111: A Call to the Life of the Kingdom

Rate this book
The Sermon on the Mount contains some of Jesus's most powerful and penetrating words in the Gospels. The words Jesus spoke within the Sermon confront us in numerous ways and challenge the status quo we often settle for in our faith. Jesus leaves no stone unturned, challenging all who claim to follow him to evaluate what it means to live in faithful obedience. As you read, you will find yourself challenged and encouraged to live as a citizen of Christ's kingdom.
Each page within this book is an invitation for you to dive deeply into the message of the Sermon and allow yourself to be confronted by Jesus's words. Moving through the devotional, you will explore each verse individually, allowing time to dwell on the depth each verse deserves. However, you will explore each verse as it relates to the broader themes and movements of the entire Sermon, providing a comprehensive picture as well. As you go through this devotional, may you be challenged and encouraged by the words of Christ, creating in you a desire to heed Christ's invitation to follow him.

What would happen if we really listened to Jesus preach? What if we really paid attention to the teaching in the Sermon on the Mount? Hampton spent time in the passage, meditating on it and memorizing it. It changed his life.

Hampton shares with us his insights into the radically different way of being in the world this passage reflects. He describes what the Kingdom of God looks like and how we are to live in it. The book contains 111 devotions, generally each one concentrating on one verse of Jesus' sermon. Hampton includes a few questions at the end of each reading for continued thought. He suggests memorizing the verse for the day, realizing how that writes the kingdom principles onto our hearts.

Here are a few of the insights I really appreciated. Matt. 5:5, that Jesus is our example of the quiet strength of meekness. Matt. 5:8, that being pure in heart means being consistent in belief and action and not being hypocritical. Matt. 5:12, how different God's kingdom is from the world we live in. Matt. 5:30, what happens when our desires take precedence before the kingdom. Other topics include our speech, what we are willing to do away with to follow Christ, loving our enemies, the kind of love that gets the world's attention, how placing Christ first is really best for us and those we love, and much more.

Hampton desires we pay attention to these words of Christ, not because it will make us followers of Christ but rather because we are followers of Christ and we desire to live as He wants us to. This is a good devotional on the Sermon on the Mount and I highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the author. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This one is a really interesting idea for a devotional, taking all 111 verses of the Sermon on the Mount and creating a daily devotional from each verse.
They are the words of Jesus that we may be very familiar with, perhaps too familiar to a point where they have lost their meaning. This will revive the words in your heart.
If you follow the suggested pattern of reading it will give you a thorough understanding of the passage, and the teachings of Jesus, especially if you follow the suggestion of memorising it too.
Taking up just a few minutes each day, Mark has managed to distil the teaching effectively into short sessions, written by a man who has clearly meditated on this section of scripture, knows it intimately and can explain the precious words in a way that can apply them to our lives.
It is full of good, sound teaching and will be helpful in getting the true meaning out of the passages. There are questions at the end of each section that will prompt you to apply the teaching and live it out, to live more in the Kingdom.
For me it highlighted the breadth and depth of truth that there is in the Sermon on the Mount and how much life giving teaching it contains, to really help us live a kingdom focused life.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus introduces a completely radical and counter-cultural way of living in our world today. As Disciples of Christ, we need accountability and this new book from Mark D. Hampton guides us in accomplishing this in a very merciful but practical and straightfoward way. The author takes the time to unpack each verse from the Sermon on the Mount and takes you deeper into it.

With the Holy Spirit's help, I was able to do the hard work of assessing where I needed to come up higher in my love walk with Christ so I can begin to shine my light brighter in this dark world. We can’t fix what we don’t see in ourselves and this devotional guides us through the process.

The Holy Spirit will also open our eyes to areas of our relationship with our loving Father that may be fractured. God desires for us to be healed and whole in Christ. Not just for our own good but to enable us to walk securely as disciples of Christ so we can shine brightly in this dark and lost world! I highly recommend this book. - Donna Miller, Book Review at fresh grace for today.

I thoroughly enjoyed daily walking through the Sermon on the Mount and seeing how it’s all interconnected not just split up into bits and chunks as we tend to do with it.

In all honesty, Mark intended this book to be read over the course of a few months, but due to my own lack of consistency in Scripture it took me just under 10 months. Why mention this? Because there was hardly a single day during those months that I wasn’t reminded of the Sermon on the Mount or it’s teachings weren’t playing a part in my life. Each time I was reminded of Christ’s goodness and how my innate fleshly desire is to run away from Christ and to the false idols in my life. Walking through Mark’s devotional was convicting for me on so many levels and reminded me of the joy and need to really, truly, deeply study Scripture!

I also loved the model of reading up to the verse you were reading to in the Sermon. While I did not end up memorizing the whole thing I found myself being able to remember more and more of it even as I wasn’t reading it for my time with the Lord.

I’ve read the Sermon on the Mount more times than I can count, but I have to say I have not focused on them verse by verse with true intensity that Mark does. It was obvious that Mark has meditated and deliberated on every word of Jesus for a long time.

I wanted to rush through each day to get to the end and write a review but it was like having a conversation with Jesus by focusing on a line at a time. I found myself meditating and praying through each verse each day and even measuring my thoughts, words and deeds against each day’s message.

The words of Jesus for many of us Christians are ones we’ve memorized in the past but with Mark’s insights and wisdom we are brought into the presence of Jesus beyond rote memorization.

This is a book I will be reading again and again.

I absolutely love this book which expounds on the sermon on the Mount in bite size chunks that make a great daily devotional. I found this book to be very thorough while remaining easy to understand and apply. The author gives an detailed commentary for each of the 111 verses that make up the sermon on the Mount. I can honestly say I understand the sermon on the Mount and what it means to live the kingdom life more than I ever did previously and I’ve been a Christian for 47 years. Where has this book been all my life.

I highly recommend using this book for a Bible study group. I’m leading an online Bible study through this book right now.

I liked the devotional style of "A Call to the Life of the Kingdom" by Mark D. Hampton. Somebody could use this book as a 111-day devotional, although I went through the book faster than that. Mark covers a verse each day from The Sermon on the Mount. He began at the beginning of the sermon, Matthew 5:1. One of my favorite days was day 16, as Mark explained Matthew 5:16. It is a great verse to live out. Mark challenges his readers to live a life of the Kingdom. Each day the author includes some thought-provoking questions to ponder. I recommend this book as a daily devotional study.

A nice way to spend some quality time working thru the Sermon on the Mount. Could certainly be useful as a Daily Devotional. I worked thru it a bit faster reading several verses each day with the accompanying discussion. Hampton has nuggets of insight about the text scattered throughout the book. The ideas the author shares help us to understand what Jesus is saying; they are challenging and encouraging, as Jesus undoubtedly intended!
