about time i reached the end ! it was a nice read if you can handle triggers, mentions of trauma (rape) and murder.
but nonetheless i do believe saki aida is very knowledgeable in her writing and story which makes it believable - or, at least, as believable as actual American fbi shows- !!
you'll be -kinda- missed yuto and dick (this name suits him way too well.. he's such a d sometimes)
Once more we follow Yuto and Rob as they continue their search for Corvus. First things first - I’m more than glad that there was more of Dick here than in the previous volume. I really like Rob and Yuto’s friendship but sometimes the constant flirting pissed me off so bad, considering that Yuto made it clear he already has his one and only.
The story jumps all the way from New York, to Colombia, then back to LA. There were a lot of places here lol. Story flowed nicely, although it fits more into a police drama rather than a yaoi. Sure we get a cute moment between our lovers but it’s on last few pages - same as with the previous volumes. Is it bad? Not necessarily. I’m a big fan of police drama and this series was really good to read, I’m glad I managed to find a translation.
The Corvus storyline was…disappointing? I guess I could say that. I expected something more. It was nice, sure, but I feel like it could’ve been done better considering we’ve been trying to catch him for three volumes.
I liked the ending :) Yuto and Dick’s reunion was really sweet and I’m glad this asshole finally came clean with his true feelings. About damn time man 🙄 Still, I’d highly recommend this series if you don’t mind stronger topics.
Despite Dick being more of a dumbass than ever, much idocy by many of the characters, and a lame end for Corvus, the biggest disappointment for me is that this book is the end of the series. I really like the characters she's created and I'd like to see more of them. Actually, it seems to me like the author has spent three books setting up a really interesting premise for a detective series. Yuuto can work for the police, Dick can be a PI (or whatever), they can solve crimes together! (And we can find out Dick's freaking real name. >.< ) Maybe I just think this is a good idea because I keep comparing this series to City of Glass. I mean, Yuuto is a little less clueless than Nobuyuki about emotional matters (though more clueless about solving mysteries, I think), but Dick IS Sydney...well, if Sydney's angsty past was that Nobuyuki was murdered instead of just moving to Japan, that is. And Rob is totally Steve.
(Was I the only one who started slashing Rob and Ernesto?)
The finale to a very exciting and plotty series - its BL, sure, but while the romance is central, this is not a love story. Actually, this is the kind of book I could see on the "normal" shelves as well. There are some loose ends and some things do get resolved a little more quickly than they would in reality, but overall this series is excellent and among the best BL I have read so far.
And since it isn't set in Japan it's worth pointing out it doesn't have some of the inconsistencies other books I've read have had. They all seem very American, and there is no Japanese-style bathing or bowing (basically the Japanese equivalent of Western writers forgetting that Japanese take their shoes off when they enter a house). So that was cool.
I definitely will read the rest of the Deadlock books (there are some spin offs) right away and more by Saki Aida as I get the chance. And I repeat, I highly recommend reading this if you have the chance.
