Rate this book

The last Rurouni Kenshin volume that I read. It is also the end of Shishio Makoto arc story. I am not interested to continue into the next arc, so for a feasible future my rating will stop at this volume.

I consider Shishio Makoto as the best arc of this series. I admit that I haven't read further, but heard the next arc is against the opponent from the same sword style (with different variants). It is not my kind of story, to have a final arc with opponent from the same style as protagonist.

After a lot of thought I’ve decided to stop reading this series. It’s just getting too violent and bloody, and while I endured it because I liked the core characters I can’t ignore it anymore and have decided to quit. Not to mention the showing of the bad guys being in Hell and being happy about it really bothered me.

I’m glad things ended well for Kenshin and his friends overall, as I did skim the rest of the volumes just to see how everything ends, and I’m glad I tried the series as I did enjoy most of it, especially the earlier volumes.

It’s not a bad series, it just ultimately ended up being too violent for me and I wasn’t fond of where the rest of the series headed when I skim read the rest.

‼️Content‼️

TRIGGER WARNING: a man committed suicide by slitting his throat (the action is not shown, but his bloody body [R] is left behind)

Language: damn; what in hell; hell (as a swear word and a place); where the heck; heck

Violence: fighting with weapons and hand to hand (PG-13 to R); injuries and blood (PG-13 to R); characters are punched in the face; a man is thrown against a wall; a character’s hand is broken; a character is stabbed through the back/chest (R); a man spews fire from his mouth and his blood literally starts to boil (R); a man combusts into an inferno of flames and dies; a man committed suicide by slitting his throat (the action is not shown, but his bloody body [R] is left behind)

Sexual: a woman wears a cleavage showing/very low dress; shirtless guys; a woman says she only provided “pleasure” for her lover; a character is gay; a character used to be a prostitute and lived in a brothel

Drugs/Alcohol: characters drink and one boy is clearly drunk

Other: death; a building is set on fire and explodes; people stand on a mountain of skeletons and bones in Hell

The Shishio Makaoto arc has concluded. Tbh, that was the best part of this series. I sincerely doubt I’ll continue with the rest of this series.

Shishio was wiping the floor with Kenshin and his crew, and preparing for finishing blow had not Aoshi arrive to disrupt his plans. Shishio was better than Aoshi skill-wise but the one-time Oniwabanshu leader's twin kodachi style allowed for a strong defense that allowed enough time for Kenshin to revive and continue the fight. In the end, Shishio was defeated.

Shishio was impossibly strong, and took advantage of the preparation time and of the terrain to the utmost. Kenshin and his crew were weakened and wounded by the gauntlet that they had to defeat before facing Shishio. The unforgiving of the final battleground near the furnace of a giant engine certainly sapped their stamina, but Shishio was prepared for anything. In the end, Shishi was undone by his damaged body. He may have survived burning, but it damaged his inner body thermostat. The irony does not escape the reader that Shishio spontaneously combusted after surviving terrible burns all those years ago.

This was not mere arc, and it should be called the Kyoto Saga. This was a seven volume build up that culminated in a satisfying conclusion. This was easily the high point for the manga, and the anime, even when it went to stories not originally in the manga.

The final battle with Shishio was impressive to say the least. It does make me ponder where this series goes from here. With more than a hundred chapters left, I'm excited to see what could possibly top the Shishio arc.

Rurouni Kenshin, Vol. 17 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (139–148) of the on-going manga series.

Saitō Hajime's attack fails, due to a metal headband that Shishio Makoto wears. He tells Saitō that before he was set on fire, he was shot in the head and he has the headband to avoid a similar injury. He defeats Saitō easily and Sagara Sanosuke attacks him with the Futae no Kiwami. Sano lands a solid hit on Shishio's jaw but his hand is shattered and Shishio defeats him.

Shinomori Aoshi then arrives to find Sanosuke, Saitō, and Kenshin unconscious. He battles Shishio, giving Kenshin time to recover. Kenshin's swordsman spirit also revives Sanosuke and Saitō and they watch as Kenshin fights one last time with Shishio, whose body temperature rises to a dangerous level.

Komagata Yumi pleads with Kenshin to break off the fight and Shishio stabs through her into Kenshin. Kenshin is horrified at what he considers Shishio's betrayal of his lover, but Shishio retorts that he did what Yumi wanted him to do. She confirms this before dying in Shishio's arms, promising to wait for him. He continues the fight with Kenshin, but his body becomes so hot that it spontaneously combusts.

Shocked by Shishio's death, Sadojima Hōji destroys the base, but Sanosuke carries Kenshin to safety. Aoshi also escapes, as does Saitō, although his survival does not become known until later.

One month later as Kenshin and his friends are recovering from their wounds, Sawagejō Chō visits them. He tells them that most of the Juppongatana have joined the Meiji Government, while Yūkyūzan Anji requested to be in prison, and Hōji committed suicide. Seta Sōjirō and Iwanbō were never found.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The Kyoto arc finally concludes as the battle with Shishio Makoto ends, which takes the combine efforts of Himura Kenshin, Saitō Hajime, Sagara Sanosuke, and Shinomori Aoshi to overpower him and even then – it is because that Shishio Makoto overheats and spontaneous combusts – an odd ending. In the end, most have joined the Meiji Government, one requested to be imprisoned, another committed suicide, and two goes mysteriously missing.

All in all, Rurouni Kenshin, Vol. 17 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

And with that the Kyoto Arc is over!
I guess it goes without saying that this whole adventure has been the best part of the series thus far, but certainly not without it's flaws. The arc exemplifies the strengths of the series, but I'd also argue it equally highlights it's (few) glaring weaknesses. Narratively speaking our leading men are by far the strongest characters. Kenshin, Sanosuke, Saitou, and to a lesser extent Aoshi are given the most to do and thus end up the most interesting, inspired, and entertaining. In contrast... boy I think the Ten Swords kinda sucked? Aside from Anji, Chou, and Soujirou, the rest were just a bunch of jobbers who came and went with little to show outside of a few gimmicks. I'd argue the same could be said about Shishio. Thematically his relationship with Kenshin - and to a greater extent Soujirou - was excellent food for thought beside Kenshin's Superman-like mannerisms and philosophy. But when it came to the final battle, not only was he boasting in front of a bunch of already half dead men before their fight even began, he then went so far as to just straight up be his own undoing? What a dummy! If anything his self-proclaimed "useless" lady love Yumi wound up being the smartest and by far most memorable member of the team, which is WAY more than I can say about any of the other supporting characters of the series.
But I digress. Great series and a great arc, but I think moving forward I'd like if our supporting cast were either given proper growth or just tossed aside altogether.
Onto volume 18!

As I continue to read through this series, I feel as if I may need to go back and reassess my ratings. Not that I think they are too high, but that some of these books maybe, just maybe should reach the level of 5 stars where I placed them at 4. That’s how good, consistent and engaging these volumes have been. Pages 22-23 hit me in an epic way. I just feel as if the pages and panels leading up to it truly get you caught in the emotion. The way the pages are laid out allows for a quicker flow, but the art demands you slow down a bit and enjoy it. This is a battle which is a long time coming and it does not disappoint! Shishio Makoto is a villain truly worthy of being acknowledged as one of the toughest of tough baddies out there! Page 117-118 had serious emotion (and the pages following) for me as well. WHAT….A…VOLUME!!! If the series had ended with this volume…I would have no complaint, but there is more! Now we will see what is left up the sleeve of Nobuhiro Watsuki.

Seram.

Alright, so given that Manga is more of an ongoing story split into arcs that are in no way split up between volumes. I'm going to be reviewing story arc by story arc. This will then be copy and pasted throughout all of the 28 Volumes of the Manga. Also, let's get this out of the way. This is 1. A Reread and 2. Spoiler Warning I won't be directly recapping, but I will use points to describe my thoughts and feelings.

Tokyo Arc - Acts/Chapters 1-47 - Rating: 8/10
-A great start for a historical fiction. A bit on the nose, but I generally find with historical fictions you have to pretend that no one knows what time period you're talking about so it's nearly unavoidable.
-Great character work. Each Character introduced in Kenshin's gang are examples of how the war has hurt these people. This reflects on Kenshin as he was a key figure in the war that caused all these people that he growing to love, pain. Whether it's Yahiko who lost his parents to draft of war. Or Sanosuke who joined the rebellion and through political means lost his captain and the person he admired most. Or even Kaoru, who attempts to run a dojo in a time when Swords are forbidden by the government. All of these are monumental in Kenshin's redemption from the wrongs he has committed.
-My issue is moreso in how these conflicts come up. They seem very much villain of the week story. And most Shonens are when they initially start and I understand that. Some do it great. (Yu Yu hakusho) some do it terribly (Reborn) I think RuroKen does it OKAY. There are a lot of conveniences and Kenshin is the type of character who can nearly fix everything at any point because he's Kenshin and he outclasses the people they face.
-This arc is really split into 4 mini arcs. Beginning 6/10. Sanosuke Arc 9/10. Jin-E Arc 7/10. Oniwanbanshu arc 10/10

The Kyoto Arc - Acts/Chapters 48-151 - Rating: 9/10
-Phenomenal Arc. Kenshin must tackle with the concept of whether he can keep his oath against a man who is arguably his better. The man who replaced him as Hitokiri. Shishio Makota.
-The jupponganta, the villain group of this ark are all well designed and each one makes perfect sense why they would follow Shisho. Whether they love, respect or just want to kill him. Each one feels like a tough nit group. As for Shishio himself. He's one of those cool villains. I understand why he is and why he's so charismatic. But as far as being an actual villain. He doesn't do much. I think that's to his benefit. His whole concept is realistic in terms of, he has a time limit to how long he can fight. Which is why he created the jupponganta. But that doesn't make him still do so little in the story besides sit and wait for Kenshin to show up. My only real gripe.
-Kenshin conquers all of his fears and redeems himself completely towards the government by stopping the man that replaced him. Mastering Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu and finally allowing his friends to help him. It's a profound and beautiful arc that makes Kenshins character shine.

Jinchu Arc - Acts/Chapters 152-255 - Rating: 7/10
-Where in the last arc we saw Kenshin redeem himself in the eyes of the government. This is the arc where we see Kenshin redeem himself in the eyes of himself. When his Brother in law returns from China and threatens his friends and everyone he's grown to care for over the last 151 chapters Kenshin struggles with the reality of what murdering his late wife has become of Enishi.
-To me, there are three chunks, but they all work towards the same goal. The beginning.(7/10) The Flashback. (9/10) The End (5/10)
-The flashback is the strongest part of this. It was the missing piece in Kenshin's character and it really helps us figure out how and why he became who he became. He smiles constantly because his late wife wanted him to smile more. It's so sweet and tragic.
-However, the actual arc collects a bunch of random riff raffs to challenge Kenshin and his group of friends that also kinda have "beef" with him. But this and the end were pretty much the weak parts of this arc to me. The one dudes whole problem was that he got his hand cut off....and Kenshin DIDN'T kill him so...he decided to lose his whale-like mind and join a terrorist group. Two of the others had people they loved died. Who weren't good dudes btw, they were villains. But still...revenge. The other guy had some kind of clan responsibility but when he was defeated Kenshin just told him to go back to his family so it really wasn't an issue. And the final guy...well he didn't even have a beef. He just wanted to test out his mega unrealistic puppets. I'm talking Naruto unrealistic for a historical fiction.
-But all of those dudes at least had reasons. The villains in the final part were all just throw away villains that even Watsuki reveals himself were just throwaways. They aren't too compelling and giving the characters we have grown to love a final fight may have been appreciated by me the initial go. (because I was 14) I just found myself not caring whatsoever about these fights that lasted a whole volume by themselves upon rereading.

Overall, Rurouni Kenshin is a fantastic historical fiction centered around fantastic real life historical individuals. It's ability to write honest, true characters of the time period makes me remember them and I truly found so much more good in this series with the reread. The biggest issues this series has is staying consistent and opting to expose it's lack of authenticity for grenade launchers. Overall 8/10

Solid conclusion to the arc.

We get so many fights against Shishio. The ending with Yumi. Hoji’s reaction to Shishio’s defeat. So much happens here.

One thing that has always bothered me about this volume is that Shishio was somehow able to withstand a Futae no Kiwami from Sanosuke to the jaw and walked it off as if nothing had happened. Not only that, but the attack ended up costing Sanosuke more than Shishio.

I call bs on this. I think Shishio could have been shown to dominate Sanosuke in other ways without resorting to completely negate the importance of the Futae no Kiwami.

So I can see why the live action movie went with defeating Shishio at the warship. In a way that was much more satisfying than this stupid labyrinth (where did he get the money and the manpower?) and spontaneous combustion ending.

I totally enjoyed this volume until the moment I realized that Yumi and Tomoe are actually similar. You can take it as a compliment. But it's very much NOT a compliment what Watsuki thought about Yumi. How can anyone call a woman "accessory"? Sickening.
