Creating Andy: eBook edition. A light science fiction novel.

How does a Neanderthal boy end up in 21st Century America? It wasn't intentional. There were no mad scientists or diabolical plots involved in the creation of Andy.
There was only a lusty lamebrain grad student, a series of crazy accidents, and a group of individuals dedicated to making the best of an unexpected situation.
And there's Andy himself, charting his path with determination, humor, and love.

Heartwarming book about the accidental birth of a baby Neanderthal. The story follows Andy's childhood into young adulthood. It explores the challenges he faces and how he overcomes them into leading a happy and productive life among modern humans. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone.

As a writer myself, I found Owings’ “Creating Andy” to be a unique concept that was quite well written. The style is smooth, with fascinating details that were clearly researched by the author and then amplified to make for an intriguing, entertaining tale of re-creation that one is forced to think is actually feasible. The characters are well developed, and one sees in the variety of personalities a reflection of what we see in real life today—prejudice, bullying and ignorance as well as curiosity, compassion and understanding. In that way, the Owings actually gives us a social commentary on our current world—at times leaving us to think that parts of the Neanderthal culture might actually have been better than the mixed up, hate-filled world we live in now.

Yes, a fine bit of writing that I encourage others to read, enjoy and then think about. Perhaps we all have, still, a bit of the Neanderthal in us—the parts that are good and worth exploring inside us. Owings gives us a guide on how to do that.
