I read this book with my 6 year old daughter. She loved it!! I love that My Little Pony has been kept alive and redone in such a big way. This is not some quick read done by early elementary students. It is a very substantial story that still has a lot more to go.
I love the idea that fans of the original series grew up and created their own version. This entire universe is packed with nothing but positive messages, too.

I really enjoyed starting this new MLP story. I was a fan of FIM and was wondering how the new generation would compare. I love the direction this story is going and I look forward to seeing more.
This graphic novel is great for fans who want to see where the series is heading. It looks like it's in good hands.

A mane-tastic adventure of friendship and unity!

My Little Pony, Vol. 1 by Celeste Bronfman, Robin Easter, Mary Kenney and art by Amy Mebberson is the first volume in this new My Little Pony Series and was a fun filled mystery adventure to save magic. After the awesome adventures with the Mane-ificent 7, a new troupe of ponies are here to explore and live their own adventures. When one of the three crystals that supply their world with magic is stolen, all of the ponies’ magic begins to glitch. Will the new group of friends be able to reunite the crystals and save magic or will it create a new normal? Let’s follow Sunny, Izzy, Zipp, Pipp, Hitch, and the super awesome sidekick Cloudpuff, and their new adventures!

First off, I love this new generation of ponies! They are similar to the previous group, yet have complete identities and stories of their own! I did things a bit backwards by reading this first and then watching the movie that introduces them, so I was a little confused. As a whole, there is some backstory that is only in the movie that will come up in the story, but it will not leave you completely lost, by no means.

It has so many themes built into the story, such as unity, diversity and inclusion, friendship from different perspectives, being authentic on social media vs creating personas, and it’s only the beginning. With five volumes of stories to tell, I am pretty excited to see where this goes! There is an overarching story with several mini stories within, kind of like multiple episodes making up a season of a show. Due to this, it was a little confusing to follow the story at first, since it goes completely off topic for one of the side stories. But that story also stands as a way to get to know some of the characters a bit better.

Additionally, there are many things that directly correlate to our world and open up space for discussions within families and schools. Things like boundaries on social media; oversharing vs sharing just enough to help others and vulnerability vs fear based posts. Although there are some areas that visually feel a bit too much due to the wording on the page, it could come off a bit overwhelming for some readers, so having support ready will help.

The illustrations are so beautifully designed and are in full alignment with the My Little Pony art from the films and tv, but with an edge. It’s beautiful coloring and expression through the lines and creates the full extent of emotions that the ponies go through at different times.

This is a great middle grade graphic novel and will do well for ages 8-12, with the lower ages having some support. It is great for family reading as well as school and will be fun for everyone! If you love My Little Pony, this new team of friends will excite you!

Next book:
As the story leaves us on a cliffhanger, I am eagerly waiting for the next issue! Still to come, My Little Pony Vol 2-5 (names TBD).

I'll start with the art. Cute! While generation 6 has the 3D design, this comic renders it back down to traditional 2D design, very in line with the previous MLP comics. Not hugely innovative or stylish, but if your hope was for more of the same, you've got it! There's plenty of background details and ponies, showing how the world has integrated since the movie. A lot of big emotions on faces, not just of main characters, but from the background ponies, as well. Nothing anatomically over-reactive (except maybe for Izzy, but that's Izzy), but just emotive.

Now, the story...that's just odd. Discord believes that the three pony types being together again will result in disaster, and so he takes a Unity Crystal. The Mane Five go on a series of adventures to recover the crystal, prove Discord wrong, and keep ponykind that anything is amiss. We're given no reason for WHY he has become anti-friendship (at least in this first volume), just that he thinks this reintegration is a bad idea. I could definitely see this leading to a more interesting character revelation (something about how he felt losing Fluttershy?), but there's no foreshadowing, yet. Let's hope volume 2 makes a bit more effort on explanation.

There's also this odd thing for issue 5, where the story of how Discord left his imprisonment is completely changed. Now, I might have believed that the true story was lost to history, but Fluttershy and Discord's redemptive friendship is actually mentioned in earlier issues. So it's like a retcon...within 4 issues?

That said, it's enjoyable! Very fun, a quick read. And if what you're coming here for is "more ponies," then that's what you're getting. They're cute, they're brave, they're loyal. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for volume 2!

When the previews for this new MLP generation first came out, I have to admit that I was very skeptical. Maybe it was because I didn't really find the toys all that appealing with their more hybrid look and feel. But I did enjoy the movie and thought that I would give the graphic novel/comic books a try as well. I will say that, if these are linked to a TV show or episodes, I have not watched any of that. Just the one movie while I was cooking in the kitchen.

I really didn't know what to expect of these stories and how they would weave together with the Canterlot of old. The first and longest part of the story did a very good job of reintroducing the idea of this new MLP generation as well as refresh our memory around the crystals. I liked that as the story progressed we got to see some of the history and learn more about what happened to Canterlot, to the original (but not the original original) ponies, etc. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Discord who, while kind of a baddie or maybe a baddie in this storyline, is a fun character who I really liked in this story and before. I think it's because he has dragon properties, because I also really like Spike. Although where is Spike in all this?!

I don't want to spoiler too much, but if you enjoyed the movie and are an MLP fan, this is a great read. And as always with the MLP comics, great illustrations that are true to the screen versions.

My family has been enjoying the My Little Pony show recently. My son loves Pinkie Pie from Friendship is magic, so we showed him the Next Generation. He really liked Sunny. This is a continuation of Netflix’s MLP: The Next Generation. I do recommend having some knowledge of the Friendship is Magic series as well as Next Generation due to the cast of characters and the big mysteries. The collection is bright and colorful with true to series art. The dialogue and direction both feel natural to the characters. If you or your reader are fans of both MLP series, this is probably something to pick.

Overall: 4.5/5

"My Little Pony Vol. 1 : Big Horseshoes to Fill"
by Celeste Bronfman, Robin Easter, and Mary Kenney, is a cute graphic novel following the adventures of the new generation ponies from the "My Little Pony" universe.

After one of the Unity Crystals is stolen, the Mane Five (Sunny, Izzy, Zipp, Pipp, and Hitch) go on an adventure to find the Crystal and the thieft and save magic. Both the story and the illustrations were very cute.

I requested this graphic novel more for my daughter than myself, and she definitely enjoyed it. To be honest, I did also. While I felt that she was a bit young to get all the humor (she's four), she certainly enjoyed the overall experience, as she is a "My Little Pony" fan.

I think this is a great, fun read for young and not so young fans of the "My Little Pony" universe. I would definitely check out the next volumes in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and IDW Publishing for an e-arc of this graphic novel. All opinions are my own. "My Little Pony Vol.1: Big Horseshoes to Fill" will be released in April 2023.

Having grown up with My Little Ponies everything, I was super excited to have the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel, With nods to the original My Little Pony squad, this series brings to life a new generation of ponies (and problems). I love the colors and the drawing style! I love the backgrounds too.

Sunny has grown up hearing stories of Canterlot her whole life. When one of the crystals that bring peace and harmony to the land goes missing. she might just have the chance to find it in her search. However, dreams aren't always what we imagined when fulfilled. Can Sunny and her friends fight against a chaos dragon and restore balance to the land

If you love My Little Ponies, you'll love this new squad! Highly recommended for 4th grade+.

Also - there's themes/lessons on friendship, responsibility and inter-species peace (there was fighting between earth ponies, Pegasuses and unicorns and this story alludes to how bad it was and how ideal harmony is).

First off, this definitely requires an understanding of the reboot “Mane 5”. I’m not so much a fan of the new series, but I have enjoyed the comics in the past and decided to jump into this one. It is a collection of issues 1-5, which is why it seems to suddenly stop and start at tangents.

Overall, the artwork was really cute and the story was interesting. It’s not bad a continuation of the series.

Thank you to @netgalley and the publisher for this free eARC.

Having two girls aged 6 and 4 I think it's pretty much self-explanatory why I downloaded this title. Needless to say they loved it but so did I....
A dash of mystery, a slew of beautiful colors and a bunch of brave little ponies fighting together to save their world...

Nice little comic book for little princesses and their moms.

I highly recommend it.

Thank you netgalley for this ARC. I am leaving an 100% honest review.

I believe this is one of the most precious comics I have ever read. I have not looked at anything My Little Pony related since the late 80s early 90s, but it brought me back.

I think comics are a great way to get children who may not be interested in reading to go for a literary adventure. This had me smiling a page at a time. Thank you

Definitely A Book For Little Kids!

This book has four stories about the My Little Pony Group. The stories were interesting, but are definitely meant to be read by children under the age of 10. I am an adult and, while I found the colorful artwork beautiful, I found the storylines were a little too childish for me. Therefore, while this book might gain a 5 star rating by a child, this old lady gave it 3 stars.

What a fun start to a new generation of ponies! This Volume starts off right after the events of the movie and brings readers on a fun new adventure. I loved the story and was very excited to see a familiar face come back, which I was not expecting. Excited for the next volume to see what will happen next!

Quick little read. Loved the comics. I did show It to my 2 year old and I think she likes it to. She the one who picked it out. I might reread it to her later on in the year but it kept us both pulled into it. 5 star book

Don’t love this for my 8 YO daughter. The storyline is meh, the characters are silly. I get that it’s just an ancillary product for the movie, and it’s okay for my daughter as a quick, fun read, but not my favorite and definitely wouldn’t recommend it to others.

I have not watched the cartoon reboot (yet). But this was a cute fun read. It is a sequel I guess to the cartoon that takes place some time in the future. I enjoyed some adult jokes thrown in like the Monkeys paw story at the end. I get the appeal of the series. Will read more.

This was a cute read and my daughter enjoyed listening and looking at the illustrations as I read. It was a fun time!

The book starts out with magic being tested once again, this time because one of the Unity Crystals has been stolen. The Mane 5 are off on another quest to save magic while also learning more about themselves and the ponies they call friends. This graphic novel helps build on what Netflix started and I think it works really well.

I think my favorite character is Izzy. I like that she can be unsure of herself and also on the weirder side. She is hilarious and keeps the jokes rolling. Each pony has their own personality though and I think we can learn something from each one.

My daughter was very invested in the story and kept asking me to read on even when it was coming up on lunch time. She didn’t want to put it down!

The illustrations are also nicely done. I just love the vibrant colors.

Overall, this was a fun read as me and my daughter both liked it. It could be a bit dry at times only because it’s hard to fully see the ponies personalities when it is written but it is still good.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for a complimentary earc to review! All opinions are my own.

NetGalley and the publisher, IDW, provided me with a copy.

As the title states, this new generation of ponies have big shoes to fill, after arguable the largest era of the franchise, Friendship is Magic, has come to a close.

Set after the events of the Netflix movie, which introduces this new era of My Little Pony, Volume 1 of the comics collects issues #1-5.

Do these fill the shoes? Well, it's not a bad start. With the return of an old friend, the comics are definitely enjoyable, although I still feel these characters are a touch of a dip in quality from the previous era, although that might just be due to the lack of time spent with them, at least compared to the previous characters.

Either way, if you liked the movie, or even just miss FiM, give this a shot.
