Samuel has one goal in life: fix his broken core.

What does he not want? A bossy, overprotective, possessive, teasing dragon sticking his nose in business that is not his.

Even if he is sexy. And supports Samuel on his quest to find the lost Sousa Mage Clan.

Utterly beside the point. He does not need a dragon boyfriend.

(Un)fortunately, Dimitri disagrees.

Outstanding!!!!

Wow, that was so entertaining, I couldn’t get enough, I was quite sad that it finished, I was try to see if there were more pages to pull out!!!
Wings 'N' Wands is the new series that followed the previous, Scales 'N' Spells, the plot was incredible, new adventures, new mysteries. The all characters were intriguing in their own way, the main characters were adorable, the sex scenes were very pleasant, exciting action scenes and also tense moments that caught my breath away, congratulations to A.J. Sherwood and Jocelynn Drake, superb job!!!

I also have this book on Audible, once again Joel Leslie gave a splendid performance, he just gave life to this story, made even better, his acting is formidable, I love his commitment, he is full all the time, even if he said wrong the some Portuguese words, it didn’t mattered to me, he was fantastic!!!

3.5

This would have been rated higher if there wasn't a random chapter including Nazis and Hitler. It was really jarring, and just isn't something I personally feel belongs in a fictional book that isn't historical 🤷🏼‍♀️

If that wasn't mentioned (it literally added nothing to the story) then I would have rated higher.

I enjoyed the relationship between Samuel and Dimitri, probably the best pairing so far I think, but it's more of a HFN than a HEA.

I have a strong suspicion the next book will feature Sam's twin Salem, and he may be the first mage to mate to 2 dragons...

The good
+ Dimitri's friends. They seem like good guys, even if they don't always know how to read Sam's verbal and non-verbal cues
+ Dimitri trusting Sam and suppressing his instincts so Sam could do his job
+ Sam taming Dimitri's dragon with cuddles and affection
+

The neutral
o Samuel had a twin brother. He called his twin brother to catch up exactly....... zero times. I do believe he asked him to come to Rio, but more out of necessity than love, even though Salem was a pretty good brother as far as I could determine
o I know Dimitri said it a few times, but I still think he could have been more adamant that Sam was perfect for him, with or without . That he would gladly , and be perfectly content. The focus was a little too much on 'fixing' Sam now
o I want the story of Vasily and Luka, please!

The bad
- During their first meeting, when Dimitri was still a complete stranger to Samuel, Dimitri kept touching Samuel without his consent. In fact, Samuel actively avoided physical contact, and Dimitri kept forcing it again and again, even when Sam was downright scared
- Samuel was very clear in stating his boundaries to Dimitri. Dimitri ignored them all. Ignoring verbal non-consent is not cute or romantic, it's creepy and a major red flag
- Teasing is only fun when the person being teased is also having fun. Samuel did not enjoy being teased. In fact, he started hating Dimitri because of it
- All Samuel wanted was for someone to view him as a person despite . For someone not to treat him like he was made of glass, or like he couldn't make his own decisions, or like a generally lesser person. Dimitri did none of these things. In fact, as soon as he learned about Samuel's condition, he became even more limiting and overbearing. He did not seem like a good match to Samuel at all
- Samuel's parents were horrible human beings, and Sam just kept on forgiving them and making excuses. Just because he's related to them, doesn't mean he's obligated to take their abuse. I wish he had told them off, instead of letting them walk all over him. Also, this plotline was just left and never looked back to again

Sam was so clear on what he wanted in a partner. The partner he got was the exact opposite of all of that, which was such a pity. Then, the rest of the book was focused on 'fixing' Sam, like he wasn't good enough exactly the way he is. Add to that a toxic family that gets forgiven just because they're family, and this book was definitely not for me. I'm afraid to say that this is the first full-length novel by either Sherwood or Drake that I would not recommend. I was disappointed with Dawn too, so I really hope the rest of the series will be better.

Back with the dragons and mages!

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous series about the fire dragons and their rediscovery of mages in Germany.

So I was super excited to now move to the hotter climes of Brazil and find out more about the ice dragon clan.

This one follows an archaeologist who is searching for a mysterious missing mage clan that he's been researching and who he believes may hold the answer to fixing his broken core.

When he enlists the help of the Valeri clan his path crosses that of Dimitri and fate chimes up.

There then follows a delightful tale of one dragon - oblivious until it's shoved under his nose that Sam's his mate - and one reluctant not-a-mage mage, who cannot commit to bonding with a dragon when he's broken.

On the way there's sarky banter from Dimitri's teammates, sexy times in a tent, booby trapped mountains and hidden secrets in the jungle.

I can't wait to see what happens next.

I just couldn’t get into this one. I didn’t like Samuel but decided to wait until he met his mate to see how that went.
Well it went and I quit.

I was so curious to see where this spin off series was going to go after the end of the previous series. With the Jaeggi defeated there isn't some big bad out there waiting to pounce. But man was this adorable. I loved Dimitri and Samuel. Dimitri's teasing of Sam was just such fun even if he was a clueless dragon to start. I felt for Sam as well. He's struggle so much to find a way to belong when all his life he's basically been told he's defective. This research trip might be his only hope.

Of course nothing goes quite as planned and there's a whole new discovery waiting to help dragons and their mages out there. I just plain love this world and the characters in it. I'd happily read about all of these dragons and the mages forever.

Oh, yes. We're starting strong! Dimitri and Samuel make the cutest couple. A grumpy sunshine with a sunshine grump. The ideal for the pairing! And the story! I can't wait to see not only more about the Brazilian clan, but how the current plot line will pan out!

***3.5***

It is a nice start into a new series. I enjoyed the "Scales and Spells" universe and couldn't wait to continue in it in this spin-off.

I liked the quest and the progression of the storyline, the characters are loveable. I love Dimitri as well as some of the sides like Luke and his dragon. I hope to read about them soon and hope it is going to be a triad as I could not bare for them be separated.

Sadly, I don't know why, but I didn't connect with Sam and Dimitri as a couple. In Embers we got to know Dimitri a little and he felt quirky, lively, as if he were always on the move, seeking out the joys of life. We didn't get to see this personality in this one. And as far as I gaged Sam's character, I'm not sure he is compatible. Maybe we just didn't see Sam more relaxed and only his rigid self, as his only focus was to find the Sousa and a cure.

I wanted to like it, I really did. The blurb and tags sounded so fun. But sadly I ended up with more peeves than things I liked.

What I didn't like:
- Maybe cos I'm missing context of other series but world building a bit shallow and elementary
- I probably should've expected this with the mate thing but I am very over insta love
- As some have mentioned the Hitler thing was a bit weird and abrupt
- Samuel was too cold for little to no reason - like meh dragons, so possessive and hind brain, oh wait he is kinda hot tho
- Dimitri was both incredibly pushy and yet seemed like he had no self worth for someone who wasn't willing to bat an eye at him
- They get better as they communicate but idk

What I liked
- It helped me pass time
I was invested in Samuels journey to fix his core but like before, I feel like I'm missing important context that may have been explored in the other series

I feel like concept was good but execution didn't quite meet my expectations.

*2.1 stars*

First dragon shifter story, and I was really excited to read it especially with the superb cover and the ratings of the book. But it was an utter disappointment: the whole premise lacked tension and the book was just boring, even with the final resolution of the "plot".

I didn't enjoy the story, nor how it was written. It felt shallow, with too much telling and not enough showing. It felt like I was missing the whole worldbuilding, maybe because I didn't read the previous books from the same universe, but I'm not certain it would've helped much.

Concerning the MCs, Samuel was really unlikable and the chemistry between them was nonexistent. To be fair, instalove isn't my cup of tea, but here the two guys had absolutely nothing in common and magically happen to fall in love because... just because I guess.

So yeah, I wasn't a fan.

This is literally a case of Dmitri having enough love (and faith in them) for both of them. Broken core or not, you're my person and I wouldn't want it any other way. 10/10 MC

Dmitri chose Sam again and again. The affirmation in this is everything. That 'in spite of everything' kind of love.

"You're perfect the way you are. I love you the way you are."

"What if they can't accept me?"
"Then we leave. "

I loved the humor in this.

"If you two need a second round before we get on the road, we don't mind."
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Vasily!

And Dimitri going, "See!? They don't mind."
💀💀💀💀💀
Unhand him, you horndog!

Dragon fruit flavored lube is a little on the nose, no?

"When did you become so evil? I don't remember you being so evil when we first met?"

"How am I evil? Just because I've learnt to cuddle you?"

The multiple names were also a running gag that I eventually loved.

Dmitri and Samuel. Samalam. Samael. Sammiecakes. Samaiem. 😂😂😂😂

I wonder if any future story for Luka and Vasily ends up MMM?

Dragons & mages

Cute, quick mm read. Nothing too heavy or complex. Samuel was a little irritating, Dimitri all blustering dragon.

Random reference to WWII wasn’t necessary in my mind. Repetitive in places. 3-3.5⭐️

Brilliant as always

Fantastic start to the new series.

AJ Sherwood is reliably superb with both endearing characters and storylines that draw you in right from the start.

This book reminds me of instant noodles. It looks good and it's hot, but the substance is missing. All the flavors are the same and will always be the same, it can be consumed without thinking too much of it, there's no surprise to it but it's still comforting and that's about it.

The book looks like it's compiled according to a previously proven recipe:
1. A two-dimensional "annoying mother" who bullies her children in the name of a happy life, the same as in many other books, check.
2. "Relateable" clueless hero who gets lost even in the middle of a playground with a "seemingly unsolvable" problem, check.
3. Super cool pack of not wolves, but dragons! Super-powered but can demand sweets in a cutely manner, check.

And it goes on and on. The super-cringy and very "Deus ex machina" first meeting, one MC grumpy and stubbornly non-communicative, the other not accepting set boundaries and cutely groping someone who doesn't want it.

Everything is instant, cute, easy to digest, and empty, just like instant noodles.

3.5 stars rounded to 3. This is the first time an AJ Sherwood book is not 4.5/5 stars for me 😭

I adore the Scales and Spells series and reread and relisten to the audiobooks regularly so I was super excited for this book. While overall I loved it, some elements fell flat for me.

The Good
- Great plot structure and pacing
- Excellent world-building
- Cute dragons! Loved all the dragons so much!!

The not so good
- Sam. While I was very sympathetic towards him in the beginning, I just found him grating and a little selfish by the end.
- The Romance. Related to not liking sam. There needs to be a fine balance in stories with cold/tsundere characters and unfortunately here I just ended up feeling sorry for Dimitri and didn't care for the relationship conflicts. Felt like Dimitri was the one making all the sacrifices while Sam just yelled or got angry at Dimitri and got his way.

It's totally on me though as I just didn't like Sam and don't like characters like him.

DNF at 46% due to a build-up of distrust in where this is going and serious worldbuilding flaws. And then I read a DNF review wondering why the random Nazi chapter.

I... No.

Good call, me.

The worldbuilding has been bugging me the whole time, but the centuries the dragons went without mates should have had some psychological effect. And how did mages "disappearing" even work when they can detect mage magic? My suspension of disbelief has hit the ground. I suspect this is a series linked to a previous one, that I didn't read for similar reasons, but if so, there's been no data dump to fill in new readers. And, sure, it's a romance. But the (frustrating, inconsistent, rather illogical) romance is within a fantasy world that needs to make better sense for me, and failed.

The author’s Scales ‘N’ Spells series was my first introduction to dragons and I love that series. I was really looking forward to the first book in the Wings ‘N’ Wands series but Ruins missed the mark for me. I tried to figure out why I was having trouble with the book and I realized that I wasn’t getting any joy or fun out of it. I didn’t feel the connection between Samuel and Dimitri at all. I also missed the feeling of being in a different world of Dragons and Mages it just felt like a science trip to the jungle. I will continue reading the series and hope that the next one gives me a little more magic.

First off, this is one of those books that you have to read the books that came before it. Especially the series that came before. Otherwise, you’re gonna be confused.
Ruins is a really great continuation to the story. I love that we’re now following a different set of dragons. While getting a little bit more history about the dragons and mages.
Samuel and Dimitri are cute couple to introduce this new collection. You’re getting the same slightly awkward emotionally fragile mage, paired with the slightly overbearing yet completely adoring dragon. It’s slightly the same as the stories that came before, just in a different setting. But despite the formulaic take to the store, it’s still a really good book.

I usually love AJ Sherwood, but I feel like this series is running it's course. While this series is focusing on a new kind of dragon (the ice dragons) the overall beats, stories, and characters feel too similar to previous stories told in her dragon series. Here's hoping the next book in her series feel a little more distinct.

Not bad, not good. Samuel was a hard character to like, although I did like his independence.

Storyline is a bit off. I find it hard to believe that archeologists being at a site for that long and still don’t know the language or made any discoveries.

We meet Dmitri in the original Scales 'n Spells series which I highly recommend! This is Dmitri's story where he meets his mate, Sam. Sam is on a quest, alone in Brazil, to fix his broken core. Sam is no pushover and is not impressed with Dmitri's overprotectiveness. The adventure is awesome. I loved the sexy times and who seriously would not appreciate their own air-conditioner in a very hot tent. But things take a turn when they stumble on the lost mages but it turns out to be the Jaeggii clan. I love seeing the Burkhard clan and hope there will be more in the next book. I can't wait!!

I'm kind of torn on this because while I enjoyed it, I'm not sure I ever completely warmed up to Samuel. Granted, his parents treated him like an infant and didn't give him any credit for half-a brain cell, on the other hand he was so overly prickly about everything. Lost in Brazil, doesn't speak Portuguese and gets pissed off when a dragon basically saves his ass and he's hired this same group to help him and he treats Dimitri very rudely and doesn't seem to appreciate that they are working for him. It was more like grudgingly agreeing to go with them when he bloody hired them.

So while I get he was prickly due to his medical issues and how he'd been treated at home, but he was just bloody rude most of the time so I didn't really like him much. Dimitri was sort of a typical good-time dragon, easy going, smiling and determined to win Samuel over using stupid nick-names and pulling his ass out of the fire (which Samuel still didn't seem to appreciate). I did enjoy their trek through the jungle and the adventures they experienced there, that was fun and you get to see a few of the characters from other series, so while I enjoyed it, Samuel just kept annoying me and didn't really win me over even in the end. *shrug*

I would really love to rate this higher, but the historical inaccuracies are mind-blowing. In the 14 hundreds there was no ships passing through the Brazilian coast. Sousa is a Portuguese name, so if that clan is as old as suggested in the book, that name was impossible to exist in Brazil, our fleets discovered Brazil in the 15 hundreds...and the list goes on....one thing I liked, the Portuguese is very good, not that Google translate shit. But, for someone who was born in Portugal, like me, the historical inaccuracies are jarring. With a little more historical research this book would be perfect.

Bored

It just dragged way to long for me. Its a a story with so much layers that it just becomes a chore to read after awhile. About 30% I was bored to tears. I skipped to 60%, and that's when things started getting juicy between these two, but then soon after. Same old boredom again, it just drags so much! The information we learn is not in anyway really exciting.
