From New York Times bestselling author Courtney Cole, the Magic of the Christmas Season sends a woman back in time to the 1940s where she meets her own grandmother and learns the true meaning of family and the holiday.

Piper McCaulley doesn't know which way is up or down. Her gran, her last remaining family, died two weeks before Christmas, leaving Piper to reevaluate her life. Did she really want to stay chained to the family business just to hang on to this old house? She didn't care that her great-great-great grandpa had built it with his own hands. How could she make huge life decisions if she'd never even been outside of Alaska?

She needs to leave the snowy wilderness that's her backyard and see the world, and since her gran left her a battered old compass, Piper takes this a secret message from her beloved grandmother: to follow her heart.

But before she is even a foot outside the door, Piper finds herself caught in a blizzard and wakes up in 1945 in the original home that her ancestors had built--a time when her gran was just a girl Piper's age. Once she has gotten over the shock, Piper has the joy of getting to know her grandmother in a whole new way, a way that sheds light on everything Piper had come to know and not know about her own past.

Over the course of one magical holiday season, Piper must go on a journey through time to learn the meaning of real love, home, and how a family legacy can connect one another forever.

Our stories are woven together by ribbons that bind us in love.

What will happen when Piper from 2022 finds herself back in 1944 and becoming best friends with her grandmother? There's no doubt about it, Piper is in a pickle and the longer she stays the harder it is to decide how and when to reveal her secret. I loved this intimate look at life in Alaska during WW II and I know you will also root for Piper and Lane to find a way to be together. And there's a baby reindeer named Nugget! I loved this just about as much as The Christmas Dress from last year. The covers are both spectacular, too. Can't wait to see what Courtney Cole writes next.

If you love this holiday read, be sure to check out Courtney Cole's 2023 release: A Wish for Christmas. It's another winner! 🌟🎄🎅

I discovered this one while trolling reviews from GR friend, Sarah-Ellen; one of the best things about GR. Of all the sappy holiday stories I have been reading lately, this one is probably one of my fave. Not only is it a wonderfully heart-warming holiday story about family and love (with a smidgeon of romance), but it is also one with a time travel twist. I LOVE stories with a time travel twist!

The book summary pretty much introduces the MC and the primary storyline of Piper getting lost out in the AK wilderness with an old family compass that had been passed down for generations. She is out looking for some lost clients that are guests at her family resort, Great Expectations, that has also been in the family for generations. Piper recently inherited the resort after her grandmother’s death a few weeks ago. She wakes up and is found by men she doesn’t know and soon discovers that it’s 1944, and her grandmother is her age. The book summary states 1945, but it’s actually Christmas 1944.

Most of the story revolves around Piper staying with her family without revealing to them who she really is and how much she knows about them, their family and the world. She enjoys getting to know her ancestors, especially her grandmother, Marina (aka Rina). For the two of them, it’s like having the sister neither of them ever had. Piper’s parents, who were AK pilots, died in a plane crash when she was young and her grandmother raised her.

There is also a secondary storyline of Piper meeting a WWII, returning vet, Lane, who struggles with PTSD and back then, PTSD wasn’t talked about or even diagnosed and men suffering from it were certainly considered less than and ridiculed for it. It was definitely not treated as the condition it is today. Piper and Lane develop a sweet relationship throughout the story. Throughout the whole story, I kept wondering how badly this was all going to end when Piper went back to her own time (that's a given). I was truly hoping that Cole would find a heart-warming conclusion to that storyline. I wasn’t disappointed.

The character development of not only Piper, but several of the other characters, especially Marina and Lane, was very well done. The pacing was steady and never seemed to drag, at least not to me. I was always anxious to get back to the story every time I put it down. The storyline was such a good holiday story, which is exactly what I was looking for and the writing well done. I loved how Piper struggled to recognize and adhere to the mores and customs of the time period and how her 21st century vocabulary often confused those around her. I also enjoyed the Author’s Notes too. Such an important message. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.5 that I will be rounding up to a 5star review.

Home for Christmas is an absolutely delightful read and has earned a special spot among my favorite holiday reads. his heartwarming story has everything I love—family, romance, and even a touch of time travel! I could easily imagine this becoming a Christmas movie.

We are in Alaska during the Christmas season and we see our main character of Piper navigating the grief she feels from the loss of her Grandmother and trying to understand the legacy she left behind. When a mysterious event sends Piper back in time to 1944, she’s given the rare chance to experience life through her grandmother’s eyes—a simpler, slower-paced time when people cherished the things that truly mattered. She is in the original home her ancestors built and starts to enjoy the joy of getting to know her grandmother in a whole new way. Piper goes on a journey and finds the real meaning of love, home and how a family legacy can connect one another forever.

The blend of time travel, family bonds, and a touch of romance made this story so memorable for me. It’s the kind of book that fills you with warmth while also encouraging you to reflect on your own family and legacy. Seeing Piper embrace the lessons of the past and carry them into her present was incredibly moving.

If you’re looking for a beautiful, meaningful Christmas read with a bit of holiday magic and romance, Home for Christmas is the perfect choice. It beautifully captures the spirit of the season and reminds us of the timeless value of family and love.

Content: This is a secular Christmas read but no content that really bothered me. The romance was clean with kisses only. I wish the time travel was explained more but I can forgive that in the sense of how it happened and loved the storyline in general. There were 2-3 small curse words but very minimal in the beginning of the story. While our main character doesn't exhibit any faith elements herself, they did read the bible in the historical timeline at Christmas time, which I appreciated seeing.

Home for Christmas is the second Christmas book I have read by Courtney Cole. I enjoyed both stories, although last years appealed to me more. Home for Christmas is a time-slip novel set at Christmas time in both stories, one in the present and the other in 1945. Piper McCaulley has just inherited her family's lodge, Great Expectations, in Alaska following the death of her grandmother. Her parents died in a plane crash years before and her grandmother was her last living relative. She isn't sure if she wants to run the business, but for now is doing what she must to keep the business going. When a hunting party is out in a storm, she and her employee, Dan, go out to look for them. She falls into a large snowdrift and gets buried. When she is pulled out, it is 1945 and she finds herself brought to the original family homestead, face to face with her grandmother as a young woman. Once she gets over the shock, she becomes "Pippy" a young woman with amnesia. Not sure if she will figure out how to get back to the future, she makes the most of the situation and becomes part of the family. Along the way, she gives them tips and information they can use to develop the homestead into a tourist attraction and inn, as well as falling in love.

Home for Christmas was a delightful story about family, friendship and appreciating what is important in life. Set near the end of WW2, there is a lot happening emotionally for the characters. You have a young woman waiting for her fiancé to return home, injured soldiers recovering both emotionally and physically, as well as a man feeling guilty that he could not serve. Alaska is a lot wilder than what Piper is used to, so she has to deal with a grizzly that is hungry, a young caribou and finding the hot springs. This is a sweet story about finding your roots, learning what love is, following your dreams and new beginnings. I loved all the characters, especially Piper and her grandmother, as she was as a young woman. They really got to know one another and develop a caring and sisterly relationship. Christmas is the time of year the story is set, so is not a huge part of the story, but Christmas Magic is definitely in play. Overall, I really enjoyed this dual timeline story, and recommend it to those who enjoy stories with self-reflection, new beginnings, some romance, lots of family and a little magic. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Charlotte North. She does a good job giving voice to the various characters and adding emotion to the story. I will watch for more books she narrates. Thanks to Harper Audio for a copy of this audiobook upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

What if you got the chance to travel back in time to meet your grandmother when she was young?

What if you fell in love while there?

What if it was at Christmas and there were reindeer?

I really enjoyed this book. Its wholesome and cozy. I highly recommend this book.

A unique spin on the Christmas genre! A trip back in time was not what I was expecting but it was fun. This was a very sweet, festive book. The Alaska setting was described in exquisite detail. This is my second book by the author and I'm a big fan of her writing style. The historical references just made this book better. Loved it!

I loved it!! Sper din tot sufletul să se traducă și pe la noi. 💕

Home for Christmas by Courtney Cole is a great contemporary fiction that is festive, heartwarming, romantic and uplifting novel that I really enjoyed.

This is such a wonderful book that could easily be turned into a movie.

The picturesque backdrop of Alaska, snow drifts, Christmas season and decorations abound. I loved the story of Piper trying to find herself, her mission and place in life, and what her family’s legacy truly means to her. The threads of family, your past, future, love, and finding all of these things are such beautiful themes.

I also loved the storyline of Piper being able to find out more about her past, her beloved Grandmother and her own life growing up in Alaska and her family home and business. It was heartwarming, inspiring, and hit just the right spots. I also loved the romance thread as well.

The pacing was relaxing, and I really liked the progression of the characters, and the ending.

5/5 stars

Gotta love reading Christmas books in July. Piper McCaulley inherits her grandmother's guest lodge in Alaska. She is unsure if she wants to keep it running or sell. With Christmas type magic she is out in a blizzard and when she is found in the snow it is 1944. She feigns amnesia and ends up at her ancestral lodge and rooming with a grandmother when they are about the same age.

This is a sweet, and wholesome story that is can easily be a Hallmark Holiday movie. There are men recovering from the effects of world wars, pet reindeer and a chance to know a grandmother before she is worn down with life. It is also clean and very proper. I’m not a big fantasy reader but I enjoyed the characters and the story. I didn’t mind that there isn’t an explanation given. After all, Christmas is a magical season. I can see this not working for everyone and it isn’t the type of book I would always embrace. But I did this time. Thank you to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

As 2022 comes to a close, I can say that I did not expect a Christmas book to be the best book I’ve read throughout the year. Don’t judge a book by its cover — I was deceived into thinking that this would be a cheesy, cliche Christmas read, but this was anything but. This book was more than Christmas, with family, true love, and life being the main plot, all with a twist of time travel back to 1944. In the end, I was left with tears and a smile on my face.

I still have a few more books to finish before the year ends. We will see if this will be the winner of the year!

I don’t believe I’ve ever read a Christmas book like this! This was a sweet, entertaining, suspenseful and oh so slightly supernatural. One of my fave Christmas books ever.

After two pages, Home for Christmas and I almost parted ways. Piper, the main character, runs a lodge in Alaska for trophy hunters. I pondered whether I could really read a book about a trophy hunters and decided to give it a few more pages. Fortunately, it turns out that the main character and I are of similar ilk regarding trophy hunting, although she might be slightly more tolerant regarding it than I am.

Piper has just lost her beloved grandmother who has always run Great Expectations lodge. It’s been in the family for generations. Piper doesn’t have the confidence to run the lodge and is considering selling it to an individual who would carry on its traditions. However, before she can even contemplate any of that, she is part of a search party for missing hunters when she takes a fall and finds herself in 1944 where her great-grandparents run a boarding lodge and her grandmother is around her age.

The premise for Home for Christmas is certainly interesting and worth an escapist read just for that. However, as is the case with many time travel novels there are some gaps but it’s fine just as long as you don’t think too long about it.

Unfortunately there was a historical misstep considering no soldier would have gone from the Philippines to France during WWII due to the fact that the Japanese occupied the country until 1945. This too could be over-looked especially if you aren’t a student of history . . . except I just told you. Oh, well.

The writing for the most part is good except for many instances of stilted dialogue.

Christmas is dealt with peripherally so if you’re looking for a very Christmas-y novel, this might not be it.

To add a little fright to the novel is a stalking grizzly that has broken hibernation. This is countered by a cute reindeer calf called Nugget.

There’s a lot going on in this cute novel including a romance that will have the reader wondering how it will all turn out. And, how will it? I’m not going to tell you. 😉 Take a trip back to 1944 Alaska to find out.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Courtney Cole is quickly becoming my go-to author for holiday reads. She just gets it, and I totally love her style of writing. Cole gives her readers all of the cozy Hallmark vibes, yet isn’t overly cheesy. She perfectly blends sweetness, charm and holiday cheer with serious, real-life topics. I’ve now read three of her novels: The Christmas Dress, A Wish for Christmas, and my very favorite of all, Home for Christmas. This is a lovely little granddaughter-grandmother story with a surprising spin that I did not see coming. I’d describe this one as a historical romance with a side of family history.

READ THIS IF YOU ENJOY:

- Alaskan setting
- Historical fiction
- Hallmark movies
- Time travel
- Family dynamics & history
- Christmas vibes & magic

I can honestly go on and on, raving about this book all day. It will be the #1 holiday book that I recommend to everyone for years to come. Heck, there’s even a freaking reindeer! I absolutely loved everything about it!

Jedno z zaskoczeń tego roku!

Znalazłam ją na Legimi, potem w swojej bibliotece. Zaciekawił mnie motyw kompasu i świąt.

O sile rodziny, marzeniach, przypadkowych spotkaniach.

I was given an ARC in return for an honest review. Here goes...
This novel was just what I needed at this moment, a warm cozy Christmas read. Its storyline is simple and the writing style flows easily allowing for a quick read. Piper is lost in an Alaskan winter in 2022, the first without her commanding Gran, her only family. Piper isn't ready to take up the family business of running the lodge by herself. So she foolishly rushes out in a snowstorm only to arrive in 1944 the week before Christmas and get taken in by her great-grandparents and younger Gran. Of course, she cannot tell anyone who she really is (the whole space-time continuum conundrum) and miraculously finds the perfect man, a veteran home from WWII with PTSD. I appreciate that the novel kept with the social norms of 1944 and wartime and didn't devolve into a scandalous romance novel with the introduction of Lane Hughes. The novel dragged a bit in the middle with Piper drooling over Lane, but slowly it meandered back to the McCauleys. No the main themes of this story are family, love & grief, and sticking to your beliefs no matter what. Plus it has a happy ending! I'm a sucker for a Christmas story with a happy ending! It's a staple of the genre for me and this book doesn't disappoint.

I absolutely loved The Christmas dress last year but Home for Christmas might just be my new favorite by Courtney Cole! Set in remote Alaska, bush pilot Piper falls and hits her head during a blizzard only to find herself somehow transported back in time to the late 1940s.

Taken in by her grandmother's family, she gets to experience what life was like during wartime, with rationing and limited resources. She also gets to know her grandmother better and ends up falling for recently returned soldier, Lane.

Full of heart and lots of sweet tender moments, this would make a great Hallmark Holiday movie and was really well done on audio narrated by Charlotte North. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a good time twist novel!!

Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this book. I did appreciate the initial suspension of disbelief and the Hallmark movie feels, but there were some plot holes and odd plot points. The ending especially was difficult to believe. I wanted to love this book because the synopsis sounded clever and cute.

Home for Christmas by Courtney Cole is the second Holiday story of her’s I am reading. This is one of the best of this season. Piper’s grandmother just passed 2 weeks ago and Piper is left thelodge torn and continue the family legacy. She does not really care about her family’s history and cannot seem to connect.Piper gets caught in a blinding snowstorm while searching for missing Lodge guests. She collapses and wakes up in 1945 in the lodges original state. This was a fantastic and heartwarming family story. Wrap up your holiday reading with this one. Enjoy!
