TO. THE. SEA. HE NAMED IT TO THE SEA ?!?! FOR THEIR MOMENT AT THE BEACH?!?! I’M CRYING

The song reminding him of Yuki and Uenoyama at the same time and the gift of music they gave him…. 😭😭😭😭

“I want to stand by his side. Ultimately that’s all there is to it.” SOMEBODY SEDATE ME

A SOMEWHAT PROPOSAL IM DEAD

The Ugetsu and Mafuyu friendship I never knew I needed.

I think a lot of Mafuyu’s fears with music and pursuing it is that he’s living the dream that Yuki never did. And it’s sad obviously to move on and grow and be farther away from the person you were and who you loved. But music will always be there and the memories will always be attached to the music they make. His legacy and the impact that Yuki had will never disappear.

Memories fade but music keeps it alive. 💜

Chapter 50 is the kind of reassurance that I wanted! I suffered for a year! A clear-head Mafuyu, a sort-of proposal, and that stomp towards the dressing room with a determined look on his face is exactly what I needed. Thank you for healing my then already broken heart, sensei!

I'll be back!

Well I finally read the last chapter after putting it off for so long. And I was expecting I'd cry because I'm an emotional fucking wreck, but I wasn't expecting the visceral reaction I just had. Like my body is low key tired after my shaky sobs.

The ending of this series is incredibly bittersweet. Mostly because I wasn't ready for it to end. I feel like you can usually feel when a series is reaching its end. When all the loose ends have been tied up. All the side characters have been explored. Every plot that could possibly happen has happened, but I hadn't felt that with given. I could've read this forever. I was expecting more Shizu exploration, an Ugetsu side story, more date and relationship activity from Uenoyama and Mafuyu, Akihiko and Haruki's uninterrupted sexy time lol. So when they dropped that bomb of a last chapter announcement, I didn't want to believe it. After saying all that though the ending was still beautiful and satisfying. There will always be more that I want and maybe someday we will get Ugetsu's happy ending spin off. Who knows? I'm looking forward to seeing any new works she has though. Also looking forward to the anime and getting to hear Yuki's song.

I'm so sad and so happy at the same time. I just love this series so much.

*Reread 6/15/2025*
Okay, not crying quite as much as I did the first time I read it, but I was having trouble seeing the pages through my tears lol. I love this series so fucking much. While I'm sad it ended sooner than I anticipated, I'm still satisfied with this ending. And oh my god!! Strawberry swing?? I'm an absolute mess. I'm sorry for who I will be in that movie theater when I see it animated.

I mean it's not fully over since there's still 10th mix. I haven't really touched much of it because I wanted to wait for all the chapters to be out. I'm excited for the DVD they're putting out with the manga.

It's finally ended.
I've been reading this manga since I was in high school and I am glad that I can read how this tragedy story ended.

I didn't enjoy the last arc so much. I didn't like how Mafuyu acted. I knew he still had his trauma after Yuki's death. I wish I could understand his feelings. Sadly, Kizu Natsuki didn't give enough story to make me understand about how he felt. I lose my interest in this manga after Haruki and Akihiko arc.

"I wanna sing. I wanna sing. And I want to be with you... for the rest of my life."

description

Given, Vol. 9 is like the perfect encore to an emotional concert—it hits all the right notes and leaves you crying, smiling, and wanting more. Kizu Natsuki captures the raw essence of love, grief, and the transformative power of music in ways that’ll have your heartstrings playing a ballad of their own.

Mafuyu and Ritsuka’s relationship continues to shine as the emotional centerpiece of the series. Mafuyu’s journey from quiet introspection to openly expressing himself is so satisfying it deserves a standing ovation. And let’s be honest—Ritsuka’s mix of unwavering support and occasional awkwardness is peak “boyfriend material.” You’ll be rooting for them with every page.

Meanwhile, Akihiko, Haruki, and Ugetsu’s arcs bring the drama, the angst, and the oh-my-god-I-need-a-minute kind of emotional gut punches. Their stories intertwine beautifully with the main plot, adding layers of complexity without overshadowing the sweet moments that make Given such a treasure.

And the art? Chef’s kiss. Kizu knows how to make every panel count, from the tender gazes to the intense, breathtaking musical sequences. You can almost hear the music coming off the page—it’s that good.

If you’re already invested in the world of Given, this volume is going to knock your socks off. It’s heartfelt, bittersweet, and beautifully crafted—a story that reminds us why music (and love) has the power to heal. Grab your tissues and enjoy the ride—it’s worth every tear and every smile.

Quiero mucho a Uenoyama. Muchísimo. Uenoyama soy yo vuelto a nacer.

Me hizo llorar mucho.

This review is for the entire series (1-9).

"Well, I've never prayed but tonight I'm on my knees, yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singin' to me now
No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people
From one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
(Have you ever been down?)
I can't change, oh, no
I can't change, oh
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, that's life
Tryna make ends meet, tryna find somebody then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah." - Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Verve (I swear this song was written for Mafuyu and I had it on repeat while reading the manga).

____

Given was a gift that came into my life when I needed it the most. It follows the story of Mafuyu Sato, who's boyfriend recently committed suicide, and ends up finding love again and healing his grief through music.

Everything about this story was so beautiful. From the art style, to the story telling, relationships and characters. It shows us different types of love: the unhealthy kind, the healthy, healing kind, and the heartbreaking kind. In a way, all the characters get a happy ending, even if it might not be your traditional one.

I want to start by talking about Mafuyu. He was such a sweetheart and I don't think I've related to a character this much in a long time. He's shy, quiet, introverted but also so full of emotions, which he has difficulty to express. It's clear he might be neurodivergent, and that made me feel very seen because I really relate to him needing direct communication and his brain taking a different route sometimes when trying to express, or figure something out. He's also absolutely broken up over Yuki, his boyfriends, death. I recently went through an incredibly difficult separation and seeing Mafuyu's story made me believe in love again, and how healing is possible. I relate deeply over his pain over Yuki, while I also find his love for music and his growth inspiring. I especially loved the scene where he learns that change is okay because with a steady partner, it means the possibility of making new memories, and that someone who truly loves you won't ever leave you behind or leave you second-guessing anything. I also think his healing journey was very realistic because especially without therapy, and with abuse trauma, it can really take time to get over such a deep, emotional pain as he experienced when losing Yuki. But bit by bit, he learns to live again, and he wants to move forward with Uenoyama. And that doesn't have to mean forgetting Yuki, but making space for someone new instead, who can bring him an even greater sense of happiness and security.

Uenoyama was such a walking green flag. He's so funny with his reactions and temper but he's also a sweetheart at his core. He recognises his own mistakes, and he meets Mafuyu exactly where he needs it. He's also patient and so incredibly caring. It warmed my heart. He's everything a secure partner should be. The fact that he finished Yuki's song so that Mafuyu could have it to remember Yuki by, to help him heal and move on... that was absolutely beautiful, gut wrenching and heartwarming all at the same time.

Haruki was also such a nice character. He often finds himself feeling left out, when truly, he is the glue of the group. At first I was unsure of his relationship with Akihiko due to THAT scene, but it's clear those two were right for each other because Akihiko grew into a man worthy of Haruki, who could love him right. They were very sweet together. I also liked the ending between Ugetsu and Akihiko because it shows how important priorities are in order for a relationship to work, and what type of mistakes can lead to its demise. I loved that Ugetsu stopped Mafuyu from making the same mistake as him with Uenoyama. Hiiragi and Shizu were also a very lovely couple, though I found Shizu's comment quite insensitive at times because Mafuyu's grief and Uenoyama's experience is so valid and should never be diminished.

Overall, this was such a phenomenal manga series. It's forever going to have an incredibly special place in my heart. I felt so seen in my own experiences and trauma. I feel like Mafuyu especially is that type of character who deserved a happy ending. He's been through so much, and his healing is a bit messy, but he grows and he learns and he finds love at last. He finds joy in music. He learns to take scary steps without fearing it will cost him something, because all he's ever known is that change = takes something from him every time. I feel this fear a lot. But it doesn't have to be that way with the right person. I also think it's important that it showed how there can be space for grief AND love. Mafuyu thinking of Yuki doesn't mean he doesn't love Uenoyama, or is replacing him. He's not. He's learning to let go of the pain that's been eating him up for so long now, and it's not a linear thing to do so.

It was so perfect and I look forward to reading the 10 years later installment.

The "ending" (because a cotinuation of the series was announced the moment the last volume was published) was bittersweet, but it was perfect for the story. but the last three volumes had a bit of too much drama and indecision going on for me and I wish the author would have gone easier with the flashbacks. It was confusing at times.
But overall, I liked Given a lot and the art is superb, especially in the last volume.
I hope the continuation would be translated and published here, though I'm not sure if I'll read it because I liked how this ended.

Bueno 🥹 volúmen final de Given…

¿Me explico?

I couldn’t stop reading. It’s been a while since I’ve read manga and I’m so happy I finally got around to this story. I saw it for sale in Tokyo one time and I regret not buying it to read then!
My love for these characters knows no bounds and I’m vibrating with happiness that she’s releasing a sequel series set 10 years later.

I love Mafuyu's journey throughout the volumes and was so happy to see where he ended up. Was the manga rough at times? Yes, but I'm glad I continued and read all of it. The ending was beautiful (and also a bit sad). Popping to ao3 now tho.

It’s done.. it’s over… The intrigue born out of a video edit years ago now ends on a long summer day. I don’t know which chapters will be in this volume or even my opinions on the last few because they were released months apart, the longest being between the last two, but this series overall was so touching. I don’t think I’ll ever forget how beautifully the author intertwined love, loss and music. How music, and art in general, can be a means of preserving the things we love most. I just wish it didn’t have to end so soon.

The song in which Given is preserved: Shift by The Rose 💕💕
