After years of being called stupid, Elodie has this one chance to prove she can succeed. But rescuing her grandad’s failing honey shop might end up proving her a failure. Sure she has the creative vision, but she knows nothing about bees, the business is drowning in debt, stinks of damp and mould and the gorgeous man next door hates her. And if this weren't enough, an old secret threatens to ruin everything, unless she finds the long buried answers that might finally allow her to have her happy ending.
This book had a different feel from the others. It felt more serious. I don't know how to explain it because I don't mean the other books weren't adult, or anything, but this book, I felt that the author got into her flow. Additionally, we have new characters taking centre stage, whom we have never met before, but have links to the island. We see Pierre and Gabriel, as well as George and some villagers. However, in this book, we have Hedge. The grumpy man who runs a Honey shop. Things are going Pete Tong and a chance of the stars aligning, Elodie, Hedge's Granddaughter, is going through a rough time, ups and leaves Manchester to go and look after him and the shop.
Elodie remembers the good times on the island. She has nothing in her history to tell her otherwise. In walks Hal Hemingway, who has the derelict house next door. A family that was shunned by gossip, and talks of the war. To say he is prickly at the star is an understatement. His mother and sister don't want him to go to the island, but all the owners are called.
The discoveries we have along the way have nothing to do with the island. So the last book, Pierre discovered the festivals and the beauty. Whilst we still marvel at the beauty, this book is a focus on the people. The fierce loyalty of family, of a small village and how something small can destroy something fragile. And yet, rumours of lost loves, missing children, and the war can also bring together 2 families. I loved briefly meeting Hal's sister, especially as there is a spin-off series and Haneen is the first book!! I will admit, one bugbear was how quickly Hal and Elodie forgave each other, I'm going to pretend they had a long heart-to-heart off-page!!
The conversation between Hedge and Hal at the end was heartbreaking, and we learn why he was called Hedge - my heart literally broke.
We discover so much in this story about the past, and how it haunts the present day. We learnt the beauty of the island but of forgiveness. I would love to go to Hal's Hemingway's Hideaways cabins as they sound beautiful, and knowing how much love and effort went into making them, just makes them more special.
I have loved every book in the series, but this one has an extra incentive with the history woven through. Plus, anything to see Sweeny and Morris gone, is a win in my books. Although I have briefly read the blurb for the next book, and after the ferry scene with Hal....I think I need a lot of tissues already, because I'm gutted.
A magical series and can't believe the next book is the last one......
This was another really good book from this series. Elodie heads to the island of La Canette. Her grandfather needs her help. Hal is also headed there hoping to sell the old family home. This was an easy to read story. I liked both main characters and their chemistry together. The additional historical story was an added treat. Definitely recommend this book and series!
A fantastic book, it has a mixture of my favourite genres going on. A gentle romance, elements of a historical novel, some mysterious moments and seeing people trying to immerse themselves in a new challenge. Gorgeous location, I’ve never been to the Channel Islands ( apart from watching Bergerac as a teenager!) so it was fascinating to see how different life is on a small island and the cliques that were formed and the baffling bureaucracy that occurs. I do enjoy a hate to love trope too so seeing Elodie and Hal slowly rotate to each other was lovely and entertaining. A sweet story that at times had some surprising stings in the story, certainly it was an intriguing book that kept me guessing about what really happened in the past and reading on avidly to see how things were achieved by the characters who had returned to the island as adults.
A gorgeous book that has a lot happening in the story but what I really appreciated and enjoyed was the trying something out of your comfort zone which is new and challenging. I loved the main character and how much she cared for her grandfather made me feel all warm and goodness gooey inside. The story has a slight historical element and even a little mystery. My favourite trope of enemies to lovers in the romance builds nicely as the plot progresses. I never thought that there could be so many different types of honey and the descriptions had my mouth watering. This is a book that deserves to be read outside in the bright sun because that is what I feel the story is bright sunshine.
I highly recommend this series of books 😊 the magic of an island full of history & character with islanders new & old coming together to help lost souls find happiness again. This book is no exception. A lovely story of two strangers returning to their respective family homes only to find they have to fight unscrupulous property developers, old rumours & even each other. I couldn’t put the book down I felt invested in their happy ever after.
I have read all the English channel books and have enjoyed them all mainly as the la Canette seems like such a neighbourly place to live. I feel the ending felt quite rushed and hopefully there will be another book to learn more about the characters.
Loved this book set in a gorgeous location with great characters. The story has been meticulously written in great detail about plants and honey and the history of the island. Romance and a mystery made this an enjoyable and entertaining read.
An evocative story with twists and turns right up until the last page. Rose captures island life superbly the close knit community the family feuds and long memories. A beautifully constructed story and I heartily recommend.
Waited ages for the next book in the series I've read it in two days because like the others I couldn't put it down. I'm already looking forward to the next book PLEASE
Another fabulous addition to this series! Elodie returns to La Canette to take care of her grandfather, who we’ve met in the previous books. It turns out that his honey shop is failing as much as his health so she extends her stay to try and save it. Next door Hal has returned to sell the family home but that proves to not be easy and why is he so reluctant to engage with them?
