric Gordon Hill OBE was a popular author and illustrator of children's picture books, best known for his character Spot the Dog. His works have been widely praised for their contributions to child literacy. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours.
Taking full advantage of the liftable flaps that made this series a classic, Spot's Birthday Party celebrates our favorite pup and his exotic animal friends. It's time for Spot's party, and what better way to meet the guests than a game of hide-and-seek? He bounds around the house, tasked with uncovering everyone's hiding place. Can Spot guess where to look?
Aha! There's the alligator, trying to lie flat under a rug! The bear is too large to effectively hide behind the window drapes, and the snake's tail pokes from the cupboard he's coiled inside. The hippo is in the bathtub, of course. The penguins can't stay quiet behind the coats hung on pegs in the entryway. Most of the lion is in plain view behind a green plant frond, and the monkey accidentally left a banana peel outside the closet door he hid in. Spot's mum, Sally, is under the table, but her tail peeking out from the tablecloth gives her away. Last of all is the turtle, beneath a pillow in the chair. It's a grand party of Spot's friends, all of them happy he's in their lives.
How to recreate the fun of a party in a short board book? Spot's Birthday Party does it by introducing us to the guests through a game that accentuates each animal's physical and personality traits. Making friends is an adventure, and we see that as we meet Spot's guests hidden in his house. I'd consider two and a half stars for this book; it gives the feeling of a real party in less than two dozen pages. Excellent work, Eric Hill.
Spot's Birthday Party is a story about how spot played hide and seek as one of his game with his friends.Spot became the seeker and had to find where all of his friends were hiding. Towards the end of the story they got together and celebrated spot's birthday. . I love the way Eric Hill, the author engages with the young reader/listeners.They way he positions his words is just epic. He uses bright colors for the illustrations to capture the children's imaginations. The coolest thing about the book was the lift the flap moment on each illustrated page. Each one of spot's friends were either hiding below or above an item. When i was kid i found this super mesmerizing.
Though there are many different types of media to engage children to read a book.I will still prefer the old school method, hehe👏😅 Highly recommended to all children!
I absolutely love Spot books and I vividly remember not being able to read the words, but pulling up the flaps over and over and over again, until they were so worn out and ripped. I couldn't resist grabbing this one today for the sake of nostalgia and to eventually share with my own future kids. This was an absolute favourite and apparently one of the same two books I was obsessed with as a toddler and made my poor Mum read again and again. The simple plot is what makes it so sweet and would be great to introduce to young babies and children.
Halfway through, this interjection: "It's not boring!"
Low standards. ;)
Can we please normalise kid's birthday parties to be more like this? Homemade birthday cakes, sandwiches, sausages, jelly and ice cream? Party hats and simple games in the garden? Receiving a jigsaw puzzle, or a box of crayons, or a ball as a gift? I miss humble birthdays. XD
My partner would have a serious problem with a family of talking dogs having a regular pet cat. He complains at length about the posthumously published "Estate of Eric Hill" spot books...
We read the board book with our 2-year old granddaughter who loves the Where's Spot? book. She also likes to lift the flaps in this book, but the text is not quite as fun as in the original Where's Spot? And there is no flap to lift on the last page.
I loved! Reading this book. Mainly because I got mad nostalgia after realising my mum read me this exact same book when I was a kid 30 years ago. Although the peek a boo flaps on ours were all worn and aged. But how cool I can read this book to my kids too .
My kids liked this one because it has lift up flaps. Without the flaps it makes no sense, because why would you hide and seek a surprise party. Also, a pirate hat does not belong at a non-themed birthday party.
We probably picked this up a little later than we should have, as B has never really taken to it as much as the other spot board books. He seems to like Happy Birthday Spot instead now.
My 18-month old really enjoyed lifting the flaps and finding the animals. I wish there was more to read but it's more of an interactive book so that's fine. It's a library book but I will be purchasing a copy because he loved it that much.
Spot's Birthday Party (Spot the Dog) by Eric Hill shows us a hide-and seek game that ends in Spot's birthday celebration in this lift-the-flap book. Hill's illustrations feature Spot's animal friends: alligator, bear, snake, hippo, penguins, lion, monkey, Sally, and turtle. My favorite images are curtain, cupboard, coats, closet, and final picture.
Spot's hide-and-seek search makes this party fun for readers and listeners, with appealing animals and interactive lift-the-flap format. Position words like behind, in, under and inside can be introduced to very young listeners. Recommended for pre-school and public library collections. 4.5 stars.
For ages 1 to 4, birthdays, interactive, interactive, lift-the-flap, and fans of Spot and Eric Hill.
I liked this one the best of the three we took out of the library because the flaps are all a game of hide and seek. We got these out of the library for Natalie because they have flaps. She doesn't seem to like them as much as Open the Barn Door, but it maybe because we haven't sat and read them the same and that the flaps are different.
We love all the Spot books. This is a favourite as Spot plays hide and seek with all his friends and celebrates his birthday. This is an unusual book in the series as it stars so many of the other characters including some unique appearances eg by lion and snake.
Spot is such a hit with my lap time group. One little girl was so excited she kept telling me what to do with the flaps and had quite a vocabulary too (lift, open, up...) 1/20/15
This is a good book for my younger students. It is a fun way for them to use and understand position words. It also helps them to learn about different animals.
It was okay... Maybe I'd like it more if I was a child. Hide-and-seek is a fun game, and I know I loved opening those flips as a kid, but I just don't see the point in the story :/
Mama read this aloud to me. This book was a gift from my mom's friends and her two sons! They sent a HUGE box of books, and I can't wait to read the rest.
