A superstar in her native Norway thanks to the immense success of Nemi — also reprinted in the 1.35 million-circulation UK Metro newspaper — you too can enter Lise Myhre’s witty, wonderful world!
Norwegian cartoonist. Her most famous cartoon is Nemi.
After a short study of graphical design at the Santa Monica College of Art in California, Lise Myhre started her career as an artist, earning money illustrating CD covers and t-shirts. She also participated in cartoon competitions and started giving contributions to Larsons Gale Verden, the Norwegian version of Gary Larson's magazine The Far Side ("M.P." in 1996).
From 1997, Myhre was given her own page in Larsons Gale Verden, "Den svarte siden" (English: the Black Side/Page), and this developed into Nemi. From 1999, Nemi was a guest cartoon in the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, and from 2000 as a regular. The first Nemi album was published the summer 2000, and it was a great success. Since Myhre changed publisher, from Bladkompaniet to Egmont, in January 2003, there is a new Nemi magazine published every 6 weeks.
Nemi, with a circulation of more than 70,000 copies, is now one the two most popular cartoons in Norway, next to Pondus.
Nemi is today published in approximately 60 different newspapers, magazines and websites in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, England and Scotland. Amongst these, the Metro (in England, Scotland and Ireland), Dagens Nyheter (Sweden), Ilta-Sanomat (Finland) and Dagbladet (Norway) are the biggest.
Lise Myhre has also illustrated poems by Edgar Allan Poe and André Bjerke.
She is married to musician ICS Vortex (Simen Hestnæs), and they have a son, Storm, born 2007.
Nemi have always been a favourite comic book of mine. From the daily comic strip in the local newspaper, the her own monthly comic book to these trade paper backs. Lise draws the comic in such a skilful way and the stories are just awesome. You can really recognize a lot of yourself and your everyday life in the stories and that's a great bonus.
Vol. 3 is better than Vol. 1, but Nemi is still prone to be a pretty pretentious and judgmental character. I found if frustrating to read the bits where the punchline is "bikini season" being around the corner - and when she has these dysphoric moments, like shopping in the maternity section when she is clearly skinny. My favorite part of this book was the short story about Nemi going skiing as a child and running into the abominable snowman! 😍 I would love to see a longer version of that as a full book of its own! It would be a terrific book for both children and adults.
Look I just love Nemi at this point. I love that she is simulateously scary or intimidating and childish. Her selfawaresness that runs deep enough so that she realizes it is in some aspects pointless or feeble is almost too relateable. Other points still stand, like the artstyle, like the graphics, like the side characters.
I found reading Nemi a fun, laugh out loud experience. I liked goth girl Nemi Montoya’s dark humor and refusal to be a responsible grown up. And I enjoyed her cynical outlook on life and how she rationalized her misadventures to herself and everyone else. Her misadventures include botched job interviews, bar hopping, disastrous dates, well pretty much any ordinary activity gone wrong or right, if your looking at it from Nemi’s point of view. Nemi is also honest to a comical fault. I felt I had so much in common with Nemi from her fascination with Lord of the Rings, to buying clothes in all shades of black and her choices in music. She’s my inner me, at least like I’d want to be if I didn’t have to be a responsible adult.
Nemi is written and drawn by Lise Myhre. Nemi was originally written in Norwegian then translated to English. I love the illustrations, they are simple and gorgeous. Nemi is gorgeous.
Even though I found the majority of the Nemi comic strips hilarious there were a few that didn’t make much sense to me. I think this was because the humor was most likely lost in translation. But there weren’t many of these strips to be a problem for me. I plan on looking for more Nemi comics in the future and finding copies of the previous volumes.
There is a quote on the back of the book by Tori Amos that I think sums up Nemi perfectly:
“There is a little of Nemi in all of us – this I believe to be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
This was my first time reading Nemi and I absolutely loved it. I'm definitely gonna pick up volumes I & II. Nemi is great, she is laugh out loud funny. Speaks her mind and doesn't care who likes it or not. Her attitude and dark humor are what make her lovable to me. Nemi is addicted to sweets, and a fan of Lord of the Rings. That's a girl after my own heart! Ms. Myhre has created a endearing character both in the art and personality.
Nemi is a comic strip from Norway, created in 1997. She can also be found in the UK in the Metro newspaper. All three volumes of Nemi are also available in the U.S.
A different sort of comic from what I'm used to. I prefer comics that are novel-length, amazingly artistic, compellingly innovative, or have a solid narrative.
Nemi is more like the Sunday newspaper funnies I read as a kid. Nemi is the title character, a sort of of goth/metal young woman with a charming air and biting sense of humor. She's a character that I fell in love with, but I don't think it would ever work out between us.
Una gótica noruega en el paro a la que le da mucha pereza asumir las responsabilidades de la vida adulta y prefiere ver pelis con dragones, escuhar metal y jugar a la Play. ¿A que es adorable?
