Its Not For Nothing That We Stand For Something: Basic Intellectual Self-Defense for Hindu Parents

Rate this book
Christians believe in the Bible. Muslims believe in the Quran. Liberals believe in Liberty. Communists believe in Equality. What do Hindus believe in?

The answer to that question is "Dharma", but what does it mean to be Dharmic in this Liberal Kali Yuga that we live in? How do we recognize the roots of the problems we are faced with? How can we make sense of right from wrong? How can we tell the difference between us and them? How do we respond to the challenges that Western Modernity has thrown at us? How do we avoid cultural extinction at the intimate level? How do we approach these complex issues with our children?

The musings in this book aim to create an intellectual platform for Hindu parents who will then, hopefully, find the clarity and strength required to nourish self-aware Hindu children...children who will have the capacity for a self-respectful engagement with the modern world.

“Pushing back is therefore not an aggression , it is an act of self protection”.

Have been following this author’s account on Twitter now X for some time. He used to post some good content on Indic matters. Recently came across his book. Was thrilled to read it.A very crisp read. As mentioned in the title of this book it is a basic intellectual self defence for Hindu parents particularly new age parents. We as a Hindu society are facing the consequences of all the “isms”. This book is an eye opener on how to raise your kids in this chaotic world.
Materialist society is creating a world of children like bots. Retrospective way of thinking is need of the hour.
A must read!.

The book came under my purview at an opportune time - I am trying to go back to my roots to learn in-depth about Hinduism (a.k.a Sanatana Dharma) rather than relying on my now slowly receding distant memory of it and its culture after emigrating to foreign land many moons ago. In this short book the author makes a case for why we should stand for something instead of nothing (a very western liberal idea resulting in revolt against one's culture and family and instead favoring "individual freedom" and "self discovery") and why it is important for Indian's in foreign land to learn about Dharma, establish them in their own home and among their community and more importantly teach them to their own kids so they can learn the difference between Hinduism and current global fad that is the Liberalism (he calls it a "Trojan Horse that has entered each of our families on the silent wings of 'education' and Netflix") which may seem to be similar on the surface ("trait of free thinking") but differ in their aim - Hinduism sees Freedom as "Freedom from" whereas liberalism sees freedom as "Freedom to". To quote from the book "Liberty says we are free only when we can fulfill our every desire. Moksha says we are free when are free from desire itself". I am glad books like these are being written in recent times and sense this zeitgeist to turn to our roots is happening to many Hindus all around the world who are conscious and waking up to its call.
