Storm Riders #1

Song of the Storm

Rate this book
I live on the edge.

Literally, that is. Spending my days busking on an Irish clifftop and my nights as someone’s holiday fling. I won’t bore you with my tragic childhood, but it’s left me allergic to complications. So I probably shouldn’t be falling for Bren, my bandmate and best friend.

It’s time to find a new guy to distract me from this disaster. Lucky for me, three new guys have blown into town with a storm.

Fintan, all soft smiles and wise eyes. Airech, the gorgeous flirt, so out there he makes me look shy. And Cap, who's more of the strong, silent type. In that, he’s twice my size and doesn’t say a word.

I’m sure a torrid night with one of them would help me get over Bren. That’s before I find out that not only are they ancient Irish gods, but I’m the one who's summoned them. Somehow. And following close behind them are evil demons and the end of the world. Even worse, I can't forget Bren, and now I’m catching feelings for these gods, too. All three of them.

I’m not living on the edge anymore. I’m falling off it.

Song of the Storm is the first book in the Storm Riders series. A medium-burn MMMM gay harem paranormal fantasy romance, it features friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, ancient Irish gods, angels, demons and lots of passion and adventure. And it includes two bonus prequel chapters!

An earlier version of this story was published as Storm Boys; it has been totally reimagined and rewritten and also has 25,000 words of new content.

Davis has written everything from angsty but sweet MMMM fantasy to fun, cozy MM fantasy. But one thing is certain — her heroes (and anti-heroes) will always get their happily ever after.
Living in a small seaside village in Ireland, she hasn’t given up hope of running into a selkie (dragons may prove to be more elusive).
In between writing, she wrangles cats, watches Asian dramas and ugly cries over the fates of fictional characters.

Very close to perfection!

Actual rating 4.5 rounded up to 5
Would have rated this a complete 5 if only a slightly better job had been done with the editing/proofreading. On the story and characters this is a solid 5/5. Wow! Absolutely loved this cast of characters and the setting in Ireland. I have never been to Ireland but after reading this book I can almost smell the salt air and see the rolling green hills. On to book 2!

Not quite a 3.5 star, not quite a 4 (I’ve never broken it down to quarters before...)

Well isn’t this exciting!!

A little backstory here... I first saw this book sometime during the summer and immediately added it to my Amazon wishlist awaiting its release... I mean mm harem is like totally my thing right now... anyway I was completely disappointed that shortly after the book became unavailable, and I’ve waited, somewhat patiently, for its release ever since.

So to my surprise a few days ago I got an email with the author giving me an ARC copy (although it’s not really an advanced copy since the book is now available), and I instantly stopped what I was reading and grabbed this.

Now to be honest, I didn’t have the greatest hopes... I mean the MM harem/poly books that are out there now aren’t exactly earth shattering writings, and add to the fact that this is a debut novel, I truly believed anything could happen, but in reality I braved myself for the worst.

Thankfully to my surprise I absolutely enjoyed it. The world building was definitely the most enjoyable I’ve read in quite a longtime. I not only have a big love for harem stories but I also have a love all things mythology and lore, especially Irish Lore, so this was a nice balm for my reading slump.

I will admit that the book wasn’t perfect and it could have really used an additional beta reader and/or a good edit. There was definitely some editing, issues including my least favorite which happens to be a misplaced or missing “ quotation mark separating story from dialogue... lucky I only found a few instances. There is also an issue on loc 1939 where Devins name is mis-written as “Debbie”... that really threw me off for a minute or two.... (I would add the highlights but do t think I can since it was a mobi or pdf copy).

I did have some issues with some of the slang, but I assume that’s just what to expect with some cultural differences, and it had some slow pacing in a few areas... which is also expected for a series opener. So I had no really issues there, but thought I would mention.

Obviously I haven’t gotten into a lot of the story, and events in this review... and that’s because I believe this book is better explained by reading, even the author is somewhat vague in the blurb, and for that I was truly thankful. I did love all the characters but Cap was 100%... he was the big, beefy, silent virgin :::swoons::: and I loved him.

Anywho, I will defiantly be anxiously awaiting the release of book 2!!

All right

This book had the potential to be a great book, harnessing Irish mythology, but I felt that it fell flat. I really wanted to like Devin, but he is too tempermental, aand selfish. He leaves his friend, Bren, hanging and disappears for weeks at a time in one instance when he stays with the storm gods, without even giving word that he is fine! The sex scenes are sudden, without any reason for them to happen, just that they do, making them feel false. They are just thrown in there for the sake of having sex in the book, no real passion. The ending was a bit of a surprise that I did not expect, so that was nice. I would like to know what happens, but not sure if I want to go through another story like this one. I wish the story was more fluid. Things happen in a chopped, pasted together manner.

I quite enjoyed reading this first book in the Storm Riders series. The Irish mythology aspects transcended time and space, brought to the modern day, and twisted the lives of one mostly human man, his "supposedly" human BFF, and then three more immortals. I loved the way the author uses both music and the sea as a medium for magic.

If you at all love Irish Folklore this is a must-read for you.

A roller coaster edge-of-your-seat adventure!

Wow. Davis Lavender is an author to follow. I read several hundred books a year and this is most certainly one of the best. A fascinating story combined with a kick-ass writing style made it impossible for me to put the book down.

The story takes place in Ireland. Devin and his good friend Bren are best friends who make a living as street musicians. Devin, who lost his parents when he was a young teen appears to have some mysterious special powers and unknowingly summons three ancient Irish gods through his music. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed which culminate in a spectacular happy-for-now ending with a bit of a cliffhanger. The next volume is due before summer of 2020.

Ms. Lavender is a master storyteller and weaves her wicked sense of humor throughout a story which had me crying, laughing, and ultimately feeling good in my heart. It’s rare an author is able to pull that off. If you enjoy a paranormal story with moody and pouty gods then you will love this book. Can’t wait for the next. Kudos to Ms. Lavender for reminding me why I love to read.

Big waves of seawater bring change

Body surfing through portals. Harp and fiddle music played on sea cliffs. Ancient history and legends of Ireland long forgotten. Rumors of Gods and hints of mythical and mystical beasts.
Shape shifters and angels good and bad. Batman and a Hawk. Spells and magic defending mortals from immortals and immortals from each other. Dark destiny and stormy weather. Family glimpses and immortal protectors. Soul collectors and memory collectors. Something for everyone.

Great story

Wow what a great start to a series. I was pleasantly surprised by how great the plot of this book is. The storm boys are awesome but I love Bren too! Definitely left us on a bit of a cliffhanger. I’m super excited for book 2!

DNF at 55%. I think the main issue here was the sluggish pace of the plot and the rather artificial/forced progress of the relationship, but the characters were not too likeable either. Actually, besides Fintan most of them were pretty annoying.

Storm boys

An Irish alt-world set on the Cliffs of Moher, two buskers encounter three old gods. Tasked with preventing an Irish disaster, Lavender backfills their histories as a polyamorous relationship builds. Woven in is the sea, music, and the eternal battle of good and evil.

I enjoyed this book and will definitely read the sequel. I love poly romances and I find it’s hard to find good ones with 4+ in the relationship. I felt the characters mostly had pretty distinct personalities.

One thing that was hard to keep up with was the world building. I understood the basics, but some of it left me confused. I think maybe because a lot of it was dumped in chunks but eventually I think I worked it out.

SPOILERS AHEAD

I feel like I read a lot of this because I was waiting for Bren to join the relationship (fingers crossed in book 2!) I feel like the three gods got hooked on devin pretty easily and I can see a relationship with Bren taking more time which I’m all for. I can also see one or some resisting and Bren being sort of a tragic character that they coax out and treat gently eventually.

I’d just love to see the role reversal with Bren being more taken care of I suppose- especially since Devin seemed to just drop him after meeting the gods. I feel like he treated Bren poorly and I’m waiting for the turnaround.

It took me a while to get into this book. It was slow paced and at one point I was seriously wondering whether to simply give up. Things finally picked up at around 50% into the book.

Song of the Storm was an intriguing read - it was like watching a broken jigsaw come together, one piece at a time but never quite getting the complete picture.

Bren truly surprised me - his actions towards the end shattered my heart. I wasn’t too keen on Devin: he was selfish. He said he was in love with Brenn but it didn’t take him long to drop his long time friend for three gods. His love for Brenn wasn’t convincing.

I’m not sure if I’ll read the next book. It was a challenge getting to the end of this one and I was completely drained and exhausted when I finished.

I have no idea what's even happening

I can't pronounce these words. I don't understand their back stories, the portals, who the bad guys are or what they want. Some people are mortal, some are immortal, some are quasi-mortal some are part immortal. Some are Death, some work for Death, some formerly worked for Death. Some are dead, some are alive, some were never born. Some are angels, half angels, former angels, soon to be angels, auditioning to be angels, I don't know anymore. I understood the horse demon. That's it. I don't even understand who the other two Gods are supposed to be and I don't understand their powers at all. Not really a medium burn. Somewhere between slow and medium. One orgy. I like the dynamic with the four (five?) men so I might skim through book two. I give up on this plot though.

A unique experience! Every minute spent reading was a real pleasure. Engaging word building, complex contradictory characters, carefully thought out subtle details and mythological elements woven into 1 exciting story full of unexpected twists. A plethora of heart-warming or gut-wrenching moments that alternate and flow into one another and leave the reader reeling.
For anyone who enjoys poly books this is an excellent choice!
I received the book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
